Imagine serving your country with unwavering dedication, only to find yourself struggling to provide basic meals for your family. This week on Sisters in Service, we confront the urgent and often overlooked issue of food insecurity among military families. Drawing from my own experiences as a single parent in the Air Force, I bring to light the harsh financial realities faced by so many within our ranks. Despite what appears to be a generous military budget, systemic barriers like the inclusion of the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) as income make countless service members ineligible for crucial food assistance programs. This episode is a heartfelt plea for change, a call to acknowledge and address the needs of those who serve. As we unpack these systemic issues, the focus shifts to advocacy and the pressing need for legislative action. The frustration is palpable as we discuss the role of active-duty personnel and the necessary push for accountability from our leaders, particularly in Congress. This conversation underscores the responsibility of decision-makers to ensure military families have their basic needs met. We close with an empowering reminder: it's never too late to demand change and work toward solutions, no matter how insurmountable the challenge may seem. Tune in to understand why this issue demands our collective attention and action.Support the show

In this episode, I'm joined by David Evetts, who serves as the President of the USAA Educational Foundation. Since 1986, The USAA Educational Foundation has served the military community by helping service members and their families become informed financial decision-makers through every life stage. USAA, the founder and sponsor of The USAA Educational Foundation, is a San Antonio, Texas-based financial services company that provides auto, homeowners, and life insurance products and, banking and investment services. While USAA is the sponsor, The USAA Educational Foundation does not endorse or promote any commercial supplier, products, or services. Before this current role, David served as the USAA CEO's chief of staff/aide-de-camp with previous leadership roles in CEO Communications, Corporate Responsibility, External Affairs, and Enterprise Innovation. David joined USAA in 2011 through the Junior Military Officer Career Development Program after serving in the Army. Over the course of our interview we chat about these roles and more including David's perspectives on how to balance the dual goals of serving the military community with education or support along with finding ways to have a career. David also shares some particularly relevant advice related to looking for a company that aligns with your values instead of the particulars of the job or even role. Lastly, we chat about the challenges of shedding the military identity when making a career transition and how to be known as a leader, not just a veteran. There are definitely some pearls of wisdom in there. Here's my interview with David Evetts.   https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidevetts/ https://usaaef.org/

Schneider Electric's David Abrahams Named New Chair of the iMasons Armed Forces Meeting Resources Group (MRG) The iMasons Armed Forces MRG is a strategic initiative formed to raise awareness of data centres in the military community, showcasing the industry's career opportunities, and educating the sector about the value that veterans can bring to mission-critical organisations. As Chair, David Abrahams will continue to champion the iMasons values and support for veterans seeking employment in technical, engineering and operational roles across digital infrastructure. His appointment reinforces Schneider Electric's long-term commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and follows its recent announcement of the Veterans Transition Programme, alongside its mission to bridge the data centre skills shortage. Dealing with data centres in the military community Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has today announced that David Abrahams, Key Client Manager, Cloud & Service Providers, Secure Power division, has been named the new Chair of the iMasons Armed Forces Meeting Resources Group (MRG). The iMasons Armed Forces MRG is a strategic initiative, formed to increase the number of military veterans, military spouses, guards, and reservists working in data centres and digital infrastructure. It helps to both raise awareness and showcase the industry's career opportunities for veterans, while informing and educating the data centre sector about the value that veterans can offer to mission-critical organisations. As its new Chair, David Abrahams replaces Mike Eytle, EMEA Regional Director, Datacentre Lease Construction and Fit-Out for Microsoft, and is appointed to lead alongside Lee Kirby, Executive Chair and Global Sponsor of the Armed Forces MRG, to build upon Mike's work - leading the initiative locally in the UK and Ireland (UK&I), and championing the iMasons support for veterans seeking employment in technical, engineering and operational roles. As a member of the Royal Air Force Reserves, David's ambition is to connect the iMasons with other industry Veteran Support Groups and bring together the digital infrastructure ecosystem to support veteran employment opportunities within the UK and Ireland. "The technology industry has a plethora of initiatives underway to help engage with graduates, apprentices and early talent, but is also calling out for highly experienced technical and operational personnel, who can provide a valuable contribution to the ever-growing data centre industry," said David Abrahams, Key Client Manager, Cloud & Service Providers, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric. "Being appointed Chair of the iMasons Armed Forces MRG provides us with a valuable opportunity to give back to those who have served for King and country, while helping to address the skills shortage by building the data centre workforce of the future." AI and data centre skills shortages With the significant increase in demand for energy and data centre capacity, fuelled by the growth of artificial intelligence (AI), David's appointment aligns with Schneider Electric's mission to bridge the sector's skills shortage, which according to Uptime Institute, will require 300,000 full-time employee equivalents by 2025. To address this, the company already has several digital programmes in place, including the Schneider Electric University, a vendor-agnostic and CPD accredited professional development platform, which helps stakeholders upskill and stay up-to-date with the latest technology, sustainability, and energy efficiency initiatives. To date, the Schneider Electric University has delivered more than one million, free-to-attend courses to over 650,000 data centre, energy and sustainability professionals, and has more than 180 countries represented by its global user-base. Additionally, Schneider Electric recently announced its new Schneider Electric Training programme, c...

Veteran Transition: Insights from a Veteran LeaderOn my "Leadership" podcast, I had an enlightening talk with Connie, a veteran and chair of the Ohio Democratic Party's Veterans and Military Community Caucus. We discussed the hurdles veterans face when returning to civilian life and the essential support they need.Benefits and Healthcare ChallengesConnie shed light on the struggles veterans face accessing benefits and healthcare, especially those affected by toxic chemical exposure. We emphasized the need for both physical and mental health support, as well as programs to combat veteran homelessness and ease reentry into society.Veterans Treatment CourtsWe talked about veterans treatment courts, which provide a dedicated legal track for veterans with offenses often linked to their service. These courts understand veterans' unique situations, like traumatic brain injuries and PTSD, and work with VA hospitals to offer treatment over punishment.Reentry BarriersConnie recounted her own experience applying for a government lawyer role, where her veteran status and five years of experience weren't enough to secure an interview, illustrating the employment obstacles veterans encounter. We stressed the need for better reentry support, including healthcare, mental health services, and job opportunities.Military Families' StrugglesThe conversation also covered the emotional and mental strain on military spouses during deployment, highlighting the need for stronger support and resources for these families.Enhancing Healthcare and SupportConnie advocated for broader healthcare access, Medicaid expansion, and more veterans' homes for end-of-life care. She called for better mental health support and job opportunities for veterans transitioning to civilian life.Voting Rights and Food InsecurityWe touched on the need to improve voting rights for active-duty members and address food insecurity among service members and their families. Conclusion: A Call to ActionMy talk with Connie was a stark reminder of the multifaceted advocacy needed for veterans. From healthcare and mental health to employment and legal aid,  a comprehensive approach is vital. We must honor our veterans by ensuring they have the support for a successful civilian transition. I urge listeners and readers to think about how to aid veterans' well-being,  whether through advocacy, volunteering, or raising awareness. Every effort helps strengthen the support network for our nation's service members.Tamie Wilson is an entrepreneur, single mom and an advocate for all Ohio families, who has made it her life's work to help people live happier healthier lives. We continue with Part 2 of our miniseries sharing previously LIVE LinkedIn events that showcase trusted advisors and their top lessons for the military transition. On this episode we feature Marina Rabinek, who is the Founder and President of the Military Women's Collective while serving as the West Coast Regional Director for Four Block. The Military Women's Collective not only provides resources for homeless and food-insecure veterans, but it also gives mentorship opportunities to women transitioning out of the military. Kasie Valenti is an Army veteran and military spouse. Transitioning in 2016 and pivoting to marketing and communications, Kasie recently founded Sigma Forces, a career advancement organization. This organization offers education and certifications for the military community to upskill and become more employable.Lesson 1: Find Your Focus. Figuring out what you would like to do in your next career will dictate how you approach your transition and what resources you choose to utilize. You must know where you are going in order to find your way there. There are many resources available to help you find your purpose.Lesson 2: You Don't Have to Go through the Transition Process Alone. While there are times in the military that you are expected to be resourceful and figure something out on your own, that mindset will not serve you well during your transition. Utilize resources and find mentors to help you reach your goals. Lesson 3: Build Your Network before You Need It. Create a diverse network that includes people outside of the military community. Engage with your network even after you land your first position and give back to others. While a quality network is more important than quantity, it is possible to have both. It's never too late or too early to build your network, starting with LinkedIn. Lesson 4: Strengthen Your Mindset. Normalize that the transition is challenging. You will experience a roller coaster of emotions. As Ken Davenport states in The Stoic Transition, “You own the reaction and consequences of your choices.” You can choose how you approach transition.  Will you be fearful of the unknown or excited about the possibility of future opportunities?Lesson 5: Stay Connected to the Military Community in Some Way. Leaving the military can bring about feelings of loneliness and isolation. There are plenty of organizations that will help you feel that camaraderie again while serving others. Your local community has nonprofits that need your time and experience. Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22.Connect with Marina Rabinek at https://www.linkedin.com/in/marina-rabinek/Connect with Kasie Valenti at https://www.linkedin.com/in/kasie-valenti/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this with other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!
