If you’re a fan of 80’s hard rock, chances are that you heard Terry Ilous‘ voice and might not even be aware. Of late, Terry Ilous is probably best known as Jack Russell's replacement in Great White (“Once Bitten, Twice Shy”), a position he held from 2010 until his surprising dismissal in 2018, but from the mid-80s until the mid-90s, Ilous fronted the Sunset Strip band XYZ (“Inside Out”, “What Keeps Me Loving You”, “Face Down in the Gutter”). In this revealing conversation, Ilous shares how XYZ bassist Pat Fontaine tricked him into moving to the U.S. from France with promises of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll, the unlikely way XYZ landed a record deal with Enigma Records, working with Don Dokken on the band's 1989 debut, touring with the likes of Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne, and Ted Nugent, the arrival of grunge and the devastating effects it had on Ilous's career for the rest of the ‘90s and how he left the music business for a number of years before being lured back in through the unlikeliest of ways (voiceover work for cartoons). Ilous has reformed XYZ and still plays shows under that band name while also releasing solo material and fronting Land of Gypsies, whose self-titled debut was released by Frontiers Music in December. Terry Ilous isn't exactly a household name but he's an artist that has had some success across multiple genres. He fronted his band XYZ in the late 1980s and early 90s, spent more than eight years as Jack Russell's successor as the lead singer of Great White, and has done a lot of Latin-influenced and Flamenco-type music as well. Terry's new project, Land of Gypsies, released its self-titled debut album Dec. 10 and it pays tribute to some of the great bands of the 70s, such as Bad Company, Humble Pie, and early Foreigner and Whitesnake. Terry was gracious enough to talk to me about the making of Land of Gypsies, his time in Great White, the status of XYZ (new music coming?!?), some of his solo work, and more. You can learn more about Terry at his website and you can order Land of Gypsies from Amazon or Frontiers Music or on the digital services. Episode Description: We talk with XYZ's founders Terry Ilous and Patt Fontaine about their history and the recent Monsters Of Rock Cruise, as well as what's coming up for the band. Since we love XYZ, we decide to do a quick top 3 showcasing some of our favorite tunes from the band's catalog. What's The Story? XYZ came together in Lyon (France) where bassist Patt Fontaine and vocalist Terry Ilous were born and grew up. The band migrated to Los Angeles in 1986. XYZ started off as the unofficial house band of "The Whisky A Go Go". The original members were Terry Ilous (vocals), Bobby Pieper (guitars), Patt Fontaine (bass) and Joey Pafumi (drums). A tour of the US with Enuff Z'Nuff and Alice Cooper followed the success of their 1989 Enigma-released debut album, and they were signed by major label Capitol for their second. - Source Wikipedia The Band's History XYZ played clubs throughout the mid 1980's and first got a record deal in 1989 with Don Dokken as their producer. Ilous and Fontaine then recruited Mark Diglio (guitars) and Paul Monroe (drums) to replace the departing Pieper and Pafumi, to record their debut album. Terry Ilous's vocal style on the band's first album was very similar to Dokken's. The album contained the hits "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You." Videos for both songs received reasonable airplay and the album reached No. 99 on the Billboard charts. A third single from the album, "Maggy," was used in the 1990 Dolph LundgrenmovieI Come in Peace. The next album, Hungry, released in 1991, failed to chart, but I loved it. Diglio and Monroe left the band and were replaced by Tony Burnett and Joey Shapiro, respectively. After the next tour was finished, band members went separate ways once again. XYZ reunited in 2002 with the lineup of Ilous, Fontaine, Tony Marcus, and Shapiro, and still perform to the present day. - Source Wikipedia Growin' Up Rock Podcast Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.com Like us and leave us a review on our FaceBook page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock Subscribe to our Podcast at the platform of your choice and leave us a review Support Music / Artist / and Your Favorite Podcast You can help out the Podcast by doing all of your shopping at Amazon using our link below. Sound Matters episode #075 features Tom's conversation with Mark Kendall from the multiplatinum band, Great White. Mark’s passion and natural abilities got him hooked on guitar at a young age. Mark is a solid supporter of MusiCares, and like me big-time recovery advocate. Mark's relentless efforts to help those seeking a sober life have been expressed in feature stories on Fox News and numerous national radio programs and podcasts. With his rock pedigree, and double digit years of sobriety, I knew Mark and I had to talk at length about two of my favorite subjects (and his I suspect): rock and roll and recovery. Mark's passion for both is evident in this in-depth and honest conversation...SOUND MATTERS Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/soundmattersInside the Interview:02:26 - Working with Michael Wagener on Great White's "Full Circle" album and documentary...07:36 - On parting ways with former vocalist, Terry Ilous and the addition of Mitch Malloy...11:16 - On still creating and writing new music decades into his career...13:15 - A couple of overlooked Great White song's from band's back catalog... 16:35 - On former lead singer, Jack Russell and their parting of ways... 19:00 - On Mark's sobriety, backstory, philosophies, and work as a recovery advocate today...34:50 - Mark's view on the meaning of "working on yourself" in recovery... 42:53 - Mark's online recovery efforts and endeavors...46:25 - On the difference between wanting vs. needing to make changes in recovery... 53:33 - On creativity and sobriety... 56:38 - Mark's message to someone still struggling with addiction or abuse...61:29 - Reach out to Mark...Connect with Mark Kendall & Great White:Website: www.officialgreatwhite.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/GreatWhiteOfficialFacebook: www.facebook.com/MarkSKendallTwitter: www.twitter.com/MarkKendall_GWInstagram: www.instagram.com/mr._greatwhite (@mr._greatwhite)Connect with TOM LEU:Websites: www.SoundMatters.tv | www.TomLeu.com | www.16Imaging.com Official Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/tomleu2Twitter: www.twitter.com/tomleu (@tomleu)Instagram: www.instagram.com/tomleu (@tomleu)YouTube: www.talkshiFt.tv "Sound Matters Radio" Episode 075 at www.SoundMatters.tv/sound-matters-radio-075/

A new KISS tribute album is coming out in August. Many KISS fans will let out a collective yawn when they hear this news. But, this time it's different; for many reasons. Good friend of the Decibel Geek Podcast and a podcast personality in his own right (Dropping the Needle and Three Sidesof the Coin), Mitch Lafon joins us to discuss project he's put together that is nearing completion that helps celebrate 40 years of the Hottest Band in the Land. The kicker? It's all done for a good cause; and the KISS Army has supported it in droves. A World With Heroes features professionally recorded performances from many artists that warm the hearts of Decibel Geek listeners everywhere. The artists involve donated their time and efforts for free and all of the proceeds go towards helping The Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care, a cancer care hospice that took care of Mitch's father-in-law in his final days. The project has been funded through Pledge Music We hear the whole story of how this project was launched, its personal meaning to Mitch, and why KISS fans truly have the biggest hearts of any rock fans with how they've embraced this project and helped it come to fruition. Also in this long-form discussion are takes on specific tracks on the album and personal stories from Mitch about how this project served as an open door for many musicians to meet one another and, in one case, actually form a band that plans to play live. Mitch Lafon can be found on his own podcasts at the following links: Three Sides of the Coin (KISS-themed podcast) Dropping the Needle (All music discussion) Both are fantastic shows. Mitch's co-host on both shows is former KISS webmaster Michael Brandvold and Three sides of the Coin features Tommy Sommers as well. All KISS fans would be well-advised to check out both podcasts as they offer a great discussion-based show that can be very thought provoking.
