Even though the Toronto Blue Jays traded away Spencer Horwitz, their only recent Jewish player, there are still multiple Hebraic angles that our Jewish sports podcasters are celebrating as the team charges into the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers this week. The father-son team of Dan and Ben Shulman will be calling the Jays' broadcasts; macher Mark Shapiro sits as team president and CEO; two of the biggest celebrity fans include Eugene Levy and Geddy Lee; and at least two rabbis—one in Toronto, the other in L.A.—have engaged in a friendly wager over the outcome. Menschwarmers co-hosts Gabe Pulver and James Hirsh dig into all this as the two lifelong Jays fans get ready for Game 1 on Friday night. After that, Gabe sits down with soccer journalist and broadcaster David Gass (co-host of the Kickback Committee podcast), who explains all the chaos of the last week involving Israeli soccer teams, including Birmingham's decision to ban fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv team and a subsequent called-off match between Maccabi and Hapoel Tel Aviv. This Week on The Trawl it's winners and losers time... and Reform appear to be losing in a rather spectacular fashion. Marina and Jemma break down the implosion: Russian ties, disappearing councillors, and a Kent council Zoom meltdown that makes Jackie Weaver look like a stateswoman. Oh, and Nigel Farage's partner? She's now reportedly embroiled in a criminal probe over alleged EU fund fraud. Suddenly it's all looking a bit spicy...Meanwhile, the Greens are quietly stacking up wins, the Lib Dems are snatching by-elections, and Reform's “party of business” can't even file VAT properly. If this is their political auditions, they're flunking hard. Then it's the Aston Villa vs. Maccabi Tel Aviv saga, where British politicians united to defend a fanbase banned for racist violence. The outrage machine kicked into action and Starmer ended up looking like a massive bell after the Israeli police banned their own fans - unless of course they're antisemitic too? Plus: Celia Imrie's viral moment, Traitors spoilers (don't worry, none here), and Tommy Robinson's baffling football pivot to Tel Aviv Yellow. It's football, farce, and fury - with a side of righteous indignation.Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcast Patreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcast Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawl Twitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcastIf you've even mildly enjoyed The Trawl, you'll love the unfiltered, no-holds-barred extras from Jemma & Marina over on Patreon, including:• Exclusive episodes of The Trawl Goss – where Jemma and Marina spill backstage gossip, dive into their personal lives, and often forget the mic is on• Early access to The Trawl Meets…• Glorious ad-free episodesPlus, there's a bell-free community of over 3,300 legends sparking brilliant chat. And it's your way to support the pod which the ladies pour their hearts, souls (and occasional anxiety) into. With another international window in the books, it's time to dive back into AGT Thursdays! We start with Nottingham Forest, who actually did the thing and sacked Ange Postecoglou, making his stint in charge the second-shortest in league history. We argue why this falls mostly on then shoulders of Marinakis rather than his Greek compatriot and wonder where the club goes from here. Elsewhere in the Midlands, Villa stirred up controversy when the police banned Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from traveling to Birmingham for their match-day 4 clash. But is the situation misunderstood by the wider public? We also touch on the recent international window, where Cape Verde became the second-smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup and congratulate their heach coach, Bubista. There's a bit of Welsh theme in the podcast this week. Lesley, having just come back from speaking at an all-under-one-banner Cymru rally in Rhyl gives us the low down on all things Welsh, the Welsh indepdendence movement and the revival of the Welsh language. We talk about up coming changes to the Welsh voting system, scrapping what we've got for the Scottish elections which still has the first-past-the-post and the move to a completely proportional system. Why aren't we talking about that here in Scotland? We also discuss the separate Yes movement, Yes Cymru, which was set up in 2014 and is separate to the Welsh indpendence supporting parties. We also look at more authoritarian moves by UK Labour and breifly discuss the fall out over the ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans traveling to the watch a game against Aston Villa. And the Prince formerly knows as Duke of York and the timidity of the UK Labour government to just deal properly with stripping his titles.LinksREVIVE's national conference, a landmark event that is set to be a pivotal moment in Scotland's land reform journey.https://www.perththeatreandconcerthall.com/whats-on/revive-what-scotland-wants-real-land-reformSenedd Elections changeshttps://senedd.wales/senedd-now/senedd-blog/how-will-the-new-voting-system-work-at-the-next-senedd-election/Welsh placename projecthttps://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/oct/19/welsh-placenames-submitted-to-wales-project-protect-linguistic-heritage ★ Support this podcast ★

Most of the time the right-wing media scream that government should not interfere with the police. But when the police make a decision the media disapproves of, it screams the opposite. In doing so this tells us much about the blurred lines of responsibility and the confusion about the role of the state – that partly explains why 'nothing works' remains a powerful motif in British politics. It's been a rough week for the government: the row over the collapsed Chinese spy trial has rolled on, all while the Chancellor has been trying to lay the groundwork ahead of next month's budget. Then, overnight, another issue has emerged as fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team have been banned from attending a football game against Aston Villa next month, leading to accusations of antisemitism.Tim Shipman and Michael Simmons join James Heale to discuss the day's developments. Tim reveals how the Chinese spy row has been picked up by American legislators, threatening to undermine the Five Eyes security alliance. Meanwhile Michael points out that the news that the IMF has upgraded UK growth forecasts – to the second fastest growing of the G7 – might not be all it seems.Produced by Patrick Gibbons.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Ministers have spent the day in discussions about how to reverse a decision to ban supporters of the Israeli football team, Maccabi Tel Aviv, from attending a match in Birmingham next month. Also: The Government fails in its efforts to stop a challenge to its decision to ban Palestine Action as a terror organisation. And King Charles is to become the first British monarch to pray with a Pope since the Reformation 500 years ago.
#JonGaunt #PrinceWilliam #KeirStarmer #AyoubKhan #FanBan #FootballJustice #FreeTheFans #AstonVilla #MaccabiTelAviv Enough is enough. British football is at a crossroads — and this disgraceful decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending the Europa League clash at Villa Park is a line that should never have been crossed. The Prime Minister himself says it's “the wrong decision,” yet the authorities plough on, silencing supporters and staining the reputation of our national game. In this show, we're calling this out for what it is: a cowardly, discriminatory move dressed up as “public safety.” West Midlands Police and the local Safety Advisory Group must answer for their actions — and if they can't justify this outrageous ban, then heads should roll. This is Britain: we do not exclude fans because of who they are or where they come from. It's time for real leadership. Prince William — as Aston Villa's most famous fan and a future king — must speak up and help overturn this injustice. And if the police leadership cannot defend the indefensible, they should step aside. Join Jon Gaunt live as he demands accountability, exposes the failures behind this scandal, and fight for the principle that football belongs to everyone. #JonGaunt #PrinceWilliam #KeirStarmer #AyoubKhan #FanBan #FootballJustice #FreeTheFans #AstonVilla #MaccabiTelAviv #EuropaLeague Jon Gaunt, Prince William, Ayoub Khan, Aston Villa, fan ban, Maccabi Tel Aviv, football justice, UK politics, free the fans, Villa Park, Europa League, football rights This is political blogging and hard-hitting social commentary from Triple Sony Gold Award-winning talk radio legend, Jon Gaunt — former host on BBC, Talk Radio, and Sky News. Keir Starmer has leapt to the defence of Israeli football hooligans, condemning a ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending an upcoming Europa League game against Aston Villa. Plus: The government have failed to stop a legal challenge against the controversial proscription of Palestine Action. With Aaron Bastani and NoJusticeMTG.
Today discussions to resolve the ban on fans of an Israeli football club attending a match against Aston Villa are happening “at pace, across government”, Downing Street has insisted. Sir Keir Starmer was “angered by the decision” to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from next month's Europa League game in Birmingham amid public safety fears, and linked it to antisemitism. But West Midlands Police said it supported the decision, saying it had classified the fixture as “high-risk”.
