Many liberals believe that in recent years we have seen an erosion of the right to air unpopular opinions without the risk of being cancelled. We are in an ever-intensifying shutting down of conversation, they maintain, with constituencies on both the left and the right demanding that opinions they don't like be declared out of bounds, socially, morally or legally. But some argue otherwise: that the so-called free speech crisis is completely a fiction. What we're really seeing is a rebalance of power in elite institutions where privileged groups are being held to account for their words by others who have been historically excluded and marginalised. Intelligence Squared's new book series THINK AGAIN, published in partnership with The Bodley Head invites two authors to debate the way forward. For the release of the first book, Is Free Speech Under Threat? Our authors are CEO of PEN America Suzanne Nossel and historian Charlotte Lydia Riley. The two recently joined Intelligence Squared live onstage in London to debate the issue. Chairing the discussion was BBC News presenter and Royal Correspondent, Jonny Dymond. Paul Johnson is the economist who has set the terms of so much political debate over the past few decades in Britain. Having served as Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies since 2011, his expertise on matters of public spending and global economic trends have provided invaluable insight to the public and policymakers alike. Johnson's column for the Times, as well as his acclaimed Austerity Audit for Radio 4, continue to define public discourse on economic policy and its implications. In October 2024 Johnson brought his expertise to the Intelligence Squared stage to reflect on a year of seismic change and assess the impact of the 2024 general election on the country's economic future. Does Starmer have what it takes to grow the economy? How can Britain hope to compete with innovation in tech and AI on the global stage? What shape should defence spending take in an increasingly volatile world, and how can we begin to tackle domestic issues such as child poverty, cost of living, a crippled NHS and a stubborn housing crisis? Joining Johnson in conversation is BBC News presenter and Royal Correspondent, Jonny Dymond. We're thrilled to get an hour to talk with Simon Vigar, one of Britain's most experienced royal correspondents and writers, who is now the Royal Correspondent for 5 News.Simon has had a ring side seat for all of the great royal dramas of the last two decades, and he brings an unusual level of sympathy and insight to the role. Amongst other things Phil and Andrew ask Simon for his views on the long term impact on Harry of the 'briefing wars' of the early 2000s when very unflattering stories about Diana and other royals were - it is alleged - traded by the Palace for favourable coverage of Charles and Camilla. The Princess of Wales has issued a personal message revealing that she has been diagnosed with cancerfollowing her abdominal surgery earlier this year and that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy. The news comes after many weeks of speculation about the health of the 42-year-old future queen, who has not been seen on official duties since Christmas. On the Sky News Daily, Jonathan Samuels is joined by our Royal Correspondent, Rhiannon Mills to discuss how this news will impact the Royal Family and when we can expect to see Catherine resume full duties.Producer: Rosie GillottEditor: Wendy
My two main niches in both my life and my work are books (but you already knew that) and the royal family. You may not know this about me—or maybe you do—but my main specialty coverage area in my work is the royals, and boy, has it been one hell of a ride in the British royal family this year, especially with one Kate Middleton as of late. One of the best royal correspondents in the game is our guest today, Vanity Fair's Erin Vanderhoof, who is deeply talented and someone I consider to be the gold standard in royal reporting. In addition to covering the royal family, she also covers culture, books, and music for Vanity Fair, and she and fellow royal expert Katie Nicholl co-host the podcast “Dynasty” about the royal family, which I love. Yet another podcast I need more episodes from! Erin's reporting on the royals has been featured on Today, NBC News, BBC's Newsnight, CBS Sunday Mornings, and CNN, where, randomly, Erin and I appeared together on a 5 a.m. segment the day after the Queen died talking about her passing. I enjoyed hearing about Erin's entry point into covering the royals, hearing about her favorite royal family books, and, interestingly, about her past jobs as a teacher and a butcher. Royal reporting is a very interesting beat, and Erin is the leader of the pack. Erin's work at Vanity Fair “Dynasty” podcast Katie Nicholl's books Tina Brown's books + I love leaving you with three! The Royals by Kitty Kelley The entire Kate Andersen Brower collection The News Sorority: Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Christiane Amanpour—and the Triumph of Women in TV News by Sheila Weller
Kate Middleton has been missing from the public spotlight for about two weeks, with a more recent photo of the Princess of Wales appearing today. However, that hasn't shut up the conspiracy theories on social media Kieran was joined by host of The Home Show on Newstalk and our own resident Royal Correspondent, Sinead Ryan to discuss...
Kensington Palace is refusing to comment on a new image of the Princess of Wales, after concerns it's been manipulated. The picture posted this morning to celebrate Mother's Day in the UK shows Catherine with her three children. But, The Associated Press, Reuters and Getty have pulled the image from circulation. ITV royal correspondent Chris Ship says this photo was meant to dampen speculation around the Princess, but it's done the opposite. "You've now got three or four major international picture agencies who have all pulled it for various reasons, I think one said there were fears it had been manipulated, another said they had serious post-production concerns." It's a delicate balancing act for Buckingham Palace between transparency and King Charles' privacy. The monarch is being treated for cancer, discovered during a separate procedure. The King and Queen Camilla have been seen for the first time since the diagnosis, driven from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace where it's believed they flew to Sandringham. Prince Harry's arrived in the UK. Royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter told Mike Hosking that it's not known what cancer he has or what treatment he's getting, and more information usually leads to more speculation. She says if the Palace had said what type of cancer he has, there'd be a litany of doctors on television talking about prognosis and life span. The Coronation ceremony is over but the celebrations are continuing as the day is dissected from every angle. Royal correspondent Sarah Hewson said that the festivities were incomparable to most recent royal events, more similar to the Platinum Jubilee than any of the weddings or the Queen's Funeral. She says that the kids absolutely stole the show, and the fact that so many people showed up to celebrate the new King and Queen despite their difficult history when it comes to their popularity and media presence would've been relieving. Since 2018 Scobie's posts and reporting on the UK Royals made him a go-to person to get the current news. In fact, Scobie often broke exclusive stories on the Sussexes, so much so that it became widely rumoured that he was a close friend of Harry and Meghan. Scobie has recently denied being a close friend. However it is clear his career has benefitted from the illusion of this connection. In recent months, anyone following Scobie's Twitter account will have noticed that he no longer exclusively breaks stories about Meghan and Harry. I had already started to wonder if there had been a falling out / cooling off between Scobie and Harry & Meghan, then this past week I came across headlines that seemed to reinforce my feelings. Listen to hear my thoughts on this possible break-down in their working relationship. Show written and produced by Jeanette Songolo. Please keep listening for future podcasts on all things Meghan, Harry, Archie and Lili and in the meantime watch out for other posts on all things Sussex on my blog at https://www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com/
On this episode, Martha is joined by the Royal Correspondent for The Times, Valentine Low, to share his perspective on the fallout from the release of Prince Harry's book Spare. Valentine describes how the British media was wrongfully criticized for their coverage of Meghan Markle joining the Royal family, and how social media has contributed to the rift between Prince Harry and Prince William. Later, Valentine talks about what went into the writing of his new book, Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, the ins and outs of covering the Royal Family, and if the relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles III can be repaired before the King's coronation in May. It was always going to be a disaster. Queues of HGVs stretching miles from Dover. The Good Friday Agreement threatened by the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol and increased support for Scottish Independence. That's the argument of the doomsayers in this debate. But others claim that while short-term damage is inevitable – there is always blowback from a jilted partner – Brexit is a long-term project, one that is tied to the fundamental principle of sovereignty. Which side is right? To debate the issue, we welcome back Conservative politician Daniel Hannan, Labour MP Stella Creasy, and are joined by Robert Tombs, the historian of France and Britain, whose most recent book is This Sovereign Isle: Britain In and Out of Europe. Plus, Dominic Grieve, former Conservative MP and former Attorney General for England and Wales. Chairing the debate is Johnny Dymond, BBC News presenter and Royal Correspondent.
