Madrid. Het witte shirt. Het heiligdom van de Bernabéu. Voor velen een droom. Voor enkelen: werkelijkheid. En voor een handvol Engelsen? Een hoofdstuk dat klinkt als een mythe.Laurie Cunningham schrijft geschiedenis. Zij kwamen, zij zagen, zij veranderden. This is occasionally—OK, almost never—called El Otro Clásico. It's a bit of a nod to the fact that these two clubs, BARCELONA and ATLÉTICO MADRID, have a shared enemy that they each hate more than their opponent here. Barça's beef with Real Madrid is the Clásico, Atléti's feud with their crosstown neighbors is a proper derby. This match is just a meeting of two of Spain's great institutions, a fixture that's spawned wild scorelines and decided league championships. In this case, it's a meeting of first and second in La Liga, and they're tied on 38 points.Joining us to preview the festivities is Ian Darke, the legendary commentator who's called matches across the world in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the World Cup. American fans might know him as the soundtrack to Landon Donovan's famous goal against Algeria in 2010, but he's also called some of the biggest matches in club football—like this one. He'll be behind the mic for ESPN on Saturday at 3pm Eastern Time, but first he's here with us to look ahead to the match—and look back on that time he and Steve McManaman stuck around the Camp Nou until 2 a.m. drinking beers with the locals! If you're enjoying The Football Weekend, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Back in the 1995-1996 Premier League season, Steve McManaman assisted 15 Premier League goals for Liverpool. Little did we know at the time that only two players had done so before him and Frank Lampard is the only English player to have done so since. That campaign remains one of Liverpool's finest and most overlooked seasons in the Premier League era, one where Steve McManaman was the driving creative force in a side who came much closer to the title than people remember. In this special episode of ‘Story Behind the Numbers', brought to you by Think Markets, Official Trading Partner of Liverpool Football Club, Steve McManaman joins Duncan Alexander and Graham Bell to discuss how football in the 1990s was different to the present day, how close-knit that team was and look at his rise to become arguably the most naturally creative English midfield of the 1990s. In fact, on one occasion the tightness of his shorts was such that it impeded him from scoring an easy goal for Wigan!Next up is Steve McManaman, who speaks about how Zizou endured a frustrating start at Real Madrid. Then came the 2002 Champions League final win over Bayer Leverkusen, and nobody doubted the great man after it.Lastly we hear from former Real president Ramón Calderón, who says how promoting Zinedine from the position of reserve team coach to the biggest role in club football management was a risk that paid off.Enjoy.Graham See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Here's another chance to hear my interview with Steve McManaman from season two.Johan Cruyff once described Steve as the partner to everyone on the pitch. He epitomised elegance, passing ability and vision, and graced the field with Real Madrid legends such as Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, Raul and the Brazilian Ronaldo. There was also Claude Makelele, the unsung hero who Steve reckons was the cog that made Los Galacticos tick and whose departure spelled their decline. We hear about how before that, this boyhood Evertonian learned at the feet of Liverpool greats. About how his decision to depart Merseyside for Real – a club apparently in turmoil – was vindicated when he won the Champions League in his first season there. About how conflict with the Madrid hierarchy spoiled a golden era. And if you want to know what it was like in the Camp Nou away dressing room after scoring in a Los Merengues victory in the semi-final of the Champions League, then listen in.This is truly legendary stuff. Tony reflects on his six eventful years at Liverpool, starting in the A-team under Steve Highway in 1993 and finishing as Gerard Houllier arrived in 1999. Despite not making an appearance for Liverpool, Warner witnessed the development of players such as Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen, whilst training alongside more LFC greats such as Steve McManaman, Ian Rush and John Barnes. Warner shares some entertaining stories including; how he had to try and balance his career as an accountant with his football exploits before signing for Liverpool, how he upset Julian Dicks at Mellwood and how he clashed with Stan Collymore and punched the manager (by accident) just before he was set to make his debut in pre-season. Post-Liverpool, Warner went on to play in an Old Firm derby for Celtic alongside Henrik Larsson and made 221 appearances for Millwall, where he was influential in their rise from Division 3 to the Championship. Everton listeners will also be surprised to learn that Warner had a role in Tim Cahill leaving Millwall for Everton, rather than Charlton! This podcast tells the story of a committed footballer who started from the very bottom, learnt his craft amongst the very best, before going on to carve out an excellent career as a first team keeper. Hello there!Today is Father's Day… on The Big Interview, at least. Yes, our latest clip show is dedicated to the men who mean the most to many of our guests from Season Two, who kept them on the straight and narrow, and who shared in their football successes. We begin with Mark Noble, the West Ham captain who phones his dad every morning on the way to training just to talk football. It is during those very chats that Mark is often reminded how lucky he is to play for the team he supported as a boy.Jonny Evans and Peter Crouch also grew up with parental guidance, with Peter's dad going the extra mile by introducing his son to the Coerver Method, while Steve McManaman revels in cherished childhood memories of going to matches with his dad.Chris Sutton and Alex McLeish both recall that their fathers favoured the tough love approach. And Benni McCarthy admits that he might have joined one of the deadly gangs he grew up around in South Africa, had it not been for the fear of what his dad would do to him if he did.But we leave it to Macca to have the final word in this clip show, as he explains how he ran to celebrate in front of his dad after scoring in a Champions League final. SIGNING FOR Real Madrid would change everything for Steve McManaman. The move turned him into a league champion and Champions League winner, but it also transformed the way he played the game. In part two, McManaman talks about reinventing himself as a holding midfielder to better serve a team which included the likes of Luis Figo and Fernando Redondo - a player McManaman still considers a great, even though injury crippled the Argentine's career. There is also an appreciation of the roles performed by Ronnie Whelan at Liverpool during the 80s, and Sergio Busquets in the current Barcelona side; fine support acts to some of the biggest stars in the game. Zinedine Zidane gets a mention, too, although not as you might expect. Listen to how this World Cup winner often looked lost during the early days of his Madrid career - before finding himself emphatically with a certain goal at Hampden - and why Claude Makelele was regarded as the most important player at the Bernabeu. The four years that Steve McManaman spent at Real Madrid can be summed up in two Champions League wins, two league titles, and one remark from none other than Johan Cruyff, who described the Merseyside Madridista as “el socio del todos” - a partner to everyone on the pitch. McManaman would have needed the help of an interpreter to translate such an endorsement during his early days in Spain, but the language barrier was to prove no impediment to the Englishman as he settled in immediately at the Bernabeu. He showed courage on the ball and in a social setting, mixing a cocktail of beers and crude hand gestures during a pre-season trip in Austria to ingratiate himself to his new team-mates. In part one, McManaman talks about his ambition to leave Liverpool and play abroad, the unexpected challenges of joining one of the biggest club teams in the world, and the second home he discovered in a dressing room which was supposed to be in turmoil.
