Cindy Wilson returns to the podcast to discuss this amazing episode Check out Cindy’s newest book, We Suffered Much: Charles Wood Irish and the Dakota Territory Railroad Survey of 1879-1881 https://www.amazon.com/We-Suffered-Much-Territory-1879-1881-ebook/dp/B0D3S7ZTMH Episode: The Empire Builders (Season 9, Episode 9) Air Date: November 22, 1982 Writer: John T. Dugan Director: Joseph Pevney IMDb Rating: 7.5/10 In The Empire Builders, Walnut Grove buzzes with excitement over a new railroad depot, promising jobs and growth. However, the Minneapolis and Western Railroad, led by Spencer Hollingsworth, plans to seize farmers' lands, including Almanzo Wilder's and John Carter's, via eminent domain. Initial enthusiasm sours as the town realizes the cost: evictions and a rowdy railroad camp complete with a saloon. Almanzo and Carter, backed by Isaiah Edwards, resist, facing threats from railroad enforcer Wilkins. Laura rallies the women to join the men in a standoff at Carter's farm, while surveyor Hobson proposes rerouting the tracks through Tracy. The community's united front forces Hollingsworth to relent, sparing Walnut Grove. The episode, a blend of drama and defiance, showcases the power of collective resistance against corporate overreach, with Laura's fiery leadership and Carter's final triumph underscoring the town's love for their land. Some Quotes I Chose “Money won't buy happiness, but you can look for it in fancier places.” “Property is property. What we own is what we work and sweat for.” “What we own is a part of us.” “This land… It's part of us now.” “I'm a lot tougher than you think, Mr. Wilder.” “This is our land, and we fight for it together.” The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. His ‘80s band Was (Not Was) scored a top 10 hit, “Walk the Dinosaur,” but Don Was has had an even greater impact on the music world as a producer. In 1989 he produced two big comebacks: Bonnie Raitt's Grammy-winning Nick of Time and “Love Shack” and other songs on the B-52's Cosmic Thing. Then came work with Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Willie Nelson and—in a long, fruitful collaboration—the Rolling Stones. He's got amazing stories detailing his Stones job interview and the origin of Cindy Wilson's cry of “Tin roof! Rusted.” He also relates how he helps artists get to the essence of what they do best. Then there's his own return to performing in Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble and how playing live helps him as a producer and as president of Blue Note Records (the subject of next week's episode).

The B-52's suffered a major tragedy with the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson and, though they managed to get 1986's Bouncing Off the Satellites put together and released, it appeared that may be their final album. In 1989, however, they came back in a big way with Cosmic Thing and the hit "Love Shack". Cindy Wilson left to focus on her family in 1990 and, tired, with one member down and under pressure to replicate the success of "Love Shack", the B-52's went into the studio and recorded 1991's Good Stuff.
The original VJ Alan Hunter remembers his first night on MTV; B-52's Cindy Wilson doesn't remember hers; Rick Springfield also doesn't remember his MTV debut; Nobody should listen to Trump's idea of race science
My guest this week is Fred Schneider, singer-songwriter and frontman of one of the most influential and successful groups of all-time. The B-52's The original lineup consisted of Fred on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals. Keyboards and synth-bass. Cindy Wilson on vocals and percussion. Ricky Wilson on guitar and Keith Strickland, who started out as the drummer, but switched to lead guitar following the death of Ricky Wilson in 1985. The B-52'S have enjoyed many hits including, ‘Rock Lobster', ‘Planet Clare', ‘Private Idaho', 'Roam' and ‘Love Shack', which topped the charts in 1989 and became a staple of weddings and parties ever since. Over the years, the group has had three Grammy nominations, and despite being innovators of the new wave genre, have never been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is crazy when you consider just how influential and important they are. The band are currently taking a break from their run farewell show, but are returning to Las Vegas in November for a residency at the Venetian Theatre. These shows will be very special

Because all of us presenters live in Georgia it is hard for us to believe that Cosmic Thing, the fifth studio album from The B-52's was the international breakthrough album. We had been listening to “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” for about a decade before this album came out. But much of the B-52's discography was confined to college radio stations outside of their home state. Cosmic Thing would really put the group on the map nationally and internationally. This album was also a comeback for the group. The original group consisted of Fred Schneider on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals and keyboard, Cindy Wilson on vocals and tambourine, Ricky Wilson on guitars, and Keith Strickland on percussion. Ricky Wilson died of AIDS in October 1985, and hadn't told the band other than Keith Strickland that he had the then-terminal disease because he didn't want anyone worrying or fussing over him. His death devastated the group, particularly his sister, Cindy Wilson. The band did not tour to promote their 1985 album release “Bouncing off the Satellites,” nor did they put out any new music until 1989.When they got back together they decided to remain a foursome. Keith Strickland moved to guitar and they brought in session drummers to fill in. It took about a year to compose the songs from this album, with the group spending a lot of time working through their grief in the loss of Ricky Wilson. The resulting album, however, was a tremendous success, with two songs breaking into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the first songs of the group to do so.Bruce brings us this comeback album in this week's podcast. Love ShackThis has become the B-52's signature song. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the group's first top 40 hit. The inspiration for this song was partly an African American club outside Athens, Georgia, called the “Hawaiian Ha-Le.” It was a place that looked like a shack from the outside, but hosted a great selection of bands.Cosmic ThingThe title track and lead-off song to the album preceded the album by a few months. It was released on the soundtrack to the film “Earth Girls Are Easy.” It is also known as “(Shake That) Cosmic Thing.”Channel ZA deeper cut , this track has a little more political feel. It discusses the changes happening in the world, along with pollution, radiation, and other concerns. “Space junk, laser bombs, ozone holes, better put up my umbrella!” The band never lost their dance connection, with songs leaning more towards party and less towards politics.RoamThe second big hit leads off side 2, and also went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson duet on this song, making it the only vocal track on the album in which Fred Schneider doesn't have a vocal. It was the second and final US top-10 hit for the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr. (from the motion picture “When Harry Met Sally”)Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this romantic comedy, with Harry Connick, Jr. providing most of the soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:I'll Be You by the ReplacementsWayne features a Minnesota band which got their start in the punk genre before moving to alternative rock. This song plays in the bachelor party in the 1996 comedy “Jerry Maguire.” The replacements formed in 1979, and it would be 10 years before this song would be their sole entry into the top 100, peaking at number 51.Free Fallin' by Tom PettyLynch's staff pick is a big hit off Petty's solo album “Full Moon Fever.” This song documents the feelings that a guy has after breaking up with his girl. Petty has ELO founder and fellow Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne joining him on this single, providing synthesizer, bass, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals.Lay Your Hands On Me by Bon JoviRob brings us an epic rock song from Jon Bon Jovi off the album “New Jersey.” This one hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth single from the album to break into the top 10 on the pop charts. Dolly Parton covered this single in 2014, rearranged as a gospel song.If Dirt Were Dollars by Don HenleyBruce closes out the staff picks with a deeper cut off Henley's massive album “End of the Innocence.” Never one to shy away from politics and culture, Henley rails in this track against materialism, hypocrisy, false patriotism, and hubris. “These days the buck stops nowhere, no one takes the blame. But evil is still evil in anybody's name.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr.We double dip on the Entertainment track to end this week's podcast, as Connick did a vocal and instrumental version of this classic song. My friend Kelly Pelzel and I took an quick trip up to Walnut Grove to see the new pageant in July. After 45 years they have changed their pageant. They are taking the story and dividing it into three parts. The first one will have the most of the original pageant so they started with what will be the second of the trilogy. It's called Chasing the Dream, 1875-1876. We also took a little time to hit some of the other places in town. This was Kelly's first trip to Walnut Grove. It wasn't a complete trip, but we saw a lot including getting in a good visit with William T. Anderson and Cindy Wilson.

The More Sibyl Podcast Presents:아시아 남부 벨| The One with Cindy Wilson - An Asian-Southern Belle With Too Much Soul: Episode 6 (2021) In a society that continually tries to box people only to be one thing based on race, religion, culture, and other social constructs, only those with “Too Much Soul,” like our guest, are audacious enough to stand out. Shout out to Skycedi's YouTube channel where I found her!Cindy Wilson is from Jackson, MS, where she graduated with her Bachelor's in Psychology & Master's in Counseling from Jackson State University and received her MBA from Belhaven College. She currently resides in Atlanta, GA as an Author, International Speaker, and Social Impact Strategist. Cindy wrote “Too Much Soul” to share her unique story about being adopted by an African American family from Seoul, Korea, and growing up in Jackson, MS. She hopes that her story will start conversations around race and culture and empower others to find the freedom to be their authentic selves. In this episode, we explore Cindy's childhood and early years as a trans-racial adoptee (raised in a Black household), her unique cultural identity, and major highlights from her book. We also went political by taking a critical look into the marginalization of Asian-Americans and the recent hate-inspired attacks on them in the US. We examined ways of achieving inclusivity and the role of other ethnic minority groups like Blacks in building support for Asian-Americans.This is a truly power-packed episode that you certainly don't want to miss. And yes, I gushed about Korea (what did you expect, teehee!) PS: S/O to families like Cindy's who opened their hearts and home to a child. Here's hoping more Black families get more involved in adoption.

This episode we interview Mystic Bowie of Talking Dreads and talk about surviving 2020, his favorite strain, new music and funny tour stories.Well-schooled in the world of reggae and other Caribbean musical genres, it would be a performance in 1991 that opened a new path for him, a collaboration that would shape his future in more ways than one. Scheduled to perform on the Mardi Gras Fest bill at Tramps (NYC), Mystic had the opportunity to perform with the founding members of the Tom Tom Club as his backing band. Thanks to his performance with Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (Talking Heads), it evolved into a partnership that has lasted to this day. Mystic has worked steadily with the Tom Tom Club since 1992. With the release of their album, "The Good, The Bad and The Funky" (2000), featuring his vocals on the dub-heavy tracks "Time to Bounce"and a remake of Lee Perry's "Soul Fire", Mystic Bowie emerged as a force in his own right as their lead singer. Touring worldwide with the Tom Tom Club since 2000, Mystic's performances have been praised for his seemingly ceaseless supply of energy and the excitement he generates with crowds everywhere. The irresistible vibe of this tour, and Mystic's performances, has been captured magically on the Tom Tom Club's "Live at the Clubhouse" CD (2002). Songs from this period also appear on the Tom Tom Club's DVDs, "Time to Bounce" and "In a Bootleg Style. Mystic also performs solo where he lives in Connecticut, using portions of his proceeds to fund the project he started in Jamaica to bring music to the children through building a youth center to give them somewhere to go where they will learn music and have a place to go where they can keep out of trouble. He has performed at many SONO ArtsFests in Norwalk, CT as the headliner. His energetic vivacious style together with his easy approachability make him a favourite with area fans, Talking Dreads is the brainchild of Head Dread, Mystic Bowie, a Jamaican artist whose long and close relationship with Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth, founding members of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, began when he joined the latter group as a singer in 1996. He then recorded and performed with Tom Tom Club for nearly twenty years and continues to bear fruit from their unending collaborations. This inaugural effort from Talking Dreads features an amazing lineup of stellar reggae stalwarts including Freddie McGregor (‘Rastaman Camp', Bobby Babylon), ska-guitar master Ernest Ranglin (session player and arranger of Millie's smash ‘My Boy Lollipop', the Melodians ‘Rivers Of Babylon', and countless other tracks), and Tarrus Reilly ('Start Anew', ‘Good Girl Gone Bad') as well as a little help from punk-pop diva Cindy Wilson of the B-52's (‘Rock Lobster', ‘Love Shack'). Talking Heads' music was a formative influence on Mystic Bowie since childhood. For more info

Korean adoptee and self-described "southern belle" Cindy Wilson, 43, shares a fascinating story of her life growing up in the Deep South, adopted transracially by African-Americans and navigating identity, belonging and being true to herself.
Folks, it's time to party! With their second studio album, Wild Planet, Athens-based band, The B-52's continued their new wave, high energy weirdness. Front man Fred Schneider's frequently spoken vocals and Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's harmonies give The B-52's a very distinctive sound — the beehive hairdo sported by Kate and Cindy gave the band its name. There's not a bad song on the entire album. We hope you enjoy this week's very upbeat installment of What the Riff! Party Out of Bounds This track starts the album with a high energy party song. The B-52's are clearly identified with fun, and they never took themselves too seriously. Give Me Back My Man Cindy Wilson takes the lead vocals on this track, which was the second single released from the album. Private Idaho This is the hit track from the album, and a staple of the party circuit from high school dances to college bars. "Don't be blind to the big surprise - swimming round and round like the deadly hand of a radium clock." Strobe Light A more risque song was the third single released from the album. The B-52's would take a hiatus in 1985 when band mate Ricky Williams died, but then, they came back better than ever. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "Xanadu" by Olivia Newton-John No hit movie here, but Jeff Lynne of ELO partners with Newton-John on this hit song from 1980. STAFF PICKS: “In America” by the Charlie Daniels Band Bruce shares this hit from CDB's "Full Moon" album, which channels the anger that a lot of Americans had over the Iran hostage crisis. Daniels saw this point as a revitalization of American patriotism. **“Don't Misunderstand Me” by Rossington Collins Band ** Wayne brings some southern rock to us in his staff pick. The surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the tragic plane crash formed this band with a female lead (Dale Krantz). The band would stick around for two studio albums. “Misunderstanding” by Genesis This hit off the album “Duke” was written by Phil Collins, and was originally intended for Collins' solo album. Rob points out that if you listen, the song was clearly inspired by Toto's "Hold the Line" and The Beach Boys "Sail on Sailor." “Don't Ask Me Why” by Billy Joel Brian's staff pick is an all acoustic song from Billy Joel's album, “Glass Houses.” Joel would win his first Grammy for this album. "You are still a victim of the accidents you leave as sure as I'm a victim of desire." The piano solo consists of 15 overdubbed pianos! INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: “Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back Medley” by MECO We finish off with a disco-esque medley based on the popular Star Wars saga. Remember this age of album medleys?

In “The POTSie,” Tom talks about the big exercise-related milestone he recently achieved, how motivating the Apple Watch is and how looks can be deceiving when it comes to POTS syndrome.
