We hope to be a safe haven for people on their faith journey. Let's talk about the trauma that many people went through in Scripture. Not to compare or downplay ours, but to relate, empathize, and know we're not alone.
Mary DeMuth shares her journey of experiencing harm in a Dallas megachurch, but finding Jesus and healing in the wreckage.
If we're going to try to help reform the broken system of the church, we have to unpack the trauma that is created by mean Christians.

Today, I'm talking with Aimee Byrd—an author who often pushes us to question norms we usually take for granted. If you've ever felt the pressure to put on a mask or hide parts of who you really are, you'll find this conversation meaningful. In her latest book, "Saving Face," Aimee dives into the masks we all wear, the ways we conceal ourselves, and what it takes to discover our authentic selves underneath it all. We'll unpack some thoughtful questions: What stories do our faces reveal? What changes when we drop the act and allow ourselves to be seen? Aimee shares honestly from her experiences with spiritual abuse, theological reflection, and her personal journey toward healing and authenticity. We also discuss journaling, encountering Jesus in surprising moments, and why truly seeing each other might hold answers for a deeply divided society. If you're navigating issues of faith, identity, or just interested in genuine connection, I think you'll find this episode insightful and practical. Let's get into it—this is about what it means to save face by choosing to show our real faces.Aimee Byrd is author, speaker, blogger, podcaster and former coffee shop owner. Aimee is the author of several books, including Saving Face, The Hope in Our Scars, Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and Sexual Reformation. Her articles have appeared in First Things, Table Talk, Modern Reformation, By Faith, New Horizons, Ordained Servant, Harvest USA, and Credo Magazine and she has been interviewed and quoted in Christianity Today and The Atlantic.Aimee's Book:Saving FaceAimee's Recommendation:Till We Have FacesSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. If we're going to try to help reform the broken system of the church, we have to unpack the trauma that is created by over-spiritualization - where we credit God for things He doesn't do and say things to grieving people that aren't helpful.
In this episode, we discuss the trauma and pain apparent in the Asian-American/Korean-American church, how to untangle and how to even heal as a church.
If we're going to try to help reform the broken system of the church, we have to unpack the trauma that is created by improper humility - the teaching that causes people not to love themselves, trust themselves, or trust their God given intuition.
If we're going to try to help reform the broken system of the church, we have to unpack the trauma that is created by performance driven Christianity - the machine where systems and behavior are above people and their process. If your spiritual stance with God hinges on your actions, you've misunderstood God's unconditional love and grace.
If we're going to try to help reform the broken system of the church, we have to unpack the trauma that is created by fear - issues like the rapture, the devil, spiritual warfare, hell, judgment, and wrath.
We're talking about it because we must! The power that comes from religion shapes us, some for better, others for worse. We want to be a part of the organizational side of church that helps bring healing - giving time and space for people to process their pain and deal with bitterness and resentment.
Glenn Bleakney sits down with Shaneen Clarke, a dynamic Christian speaker and John Maxwell certified life coach, for an unflinching look at faith, healing, and the complex reality of spiritual trauma. Against the backdrop of recent church leadership controversies, Shaneen draws from her extensive ministry experience to explore the delicate balance between maintaining faith and processing hurt within religious communities.Drawing from her own journey and years of guiding others, Shaneen offers a compassionate roadmap for those wrestling with their spiritual identity after experiencing emotional abuse in faith settings. She tackles the challenging question many face: how do we reconcile our image of a loving God with painful experiences in His church? This episode delves deep into the healing process, offering practical wisdom for rebuilding trust and finding authentic community after church hurt. Shaneen shares transformative insights on the power of forgiveness without diminishing the validity of pain, while providing concrete tools for those ready to step into their next chapter of faith.Whether you're personally processing church trauma or supporting someone who is, this conversation offers both validation and hope for the journey ahead.Learn more about us at https://kingdomreformation.org and https://Kingdomcommunity.tv

In the latest episode of the Straight Truth podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot address the painful topic of mistreatment within the church. They recognize that believers, while transformed by Christ, still exist in a world marked by pain and imperfection, including within church communities. Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that while hurtful experiences are real and shouldn't be minimized, there's a tendency for people today to be overly sensitive to their own injuries, sometimes exaggerating wrongs. He stresses the importance of understanding the fleeting nature of life and relying on God's strength to navigate adversity. For those seeking a new church after experiencing harm, he advises seeking doctrinally faithful institutions with qualified leaders, while also setting realistic expectations. True healing in any church community requires addressing sins through confession, repentance, and forgiveness, constantly extending and receiving grace from one another. Even in well-meaning churches, challenges will arise, but they should be handled in alignment with both legal standards and New Testament teachings.

The deconstruction movement has swept through American Christianity for the last few years, leaving very polarized opinions of what it is and its credibility. I myself have not been a part of that movement, not because I don't affirm it, but because I haven't had that experience. I never had a moment of “deconstruction.” For me, most of my Christian walk has been asking the tough questions and readjusting my beliefs based on my experiences, knowledge of scripture and new information I've acquired. But for many, there was a moment of realizing that they may not agree or believe everything they've been taught in American Christianity. This movement has had the boldness to address some major inconsistencies in the church and have had the courage to question why they believe what they believe. For some, deconstruction has lead them to greater faith in Jesus and for others it's lead to the decision that they do not believe in Him. Wherever you find yourself, this episode will address each component of this process. Learn more about Danny and his church. Check out "The Deconstruction Zone" podcast. Watch us on YouTube.
