Games, memes, and parodies are increasingly used by extremist groups to spread misinformation and to lower the barriers to entry into extreme ideologies. But is there a deeper strategy at work? And if so, what's the end game? In Part 2 of this special two part interview, Dr. Sara Grimes chats with three researchers from the Reactionary Digital Politics Research Group, a multi-disciplinary collaboration based in the UK that has spent the past five years tracking the rise and spread of extremist and alt-right political ideologies, rhetorics, and aesthetics online.  Dr. Alan Finlayson is a Professor of Political and Social Theory at the University of East Anglia, in Norwich England, and the author of Making Sense of New Labour  (Lawrence and Wishart, 2003). Dr. Robert Topinka is a Senior Lecturer in Transnational Media and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, and the author of Racing the Street: Race, Rhetoric and Technology in Metropolitan London, 1840-1900 (University of California Press, 2020). And Dr. Rob Gallagher is a Lecturer in Film and Media in the Department of English at Manchester Metropolitan University and author of Videogames, Identity and Digital Subjectivity (Routledge, 2017). In this episode, the Reactionary Digital Politics team discusses findings and arguments advanced in Dr. Topinka's recent article, entitled "Back to a Past that was Futuristic: The Alt-Right and the Uncanny Form of Racism," published in b2o: an online journal in 2019. Type of research discussed in today's episode: rhetorical analysis, discourse analysis, media studies, content analysis, critical analysis. Keywords for today's episode: reactionary politics, extremism, alt-right, cultural (re)appropriation, reactionary racism, insider/outsider identity, identity politics. For more information and a full transcript of each episode, check out our website: http://kmdi.utoronto.ca/the-critical-technology-podcast/ Send questions or comments to: criticaltechpod.kmdi@utoronto.ca

In an era of high political melodrama there has to be a ‘big bad' weaving a tangled web. In this episode we theorise conspiracy theories - from racist myths about ‘globalists' plotting white genocide to fevered dreams of Hollywood Satanists harvesting ‘adrenochrome' from stolen children. What makes these absurdities so compelling for so many? What is it about the digital portal that invites us to fall into them? What have they inherited from older conspiracy narratives? And how have movements like QAnon used digital technologies to make believers feel like heroic sleuths fighting the good fight together? In this episode secrets are revealed, an anonymous informant spills the beans and we do our own research.   Presented by: Alan Finlayson, Rob Gallagher, Sophie Ludkin & Rob Topinka With: Clare Birchall, Florian Cramer, Matthew Feldman, Annie Kelly, Hugo Leal & Wu Ming 1 Produced by: Sophie Ludkin Special thanks to: Cassian Osborne-Carey Music composed by Harriet Riley and produced by Tom Jacob   Find us:   On YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNdYeOghWVoIb4vZF0B9jwQ/featured On Email:  reactionarydigitalpolitics@gmail.com

Politics used to be easy. There was the left. There was the right. There was a bit in the middle. Politicians wore suits and were awkward on television. Protestors marched in the streets for fewer wars and more rights. And then everyone went online and found that they hated each other. In the last decade reactionary movements, from the alt-right to QAnon, have transformed politics using digital technologies. What happened? How? Why? We've asked some experts (because we can't get enough of them) and we found out a lot. This first episode lays out the jigsaw pieces we'll be assembling over the course of this series. We think about the social and cultural context against which digital politics have taken shape. We talk about the rise of social media platforms, the growth in what we call ‘ideological entrepreneurs', the blurring of politics into celebrity culture, the early adoption of the internet by the far-right and the impact of networked hate campaigns like #GamerGate. All of these laid the groundwork for new kinds of political ideology, style and identity.   Presented by: Alan Finlayson, Rob Gallagher, Sophie Ludkin & Rob Topinka With: Clare Birchall, Florian Cramer, Matthew Feldman, Annie Kelly, Hugo Leal, Becca Lewis & Whitney Phillips. Online, the marketplace of political ideas has become a free-for-all, as professional politicians compete for likes and subscribers with edgelords, influencers, conspiracist crackpots and unabashed extremists. This episode explores how the internet has accelerated the breakdown of familiar political ideologies, bringing fringe views to mass audiences and encouraging users to pick and mix political ideas from their personalised feeds. Along the way we survey some of the key groups and movements that have emerged from the online right in recent years, showing how an unholy alliance of religious paleoconservatives, antifeminist incels and outright neo-Nazis has united in opposition to the politics of equality.   Presented by: Alan Finlayson, Rob Gallagher, Sophie Ludkin & Rob Topinka With: Matthew Feldman, Debbie Ging, Hugo Leal, Becca Lewis & Whitney Phillips Produced by: Sophie Ludkin Special thanks to: Cassian Osborne-Carey Music composed by Harriet Riley and produced by Tom Jacob   Find us:   On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNdYeOghWVoIb4vZF0B9jwQ/featured On Email: reactionarydigitalpolitics@gmail.com

If there's one thing the internet loves it's an argument (and cats). This episode looks at the tactics political reactionaries have developed to sell their ideas, win converts and DESTROY their opponents online. Weaponising irony and free speech absolutism to represent themselves as transgressive rebels, the right has refined its culture-war playbook with each shitpost and pile-on. We think about how political appeals are dressed in the appealing garb of self-help advice and what's going on when phrases like ‘social justice warrior' or ‘cultural Marxism' rise from the bottom of the internet and float around in the cultural and political mainstream.   Presented by: Alan Finlayson, Rob Gallagher, Sophie Ludkin & Rob Topinka With: Matthew Feldman, Bharath Ganesh, Debbie Ging, Annie Kelly & Whitney Phillips  Produced by: Sophie Ludkin Special thanks to: Cassian Osborne-Carey   Find us:   On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNdYeOghWVoIb4vZF0B9jwQ/featured On Email: reactionarydigitalpolitics@gmail.com

These days, it's impossible to talk publicly about how things are going wrong with politics (economics, culture, society, climate etc.) without someone piping up at the end to spoil a good whinge by asking ‘So, what would you do about it?”. Well, we can be spoilsports too. At the end of all our conversations we asked our interviewees the same question: we now know that digital politics is a mess, but what do we do about it? In this final episode, we listen to and think about their answers - from demands to regulate social media platforms to calls to think better about our communications ecology. Are we just sharp edged critical theorists or will we turn out to have a soft moral centre? “Keywords in Play” is an interview series about game research supported by Critical Distance and the Digital Games Research Association. As a joint venture, “Keywords in Play” expands Critical Distance's commitment to innovative writing and research about games while using a conversational style to bring new and diverse scholarship to a wider audience. Our goal is to highlight the work of graduate students, early career researchers and scholars from under-represented groups, backgrounds and regions. The primary inspiration comes from sociologist and critic Raymond Williams. In the Preface to his book Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society, Williams envisaged not a static dictionary but an interactive document, encouraging readers to populate blank pages with their own keywords, notes and amendments. “Keywords in Play” follows Williams in affirming that “The significance is in the selection”, and works towards diversifying the critical terms with which we describe games and game culture. In this episode we speak with Rob Gallagher about "digital subjectivity". Rob was recently a postdoctoral researcher with the European Research Council-funded Ego Media Project at Kings College London, and is now a teaching fellow in literature and the digital at Royal Holloway, University of London. His book Videogames, Identity and Digital Subjectivity was published by Routledge in 2017.

NU-JAZZ REVIVAL. ACID JAZZ/DOWNTEMPO, DANCE FLOOR JAZZ, Acid Jazz was a term coined in the late 80's by Gilles Peterson, Chris Bangs and Eddie Piller. It describes a funky music style which incorporates elements of jazz, 70's funk, hip-hop, soul, as well as other genres. Culminating soon afterwards in the creation of Acid Jazz Records. It's first signing was Galliano, featuring lead singer Rob Gallagher. Hot on Galliano's heels came The Brand New Heavies, The New Jersey Kings (an alias for The James Taylor Quartet), Mother Earth and The Sandals. In 1990, Gilles Peterson left Acid Jazz Records and started a new label called Talkin' Loud, which continued the tradition, signing acts such as Courtney Pine, Incognito, The K-Creative, Omar and MC Solaar. Jazzillmatic Arksetra pays homage to the original Acid Jazz mob. AND TAKING IT FORWARD.....
