Do two trees ever appear identical? No, but why? Every small difference is a clue. Each tree we meet is filled with signs that reveal secrets about the life of that tree and the landscape we stand in. The clues are easy to spot when you know what to look for, but remain invisible to most people. In How to Read a Tree, you'll discover the simple principles that explain the shapes and patterns you can see in trees and what they mean. And you'll learn rare skills that can be applied every time you pass a tree, whether you are in a town or a wilder spot. As the author of the international bestsellers The Walker's Guide and How to Read Water, Tristan Gooley knows how to uncover the phenomena worth looking for. He has been instructing people in the art of reading trees for two decades and this book includes signs that will not be found in any other book in the world. Once you have learned to see these things it is impossible to unsee them. We will never look at a tree the same way again.

Actually, it is one way to read water with four parts. But that is way too long for a podcast title. After sharing an anecdote about my failing to read water well, I go into my four-pronged approach to approaching rivers. While not remarkable or novel, I believe that this multi-tiered technique is a great paradigm to help new anglers grasp the concept. It is also a great reminder or teaching tool for those of us who have been at this fly fishing thing for a while. Instead of just getting out there and flailing away at the deepest pool, take a minute to read the water. There might be fish there. In this episode Medical Director Dr Will Duffin welcomes back The Natural Navigator Tristan Gooley to share insights from his latest book ‘The Secret World of Weather'.    They discuss: Early 19th-century technology and attempts at weather forecasting and what happened to Admiral Robert Fitzroy when he first attempted to predict the weather…. Why ‘big weather' that is forecast on modern supercomputers doesn't match the weather that we actually experience at ground level. The three key cloud families, how to spot them and what they can tell you about local weather. Reading a cumulus cloud for signs of rain. Local winds and rebel winds. What shapes them and why what we experience at ground level can be very different from what is forecast. The best and worse trees to shelter from a storm under. Putting it all into practice - on a wild camp on Dartmoor do you sleep up high on a Tor or down low in the Valley and why? Tristan's thoughts on polymathy in contrast to ultra-specialisation. How Tristan has blended expertise from the diverse fields of geology, physics, botany and anthropology to generate fresh ideas. We reflect on how diverse skillsets in Extreme Medicine can have the same effect. More about the guest:   Tristan Gooley is an author and natural navigator. Tristan set up his natural navigation school in 2008 and is the author of award-winning and internationally bestselling books, including The Natural Navigator (2010) The Lost Art of Reading Nature's Signs (2014), How to Read Water (2016) and The Secret World of Weather (2021), some of the world's only books covering natural navigation. Author of the international bestsellers The Walker's Guide and How to Read Water illuminates another subject of perennial interest and importance: the weather. The weather changes as we walk around a tree or turn down a street. There is a secret world of weather - one that we all live in, but very few see. Each day we pass dozens of small weather signs that reveal what the weather is doing all around us - and what is about to happen. The clues are easy to spot when you know how, but remain invisible to most people. In The Secret World of Weather you'll discover the simple rules that explain the weather signs. And you'll learn rare skills that enhance every minute you spend outdoors, whether you are in a town, on a beach or in a wilder spot. Tristan Gooley knows how to de-code the phenomena and what signs to look for. As he says, 'I want you to get to know these signs as I have, as characters. By studying their habits and behaviours, the signs come to life and the meaning reveals itself. From this flows an ability to read what is happening and what is about to happen'. This is the ultimate guide to exploring an undiscovered world, one that hides in front of our eyes.

The 10th of October was World Mental Health Day. Now my social media feed will be biased, as all I ever subscribe to are wild swimming related things, but I was nonetheless overwhelmed by how many people testified to the mental health benefits of wild swimming. This got me thinking. What is it for me about wild swimming that I find so therapeutic? Well firstly, it is the community. I’ve made more genuine friends in the last 18 months through wild swimming than I’ve made in the last 5 years. And being part of a community means feeling connected. To other people. To places. I’ve also found that most members of that community are especially accepting of diversity. I’ve never heard anyone comment on someone’s size or shape, on what they were wearing, or on what time, speed or distance they swam. I’ve felt totally accepted, and welcomed, as another valued member of the merry band of people who regularly put the need to be in the water ahead of maintaining dignity in a car park. I love how wild swimming gets you right into nature, and gives you a unique perspective on it. You are right in it. Literally immersed. Eye level becomes something completely different. In this week’s podcast I talk to Marie. Her conversation about swimming is almost hypnotic. You can feel her love of the movement of the sea in the way she talks about it. Her whole manner conveys the peace of swimming which she values so much. And yet the night we swam, it was blowing a gale and the waves were dumping us onto the beach like pebbles. She talks about wild swimming forcing your mind back into your body. Pressing the reset button. Keeping you sane. And she warns about becoming complacent. The water is powerful and will catch you out if you switch off or don’t pay it enough respect. Community. Friendship. Nature. Mindfulness. Fun. Perspective. Attention. These are the reasons, for me, why wild swimming is good for my mental health. What about you? Places we talk about Hetton pool, Roker pier, Wastwater, Portishead lido, Clevedon Pier Clubs we talk about Fausto bathing club Other stuff we talk about Speedos, fluffy poncho robes, polarised goggles, The Handmaid’s Tale, How to Read Water by Tristan Gooley

A listener turned Chris on to Ray Wilson and his Music From Outer Space website on DIY analog synths and book Make: Analog Synthesizers. After collecting parts for a total DIY, he found and built a neat kit: Kastle Synth (as heard on the show) and has connected it to his Roland SE-02 Analog Synthesizer (on Amazon). BTW, his ham radio WSPR kit is the Ultimate 3 in case you are behind on hobbies. You can hear more about it in 197: Smell the Transistor. Elecia has been working through Udacity’s Self-Driving Engineer nanodegree. She completed term 1 with its computer vision and machine learning and is on to term 2 with sensor fusion, localization, and control. She blissfully is unaware of the cost because she got to be an industry expert for the Intro to Self-Driving Cars course. Listener Simon asked about non-fiction books. Elecia gets many of hers by looking at what is on discount at BookBub’s science section which lead to two books she highly recommends Spirals in Time (snail facts) and Tristan Gooley’s How to Read Water (beach explainer). Chris has been reading Scott Wolley’s The Network: The Battle for the Airwaves and the Birth of the Communications Age and How Music Works by David Byrne. Some show-related recommendations include Gretchen Bakke’s The Grid (hear Gretchen on episode 213: Electricity Doesn’t Behave Like an Apple) and Jimmy Soni’s Mind at Play (hear Jimmy on episode 221: Hiding in Plain Sight). She’s reading Tim O’Reilly’s WTF book about the future in anticipation of an upcoming episode. That's a good reminder: we, of course, also recommend Making Embedded Systems. Zach asked about Michael Barr’s Embedded Software Training in a Box. Apologies if we weren’t specific enough, it would likely make a better blog post. Also: $1 Microcontrollers!
