As promised, this week Seth and Jon Parshall take a dive into the world of WWII archival footage from the US National Archives. The team focuses their attention on a few reels of footage from the early part of the Pacific War, namely, captured Japanese footage from Hong Kong, and the Pearl Harbor attack. The guys go through the shots step by step and Jon pours his knowledge of Kido Butai into the talk while interpreting some of the most famous shots taken by Japanese photographers during the attack. The guys go through the Japanese aerial footage frame by frame and pick out the exact moments of torpedo strikes on battleship row--really getting into the weeds. Following that, Sthe guys take a look at the infamous footage of USS Arizona (BB-39) exploding, again, going frame by frame to examine her utter destruction. Finally, Seth takes the wheel and takes you guys through some grainy, but arguably the most historic archival reel of the entire attack-pinpointing scenes showing the destruction of USS Shaw, USS Nevada's sortie out of the harbor, Nevada firing her AAA batteries at Japanese aircraft and an almost step by step set of shots showing USS California's sinking. For reference, the reels we discuss are: 242-299r2, 242mid290, 428npc21950, and 428npc1730  This is the first of many attempts at something new, so bear with us as we navigate a new format. Produced using footage shot from US Navy and US Marine Corps photographers, including Bill Genaust, this film was made to show the American citizenry what their boys lived through in the hell of Iwo Jima. Attorneys Burt Griffin & Leon Hubert, leads for the Warren Commission's investigation into Ruby. Paul found an 11 page memo when researching while writing "Death To Justice" Was Jack Ruby connected to Lee Harvey Oswald? Did they collaborate together? Griffin memo to J. Lee. Rankin reveals the men had many unanswered questions, desiring more answers. Griffin really latched on to DPD Sgt. Patrick Dean, feeling that he was highly suspicious. Dean was really the catalyst for the charge of premeditation for the charge of murder against Ruby. March 24, 1964 Sgt. Patrick Dean was questioned by attorney Burt Griffin for the Warren Commission. The next day, March 25th, Dean filed a complaint against Griffin, who was then ordered back to D.C.. Dean was basically the star witness for the Dallas Police Department in Jack Ruby’s trial. When a Canadian from Victoria called in to say they had footage of the assassination, Dean took the call. Dean tripped himself up when Griffin questioned Dean about the door that lead from the Annex building. Dean was in charge of the security for Dallas City Hall basement in preparation of Oswald’s transfer. Why did the DPD & the Warren Commission protect Sgt. Patrick Dean? Dean was the one who assigned two reserve officers at the entrance way that Ruby utilized. How did Dean indirectly remove these two reserve officers from the basement? Ruby's business partner, Bertha Cheek, was sister in law to Oswald's landlord at the rooming house. Why did Jack Ruby kill Oswald? Griffin & Hubert recommended that Oswald's murder should have it's own chapter in the WC Report. Railroading Griffin & Hubert's investigation basically ended the probe into Ruby & Oswald’s relationship. Dean gave another statement to the Warren Commission, but in D.C., where was he was basically apologized to. In the middle of June or July of 1964, Dean personally asked to have a polygraph test. Unbelievably, even with Dean writing his own questions, he failed his own polygraph test! The results to Dean's failed polygraph test were never given to the Warren Commission! Declared lost! These notes were unavailable for the HSCA's investigation, Dean was called before the HSCA again. Although questioned, the questioning was about how Dean was questioned by the Warren Commission in ‘64. Why did Dean say in his interviews to media on Nov. 24th that he'd seen Ruby enter down the Main St. Ramp? The lawyers wanted to look into the anti-Castro & Dallas Police Dept. connections of Ruby's. Dean took a trip to the third floor of City Hall where he got instructions to take Sorrels to question Jack Ruby. Dean himself appears to be an example compartmentalization on an individual. On the evening of November 24th, after the shooting, there was a meeting back at Jack Ruby's apartment. Attorney Tom Howard was at this meeting. Howard was also present in the basement when Ruby shot Oswald. George Senator, Ruby's roommate & business partner, did not discuss the meeting of the 24th when interviewed. Israel again kills hundreds of Palestinians in 'horrifying' war "Israeli air strikes on besieged Gaza have killed at least 404 Palestinians, including 150 children, a Geneva-based rights group reported as Benjamin Netanyahu decides to resume his war on enclave. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also reported hundreds of wounded Palestinians. Separately, images emerging from Gaza following Israel's attacks are beyond horrifying, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said. She noted that some of the strikes reportedly hit makeshift shelters with sleeping children and families. A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19. Israel has killed over 48,500 Palestinians since October 2023. The rights group warned that global inaction is enabling further massacres." Netanyahu calls intensified Gaza strikes are 'only the beginning' "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that deadly strikes on Gaza were only the start of intensified military attacks. In a televised speech Netanyahu said Hamas has already felt the strength of Israel in the past 24 hours, noting that this is only the ""beginning."" Meanwhile, pro-Palestine protests erupted in Washington and London, with demonstrators demanding an end to US military aid to Israel. Zelenskyy backs 30-day ceasefire proposal on energy infrastructure "Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed support for a proposed 30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure, following talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy clarified that Ukraine had initially proposed the ceasefire, stressing that Washington's involvement as a guarantor was essential. US releases final JFK assassination files after decades of secrecy "The US National Archives has released the final batch of files on John F. Kennedy's assassination, a case still shrouded in conspiracy theories six decades later. It fulfills a prior executive order by president Donald Trump mandating the unredacted release of records on JFK, his brother former attorney general Robert F. Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Millions of pages have been released over decades, but these final files, held back due to national security concerns. While past investigations concluded Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, the slow declassification of documents has only fueled speculation of a deeper plot behind Kennedy's 1963 murder." Astronauts return to Earth after unexpected nine-month stay in space "After an unexpected nine-month stay in space, four astronauts have finally returned to Earth, ending a mission that captivated global attention. A SpaceX Crew Dragon carrying NASA's Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams alongside fellow American Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov splashed down off Florida's coast yesterday evening. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host of this show. Over the last few years, there's been a lot of discussion around how we manage our digital notes. There have been hundreds, if not thousands of new notes apps promising to do wonderful things for us and there have been numerous ways to organise all these notes from Tiago Forte's PARA and the Second Brain to the Zettelkasten system.  The question is do any of these apps and systems work?  I feel qualified to answer this question as I have been down every rabbit hole possible when it comes to digital notes. I've tried Michael Hyatt's Evernote tagging system, Tiago's PARA and I even developed my own system, GAPRA. But, ultimately do any of these work ?  And asking that question; do any of these systems give you what you need? Perhaps is the right place to start. What do you want from a notes app? What do you want to see and how?  Before we get to the answers here, let me hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice for this week's question.  This week's question comes from Susan. Susan asks, Hi Carl, I'm having difficulties trying to understand how best to use Evernote. I just do not know how to organise my notes. I have thousands of notes in there going back at least five years and it's a mess. Do you have any suggestions on how best to clean all these notes up?  Hi Susan, thank you for your question.  I don't think you are alone. The popularity of books like Building A Second Brain and the number of YouTube videos on this subject suggests many people are struggling to know how best to organise their digital notes. But, I wonder if what we are doing is over-complicating something that should be very simple.  I've recently been reading Walter Isaacson's brilliant biography of Leonardo Da Vinci and on the chapter about his notebooks Isaacson points out that Leonardo Da Vinci instilled the habit of carrying around a notebook into all is students and apprentices. It was something Leonardo did himself and everything he collected, wrote and sketched was random in order. We are very fortunate that many of these notebooks survive today and what we get to see is the complete randomness of what he collected. In these notebooks there are designs, sketches, thoughts and to-do lists all on the same page. It was this randomness that led to Leonardo discovering new ways to connect ideas to solve difficult problems and to paint in a way no one else had ever done.  And, I think, this is where we have gone wrong with our digital notes. It's the randomness of your notes that will lead you to discover new ways of doing things. It will help you to be more creative and help you develop your ideas. If you try and strictly organise your notes—something a digital notes app will do—you lose those random connections. Everything will be organised by topic, thought or idea.  That does not mean that you want complete randomness. There will be projects, goals and areas of interest that you will want to keep together. A large project works best when all related notes, emails and thoughts are kept together. After all, they are connected by a common desired outcome. This is where your digital notes will excel—everything together in one place.  This is why having a project notebook or folder is a good idea. You can keep all these materials together and it gives you a central place to review your ongoing projects.  Then, there are what I would describe as critical information materials—things like your clothing and shoe sizes for the various places you buy things from. You may collect your receipts in organised months, and if you trust your digital notes, you may want to keep information such as your ID numbers, driving licence details, and health insurance certificates.  Again, digital notes are great for storing this kind of information as they make it easily retrievable whenever you need it.  What about everything else? The random thoughts and ideas you have. Well, if you want these to be useful to you at some future date, you will want to keep them random. Why is that? Your brain works at a very high level of illogicality. This is the opposite of what a computer does. A computer operates on very strict logical lines. Even AI works logically. AI will look at data and information and give you answers that are already in existence. This often seems amazing because we had not thought of those ideas before, but someone did. That's how AI found the answers.  And of course, as we recently discovered with Google's AI models, there are the biases of the people programming the software—all based on existing thoughts and ideas.  It's these notes that if you want to develop new, creative ideas that link uniquely together, they want to be maintained in a random way.  Paper notebooks make this easy. Each new thought or idea is added to a page in your notebook chronologically, and over time, your ideas will fill that notebook in the order you have them. There may be blocks of similar thoughts and ideas you collected around the same time, but on the whole, they will be completely random. Perhaps on one page, you have some ideas about how you will redesign your back garden and on another page, you have drafted out some ideas about where you and your family will go on their next holiday.  This becomes a little more difficult with digital notes because your computer and the apps you use will want to organise them logically. However, you can create randomness here, too, if you use an archive folder. Many people think of their archive as being one step short of the trash. It's where things you are not sure what to do with go. But stop a moment. Where would historians be without your country's national archive? What are museums? Essentially, museums are archives of interesting things people may want to see. And there is the archive at the Vatican that holds so many treasures and documents.  An archive is not a glorified trash can. It's a treasure trove of history. And if you create an archive notebook or folder in your digital notes you will be creating your own digital archive.  Now, because places like the National Archives in the US or UK or the archives at the Vatican City are always adding new stuff, it would be impossible to organise all these documents by theme. They may be tagged by theme, but they are organised by the date they entered the archive. If I wanted to find documents related to the Titanic, I would begin my search around April 1912. If I wanted to get a snapshot of life in 1964, I would just go to the section that housed documents from 1964.  You can do the same with your own archives. Once you have created a notebook or folder called archive, you can create sub-folders or sub-notebooks by year. Then, as you archive notes, you just add them to the year they were created.  This approach will give you the all-important randomness, yet you still have some organisation.  You can tag these notes if you wish; I do. But, and this is an important but, don't try and be too clever here.  Imagine you were researching the Vietnam War and wanted to know how and why the war escalated in 1965. If you were at the US National Archives, you might begin your research in 1965, then Vietnam. So, the tag would be Vietnam. If you wanted to narrow down your research, you might look at the documents related to President Johnson's decision-making, so perhaps there would be a tag for presidential papers. Beyond that, you would be trying to fine-tune things too much. You would likely see from the results you get which documents relate to meetings.  In your archive, you may have taken a trip to Paris in 2018, and while there, you came across a fantastic restaurant. Perhaps you took at picture of the menu and saved that into your notes. Now, you have two ways of retrieving that information today. If you remember the year you were in Paris, you could go straight to your 2018 archive, and as your notes will be in date order, you could scroll down to the date you were in Paris.  The alternative is if you tagged the note “Paris”, you could do a search for “Paris”. And within seconds you will have retrieved the information you wanted.  That's how you want your notes to work. Keep them simple, so that if you want to retrieve information at a later date, you would be able to find things quickly.  What I've noticed is when we try and be too strict about how we organise our notes we are always fiddling and changing things. While this can be fun, at first, it becomes a drag on your productivity because the more time you spend organising, the less time you spend doing the work you need to do.  You could create separate notebooks for places and topics, but unless these are lifetime interests, keeping everything in their separate notebooks will not make retrieval any faster, and you lose that all-important randomness.  Another area where randomness really helps is with your ideas and thoughts. I'm sure you've had an idea about classes you may want to take or a business idea you want to investigate. You may have had ideas about starting a blog or podcast or writing a book. Many of these ideas will be passing ideas and you soon move on to the next idea. If you were intent on doing something about the idea you would begin. If you don't begin, it's likely a passing idea.  These passing ideas are the gold you do not want to delete. They could contain the seeds of something very special. However, on their own, they may seem redundant after a few weeks or months. It's these notes you want to keep in your archive.  In a year or two, you may feel compelled to skim through one of your archive years, and you begin to see connections between all these ideas. Leonardo Da Vinci, sketched the mouth he eventually gave the Mona Lisa twelve years before he began painting the Mona Lisa.  Individually, these notes may mean nothing. But together, they could be your next great idea.  So, Susan, look at what you want to collect and save. Keep your projects together, these you will be working on frequently. And all those random notes you collect, store them in archives by year. As these build, you will be creating a gold mine of ideas and thoughts you will never regret keeping.  I hope that has helped and thank you for your question. Daniel Morris Salter worked for over 20 years with the USAF as an electronics communications expert and, in 1968, retired from active duty as a Command Sergeant Major—the highest rank for a non-commissioned officer. Early in his Air Force career, Salter had a UFO sighting in 1949, which propelled him to being offered a senior position in the Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit – a top secret intelligence unit that investigated the UFO phenomenon. After his USAF retirement, he was recruited by the National Reconnaissance Office to work on extraterrestrial-related issues concerning covert UFO crash retrieval operations. His duties included silencing witnesses to crashed UFOs or extraterrestrial contact as part of a multitiered official intimidation program that began with verbal warnings, harassment and ended with assassination. After more than a decade of working with the NRO, he retired. In 1993 he began revealing details of his experiences. Salter was among the Disclosure Project witnesses who gave video testimonies to Dr. Steven Greer and attended the latter's famous May 2001 National Press Club Conference. In 2003, Salter wrote Life With a Cosmos Clearance, where he shared some of his direct knowledge of extraterrestrial contact and UFO history. In it, he discussed several leaked Majestic documents that he knew to be real, but could not directly confirm with his own direct experiences due to Non-Disclosure Agreements with the NRO and the threat of assassination. Significantly, Salter shared some of his experiences and insider knowledge with his two grandsons, Daniel and Derek, who both graduated as mechanical engineers and currently work in the engineering industry. Ninety Wampanoag Native Americans and 50 Plymouth colonialists (Pilgrims) celebrated the first-ever autumn harvest celebration in 1621. While this celebration lasted three days, only five women were present. According to the US National Archives, the first federal congress passed a resolution in 1789 requesting the then US president, George Washington, to name a national Thanksgiving Day. The president then proclaimed 26th November as the “Day of Public Thanksgiving” for that year. Although subsequent presidents also proclaimed national thanksgiving days, the holidays fell on different days and months. However, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that Thanksgiving would be held on every last Thursday of November each year and that it would be a national holiday. In Europe, Thanksgiving is popularly known as Erntedank (“harvest thanksgiving festival”). Data from the US Poultry and Egg Association, Americans consume more than 45 million turkeys on Thanksgiving, compared to 22 million at Christmas and 19 million on Easter. Fully half of all whole turkeys eaten in the U.S. are consumed on Thanksgiving Day. Only male turkeys — appropriately named gobblers — actually make the sound. Female turkeys cackle instead. The dollar emerged as the official currency of the United States at a meeting of the Continental Congress on 8th August, 1786. In 2011, the US National Archives released 12,000 pages of documents relating to the activities of the Public Health Service in 1940s Guatemala. This report conclusively proved that a team of doctors led by John Charles Cutler, previously involved in the notorious Tuskegee Experiment, knowingly infected patients in Guatemala with syphilis and other venereal diseases. Our friend Krebbs joins Russian Sam for a discussion about this deeply shocking episode in the history of US-Latin American relations. Under the pretext of a program to study prophylactic methods for STDs, thousands of Guatemalans were infected without their consent. The victims included some of the vulnerable members of Guatemalan society, including psychiatric patients, prisoners, prostitutes, and orphans. The methods by which these patients were infected exhibited a sadism that rivals the medical atrocities of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The US formally apologized for these horrific crimes in the Obama administration, but the grievances of the victims remain without redress. Join us as we explore the history of syphilis treatment and other brutally unethical medical experiments to understand why this official apology remains unsatisfying. As we explore how white supremacy and imperial violence underscore human medical experimentation, we have to ask if this atrocity in Guatemala was really about preventing disease at all.

Chemists may know James Harris as the first Black scientist to be credited with codiscovering an element. In fact, we referenced this in a previous episode of Stereo Chemistry about making superheavy elements. But beyond this memorable factoid, details about the accomplished nuclear chemist are scarce, and most sources repeat the same superficial information. Kristen Frederick-Frost, curator of modern science at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, wants to change that. After discovering that the museum's database lacked material on Harris, she scoured archival records and sought out former colleagues, friends, and family members to fill in details of his life and career. In this bonus episode of Stereo Chemistry, host Kerri Jansen and special guest Dr. Darryl Boyd join Frederick-Frost to explore James Harris's story beyond the discoveries that made him famous. Susanne Riveles received a Ph.D. in African Studies from Howard University in Washington DC and holds an MA in Sociology from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. She also studied at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, and Columbia University in New York. From 1980-1993, she worked for Amnesty International (AIUSA), leading their Southern Africa Coordination Group. Her advocacy portfolio included many hundreds of prisoners of conscience, notably Nelson Mandela, Albertina and Walter Sisulu, Desmond Tutu, and Simon Farisani. In May 1985, she accompanied the Rev. Jesse Jackson on his two-weeks speaking tour to the European Parliament in Strasbourg and to Berlin to mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Berlin and the end of WWII. For three years, Dr. Riveles directed a project for the Holocaust and war victims Tracing and Information Center of the American Red Cross at the US National Archives, searching through German documents captured by the US army during WWII and at the liberation of German concentration camps. From 2005-2009 Dr. Riveles researched the National Archives in Berlin, researching the records collected by the Nazi secret police (Gestapo) about the activities of the Saefkow, Jacob, Baestlein (SJB) resistance group. Dr. Riveles and two historians, all daughters of executed members of the SJB resistance organization, designed, researched, fundraised, and implemented the exhibit presented at Berlin's Humboldt University in summer 2009. Dr. Riveles was also responsible for a project that placed 53 commemorative stones {Stolpersteine) in and around Berlin. Dr. Riveles served on the Board of the International Alliance of Women, where she was the convener of the Commission for Women, Peace, and Security and served as a delegate to the UN Commission on the Status of Women CSW for the last seven years. Film-maker Tim Tate discusses North Korea, Nuremberg and MI5 Tim Tate discusses with Ivan six things which he thinks should be better known. Tim Tate is a multi-award winning documentary film-maker, investigative journalist and best-selling author. Over a career spanning almost 40 years he has written for most national newspapers and made more than 80 documentaries for British and international broadcasters. Blaine Alden Krauss is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida. He holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati. After making his broadway debut in the critically acclaimed “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” he strutted across Al Hershfield in the Tony Award Winning “Kinky Boots” and is currently featured in the “The Cher Show”. He was also seen in the Radio City New York Spectacular under the direction of Mia Michaels and on tour of Disneys “The Lion King” playing Simba in theatres all across the US and Canada. In 2011 his talents led him to be a feature performer for the largest Commemoration of 9/11 outside of the U.S at the Trocadero in Paris, France performing for Government Officials and then a free concert in front of the Eiffel Tower with the Royal Orchestra. In 2010 he was selected to be 1 of 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts by the White House and Presidential Scholar Commission. This honor culminated in a medal ceremony with President Barack Obama and a performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Blaine was selected to be the Feature Vocalist at the 2010 July 4th Celebration at the US National Archives; a feature vocalist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra in Indiana for their Holiday Pops Concert; was a selected participant at the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh Scotland; a 2010 Silver Winner in Musical Theatre by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Program, and can be currently seen as a frequent performer of “Feinstein's 54 Below in NYC, as well as with symphonies across the country with Spot-On Entertainment. Another Smear campaign has begun to muddy the legacy of Dr. Martin luther King jr. This Govt has alway hated Dr King. Here is the latest info they are going to release in 2027. FBI documents from the 1960s allege Martin Luther King Jr. had affairs with 40 women and stood by as a friend raped a woman, a new report said. An article by the King biographer David Garrow set to be released on Thursday in Standpoint magazine will detail the FBI memos, London's The Times reported. Garrow said the memos say King engaged in orgies, solicited prostitutes, and "looked on and laughed" as a pastor he knew raped a woman. The memos were part of a huge US National Archives data dump in early 2019. The FBI secretly recorded King in a yearslong effort to discredit him. The tapes themselves remain under seal in the US National Archives. And Garrow's article was rejected by more prominent news outlets. Carrie Brummer talks about her current project which was inspired by a visit to the US National Archives. While living in the Middle East, Carrie formed an online community called Artists Strong, to stay in touch with more artists. The US National Archives revealed images of women in the 1940s who had taken jobs that were traditionally taken up by men, however with the men away at war, the women took up the jobs. Curiously the photographs provided no further information such as names of the sitters. It was the absence of this information that Carrie was drawn to, and her art work now celebrates these women. Her art uses a range of crafting skills which she says were also traditionally associated with women. In this episode she talks about working towards an exhibition in Ottawa. Did Elvis die of a heart attack? A drug overdose? Was he murdered? Is he working undercover for the FBI? Did he fake his own death?The Elvis Presley Conspiracy episode we will uncover information that may lead to any number of possibilities. The call came to Memphis Fire Station No. 29 at 2:33 p.m. on August 16, 1977. The dispatcher indicated that someone at 3754 Elvis Presley Boulevard was having difficulty breathing. “Go to the front of the mansion, the gate will be open,” the voice said. An ambulance swung out of the station onto Elvis Presley Boulevard and headed south, siren wailing maintaining a high speed.The two medics manning the ambulance recognized the address right away, it was Elvis Presley’s home, Graceland, three miles south of the fire station. Two years before the medics had come to assist Elvis’s father, Vernon Presley, after he suffered a heart attack and they thought it might be Vernon again.As the ambulance drove toward Graceland and the gates swung open and the crowd milling around the entrance parted. Making a wide sweeping turn to the left, the vehicle bounced heavily across the sidewalk and hurtled through the entranceway, striking one of the swinging metal gates a clanging blow. One of the several musical notes welded to the gate fell off. The ambulance accelerated up the curving drive toward the mansion and braked hard in front of the two-story, white-columned entrance. Here they were met with one of Elvis' bodyguards.“He’s upstairs,” the man exclaimed, “and I think it’s an Over Dose.”They rushed upstairs into Elvis' bedroom and then were pointed towards the bathroom where over twelve people milled about over a body of a man in mismatched silk pajamas—a yellow top and blue bottoms.At first sight the medics didn’t recognize Elvis. The man was stretched out on his back on the thick red rug with his pajama top open and his bottoms pulled down below his knees.They noted he was very dark, almost black. One medic thought that he might have been a black man.“From his shoulders up, his skin was dark blue,” he later told reporters.A young man was pressing Elvis’s chest rhythmically, while a middle-aged woman gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The medics swooped in fast and looked for a pulse. They could not locate one. Then they noted that Elvis was very cold, unusually cold and they believed he had been clinically dead for a very long time.“We think he OD’d,” came a voice from the crowd. The medics determined the best course of action was to take Elvis to the hospital and they retrieved a stretcher and took Elvis out the front door noting that he weighed more than they had anticipated. They claim he weighed between 230-250 pounds.As they reached the ambulance a green Mercedes-Benz raced up the driveway and lurched to a stop. It was Elvis’s doctor, George Nichopoulos otherwise known as Dr. Nick.As the ambulance raced down the driveway and up the boulevard Dr. Nick worked desperately on the body, shouting to the dead man not to die. That he could not die. That he had to live, for godsake's live! The doctor performed CPR the whole way to the hospital chanting “Breathe, Elvis . . . come on, breathe for me.”It is a curious matter, however, that both medics on scene believed that Elvis had been dead for a long while, and yet, the doctor, was performing CPR and trying to revitalize a seemingly dead corpse on route to the hospital. But, let's get back to that later. I just wanted to put that thought in your head as we will examine it further in this podcast.The ambulance left Graceland at 2:48 and was on route to Methodist South Hospital, only blocks away from Graceland when Dr. Nick ordered the ambulance to drive further another sixteen minutes to Baptist Memorial Hospital. Later it was revealed that Dr. Nick preferred this hospital because they were more discreet in dealing with celebrity patients.The hospital also maintained a superbly well trained crew of eighteen doctors, nurses, and medical specialists to deal with life-or-death situations. The team worked on Elvis for 20 full minutes before delivering the news that nothing could be done to save Elvis. In fact, some of the team questioned the matter from the very start. He was dead. Very dead and there was no helping a man who had died hours beforehand.Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n Roll. One of the greatest performers of all time was dead. It was, at the time unbelievable.And Elvis' estate was in complete chaos. Even before the ambulance called, someone had leaked the death to the media. Witnesses claim that even during this time, some people were walking out with trophies, valuable and with Elvis Memorabilia and Mementos.However, the police were never called and only participated in the security of Elvis Presley's corpse while at the morgue. They retrieved basic statements from Dr. Nick who would not specify how Elvis died. Dr. Nick went back to Graceland in the afternoon to secure a signature from Vernon Presley, Elvis' father authorizing an autopsy.The autopsy was conducted by a specially selected and highly skilled team of nine pathologists headed by the hospital’s chief of pathology, Dr. E. Eric Muirhead. Dr. Jerry Francisco, the medical examiner for Shelby County, closely observed the proceedings. It would be his responsibility to declare to the world the official cause of Elvis Presley’s death.Early on, a meticulous dissection of the body revealed what Elvis did not die from. It was not heart failure, stroke, cancer, or lung disease— the usual killers. It also confirmed what his doctors already knew: Elvis was chronically ill with diabetes, glaucoma, and constipation. As they proceeded, the doctors saw evidence that his body had been wracked over a span of years by a large and constant stream of drugs. They had also studied his hospital records, which included two admissions for drug detoxification and methadone treatments. Over time, Elvis had, in effect, been poisoned. The bloated body, the puffy eyelids, and the constipation reflected the slow death. They prepared multiple specimens from the corpse’s fluids and organs to be identified anonymously and sent to several well-respected laboratories across America for analysis. Chances seemed high that Elvis had, in fact, overdosed.After Elvis’s body had been wheeled away to the morgue, he told them that Elvis had been pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m., apparently of heart failure. Elvis died of heart failure, suddenly and without warning. It was a crisis that could not have been avoided. No one was at fault in Elvis’s demise. They concluded this without the completion of the pathological report. They further stated that the true cause of death may never be discovered but stressed that drugs had nothing to do with it.The image of Elvis was intact. Radio stationed played tribute music. His fans, worldwide mourned.But as the world mourned and fans shocked at the death of the King of Rock N Roll, rumours began swirling about Elvis's last years, his last days, his last night and what was the real cause of his death, or even more bizarre, how he managed to fake his own death.Vernon Presley was one of the first to question what was really going on. He had distrust of Dr. Nick, of the medical examiners report, of Elvis's friends and staff. He had suspicion that Elvis had been murdered.And Vernon was not alone.Elvis' last days were very stressful, not only on himself, but also on his staff and anyone around him. Elvis was not recording in studio any longer and had no movie contracts and was required to continually perform live in order to maintain the lifestyle he and others enjoyed. Whereas a manager and promoter would typically take a 15% cut of profits, Elvis', known as Colonel Tom Parker, took in excess of 50% and was demanding more.Elvis had not toured outside of the US except for some brief shows in Canada and was looking forward to revitalizing his career abroad, particularly in the UK and Western Europe. He was very stressed about putting the whole show together. He was slightly, but not grossly over-weight. He was tired of himself and depressed and was looking forward to a complete change. He wanted to get back into shape and to make drastic changes in his life including reestablishing a relationship with Priscilla, his ex wife because he missed regular family life with her and their daughter.It was rumoured, also, that Elvis was about to break up with his current girlfriend Ginger Alden.As the tour was being planned, Elvis had Vernon fire a few of his long term employees Red West, Sonny West and Dave Hebler because of spontaneous disputes. Elvis had left each with money and they claimed that Elvis planned on hiring them back on, but he was just being stubborn.But before getting hired back, the three, together with tabloid columnist Steve Dunleavy, wrote a scathing expose of Elvis entitled “Elvis What Happened?”According to their own accounts, the reasons for writing the book were not for financial gain or revenge, but "to get him to face up to reality and do something about his destructive lifestyle before it was too late".The book tells the story of Presley's personal life as seen through the eyes of Red, Sonny, and Hebler. It tells of incidents relating to his sex life, drug use, musical career, and his relationship with each of the three men. Names of people written about in the book, for the most part, are changed to respect their privacy, although this has led some to believe that a lack of named sources suggests these people and incidents never really existed.The book went on sale in July and was not an immediate success. It was only after Elvis' death that the book became popular and went on to sell three million copies.Not only were these three bodyguards on the outs, it seemed as if others, too, still employed by the Elvis estate were on the outs. Body guards, promoters, band members, everyone was fired or re-hired or didn't know what was going on as the new tour was being put together. Even the Colonel was fired, and re-hired and fired again. Elvis was said to be stressed out and suggested he simply take a whole year off and to relax in either Hawaii or his Palm Springs house.Some feel that a vengeful employee had slipped Elvis prescription drugs that fateful night that mixed with others he was taking caused a toxic concoction and ultimately death.If Elvis's death was a crime scene it was not treated as such. The room, and house filled with dozens of onlookers, the police were never called, never inspected, never photographed ....never questioned. The cleaning staff at Graceland meticulously cleaned the bathroom before the ambulance had arrived, and shortly after the body was recovered. The carpet was scrubbed clean. The staff then went to work on the bedroom and dressing rooms in a curious cleanup affair. Why did they need to clean up? Who ordered the immediate cleaning?Elvis nearly always carried a firearm with him, carried them on stage and in some instances wore bullet proof vests while performing. He was concerned over his safety and obviously did not fully trust his security detail as much as one would.Others have come to a different conclusion about who was responsible for the murder of Elvis.Suzanna Leigh was a friend of Elvis' whom she starred in the 1966 film Paradise, Hawaiian Style. For years, she’s been plagued by doubts about his death.As soon as I saw photos of the aftermath of Elvis’s death, alarm bells went off in my head, she says.There was a picture of a woman, who was close to Elvis, standing in the doorway at Graceland in the middle of the night, just hours after his death. She looked immaculate, her make-up perfect.What was wrong with this? Well, if the love of my life had just been found dead, I would have looked like the Witch of Endor, mascara streaming down my face, she continues.Although we were only ever friends, I had been in love with Elvis since I was 11. My dreams of meeting him came true when I was cast in Paradise, Hawaiian Style. We bonded immediately and became true soulmates.Elvis, who was very religious, loved my stories about my English convent school. The first time he took my hand was on set. We only kissed twice but there was the promise of many more intimacies to come. We remained friends throughout my passionate affair with Richard Harris, and wanted to make another movie together — but it was never to be.Colonel Tom Parker never liked our friendship, mainly because I was introducing him to actors like Richard Harris. Elvis wanted to be a real actor, but Colonel Parker only looked for easy money.I was asleep in London when Elvis died — having returned to Britain in the Seventies. In the years that followed, I continued my career in England. Then, in 2003, I put my connection with Elvis to use by going to work as a VIP tour guide at Graceland.It was there that I first heard rumours from people on the estate that Elvis had been murdered. And when I went to the library to find out more, I discovered that many reputable people believed his death — from apparent heart failure, compounded by drug abuse — was not straightforward.One book pointed the finger at Elvis’s doctor, ‘Nick’ Nichopoulos, who prescribed scores of pills for his hypochondriac patient, although it’s hard to believe he would kill his paymaster.The most interesting theory was by British journalist John Parker, who claimed there was a Mafia connection.Then there’s the fact that the post-mortem report will not be available until 2027. Why would the Federal Bureau of Investigation lock documents away if there was nothing to hide?I soon learned Elvis had in fact been part of one of the largest FBI investigations of the Seventies, codenamed Fountain Pen. Apparently, he had been the innocent victim in a Mafia fraud case involving billions of dollars.Scores of federal agents worldwide had investigated it, and Elvis was due to give evidence. The FBI was meant to be protecting Elvis when he died.Despite this, Elvis’s death has never been officially investigated.The first person I talked to as I tried to understand more about the mystery was Beecher Smith, who had been Elvis’s lawyer.He told me that as part of the investigation, Elvis and his father were supposed to appear in front of a federal grand jury on August 16, 1977 — the day Elvis died.My next port of call was George Klein, who had been at school with Elvis. He told me that just before his death, Elvis, who was a mess because of his hectic workload, had decided to take a year off and had sacked half his staff, including Colonel Parker.When he sacked his band, tempers were running so high that they brought out a salacious book about him just two weeks before he died. It all got so nasty that Elvis was forced to employ a team of security people who were all ex-cops, headed by Dick Grob, a former police sergeant.George told me Elvis was so serious about giving up work that he had rented a house in Hawaii and planned to get fit again.To find out more, I went to see Grob. Though upset when talking about it all, he confirmed that Vernon, Elvis’s father, always believed his son was murdered.When Elvis died, Grob had launched his own investigation, questioning everyone in the house as to where they were that night, and logging every call.He claims records show someone phoned a newspaper from Graceland at 1am to alert them that there was a big story coming out that night — an hour before emergency services were called.Then he made a truly extraordinary allegation. ‘Elvis died of a massive codeine overdose,’ he told me. ‘It doesn’t matter what other things they say he died of — that is what he really died of.’I could hardly believe what I was hearing. I knew Elvis was allergic to codeine, an opiate painkiller. Could someone have tricked him into ingesting it?Grob explained that the madness on the night Elvis died meant that nothing was properly investigated. ‘There was pandemonium in the streets, with distraught fans and journalists arriving from all over the world,’ he said. ‘There were about 200,000 people outside the gate.‘If the police had said they suspected Elvis had been murdered, there would have been a lynching. The police tried to get a handle on things, but so much stuff was walking out the door. A lot of things disappeared that night and were sold later.‘Someone even washed the carpet where Elvis had fallen. Imagine that — cleaning up before the police arrived? It could only have been someone really close to Elvis that could have ordered that.’George Klein had told me that many suspicions were focused on Colonel Parker. Beecher Smith, meanwhile, said Parker had a lot to gain from Elvis’s death — only a day after the death, he had persuaded the singer’s father to sign over to him 50 per cent of The King’s posthumous earnings.The news about Colonel Parker didn’t surprise me. I had never liked him. Yet though there were a lot of incentives for him to dispatch his protege, he wasn’t there that fateful night.So how did Elvis die?In Dick Grob’s opinion, it was organised by the Mob. He told me they did not want Elvis or his father to appear in court because of all the media interest it would create, so they must have got someone inside the house. ‘That’s what Vernon believed all along,’ said Dick. ‘Someone from inside let the killer into the house.’This was explosive stuff, and I suspected I was on the right track because odd things started happening to me. First, a wheel fell off my truck while I was driving.If I had been going faster, I could have been killed. A mechanic I saw afterwards said the nuts on the other wheels were also about to come off. Somebody had been messing with them.Then, one night as I was walking my dog, I stood like a rabbit in the headlights while a young black girl, not more than 20, stuck her arm out of the window of a passing car and fired at least five very loud shots from a handgun, which hit some trees above me.On another occasion, someone broke into my car, then someone tried to break into my house and stabbed one of my other dogs.To this day, I suspect someone wanted me out of the way. I didn’t wait to find out who before I left town.I know people will find it hard to believe these claims, but I knew the real Elvis, and after what’s happened to me I’m more convinced than ever that we are a long way from discovering the full truth about his death concludes Suzanna Leigh.Others are also convinced that something strange happened that fateful night, but their interpretation of events conclude that Elvis was not murdered, in fact, they believe Elvis did not die at all.Detective Mulder, from The Xfiles Television program sums it up.Yes, some believe people believe that Elvis Presley fooled us all either to exit the entertainment industry in good terms, relatively good looking and technically the King or to go into hiding due to his undercover work with the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States.There is no doubt, Elvis was fascinated by law enforcement, and even as a child wanted to be a police officer. He collected badges from several police departments and agencies.The most requested item in the US National Archives – more popular than the photos of the moon landing, the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights is the iconic image shows the meeting between the president and the King: the real-life encounter between Elvis Presley and President Nixon in the Oval Office in December, 1970.On a American Airlines flight to Washington DC, Elvis – who rarely wrote – requested notepaper and proceeded to pen a letter to the president, offering “any service I can to help the country out” and requesting to be made “a federal agent at large”.Elvis explained the reason for his visit: his desire for a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. The singer was a collector of police badges and believed this one would give him the special powers and freedom of a federal agent. Nixon granted his wish for a badge, and the meeting concluded as Elvis put his arm around the president and hugged him.Was Elvis a real undercover agent? Or was this just a fantasy he believed to be true? There are reports that Elvis had in fact used badges and represented himself as a lawman. In one instance he even had a hand held police siren and chased down a speeding motorist and warned the driver against excessive speed, but pardoned him and didn't issue a ticket. The motorists, totally flabbergasted, drove off.There is also a time, Elvis stopped a plane on the runway using his Narcotics Badge to pursue his employee Hamburger James, whom he had learned was stealing jewelry from Elvis. On the plane, Elvis read his best version of the Miranda Rights and the Memphis Mafia, Elvis' bodyguards take James back to their hotel room. Elvis smacked James in the face twice and then started crying asking James why he did not just let him know he needed money. Elvis said he would keep him on as an employee, but James declined and was paid a severance package, never to deliver Hamburgers to Elvis again.But what if Elvis just wanted to hide away? Elvis was too big a star and Graceland was too small for that.There are some people that believe that Elvis is in hiding at Cooper Creek Baptist Church in Denton, Texas cleverly disguised as Pastor Bob Joyce. Bob Joyce bears a remarkable likeness to Elvis and is exactly the same age as Elvis would be if still alive. He can play the piano effortlessly and has a phenomenal singing voice that is uncannily like Elvis. The Pastor is even said to have the same scars as Elvis. In a later interview with Pricilla when asked, what would Elvis be doing if he were alive today, she answered: "ELVIS WOULD BE PREACHING, HE LOVED TO PREACH AND HE LOVED THE BIBLE"!In the 1980s a recording surfaces reportedly from the King himself describing his current lifestyle. The recording shocked Elvis fans from around the world as they learned that Elvis was still alive, in the witness protection program. In Ottawa Canada, there have been so many Elvis sightings that a group was formed to study the phenomenon The Elvis Sighting Society. They even had an unnamed roadway named Elvis Lives Lane and even documented Elvis order a Double Double at Tim Hortons.We can laugh, because, that is what Elvis would have done. But if we take a serious look into the last night of Elvis' life we have a great deal of unanswered questions that may lead you to believe any number of conspiracies.Elvis was overweight and was taking prescription pills to help him stay awake when needed or to fall alseep. He was supervised by a host of doctors, but mainly observed by Dr. Nick. Even though his weight was not ideal, he was not obese and even though his diet was typically southern, he was not, as the media portrays, gluttonous. Even the famed fried peanut butter banana sandwich story is, well, myth.In his last hours, Elvis played racketball, an intensely gruling sport that requires not only mental focus but an insane about of cardio. After playing racketball, Elvis sat down at the piano and finished with Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.As he rested in bed, he found he could not sleep and requested a medical aid. Still, with no help, he requested additional support in the form of more pills.Unable to still sleep, he took a book with him and sat down on the toilet to read.Later, his girlfriend Ginger Allen found him slumped on the floor, apparently dead.The official cause of death was noted as heart failure. Years later an investigation shows us that perhaps drugs had a bigger influence his death. Dr. Nick was brought before the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners on several charges related to overprescribing drugs to Elvis Presley and other patients. In January 1980, the board suspended his license for three months for indiscriminately prescribing and dispensing controlled substances to ten people, including Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. In November 1981 Dr. Nick was officially charged in a criminal court with 11 felony counts of overprescribing drugs to nine patients. He was acquitted. Five new charges were brought against him in 1992 by the state of Tennessee for overprescribing drugs to Elvis. This time, the State Department of Health was determined to revoke the doctor's medical license permanently.But Dr. Nick brought forth another theory. Dr. Nick said that after the autopsy he noted that Elvis mostly likely died because he was full of shit and often had accidents on stage where he would literally crap his pants and have to change into different clothes. According to Dr Nick, the autopsy found Elvis’s colon to be five to six inches in diameter, compared to an average of two to three inches. And rather than the standard four to five feet long, Elvis's colon was eight to nine feet. He determined that Elvis's weight gain, was not body fat, but at least a 20 pound turd stuck in his colon.Now this new theory hold little weight, as we are simply taking Dr. Nick's word on it and his experts in the field, which he says talked on the phone with him and made these conclusions.Dr. Nick died in 2016, and its probably a good thing because if Elvis were alive today, he probably would have fired up the Lisa Marie, flew up to 30,000 feet above Memphis and threw the bastard out the door.Elvis, in a sense does live, forever. His mark, his music, his way, not only is revered worldwide it echoes in music throughout time. Baron, former director of litigation at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration to discuss Information Governance as it relates to e-discovery, privacy, record keeping and security. Baron connects the dots between all these areas and helps lawyers understand they need to know about information governance and the current trends he is see in this area. Baron serves as counsel to the Information Governance and E-Discovery Practice Group at the law firm of Drinker Biddle and Reath, in Washington, DC. His prior career in the federal service included acting as trial lawyer and senior counsel at the Department of Justice, and for the past 13 years as director of litigation at the US National Archives and Records Administration. He is an internationally recognized speaker on the subject of electronic records.
