The last time Genesis keyboard player extraordinaire Tony Banks came on the show was a few years ago, and we discussed a box set of his solo albums. Since then there has been a final Genesis tour, “The Last Domino?”, which I got to see the opening and closing nights of, and Tony now has a new boxset compiling his three classical albums “7”, “6”, and “5”. The first half of the interview we take a deep dive into that process which I hope you'll find interesting. Creating classical music isn't something we've really explored on the podcast before. In the second half of the interview Tony shares details of an upcoming boxset of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, and he also confirms details of a reissue of their 60's debut album “From Genesis To Revelation”, which in the past has been ignored from official Genesis reissue campaigns. We talk about how he feels he is perceived by Genesis fans, and whether he's tempted to emulate the very successful touring approach of former Genesis bandmate Steve Hackett, who incidentally he also clarifies his feeling about during our chat. I think this conversation is quite something. Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcastX: @signalspodcast

Guy Edward Fletcher (born 24 May 1960) is an English musician, best known for his position as one of the two keyboard players in the rock band Dire Straits[1] from 1984 until the group's dissolution, and his subsequent work with Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler for his many solo releases. Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018.[2] Biography Guy Edward Fletcher was born into a musical family and is the namesake of his uncle, Guy Fletcher, who wrote several hit songs for other artists with composing partner Doug Flett.[3] His mother Barbara was a session singer; his father Ted Fletcher, an audio designer, created a line of audio equipment named after Joe Meek with whom he had worked.[4] Fletcher is also the cousin of children's television presenter Justin Fletcher.[3] Whilst learning a trade as an audio engineer at DJM Studios in London at the age of 15, Fletcher also had a succession of his own bands and learned to play keyboards, guitars, and a variety of stringed instruments. He joined and toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in 1979 and in 1981, and with Roxy Music for their Avalon world tour during 1982 and 1983. In 1983, Fletcher was recruited by Dire Straits' lead guitarist Mark Knopfler to work on the music for the films Cal and Comfort and Joy. He joined Dire Straits as a full time member in 1984, his first album with them being their most successful, 1985's Brothers in Arms, which put the band in a global spotlight, and remained with the band until their 1995 disbanding. In 1986, Fletcher co-produced Belouis Some's album Belouis Some with Gary Langan.[5] In 1996, Fletcher toured as part of Bryan Ferry's band on his Mamouna world tour. Fletcher performing in 2005 Following the disbanding of Dire Straits, Fletcher continued his association with band founder Mark Knopfler as a core member of his band after launching his solo career. In 2005, Fletcher completed a world tour promoting Knopfler's 2004 solo album, Shangri-La, and in 2006 rounded off the duets tour with Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. Fletcher co-produced and played keyboards on his Knopfler's album, Get Lucky, and was again part of his subsequent world tour in 2010.

There is no point trying to be modest, or indeed beating about the bush, because Chapter 89 is a whopper. In the past (it is fair to say) that we have produced some reasonably entertaining chapters, and also some relatively in-depth episodes. But 89 may well be the first time we have come close to marrying the two together (and there will be more on that later). So, and in no particular order you are about to enjoy; 1. A couple of band-on-the-road-trips, one in Sweden and one in Germany. 2. The balance of the questions received from Patrons for use in the Oxford Livestream broadcast (including a belter from Sarah Golding-Keane about my footwear). 3. A small update about my smalls. 4. A call to action with regard to The Release 5. The definitive guide to Tupperware. You see what I mean. Whopper. Neal Francis was just ramping up on the road to promote his critically acclaimed debut album Changes when 2020 pulled the brakes. In a year that would have found the funky, New Orleans-inspired keyboardist/singer-songwriter on stage in Europe and Japan, he instead holed up in his beloved hometown of Chicago, taking the opportunity to teach himself reel-to-reel to recording while completing his yet-to-be-released sophomore album on Otari 8-track. A lover of analog and retro, Francis takes us back in time to his childhood music roots, where he was messing around on the piano by age 2 and soon devouring his father’s eclectic record collection and wearing out a compilation cassette of soul music. He reveals the film that gave him the rock ’n’ roll bug at age 7, the cover you least expect him to play today and his optimistic approach to life’s many curveballs.

Julian began his life surrounded by music with his siblings, and was sent away to music courses by his parents, where he developed a real need to make music and share it with others. Between his classical training at King's College Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music in London, he explored the world of historical performance at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, where he swiftly learnt Swiss German, how to improvise on the organ, and much more. Soon after his studies, on a course with Mary King and Rufus Norris at English National Opera, Julian discovered some unusual tips and tricks he would later apply in his work with singers. Julian now plays harpsichord at the highest level, coaches, and conducts – including his recent acclaimed recordings of John Eccles' Semele with the Academy of Ancient Music and Cambridge Handel Opera Company, and the world premiere recording of Stephen Dodgson's Margaret Catchpole: Two Worlds Apart for Naxos, and is also the Artistic Director of Cambridge Handel Opera Company. You can read more about Julian on his website here , and find out more about Cambridge Handel Opera Company here. Originally from Calgary, Alberta Canada, keyboardist Dave Cohen has spent the past 13 years in Nashville, garnering accolades that most musicians could only hope to achieve. Cohen first got his start touring with stand-out Canadian acts such as Johnny Reid and Amanda Marshall. After moving to the states and hitting the road to play for country icon Joe Nichols and hit-makers like Big & Rich and Wynonna, Cohen stepped away from touring in 2013 to focus on fine-tuning his talent strictly as a studio musician.Cohen has since played on countless No. 1 hits by country music’s biggest stars including Rascal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line, Brett Eldredge, Keith Urban, Chris Young, Cole Swindell, Jon Pardi, Lauren Alaina, Lindsay Ell, Kip Moore, Old Dominion, Josh Turner, Randy Houser, Chris Lane and more. A culmination of his hard work throughout the last decade, Cohen was named the Academy of Country Music’s 2017 Keyboard Player of the Year. Most recently he won the 2018 Music Row All Star Musician Award.http://www.davecohenlive.comhttps://www.instagram.com/daverosscohenSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9JCBNUCRNRVKY&source=url)
I’ve known Jason Miles for over 20 years and I learn new things from him every time we talk. Jason is a keyboard player, synthesizer programmer from the earliest days of the Moog synthesizer, and a Grammy-winning producer. He has worked with artists such as Miles, Davis, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Sting, Chaka Chan, Suzy Boggess, David Sanborn, and many others. In this interview, Jason talks about how he got started playing music and how that lead into his pioneering work with creative synthesizer programming, and playing on many albums. He has performed along with many major artists in places like Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Capetown South Africa Jazz Festival. He has a new record out, the proceeds of which will help support people in the music business who have limited income during the Covid pandemic. Jason also has a one-man music and storytelling show.Listen to Jason tell the stories about how he broke into the highest levels of the record business, and how he re-invented himself through the decades. He is always learning and embracing new music and new technology. It’s a fascinating story.http://www.jasonmilesmusic.com/Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate them. Controlling your keyboard player might seem like an easy thing, but it's often harder than you might expect. Generally, its not a question of volume when it comes to keyboard players, unlike drummers for example, because they have a volume knob and can be turned down.Your Keyboard Player Can Add Unbelievable Atmosphere! The main challenge with a keyboard player is what they play. If they are primarily piano, then you need one thing from them, but if they are keys, then you need them to play in a specific way.The prize is that, if you can control your keyboard player, you can create a wonderful, anointed and amazingly awesome atmosphere. So settle back, especially if you are in lockdown (like I am right now), because COVID 19 can't stop you getting the best from your keyboard player and indeed your entire worship team...
Accomplished musician and small business owner Lachy Doley is a world-leading expert on the Hammond Organ. He's also Jimmy Barnes's keyboard player and he played for Powderfinger back in the day. He's no slouch! In this very honest and open interview he shares how he makes a living from one of the world's toughest industries. A little bit more about Lachy Doley … Righto, so a few years ago, this fellow by the name of Lachy Doley sent me an email (out of the blue) saying he listened to my show when touring, and that he loved it so much that he'd gone ahead and wrote, sang and recorded a new intro and music bed for me. I took a listen, loved it, and have been using it ever since. I then rang to thank him and offer to get him some work. He politely replied that he was busy enough as he was Jimmy Barnes's keyboard player. For oversea's listeners, I'll explain who Jimmy Barnes is during the interview, suffice to say he's no slouch … and neither is Lachy. In fact, he's one of the world's leading Hammond Organ aficionados. “My ultimate goal is to win people over so that they'll have enough of a connection to you the person or artists that they'll want to buy your music, merch, tickets to gigs … as soon as you put out anything they just want to get it. That's what I'm always aiming for.” - Lachy Doley So why am I interviewing a well-established musician on this show? And why are they even listening to a show like this? Because Lachy is a small business owner just like you ... and whilst he's played with some of Australia's biggest bands including Barnsey and Powderfinger … he also has his own band and he constantly has to hustle for live gigs, to sell more CDs, merch … put simply, he too has to make a living. Now this is a very honest chat in which we cover: How he built his profile How he manages to bring his A-game to every gig Why he sent a heart-felt email to his listeners and what impact it had Plus he talks about the multitude of revenue streams he's created in order to make a living As a wannabe rockstar myself, I started off by asking Lachy to indulge me by explaining what it's like to walk out on stage to tens of thousands of screaming fans … Here's what caught my attention from my chat with Lachy Doley: I loved Lachy's honesty and transparency. When was the last time you let your guard down in front of a customer, employee or supplier? Would you even dare? I love the fact that Lachy has multiple revenue streams including an e-Course, (print on-demand merch). I've linked to both in the show notes. And I love the fact that he's segmenting his email list when people sign up. What was your main take-away from this chat? “I was so inspired by Powderfinger and their work ethic … they were a huge democracy. They were always doing meetings, they were just on to it all the time.” - Lachy Doley Here's that email Lachy sent back in 2017 THE TRUTH ABOUT MY CAREER, FAMILY AND THE RELEASE OF MY NEW ALBUM #LOVELIGHT I'm not gonna lie. I'm still doing it tough at the moment with all the shit that went down last year regarding the cancelled 6 week Europe tour with Glenn. So more than just letting you guys know that the preorders are open for the new album, I wanted to ask you all a few questions and tell you bit about what's going on here. Firstly I gotta thank all you guys once again for being such a great support to me, my music and ultimately my family. I started recording and performing as the Lachy Doley Group in 2010 and apart from Jimmy Barnes I haven't really done any work as a session player with anyone else since. Playing with Jimmy Barnes has pretty much gotten me through these years. The Lachy Doley Group has only cost me money. like lots of money! And that's not even mentioning the time I spend working on it. I mean I've been working my fucking ass off, every spare second I've had for the last 6 years to get it to where it's at and it's talking it's toll on my family, myself and my mental health. I mean I: Write the music (time) Perform the music (time) Record the music (time and heaps of money) Mix the music (time) Master the music (time) Then I market the album (stupid amounts of time and money) I also pay a publicist to market the album (I can't say exactly the amount, but it's thousands) I send the albums off to radio, blogs and magazines around the world (stupid amounts of time and money, especially overseas radio stations, everyone wants a physical copy and postage is nuts) This album makes 4 Studios albums and 2 Live albums plus a DVD since 2010 (WTF?) I book all the shows , except overseas (so much time) I promote the shows (stupid amounts of time and money) I video a lot of the shows (so much money and setup) I edit the videos of the shows (so much time) I promote them on Facebook (So much time and money) I built and update my website (Lots of time, some money for hosting) I design all the artwork and posters (time) I tour manager everything. Which I'm absolutely hopeless at. (time) Public Liability Insurance (money) My Europe tour of 2015 ended up costing me $6000 dollars. Having said that. My Europe 2016 tour broke even. So that was good :-) I ENGAGE WITH ALMOST EVERYONE WHO CONTACTS ME on fb, email, twitter and alike. But now I've got over 28,000 Facebook likes, this adds up to ten's of hours a week just replying to people but unfortunately doesn't do anything for my hopeless financial situation. I give out so much advice to musicians via comments and private messages it's bordering on crazy. But I have to say I really do love this part of everything. It's just so many hours. On top of this I haul around a stupidly OVERSIZED HAMMOND ORGAN and WHAMMY CLAV all the around the world and then put in every single bit of energy and conviction into every performance, I feel like I'm gonna faint sometimes. Not to mention the cost of maintenance and petrol on my van when it's running over 15,0000 kms a year SO…. when you find yourself home after driving 12 hours straight from an incredible week away playing 5 awesome shows to standing ovations at Woodford Folk Festival but you simply can't pay your mortgage and feed the family that week. It's time to really think hard about WHETHER THIS IS ALL WORTH IT. Sadly, There's no work with Jim at the moment as he's doing his book tour and the small amount he has coming up is directly when I've booked my new Album tour. BAD TIMING Don't get me wrong I know I've achieved so much and I know I'm a great product. Infant everyday someone comments to me about how well I'm doing or how I'm just killing it at the moment. This makes me feel good for second but because I know that it's totally not the case it really brings me down further. I'm still flat broke, actually broker than ever. I'm seriously this close to just giving up and finding a real job. But I've got to see this new album and it's tour through. So i wanted to ask a few things: If you do enjoy my music, watch my videos, learn from my videos or get something good from what I do, would you consider helping me to keep them coming by becoming a member of my VIP membership group. It's a bit like CROWDFUNDING by a more spread out and sustainable version. All the info is here at www.lachydoley.com/vip please watch the video and see if it's something you'd like to be apart of :-) Otherwise if you're planning to buy a copy or preorder of the new album at some point. Would you mind doing it now as I'll get the funds almost immediately AND it'll help my chances of charting on the week it's released. You can do that here www.lachydoley.com/bandcamp If you're in Australia, Please come to one or more of my shows and book early so the venues don't freak about whether anyones coming. All the shows are listed here www.lachydoley.com/shows SHARE AND TAG THE HELL out of my videos and posts :-) Sorry for the depressing tone of this email but it's just where I am right now. Thanks so much everyone and happy new year. Today's Guest: Billy Powell, keyboard player, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington-Collins Band, Allen Collins Band Order 'Lynyrd Skynyrd - Same Old Blues: Live In London 1975' from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD cover above! 1983 I remember the day I interviewed the Allen Collins Band. It was May 5, 1983, and it was memorable for many reasons. First, of course, was that I got to speak with Billy Powell, Randall Hall and Leon Wilkeson, former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, who had reformed, first as the Rossington-Collins Band, then as the Allen Collins Band. Second, the guys in the band were so disarmingly nice. And third, in interviewing the Allen Collins Band, I literally interviewed everyone in the band except their leader, Allen Collins. To this day, I’m not sure where Allen was, but the band’s manager fed me everyone else in the band in the hopes Allen would eventually show up. This was fun, but a little challenging; I was only prepared for Allen. It took a little imagination to think of questions for everyone; amazingly, the conversation went on for 70 minutes before we all acknowledged Allen wasn’t coming and we called it a day. And ultimately my editor decided not to publish a story about the Allen Collins Band without Allen Collins. I was reminded of all this when I heard about the passing of original Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell on January 28, 2009. As I understand it, Powell joined Skynyrd first as a roadie. One day, according to legend, singer Ronnie Van Zant heard Powell play “Freebird” on the piano and invited him to join the band as a player. Order '20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best Of The Rossington Collins Band' from Amazon.com by clicking on the CD cover above! In 1977, Powell was on the chartered plane that crashed and killed Van Zant, as well as Steve Gaines and injured the rest of the band, Powell included. Over the next decade, Powell played in two Skynyrd spinoffs, the Rossington-Collins Band and the Allen Collins Band. And when Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987, Powell was there. He continued playing with Skynyrd, behind Ronnie Von Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, until Powell’s death. I hope you’ll enjoy this never-before-heard Mr. Media “Lost Tapes” interview with the Allen Collins Band—including the late Billy Powell, recorded on May 5, 1983.
