On this episode, Mark Blyth talks with Małgorzata Mazurek, a historian, associate professor of Polish Studies at Columbia University, and author of the forthcoming book “The Economics of Hereness: The Polish Origins of Global Developmentalism 1918-1968.”Mazurek explores how, between World Wars I and II, a group of thinkers led by economists Michał Kalecki and Ludwik Landau began to re-envision Poland's economy – and future. Their work, and Mazurek tells it, threatened many of the assumptions held by those in power about economic development in the mid-20th century, and would go on to influence thinkers around the world in the decades to come. In telling the story of these thinkers, Mazurek also recounts a fascinating moment in Poland's history, when a unique confluence of attitudes towards trade, immigration, and ethnic diversity created a laboratory for new economic ideas. In this episode, Małgorzata Mazurek (Columbia University) engages in a discussion with Thục Linh Nguyễn Vũ (RECET) on how Michał Kalecki and Ludwik Landau, Polish economists in the interwar period, responded to local and global challenges such as poverty and the Great Depression. Embedded in the Second Polish Republic — a fragile political entity — the economists in question generated innovative ideas about mass employment and economic development.   Małgorzata Mazurek is an associate Professor in Polish Studies in the History Department at Columbia University. Her interests include the history of social sciences, international development, the social history of labor and consumption in twentieth-century Poland, and Polish-Jewish studies. She published Society in Waiting Lines: On Experiences of Shortages in Postwar Poland (Warsaw, 2010), which deals with the history of social inequalities under state socialism. Her current book project, Economics of Hereness, revises the history of developmental thinking from the perspective of interwar Poland and its problem of multi-ethnicity. She has recently written about the idea of full employment in interwar Poland for the American Historical Review, history of social sciences for a survey handbook, The Interwar World, and the university as the Second-Third World Space in the Cold War for the volume Socialist Internationalism and the Gritty Politics of the Particular edited by Kristin Roth-Ey.

Join Alex and guest host Dr. Chris Mazurek as they discuss the implications of a near-future world with human-looking androids called Replicants in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). The film is based on Phillip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The film stars Harrison Ford, in between his Indiana Jones and Star Wars stints, who plays Rick Deckard, a Blade Runner — a person who hunts and kills (retires) these replicants because they're not supposed to be on Earth. Rutger Hauer plays Roy Batty, the leader of the replicant group being hunted, who ends up a tragic figure rather than merely a bad guy. He just wants to live more than four years! The guys explore the nature of life as a replicant, such as emotional development, sentience, memories, and objectification. It's a wild — and wet — world in Los Angeles 2019... of course those memories will be lost like tears in the rain.

In 1981, a 10 year old girl was biking come from her aunts house. It had been a fun filled and busy day. She had just started secondary school and her parents let her bike home alone through a two mile stretch of woods between her aunts house and her own. It wasn't the first time she'd taken this route but it was her last. She disappeared. It was 16 days before she was found dead, buried in a box that looked like it had been designed to sustain her. A man named Werner Mazurek would become the primary suspect but he wouldn't be jailed until 28 years later. When he was finally put in prison, Ursula's brother would doubt Mazurek's his guilt. This is one of the most famous cases in Germany and is still controversial today. Episode 101 Crosscurrents in Early Electronic Music in Italy—Part 2 Playlist Pietro Grossi, Studio Di Fonologia Musicale Di Firenze (S 2F M) Pietro Grossi, Marino Zuccheri, “Progetto II e III” (1961) (1961 RAI). Pietro Grossi began experimenting with electronic sound while visiting the RAI in the early 1960s. During this time, he became fascinated with algorithmic manipulations of sine waves and produced the piece Progetto 2-3 (1961) which mathematically managed the slowly intersecting trajectories of six audio signals. This is an excerpt from the original 30-minute work. 2:56 Pietro Grossi, S2 F M: A1, “Primavera,” “Estate,” Autunno,' “Inverno,' “Alba,' “Tramonto,' “Notte,' “Temporale,' “Arcobaleno,” “Suspense N. 1,” “Suspense N. 2,” “Suspense N. 3,” “Suspense N. 4” and “Thrilling” from Electronic Soundtracks (1965 Cooper Recordes). Works composed at the Studio di Fonologia Musicale (S 2F M) in Florence. This is the first example of broadcast library music that Grossi was engaged in for many of the following years, presumably to keep his S2FM Studio funded. 9:24 Pietro Grossi, “Battimenti A Due Frequenze” (1965) from Battimenti (2003 Ants). From the inside cover: "94 sets of beats with 2, 3, 4, 5 frequencies taken from a catalogue of sound events that I and my collaborators have created in the electronic music studio S 2F M around the year 1965. These sound events were meant to be used for various compositional purposes. Each set of beats lasts approximately 30 seconds; they are arranged as follows: 10 sets with two frequencies, 25 with three frequencies, 31 with four frequencies, 28 with five frequencies. Listening at low level is suggested. P.G." Interestingly, this experiment in four parts required about 54 minutes to hear in total. This part is the shortest. 5:50 Pietro Grossi, “Collage” (1968) from Musicautomatica (2003 Die Schachtel). A change of pace from other works at this studio, this collage piece is an electroacoustic work largely based on naturally occuring sounds that have been distorted and modified. 13:52 Pietro Grossi, “Citta' Sommersa,” from Atmosfera & Elettronica (1972 Lupus records). Another broadcast library album of interesting, electronic atmospheres. 2:59 Studio Di Fonologia Musicale Di Firenze, “Mixed Paganini,” “Permutations Of Five Sounds,” “Continuous,” (1967) from GE-115 - Computer Concerto. Imagine hyour surprise if you were a recipient of this 7-inch disc that was distributed in 1967 as a New Year's gift by Olivetti company. “Transcriptions for the central processor unit of a GE-115 computer of short excerpts of Paganini & Bach music scores and original works as well.” I chose to present side 2 of the disc which features early computer works with a flare for the rapid-fire articulation of notes by the computer. These examples vary significantly from the more traditional classical arrangements found on side 1. Realized at Studio di Fonologia musicale di Firenze (Italy). 5:04 Enore Zaffiri, Studio di Musica Elettronica di Torino (SMET) Enore Zaffiri, “Musica Per Un Anno”(1968, excerpt) from Musica Per Un Anno (2008 Die Schachtel). Early work from this studio was mostly abstract and experimental. This piece is a terrific representation. All of the frequencies, their amplitude and durations were determined based on the mathematical analysis of 12 geometric figures derived around the 12 hours on a clock face. From the liner notes: “This electronic music is intended as a sound track for ambients. It develops over a duration of one year's time. The sound events change imperceptibly but continuously, in relation to the months, days, hours and minutes. Every instant has its unique music, which merges with the light, and the air of the ambient.” The original is 60 minutes long. 13:41 Lorenzo Ferrero, “Immigrati” (1971) from Musica Elettronica - Computer Music (1972 Compagnia Editoriale Pianeta). The third major Italian electronic music was the Studio Di Musica Elettronica located in Torino and founded in 1964 by Enore Zaffiri. This piece was recorded in 1971 after they had acquired and EMS Synthi. 6:22 Teresa Rampazzi, Gruppo Nuove Proposte Sonore (NPS), Padua Gruppo NPS (Rampazzi, Marega, Chiggio, Meiners, Alfonsi), “Ricerca 4” (1965) from Nuove Proposte Sonore 1965-1972 (2011 Die Schachtel). Monophonic track revolving around a group of sound objects that were manipulated using tape editing and processing. The reverberation of this work was created by putting a loudspeaker in a stairwell. There is also the unwanted thud of a door still in the work. 5:46 Gruppo NPS (Rampazzi, Marega, Mazurek), “Modulo 4” (1965) from Nuove Proposte Sonore 1965-1972 (2011 Die Schachtel). Monophonic track revolving around a group of sound objects that were manipulated using tape editing and processing. Experiments on signal impulses and their changing attacks and decay. of 3:48 Gruppo NPS (Rampazzi, Marega), “Freq. Mod. 2” (1965) from Nuove Proposte Sonore 1965-1972 (2011 Die Schachtel). Short bands of frequencies modulated by low-level signals abd brief, “violent impulses.” 6:26 Gruppo NPS (Rampazzi, Gracis), “Insiemi” (1965) from Nuove Proposte Sonore 1965-1972 (2011 Die Schachtel). A more lyrical, rather than systematic composition process is shown in this work. Adjectives such as calm, cathartic, and conflict were used to describe the outcome. 7:33 Opening background music: Pietro Grossi, “Unicum” from Musicautomatica (2003 Die Schachtel), excerpt.   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

I wanted to introduce and share Jason's personal journey as a Lover, Truth seeker, Innovator and Spiritual being. We will speak on many levels of the evolution of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being that can bring insight to his Hero's journey. We touched on many subjects in this podcast that relate to life challenges, resistance to soul consciousness, the hermit archetype, the lover archetype and valuable information that he has learned over the course of his travels working with many masters. He has come to a place of offering all this knowledge to help humanity in his course “Abundance Archetype method”. My wish is for you to learn and resonate with Jason to find your chosen path to growth. Jason became a billion-dollar portfolio manager and partner to hedge fund legend, Paul Tudor Jones, at Tudor Investment. By the age of 26, he was recognized as one of the top 30 traders under 30 years old in the World.  Yet his health was on an absolute decline.  He was 330 lbs. and suffered from a mental and physical health crisis. On a quest to become a master of both his inner and outer worlds, he decided to travel the world –– spending thousands of dollars and studying for thousands of hours learning directly from the greatest masters of a wide variety of healing arts, martial arts, holistic nutrition and movement, cutting edge psychology, and wisdom traditions of the East and West, ancient, indigenous and contemporary. He has now integrated the wisdom gained on this journey by creating The Abundance Archetype method to help you discover and actualize your super-natural capacities to create wealth and well-being in your life, to thrive at work while also feeling your best. This, in turn, will give you a greater sense of your reason for being alive –– at this pivotal moment in human history.Jason can be contacted via the following:Website is jasonpickard.orgIG is jasonpickardofficialThank you for learning and growing with me as we navigate the worlds' polarity. Feel free to visit me @ Insta: Balancedbody.Ashley, Facebook: “Ashley's Good Chi Circle, and on my website:  www.balancedbod.com for other podcasts. Stages of Initiation/GrowthThis podcast is a reminder of the stages one grows through and into as we evolve here in this lifetime. These stages can typically be times of tension, stagnation, suffering….well, not fun times. Ultimately to look at the end and how Death is perceived by you. We have had much death around us with this pandemic and what is your take on what death means to you? This information comes from the works of Joseph Cambell and C. Jung in the book entitled “Reflections on the Art of Living, A Joseph Cambell Companion” by Diane K. Osbon. I enjoy this book and the little section on initiations because it allows us to see where we can reflect and realize our own process of growing. I share this information as an opportunity to find the love within and move into a place of peace with ourself and others.  If there is anyone experiencing chaos in their life and could use some validation to what they may already know within themself then this is a perfect little listen. Let's dissect  fear and talk all around what that means from my perspective. I will discuss what it could mean if we choose not to let it go and hold onto it in our bodies. Fear can manifest into other emotional energies and words but all taking us to a vibration that may not serve us long term as we all can take the responsibility to evolve into a better version of ourselves. I have to end on the polarity and that is the positive energy associated with fear which means love. My favorite word….although not the highest vibrational word. How can we connect the dots and ultimately get to this higher but not highest vibration. There must be a conscious choice in this road traveled and I encourage one step forward in any direction to move you into realization. Join me as I walk down this perspective in coaching about FEAR.Feel free to visit me @ Inst: Balancedbody.ashley, Facebook: “Ashley's Good Chi Circle, and on my website:  www.balancedbod.com for other podcasts. This can be located in the midsection of our body and create physical dysfunctions. I am going to talk a little about the solar plexus or 3rd chakra then talk about what physically can happen in this area. As we create physical dysfunctions, lets also go deeper into the emotions of anger, power, autonomy ect. and mental forms that can contribute to the physical dysfunction. I will expand on some examples and how we can move forward out of dysfunction once it's brought to awareness. Feel free to visit me on www.balancedbod.com for other podcasts. Can you believe there was a time when Isis was worshipped as a Greek goddess, even sometimes one of the Olympians? Check out Lindsey's book on Isis worship and follow her on Twitter. CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.Attributions and licensing information for music used in the podcast can be found here: mythsbaby.com/sources-attributions.
