Redeeming Power with Diane LangbergPsychologist and author Dr. Diane Langberg joins our podcast to discuss the themes in her book, Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church. Dr. Langberg who has been working with survivors of trauma and abuse, clergy, and caregivers for almost 50 years, desires to increase awareness and understanding of power and its abuse so those who have been abandoned by broken systems of power can be defended and protected.Defending dysfunctional and abusive systems"When we think about a system of any kind, whether it's a government or some kind of organization, or the church, which is a system, it's people standing together usually for a particular goal or purpose or whatever. And so what the people want to do is maintain the system because of what it gives them. So if you come along and say, the person who's running that system is a wolf and is devouring the sheep, nobody wants to hear that. Because if that's the case, then the thing that they believe in that keeps them safe isn't safe. That's terrifying." - Diane LangbergIn this conversation Dr. Langberg discusses the purposes, dynamics, systems, and proper place of power, as well as the ways in which it can deform and distort, noting that “our responses to the vulnerable expose who we are.”And she noted that while “much of Christendom today seems less interested in seeing as Jesus saw…and far more interested in gaining power,” there is also the invitation and opportunity before us to “cross divides, step out of high positions, and reach out with love to those who are vulnerable, whose power is little or trampled, bestowing benedictions as we go.” We trust you'll find this conversation inspiring and hopeful. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation from July 2021. It's been 2000 years. Enough already.Abusing power is an ancient genre of sin — and using religion to justify abuse is perhaps the oldest trick in that book. We know it won't stop with this podcast episode, but, here we go anyway. Katelyn and Roxy address some of the difficulties of identifying spiritual abuse (no, it isn't just "church hurt") and examine how it has manifested in a few more recent and notable scandals. Veteran psychologist and expert on religious trauma, Diane Langberg, joins the episode and helps put the "pastoral" back in the pulpit.GUEST:Diane Langberg is a psychologist with more than 50 years of experience working with trauma survivors. What a true honor to have Dr. Diane Langberg on the show today. Her book, Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church, has taught me so much about trauma, abuse, and power. In this conversation, Dr. Langberg teaches us about paying attention to our own power, misusing that power, and balancing love for our local church with accountability. If abuse is a part of your story, I would encourage you to listen with someone who loves you. This conversation may be tender to you, so I wanted you to know before you listened so you could care for yourself and your heart well. And, for our #miniBFFs, this show may be a bit much for their little ears. . . . . Sign up to receive the AFD Week In Review email and ask questions to future guests! #thatsoundsfunpodcast . . . . . On this episode of the podcast, I am joined by guest co-host Dr. Tara Boer (professor of social work). Together we interview Dr. Diane Langberg, an internationally recognized psychologist, counselor, and speaker, who is also the author of the book Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church (Brazos, 2020). Among the topics we discuss: How do we define power, vulnerability, and abuse? How can we identify "spiritual abuse" in a church context? Why have some Christians been resistant to the #metoo or #churchtoo movements? Are false accusations a legitimate threat? What does it mean to redeem power? What safeguards can be put in place, especially in male-dominated settings? How do we support victims and help them heal? How have you, during a 50+ year career dealing with these difficult issues, found the courage and hope to continue? Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

The words of Jesus can be confusing especially when Jesus is quoting the Old Testament. Join DJ Freemyer for 700 Seconds in a Psalm as we prepare for Easter together by looking at Psalms that Jesus quotes during holy week. This series is designed for listeners who want inspiration for preaching or devotions especially during Lent. During our times of need, it can be surprising when the people we expect to help harm us instead. Jesus warns the disciples that the time will come when they will be shown no compassion, but followers of Jesus have a choice in those moments. The followers can choose to respond with hate or like the psalmist does. When we listen to Psalm 69, we can hear what Jesus embraced throughout his life according John's gospel and even during his death. Let's jump in to the text this week to learn more about why Jesus quoted this Psalm in John 15. As one of most frequently quoted Psalms in the gospel of John, Psalm 69 sets the tone and structure of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Clearly, this Psalm is highly significant if Jesus not only quotes it but seeks to live by it. djbiblecoaching.comResources for Going Deeper:"Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church" by Diane Langberg.Guest Pastors:Pastor Daniel Walker, Founder of Camino RoadIntro and Outro Music:Jaybin Beutler
