Kate Pierson is a founding member of the B-52s: The World's Greatest Party Band, and a beacon for weirdos and queer-does since the late 70s. After decades of collaborating with the likes of Iggy Pop, R.E.M., and her Japanese side-band NiNa (more on that in the episode), Kate began writing and recording her entirely solo output in 2015. Last year, her second album Radios and Rainbows was released, and at the age of 77, Kate is bubbling with creativity and drive to continue creating. Between the B-52s' legendary back catalogue (which I've only really started discovering myself), Kate's solo work, and her reflections on her own queer legacy, there's a lot to get through in this conversation. At the start of the 90's, as a way of refreshing the way they worked, the members of R.E.M. all tried playing different instruments. They also brought in guest musicians and vocalists. And, for the first time, Michael Stipe tried writing a love song. The result was a hit song, and their first album to reach number 1 in the U.S., Canada, and around the world. Randy Renaud has the story behind Out of Time, released 34 years ago this week, on the Chronicles of Rock.

This week on The Metro, Rev Jeff Ivins brings you the following for your weekly time trip to the 1980s: Alarm, Robert Palmer, Oxo, Men At Work, Kate Pierson, George Michael, Ramones, Ultravox, Deborah Harry, Human Sexual Response, General Public, Dalbello, Marilyn Martin, and finishing off with Joy Division.
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer, JC Chasez, and Golden Globe winning songwriter, producer and composer Jimmy Harry announce their groundbreaking new musical theater concept album, Playing With Fire. Inspired by Mary Shelly's timeless novel Frankenstein, Playing with Fire marks Chasez's first major musical theater recording project. Chasez is also featured as a vocalist alongside singers Cardamon Rozzi and Lily Elise. The project comes on the heels of an exciting year for both Chasez and Harry respectively, following the highly anticipated *NSYNC reunion on the Trolls Band Together soundtrack where Chasez lent his vocals on the group's first song in two decades, "Better Place," and Harry's recent work writing and producing "Take Me Back To The Party," the latest single from B-52's founding member Kate Pierson. Harry has previously worked with legends such as Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears, Diplo, Kelly Clarkson, Weezer and more. Chasez made a surprise appearance at this year's Elsie Fest and joined festival host creator Darren Criss on stage where the project was announced.Featuring a collection of 16 original new tracks, Playing With Fire first came to fruition when Harry presented Chasez the script of his late mother's (Barbara Field) theatrical adaptation of Shelley's prescient sci-fi story. Chasez was immediately intrigued with the play, and work on it immediately began, creating a heartfelt story of timely technological issues, love, responsibility, revenge, loss, and the human condition. This reimagining of the classic tale constructs a conversation between Frankenstein and his creation, The Creature, at the grave of Frankenstein's wife, Elizabeth, ten years after her death. Through dynamic interplay of dialogue and shared flashbacks of key events in both their lives, the concept album plunges into the heart of their intertwined destinies. As they confront their past actions and the devastating impact they've had on one another, Frankenstein and The Creature gradually find understanding, sympathy, and forgiveness. Chasez and Harry were drawn not only to the thought-provoking technological themes in Shelly's novel, but also to the emotional depth that Field's adaptation brought to the story. It was as if they discovered an untapped perspective on a literary classic that they could illustrate with music. This gripping story is accompanied by dark brooding songs that blend Electronic pop juxtaposed against classical music from the romantic era, forming a captivating symphony of contrasts that reflect the characters own internal conflicts. "When we first discussed creating a musical inspired by Frankenstein, obvious topics such as technology, A.G.I., monsters, immortality and death came up. However, when we began the process of writing the songs, we couldn't help but lean into topics dealing with familial relationships, love, deceit, and denial. In the end, we flipped the technological beast on its side to reveal that, in spite of all its benefits and horrors it creates, it changes nothing about our basic humanity." My guest this week is Fred Schneider, singer-songwriter and frontman of one of the most influential and successful groups of all-time. The B-52's The original lineup consisted of Fred on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals. Keyboards and synth-bass. Cindy Wilson on vocals and percussion. Ricky Wilson on guitar and Keith Strickland, who started out as the drummer, but switched to lead guitar following the death of Ricky Wilson in 1985. The B-52'S have enjoyed many hits including, ‘Rock Lobster', ‘Planet Clare', ‘Private Idaho', 'Roam' and ‘Love Shack', which topped the charts in 1989 and became a staple of weddings and parties ever since. Over the years, the group has had three Grammy nominations, and despite being innovators of the new wave genre, have never been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is crazy when you consider just how influential and important they are. The band are currently taking a break from their run farewell show, but are returning to Las Vegas in November for a residency at the Venetian Theatre. These shows will be very special
Because all of us presenters live in Georgia it is hard for us to believe that Cosmic Thing, the fifth studio album from The B-52's was the international breakthrough album. We had been listening to “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” for about a decade before this album came out. But much of the B-52's discography was confined to college radio stations outside of their home state. Cosmic Thing would really put the group on the map nationally and internationally. This album was also a comeback for the group. The original group consisted of Fred Schneider on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals and keyboard, Cindy Wilson on vocals and tambourine, Ricky Wilson on guitars, and Keith Strickland on percussion. Ricky Wilson died of AIDS in October 1985, and hadn't told the band other than Keith Strickland that he had the then-terminal disease because he didn't want anyone worrying or fussing over him. His death devastated the group, particularly his sister, Cindy Wilson. The band did not tour to promote their 1985 album release “Bouncing off the Satellites,” nor did they put out any new music until 1989.When they got back together they decided to remain a foursome. Keith Strickland moved to guitar and they brought in session drummers to fill in. It took about a year to compose the songs from this album, with the group spending a lot of time working through their grief in the loss of Ricky Wilson. The resulting album, however, was a tremendous success, with two songs breaking into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the first songs of the group to do so.Bruce brings us this comeback album in this week's podcast. Love ShackThis has become the B-52's signature song. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the group's first top 40 hit. The inspiration for this song was partly an African American club outside Athens, Georgia, called the “Hawaiian Ha-Le.” It was a place that looked like a shack from the outside, but hosted a great selection of bands.Cosmic ThingThe title track and lead-off song to the album preceded the album by a few months. It was released on the soundtrack to the film “Earth Girls Are Easy.” It is also known as “(Shake That) Cosmic Thing.”Channel ZA deeper cut , this track has a little more political feel. It discusses the changes happening in the world, along with pollution, radiation, and other concerns. “Space junk, laser bombs, ozone holes, better put up my umbrella!” The band never lost their dance connection, with songs leaning more towards party and less towards politics.RoamThe second big hit leads off side 2, and also went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson duet on this song, making it the only vocal track on the album in which Fred Schneider doesn't have a vocal. It was the second and final US top-10 hit for the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr. (from the motion picture “When Harry Met Sally”)Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this romantic comedy, with Harry Connick, Jr. providing most of the soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:I'll Be You by the ReplacementsWayne features a Minnesota band which got their start in the punk genre before moving to alternative rock. This song plays in the bachelor party in the 1996 comedy “Jerry Maguire.” The replacements formed in 1979, and it would be 10 years before this song would be their sole entry into the top 100, peaking at number 51.Free Fallin' by Tom PettyLynch's staff pick is a big hit off Petty's solo album “Full Moon Fever.” This song documents the feelings that a guy has after breaking up with his girl. Petty has ELO founder and fellow Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne joining him on this single, providing synthesizer, bass, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals.Lay Your Hands On Me by Bon JoviRob brings us an epic rock song from Jon Bon Jovi off the album “New Jersey.” This one hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth single from the album to break into the top 10 on the pop charts. Dolly Parton covered this single in 2014, rearranged as a gospel song.If Dirt Were Dollars by Don HenleyBruce closes out the staff picks with a deeper cut off Henley's massive album “End of the Innocence.” Never one to shy away from politics and culture, Henley rails in this track against materialism, hypocrisy, false patriotism, and hubris. “These days the buck stops nowhere, no one takes the blame. But evil is still evil in anybody's name.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr.We double dip on the Entertainment track to end this week's podcast, as Connick did a vocal and instrumental version of this classic song. "Ali Smith's The Ballad of Speedball Baby is a sometimes-harrowing ride poetically described in neon prose. Ali takes me to places I've been myself as a fellow 'woman of the road' and rocked and rolled. She brings it all back home so vividly with humor, originality, and love-and 'oh-yeah-that-happened-to-me-too' truthfulness. Rimmed with heavy black eyeliner and smelling faintly of cheap booze, The Ballad of Speedball Baby is a pulse-quickening, unpredictable ride through the '90s music scene-alternately terrifying, hilarious, and painfully evocative-as well as a love letter to the power of female solidarity

She's often the only girl in a broken-down tour van, being strip-searched at the Croatian border, chased by lunatics, and navigating the seedy underbelly of a male-dominated music scene full of addiction, violence, and misogyny-all while keeping her sharp wit and dark humor intact.

We're learning a lot both in the pop culture topics as covered in the June 1990 Sassy, and ALSO in our further research about them. A Parenthood TV show? The couple I Love You To Death was based on? Who Rachel Hunter would end up with after Kip Winger? How many more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies would follow the 1990 début? There's just so much to know! We also touch on Kate Pierson, Spanky Taylor, and Natalie Maines's future ex-husband. Put Bad Influence on pause, but definitely come back to it AFTER you listen to our latest episode! QUICK LINKS
B-52's Kate Pierson says it best: “It seems that Halloween is everyone's favorite holiday, yet there are only a handful of Halloween songs!” Ain't that the truth.. Pierson is correcting this *ahem* grave mistake with what she describes as, “a VERY spirited song written by me and with the supernatural artist Sia and the soulful producer Sam Dixon.” “Every Day Is Halloween” is a haunting tune about a woman who is dying to be seen proving that ghouls just wanna have fun. Check out Sia on MBE in 2007 and B-52's make their debut on MBE in 2008.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by Tom Gustafson & Cory Krueckeberg, the men behind the new gay movie-musical, Glitter and Doom. Tom directs, Cory writes and edits and they produce together. The film is a loosely autobiographical love story between two young men, a broody down-on-his luck musician named Doom (Alan Cammish) and a sunny aspiring circus performer named Glitter (Alex Diaz) In the interview, Cory recalls how he wrote the script on his own and then presented it to Tom on their 20th anniversary as a couple. Tom talks about the decision to shoot in Mexico City and recalls the international casting process, the duo's commitment to casting two openly queer leads and reveals that there were a few straight actors who claimed to be gay in the hopes it would get them cast. The pair also describe their interactions with the Indigo Girls who lent 25 songs to the film and also appear in it. Other topics include: shooting a sex scene in a tent, casting bad-ass women like Tig Notaro, Missi Pyle and Kate Pierson from the B-52s in supporting roles and the time a festival rejected the movie because the programmer felt that it "appropriated lesbian culture."

“The Songs Between The Docks and the Roads” Over the course of his career, the east London-born singer/songwriter Graham Parker has put out close to thirty albums and they're all great. All of them—Whether its Howlin' Wind or Squeezing out Sparks or Another Grey Area or Deepcut To Nowhere or Cloud Symbols, every single GP album is a winner. Parker grew up a huge fan of the Beatles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and ska and reggae music and you can hear those influences coursing through his songbook. His compositions swing and shake and sway and groove with some of the most infectious pop hooks you'll ever hear. Parker's early life could be a series of novels—he hung out in the Channel Islands and Paris, hitchhiked thourhg Spain and Morocco and worked on the docks in Gibraltar. And you and I both know, there are stories in between those docks and roads and islands. Graham Parker has lived a life. And his life in music is equally as staggering as his adventures. With his band the Rumor he was produced by Nick Lowe, opened for Dylan, played on Top Of The Pops, had Top 40 hits and albums, toured Australia, been on labels as varied as RCA, Arista and Bloodshot and collaborated with folks like Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom, The Smithereens and Kate Pierson of the B-52s. And he's stilt at it. His two new singles (“Humans Are The Mutant Virus” and '3-D Printer”) are all the proof you need that Parker is still at the top of his game. He's practically peerless. It's Breaking Form Game Day with Diane Seuss! Buy Di's books at your favorite independent bookstore. We recommend Loyalty Bookstores, a Black-owned indie in DC.Apparently, the word "jockstrap" comes from the riders of early bicycles (called penny farthings, which had a huge front wheel and a smaller rear wheel).
