His breakthrough moment came at the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam, where his authoritative drumming, initially credited simply as "Artimus Pyle, percussion," captured widespread attention. Further establishing himself as a sought-after session drummer, Pyle connected with acts such as Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band, eventually crossing paths with Ronnie Van Zant and Ed King at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. This fateful encounter paved the way for the creation of Saturday Night Special, leaving an indelible mark on Ronnie. Making his live debut at Jacksonville's Sgt Pepper's Club in October 1974, Pyle assumed the role of Skynyrd's drummer following the release of Second Helping, contributing to the band's subsequent four albums, including the legendary Street Survivors. Pyle survived the band's tragic 1977 plane crash that took six lives, including Steve and Cassie Gaines, along with the band's leader, Ronnie Van Zant."This project has been a year in the making, but when the fans hear it they will understand why it took so long," says Len Snow, Get Joe Records president. "Artimus is legendary within the Southern Rock space. The music that Lynyrd Skynyrd made will always live as a part of rock history. This album honors that music and gives Artimus a way to honor his former bandmates." He would replace their original drummer (Bob Burns) following the release of the group's second album, Second Helping, and performed with the band and on Skynyrd's subsequent four albums,Nuthin' Fancy, Gimme Back My Bullets, Street Survivors, and their live album, One More for the Road. Pyle was injured but survived the band's 1977 horrific plane crash that abruptly ended the lives of six people, including band members Steve and Cassie Gaines, and most notably, frontman and musical visionary Ronnie Van Zant.In 1979, the band began to reunite, first for the 5th Annual Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam, and eventually, as the Rossington Collins Band (which included all the remaining band members and Pyle, plus Dale Krantz on lead vocals and Barry Lee Harwood on guitar). However, shortly after that, Pyle was in a car accident that broke his leg in 21 places and shattered his hopes of remaining with the group. Pyle spent the next three years healing, both physically and emotionally, before returning to the States and establishing the Artimus Pyle Band (A.P.B.) to honor the music and legacy of Ronnie Van Zant.In 1987, Pyle rejoined his former bandmates to tour and eventually record as Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991, but the experience left him flat. While he deeply loved them, he no longer felt the magic he once did with Van Zant at the helm, nor was he interested in returning to the party lifestyle for which the band was known and stepped away from the group permanently, only to return in 2006 during Lynyrd Skynyrd's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (where he played alongside Bob Burns). Now in his 70s, Pyle still continues to honor Van Zant's musical legacy, recording and touring with the Artimus Pyle Band, now comprised of Pyle (drums), Scott Raines (guitar/vocals), Jerry Lyda (guitar) Brad Durden (keyboards/vocals), and Dave Fowler (bass).https://artimuspyleband.com/https://www.amazon.com/Anthems-Honoring-Music-Lynyrd-Skynyrd/dp/B0CKH9X2WHBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
Billy Crain was an important member of the Henry Paul Band from 1978 until 1982, collaborating on songwriting, and being the featured lead guitarist. In 2008 Crain would hook up again with Henry Paul, but this time in the reformed Outlaws. He has been a staple performer in the Southern rock scene since the early 1970s. He has performed with various artists including The Allman Brothers Band, The Rossington-Collins Band, The Rolling Stones and ZZ Top. In the late 1980s he pursued songwriting and record production. He co-wrote the song "Call It Love" (by Poco) with Ron Guilbeau and Rick Lonow; "It's My Time" by Martina McBride (co-writers Kim Tribble and Tammy Hyler); and Another Nine Minutes (co-writers Tim Buppert and Tom Douglas); and "Let 'er Rip" by the Dixie Chicks (co-written with Sandy Ramos).

Artimus Pyle was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd. His excellent, straight ahead, drumming can be found on 7 of the bands albums. In addition, Artimus has released a handful of solo albums with his Artimus Pyle Band. He was among the survivors of the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed the bands front man - Ronnie Van Zant and others. In Ray White's July of 2023 interview with Artimus, he talked about how he obtained his first name, his time with Skynyrd and his upcoming album. He wrote the documentary movie Steet Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash, that was released in 2020. In our showcase segment we pay tribute to Gary Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd's founding member and guitarist/songwriter, who passed away on March 5, 2023. He was the longest surviving original member of the band. Gary also led the Rossington - Collins Band who had a Top 20 Billboard album in 1980 titled Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, that garnered a Gold Record award. The icons of Southern Rock...we have them on The CAT!

Folks, it's time to party! With their second studio album, Wild Planet, Athens-based band, The B-52's continued their new wave, high energy weirdness. Front man Fred Schneider's frequently spoken vocals and Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's harmonies give The B-52's a very distinctive sound — the beehive hairdo sported by Kate and Cindy gave the band its name. There's not a bad song on the entire album. We hope you enjoy this week's very upbeat installment of What the Riff! Party Out of Bounds This track starts the album with a high energy party song. The B-52's are clearly identified with fun, and they never took themselves too seriously. Give Me Back My Man Cindy Wilson takes the lead vocals on this track, which was the second single released from the album. Private Idaho This is the hit track from the album, and a staple of the party circuit from high school dances to college bars. "Don't be blind to the big surprise - swimming round and round like the deadly hand of a radium clock." Strobe Light A more risque song was the third single released from the album. The B-52's would take a hiatus in 1985 when band mate Ricky Williams died, but then, they came back better than ever. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton-John No hit movie here, but Jeff Lynne of ELO partners with Newton-John on this hit song from 1980. STAFF PICKS: “In America” by the Charlie Daniels Band Bruce shares this hit from CDB's "Full Moon" album, which channels the anger that a lot of Americans had over the Iran hostage crisis. Daniels saw this point as a revitalization of American patriotism. **“Don't Misunderstand Me” by Rossington Collins Band ** Wayne brings some southern rock to us in his staff pick. The surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the tragic plane crash formed this band with a female lead (Dale Krantz). The band would stick around for two studio albums. “Misunderstanding” by Genesis This hit off the album “Duke” was written by Phil Collins, and was originally intended for Collins' solo album. Rob points out that if you listen, the song was clearly inspired by Toto's "Hold the Line" and The Beach Boys "Sail on Sailor." “Don't Ask Me Why” by Billy Joel Brian's staff pick is an all acoustic song from Billy Joel's album, “Glass Houses.” Joel would win his first Grammy for this album. "You are still a victim of the accidents you leave as sure as I'm a victim of desire." The piano solo consists of 15 overdubbed pianos! INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: “Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back Medley” by MECO We finish off with a disco-esque medley based on the popular Star Wars saga. Remember this age of album medleys?

Today's Guest: Billy Powell, keyboard player, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington-Collins Band, Allen Collins Band Order 'Lynyrd Skynyrd - Same Old Blues: Live In London 1975' from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD cover above! 1983 I remember the day I interviewed the Allen Collins Band. It was May 5, 1983, and it was memorable for many reasons. First, of course, was that I got to speak with Billy Powell, Randall Hall and Leon Wilkeson, former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, who had reformed, first as the Rossington-Collins Band, then as the Allen Collins Band. Second, the guys in the band were so disarmingly nice. And third, in interviewing the Allen Collins Band, I literally interviewed everyone in the band except their leader, Allen Collins. To this day, I’m not sure where Allen was, but the band’s manager fed me everyone else in the band in the hopes Allen would eventually show up. This was fun, but a little challenging; I was only prepared for Allen. It took a little imagination to think of questions for everyone; amazingly, the conversation went on for 70 minutes before we all acknowledged Allen wasn’t coming and we called it a day. And ultimately my editor decided not to publish a story about the Allen Collins Band without Allen Collins. I was reminded of all this when I heard about the passing of original Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell on January 28, 2009. As I understand it, Powell joined Skynyrd first as a roadie. One day, according to legend, singer Ronnie Van Zant heard Powell play “Freebird” on the piano and invited him to join the band as a player. Order '20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best Of The Rossington Collins Band' from Amazon.com by clicking on the CD cover above! In 1977, Powell was on the chartered plane that crashed and killed Van Zant, as well as Steve Gaines and injured the rest of the band, Powell included. Over the next decade, Powell played in two Skynyrd spinoffs, the Rossington-Collins Band and the Allen Collins Band. And when Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987, Powell was there. He continued playing with Skynyrd, behind Ronnie Von Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, until Powell’s death. I hope you’ll enjoy this never-before-heard Mr. Media “Lost Tapes” interview with the Allen Collins Band—including the late Billy Powell, recorded on May 5, 1983.
