The Outlaws had a long history as a band prior to the release of this debut album. Formed originally in 1967 in Tampa, Florida, the original name for the group was "The Four Letter Words." They toured off and on through the early 70's, and made an aborted attempt at an album the late 60's. Finally, they were signed by Clive Davis and Arista Records while opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ronnie Van Zant told Davis and future Outlaws manager Charlie Brusco, "If you don't sign Outlaws, you're the dumbest music person I've ever met - and I know you're not."The debut and eponymously named album Outlaws would blend Southern rock with Country and hard rock, and would create a great concert draw for the band. Their use of three guitars would come to be known as "the Florida Guitar Army." Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones both provided lead guitar and vocals, and Henry Paul would provide further electric and acoustic guitar as well as vocals. Monte Yoho on drums and Frank O'Keefe on bass would round out the group. While there's definitely a Southern Rock feel to the Outlaws, there is also a lot of Country and even bluegrass mixed in. The technical chops are impressive, and there is a lot of harmony employed in the group as well. The album would peak at number 13 on the Billboard Top LP's & Tape chart.Wayne takes us through this guitar-driven Southern Rock album for this week's podcast. WaterholeThis instrumental song leads off side two of the album, and has a bluegrass feel. It is the opening track to side two of the album. There Goes Another Love SongThe hit single on the album also is the leading track. It peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Hughie Thomasson on lead vocals. The lyrics depict a guy on the road who is missing his faraway love, and seems to encounter love songs one after another.Song for YouThis may appear to be an instrumental at first because of the long intro before the vocals come in. The lyrics reflect a guy who is breaking a girl's heart, but can't seem to avoid doing so. There are some great harmonies in this track.Green Grass and High TidesThe last song on the album is a true epic. The album version is almost 10 minutes long, but has been stretched to 30-minute versions in concert jams. Hughie Thomasson conceived the album while at a beach cookout and imagining all the rock greats who had passed on rising from the grave to play a show. The name comes from a Rolling Stones' "Best of" album title. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “The Apple Dumpling Gang”Walt Disney Productions put out this comedy western about a gambler tricked into taking care of a group of orphans. Bill Bixby, Don Knotts, and Tim Conway star in this movie. STAFF PICKS:One of These Nights by the EaglesLynch starts off the staff picks with a song penned by the duo of Glenn Frey and Don Henley. It became the second number 1 single for the group in the US, behind "Best of My Love." This track takes inspiration from soul music like Al Green and B.B. King, and has been described as an anthem for procrastinators and dreamers. Blue Sky by Joan BaezRob profiles a cover song originally performed by the Allman Brothers on their 1972 album, "Eat a Peach." Originally written by Dickey Betts about his girlfriend Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig, Baez covers this on her 1975 album "Diamonds & Rust." If it sounds familiar to you, Baez is actually backed up by the Allman Brothers Band for this single.Landslide by Fleetwood MacBruce features a song written by Stevie Nicks at a time when she was considering whether to continue to pursue life as a musician or give up her dream and go back to school. Despite its popularity today, the song was not originally released as a single until the live version from "The Dance" in 1997.Motorhead by HawkwindWayne closes out the staff picks with a B-side from the prog rock group Hawkwind written by bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister while he was with the group. Lemmy was fired from the band one day before the album's release, but would go on to fame in the band Motorhead. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Journey of the Sorcerer by the EaglesA rare instrumental from the Eagles takes us out this week. when I was growing up, calls for firearm regulation were often met with the reply, “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Look back on this piece of logic, no one would want to live in a society where the men responsible for “Green Grass & High Tides” were toting guns, however it doesn't seem as though it would be very difficult to keep an eye on them (even with all the lineup changes). I'm not sure I understand why it would make more sense to expect educators to arm themselves versus a) outlawing guns, b) keeping The Outlaws and all spinoffs (“The New Outlaws”, “The Original Outlaws”, “Henry Paul's Outlaws”, Blackhawk etc.) under surveillance, but if I spend any more time on Twitter today, someone is absolutely going to explain it to me.

Escuchar audio

During recording sessions for their 2019 original album release FIGHT LIKE A BAND, the band warmed up each day by ripping through some of their favorite southern rock classics; what started as a fun way to loosen up in the studio has now become a powerful musical statement. “At first, we didn’t even know Mike (producer Mike Dresch) was recording,” Ron says. “We were just having fun. But of course, Mike records everything we do, and when I started listening back I realized that we had something special on our hands. “South X South Dakota is a really cool way to pay tribute to those southern rock heroes that provided such a big part of the soundtrack of our lives, while introducing a new generation of fans to these timeless songs.” The album’s first single and video is “Red White & Blue,” originally recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dealing with the “social distancing” required during the global 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the band members were each filmed at separate iconic locations including Mt. Rushmore. Another featured track is “Don’t Misunderstand Me,” a hard rocking duet which pairs the Metal Cowboy with the powerhouse vocalist Jasmine Cain (2016 Nashville Music Awards “Artist Of The Year”). RKB’s cover of the Outlaws classic “Ghost Riders In The Sky” (produced by Henry Paul) was the debut single and video when they were known as the “Badlands House Band,” and “Homesick” (originally recorded by Atlanta Rhythm Section) was their 2017 summer single. Both of those recordings are included in the new SxSD collection. “For 10 years during the 80’s, Hollywood was home,” Keel reflects. “But I was born in Georgia as the son of a construction worker, and Nashville’s where I got my start as a recording artist. My fans as well as my critics all know that I have one foot on either side of the tracks; there’s a common thread here that ties it all together – toughness and twang as Metal and Country collide on sacred southern ground.”

The lads return to digest a massive week of Six Nations and Premiership rugby, the development of whatever World Rugby are calling the World League now and the Saracens salary cap drama. Jack talks about the magic of the cup! Tom bemoans the existence of Henry Paul! Christy is still here! Part 1: The penultimate weekend of the 6 Nations went, pretty much, according to plan. Nonetheless, the pod dissect a stonking England win over Italy, analyse Ireland defeating a plucky France and look over a Wales shut out of Scotland. There is also Premiership Rugby, Womens 6 Nations and plenty more to discuss. Part 2: There’s Super Rugby to pick over, Premiership Rugby Cup Final and 6 Nations previews, some hefty Huge Scoops as World Rugby can’t make their minds up on anything at the moment. Part 3: The Hall of Fame opens its doors again, we have listener questions and think some rather unpleasant thoughts about the Barrett Brothers.
For more than 20 years, BlackHawk has shared a unique sense of harmony with their voices, their songs and their fans. It’s a harmony that has sold over 7 million albums, scored some of the most distinctive country radio hits of the ‘90s, and still draws tens of thousands of fans to their electrifying live performances. Today BlackHawk continues to honor its past as it forges its future, and does it all with a commitment that takes their music – and the harmony – to a whole new level. “When we started,” says BlackHawk co-founder & lead vocalist Henry Paul, “our individual careers as writers and performers gave us somewhat of a more creative sensibility. We were three guys whose goal was to approach country with smart songs and unique harmonies for people who may not automatically like country.” Paul had previously co-founded Southern Rock legends The Outlaws, as well as leading the popular ‘80s rockers The Henry Paul Band. Van Stephenson had mainstream pop success as an ‘80s singer-songwriter-guitarist (“Modern Day Delilah”). And Dave Robbins had written hits for Eric Clapton and Kenny Rogers while partnering with Stephenson to write a series of classic #1 hits for Restless Heart, including “The Bluest Eyes In Texas” and “Big Dreams In A Small Town”. “Even though the three of us had a love and appreciation for traditional country music,” says Dave, “we knew we weren’t going to be that. Henry was coming from Southern Rock, Van & I were in Nashville, but were writing country songs with pop sensibilities. When it came to our vocals, we wanted the three of us to be up front in the choruses like Crosby, Stills & Nash or The Eagles. What set us apart from the very beginning musically was being true to who we were individually.” BlackHawk’s 1993 self-titled Arista debut album launched with the smash single “Goodbye Says It All”, followed by the Top 5 hits "Every Once in a While", "I Sure Can Smell the Rain", "Down in Flames" and "That's Just About Right". The album soon certified Double-Platinum, and the band received an ACM nomination as Best New Vocal Group Of The Year. BlackHawk followed up with the hit albums Strong Enough, Love & Gravity and Sky’s The Limit, which collectively featured such hits as “I’m Not Strong Enough To Say No”, “Like There Ain’t No Yesterday”, “Big Guitar”, “Almost A Memory Now”, “There You Have It” and “Postmarked Birmingham”. It was an unprecedented run of hits for a band that never quite fit the standard country mold. “Getting a BlackHawk record on the radio was often a tough sell,” explains Henry, “for the same reason country radio rejected bands like The Mavericks, The Dixie Chicks and Alison Krauss. But we were committed to smart, strong songs whether they fit the format or not. And the fans responded.” www.throwbackcountrymusicpodcast.com bjones@throwbackcountrymusicpodcast.com Facebook.com/britjonesmusic and Facebook.com/throwbackcountrymusic Twitter: @britjonesmusic Instagram: @britjonesmusic Enjoy the show and please hit the subscribe button (it's free!) The southern rock band The Outlaws will be playing at Infinity Hall in Norfolk at the end of June. Henry Paul, singer and guitarist of the band, joined the “On the Record: Music” podcast to discuss the bands tour, their history and his career.
Southern rock unit the Outlaws were formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1972 by singers/guitarists Hughie Thomasson and Henry Paul, bassist Frank O'Keefe, and drummer Monte Yoho. With the 1973 addition of guitarist Billy Jones, the lineup was complete, and after a year of intense touring the band became the first act signed to Arista under Clive Davis; the Outlaws' self-titled 1975 album spotlighted their Eagles-influenced harmonies and Allman Brothers-like guitar attack, yielding the Top 40 hit "There Goes Another Love Song."
