(Víspera del Día del Niño en México) Cubierto de jiras, al ábrego hirsutas al par que las mechas crecidas y rubias, el pobre chiquillo se postra en la tumba; y en voz de sollozos revienta y murmura: «Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva. «¡Qué bien que me acuerdo! La tarde de lluvia; las velas grandotas que olían a curas; y tú en aquel catre tan tiesa, tan muda, tan fría, tan seria, y así tan rechula. Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva. «Buscando comida, revuelvo basura. Si pido limosna, la gente me insulta, me agarra la oreja, me dice granuja, y escapo con miedo de que haya denuncia. Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva. «Los otros muchachos se ríen, se burlan, se meten conmigo, y a poco me acusan de pleito al gendarme que viene a la bulla; y todo, porque ando con tiras y sucias. Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva. «Me acuesto en rincones solito y a oscuras. De noche, ya sabes, los ruidos me asustan. Los perros divisan espantos y aúllan. Las ratas me muerden, las piedras me punzan... Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva. «Papá no me quiere. Está donde juzga y riñe a los hombres que tienen la culpa. Si voy a buscarlo, él bota la pluma, se pone furioso, me ofrece una tunda. Mamá, soy Paquito; no haré travesuras.» Y un cielo impasible despliega su curva.1 A este conmovedor poema, que ha formado parte del repertorio de declamadores y festejos de las escuelas primarias2 desde que se publicó a comienzos del siglo veinte, el excelso poeta veracruzano Salvador Díaz Mirón simplemente le puso por título «Paquito». Es uno de los cuarenta poemas de los que se compone la obra titulada Lascas, a la que el profesor Manuel Sol califica como «estéticamente uno de los libros más originales en lengua española».3 Con sólo escuchar los versos de «Paquito», vemos por qué el Premio Nobel mexicano Octavio Paz dijo de su paisano: «La poesía de Díaz Mirón posee la dulzura y el esplendor del diamante, un diamante al que no faltan, sino le sobran, luces.»4 Si extendemos la metáfora de Octavio Paz, vemos que el poema «Paquito» en particular es además un diamante al que le sobra agudeza, pues es cortante de un modo parecido a la palabra de Dios, que «penetra hasta lo más profundo del alma y del espíritu, hasta la médula de los huesos».5 ¡Cómo nos parte el alma la trágica figura de Paquito! Su desgraciado padre, tan indiferente e imperturbable como el cielo impasible, es incapaz de sentir el dolor del hijo al que ha abandonado a un destino de miseria no sólo física sino también emocional, ya que ese hijo hasta se siente culpable de la muerte prematura de su querida madre. Pero gracias a Dios, su Hijo Jesucristo comprende a todos los Paquitos del mundo. Habiendo sufrido, como ellos, el abandono de parte de los suyos,6 Cristo les muestra compasión ofreciéndoles ayuda en el momento que más la necesitan. Amy is joined by Dr. Susie Porter to discuss her book From Angel to Office Worker and explore the nuances of class, gender, and labor in Mexico. Dr. Susie Porter is a Presidential Societal Impact Scholar and Distinguished Professor in the Humanities. She serves as a country conditions expert for asylum cases, was a founder of the Westside Leadership Institute (Spanish language version), and works as an organizer with the Salt Lake City Latinx community. She served as Chair of the Gender Studies Division (2010-2020) and, since 2021, as Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. Porter is the author of two award-winning books: Workingwomen in Mexico City (Arizona, 2003); and From Angel to Office Worker: Middle-Class Identity and Female Consciousness in Mexico, 1890-1950 (Nebraska, 2018)-both also published by El Colegio de Michoacán press. Porter is co-editor of Orden social e identidad de género, with María Teresa Fernández Aceves and Carmen Ramos Escandón (2006); and, Género en la encrucijada de la historia social y cultural, with Fernández Aceves (2015).
