Today's guest is Richard Aceves. Richard is an innovative movement specialist with a diverse athletic background. After a mountaineering near death experience at an early age, he worked his way back to health and training capacity, eventually working towards becoming an elite powerlifter, professional GRID athlete, and has experience in a variety of strength and movement practices. Richard is a coach, mentor, education and pioneer in the world of movement in context of the human experience. There are always going to be pendulum swings in any profession, and sport performance is no exception. On the level of conditioning, success in sport is more about skill, tactics, speed, confidence than the adaptation acquired from grinding out tough conditioning sessions. At the same time, there is a mental, physical and emotional gold that can be found, when the body is pushed to its limits. Using physical exploration and stressors with purpose can provide a far fuller and more rewarding experience to each individual, allowing them to level up in new ways that go beyond sport, into life itself. On today's podcast, Richard covers his near-death experience and injury that kickstarted his journey into the inner aspects of human performance. Throughout the episode, Richard covers the physical, mention and emotional aspects of training, and how training can be modulated to address each of these important elements of both athletic ability, and our human experience. Richard goes into his warmup process, and breaks down the dynamics of a “good” and “poor” conditioning session, and how to better facilitate the conditioning process. Being able to get into the “present-minded” state is one of the most important elements in both training, and in life, and Richard goes into this concept heavily in this episode. Today on the Debrief, Coaches Rachel and Tom will be dropping tips on how to improve your mood, energy and drive through mindset training. They'll help you from both a mindset and a physical perspective to stop having to drag yourself to the gym. They'll be drawing on the episode they recorded with Richard Aceves of StrongFit and Movement Ayahuasca. If you want to listen to that episode, that will prep you for this episode, but you can listen to this individually too. Questions Tom and Rachel will answer include: What kind of rest is good and bad for your recovery? How can you reserve energy? How do you stop making decisions which drain your energy?

Can your mentality be affected by your left pec? How does being in fight or flight change your training? What role does nutrition play on your mood. These are all discussed in today's podcast with the wonderful, Richard Aceves
StrongFit leader and coach, Richard Aceves. Richard shares about the process of coaching the whole human and not specifically looking at athletic performance. Shifting his mindset from athlete to coach has been an insightful process and one of the keys to this for Richard was learning "how to learn" and not focusing on memorizing information. A big focus within Richards's philosophy is explaining and coaching the proper position of each movement to his clients which will minimize injury and maximize potential. You will learn about the process of coaching and empowering other humans through movement as Richard Aceves and Bryce Smith share about their coaching experiences.

When he is not busy traveling, podcasting or changing the world he is raising his daughter in an environment of love and curiosity. He is a man on a journey inward as much as he is outward. This week, Tyler hangs out with Richard Aceves of Strongfit after wrapping up the Coaches Week at CrossFit 1080 in Woodbury, MN. This week, Tyler sat down with Julien Pineau and Richard Aceves of StrongFit to discuss what he had learned thus far after attending the StrongFit Seminar and Coaches Week. Basically, Tyler's athletic abilities were comically awful, but Julien says there may still be hope for him! Julien and Richard are working to develop the CrossFit training methodology into a more sustainable, movement-based methodology in hopes of avoiding the common injuries and pitfalls that continue to derail competitive CrossFitters. Their goal of sustainable, logical fitness training for the average Joe is something that we here at Massenomics can definitely get behind. Listen to it in audio format below.. On today's show, I am joined by the guys who have had the biggest influence on my training and coaching in the last 5 years; Julien Pineau and Richard Aceves. If you haven't been following their work through StrongFit, I can't recommend it enough. A little side note, there's a StrongFit Summit in Vienna, Austria in September which will be a 3 day event of serious knowledge. I'm super excited about this. If you go, you'll not only listen to these guys, but myself too. Anyway, today we discuss coaching in all its importance. In particular how to build a master craftsman's mindset. We also go into how to embrace intensity to get the most from it. A quick caveat, the sound quality is poor at times! We recorded this in Shoreditch Park on one of the hottest days of the year. So, it's windy at times I'm afraid! The content is top notch though and its worth getting through the sound quality issues.
A quick apology about how inconsistent these podcasts have been recently! There are plenty on the way. In fact, at the same time I upload this one, I'm going to be uploading 2 others to release for the next two weeks. One with Julien Pineau and Richard Aceves from StrongFit and one with Brian Mackenzie which I recorded yesterday. On today's episode, I am joined by Patrick Vellner, 3rd place finisher at last year's CrossFit Games. I won't get into too much of Pat's backstory as we go into it in some detail in the show. It's safe to say though, the mindset that allows him to compete at the biggest stage in CrossFit has been learned and earned. The stories he tells are indicitive of a champ, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how Pat does in this year's Games.
