On the latest episode of The Tactical Leader Podcast, Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL, best-selling author, and host of the Danger Close podcast, shared his incredible journey from military service to becoming a top-tier author in the world of thrillers. Carr's reflections highlight the value of building upon a foundation established by previous generations of authors while adapting to today's constantly evolving media landscape.Jack Carr is a former Navy SEAL who served for 20 years, transitioning from military operations to becoming a successful author and podcast host. His military experience, particularly in tactical operations and leadership, deeply informs his writing, lending authenticity to his thrillers. Carr's time in the Navy SEALs laid the foundation for his post-service career, where he draws on his battlefield experiences to create compelling, action-packed stories. His journey from elite military service to top-tier author showcases his adaptability and commitment to excellence across different fields.Building on the Legacy of Great AuthorsCarr emphasized how crucial it has been for him to recognize and build upon the literary foundations laid by iconic thriller authors. "I'm not just regurgitating things—I'm building off the foundation that's been built by all these other authors," he explained. He cited classic stories like *The Most Dangerous Game* and *Rogue Male* as significant inspirations, but it didn't stop there. Carr outlined a timeline of influences, including legendary figures like Ian Fleming, John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, David Morrell, and Nelson DeMille.Carr acknowledges that the works of these authors have allowed him to forge his own path. "These guys gave me this foundation by writing such amazing books, and I build on that," he said, adding that he's taken lessons from the past and applied them to modern-day storytelling in a way that honors those who came before him.The Importance of Adapting to the Battlefield of MediaOne of Carr's unique insights in the podcast was how the modern publishing environment requires authors to adapt to new challenges, much like a battlefield. "You couldn't have done what I'm doing now back in 1985," he said, reflecting on how digital platforms, podcasts, and social media have revolutionized the way creators can engage with their audience. In Carr's early career, traditional book tours and limited media appearances were the main avenues for engaging with readers. Today, authors like Carr have an abundance of ways to connect with fans, express gratitude, and contribute value, whether through social media interactions or hosting podcasts. “You might just want to write the book, and that's wonderful. But for me, I need to build a readership,” Carr shared, explaining his motivation to create content beyond just writing novels. This approach is more than just business—it's personal. Carr, who has a middle child with severe special needs, shared that the financial responsibility of caring for his family drives his efforts to engage with his audience consistently. "For me, thanking people, being authentic, and adapting to this new environment is just as important as writing the books."From Page to ScreenA particularly exciting moment of the conversation came when Carr recounted the story of how his book The Terminal List was adapted into a major television series. As he was writing the book, Carr imagined Chris Pratt playing the lead role, even though Pratt was then known primarily for comedic work on *Parks and Recreation*. After Pratt's transformation in Zero Dark Thirty, Carr saw him as the perfect actor to embody the main character. It turns out that Carr's intuition was spot on. Through a fortunate series of connections—thanks to a friend, Jared Shaw—Pratt ended up...
We continue where we left off in episode 27 with our exploration of the 1976 British anthology series "Beasts," written by the legendary Nigel Kneale (who now has his own dedicated page on our website!), tonight we watch the first of two episodes "The Dummy." Directed by Don Leaver (not Cleaver), a veteran of many shows from our youth and boasts credits on two episodes of "Hammer House of Horror": "Witching Time" and "The Mark of Satan" Bernard Horsfal as Clyde Boydl: He appeared in classic TV series like the very first episode of "The Avengers" and a four "Doctor Who" serials: "The Mind Robber," "The War Games," "The Planet of the Daleks," and "The Deadly Assassin." Glyn Houston as Sidney Stewart: another "Doctor Who" alumnus, having featured in "The Hand of Fear" and "The Awakening." The fantastically named Thorley Walters as Sir Ramsey: bringing a wealth of genre experience to the table, playing the Burgermeister in "Vampire Circus, "Dr. Hertz in "Frankenstein Created Woman" and Inspector Frisch in "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed,". Notably, Michael Sheard as the Sergeant, who gained fame for his portrayal of the tyrannical schoolteacher Mr. Bronson in Grange Hill during the mid-1980s. He also developed a niche for playing Adolf Hitler, appearing in four films: "Rogue Male," "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," an uncredited role in "Hitler of the Andes." and in the TV series "The Tomorrow People." Sheard also made appearances in Doctor Who: "The Ark," "Mind of Evil," "Pyramid of Mars," "The Invisible Enemy," "Castrovalva," and "Remembrance of the Daleks. We also see Lillias Walker as Joan Eastgate - her obligatory Doctor Who appearance being "Terror of the Zygons", was married to Peter Vaughan, who starred in "Warning to the Curious." (episode 21) Patricia Haines as Sheila Boy - She also starred in "Virgin Witch" with first-time actor Vicky Michelle. Haines was married to Michael Caine with whom she had a daughter; sadly, this was her final screen role. And finally, of course, one of our most featured actors, Clive Swift (or as the Apple Podcasts AI transcript generator calls him, Kloof Swift). We've covered his career several times now, and I highly recommend Andrew Screens ‘Book of Beasts' blog for a fantastic, exhaustive biography. Joining us is soldier, lawyer, writer and literary agent Roger Field. This episode is more or less a book report about 'Rogue Male: Sabotage and seduction behind German lines with Geoffrey Gordon-Creed DSO, MC' which Roger wrote using the man's memoirs. Definitely one of the best books I've read so was a great pleasure to talk to Roger about it. Geoffrey Gordon-Creed joined the Army straight from school in 1939 and saw action in North Africa (he won the Military Cross on his first day in battle). From there on to Greece to scupper the Germans' plans as a member of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) which was the UK's early Special Forces . He was a top level operator on the battlefield AND in the bedroom - and in this book he does not spare the details. Roger is a natural storyteller and we also discuss his latest book 'Scimitar into Stanley' about his memoirs from the Falklands War. VHS Strikes Back E14 Dave and Chris are back reviewing the cult classic First Blood starring Sylvester Stallone. Originally a novel written by David Morrel. Morrell stated he was inspired to write the novel by hearing about the experiences of his students at the University of Iowa who had fought in Vietnam. The author also said "When I started First Blood back in 1968, I was deeply influenced by Geoffrey Household's Rogue Male." The character's name was derived in part from a brand of apples, which his wife brought home while he was struggling to think up a name for the character. In the DVD commentary for 'First Blood' Morell comments that one of the inspirations for Rambo was World War II hero Audie Murphy. Shortly after its publication in 1972, Morrell rights were sold to Columbia pictures, who in turn sold them to Warner Bros. This trend continued for ten years. The story passed through three companies and eighteen screenplays. Finally, it was sold to Andrew G. Vajna and Mario Kassar, who turned the character of Rambo into a more likable underdog who never killed anybody, instead of the angry, psychotic character in the book who goes on a bloody rampage and literally brings the Vietnam War to America. The role was offered to many celebrities like Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino until it reached Sylvester Stallone. The film was well-received by critics and saved Stallone's career. Plot Summary: John J. Rambo is a former United States Special Forces soldier who fought in Vietnam and won the Congressional Medal of Honor, but his time in Vietnam still haunts him. As he came to Hope, Washington to visit a friend, he was guided out of town by the Sheriff William Teasel who insults Rambo, but what Teasel does not know that his insult angered Rambo to the point where Rambo became violent and was arrested. As he was at the county jail being cleaned, he escapes and goes on a rampage through the forest to try to escape from the sheriffs who want to kill him. Then, as Rambo's commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman tries to save both the Sheriff's department and Rambo before the situation gets out of hand. Your "Burning" desire to hear a review of the new Lee Chang-Dong film can finally be satiated, as Rob, Graham and Tim take on the adaptation of a Haruki Murakami short story is our Film Of The Week. Capital O-Opinions will be had. Tim kicks off our Off the Shelf section with a new Netflix release - Tony Gilroy's arts-world horror "Velvet Buzzsaw" - which is basically a Vincent Price movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. Is it better? Worse? The same, but in a different way? After that it's time for Graham to take on BFI's re-issue of "Rogue Male" (starring Peter O'Toole), and then it's time for Rob to spends some time at the circus with Indicator's vintage slice of Joan Crawfordsploitation - "Berserk".
