The chief foreign correspondent of The Sunday Times and bestselling author of ‘I am Malala' and ‘The Girl From Aleppo' visits the South West. Christina Lamb's work is defined by determination and curiosity to vividly convey life in areas of danger and conflict. How else would the rest of us know about the injustice, the violence, but also the hope that can be found in those dark places? What is the point of bearing witness to the atrocities of war? What difference can journalism make? As one of Britain's leading foreign correspondents, Christina Lamb has never wavered from giving a voice to the unsung heroes of war, often women like the cyclists in Kabul, the Zimbabwean lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, and the famous Malala. In this talk, Christina Lamb speaks about the defining moments of her career as an author and journalist: travelling with the Mujahidin, the resistance fighting Soviet occupation in Afghanistan during the Cold War, being in a 360 Taliban ambush, and surviving a bus bombing at an assassination attempt on Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. After 38 years of reporting from the most dangerous places on earth, Christina shares why she still goes to war, asking what we can learn about humans, conflict, and resilience. CHRISTINA LAMB Author and Foreign Correspondent Christina Lamb is one of Britain's leading foreign journalists as well as a bestselling author. Her despatches with the Afghan mujaheddin fighting the Soviet Union saw her named Young Journalist of the Year at the age of 22. She has since reported everywhere from Iraq to Ukraine, Israel to Zimbabwe and been awarded Foreign Correspondent of the Year seven times as well as Europe's top war reporting prize, the Prix Bayeux, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from both the Society of Editors and Women in Journalism as well as the Chesney Gold Medal for promoting the understanding of war, previously awarded to Henry Kissinger and Winston Churchill. She has always particularly focused on what war does to women, and her book Our Bodies, Their Battlefields about sexual violence in conflict was described by leading historian Antony Beevor as ‘the most powerful book' he had ever read and recently recommended by Queen Camilla in a speech. She has written ten books including co-authoring the international bestseller I Am Malala. She is a Global envoy for UN Education Cannot Wait, Honorary Fellow of University College Oxford, on the board of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, and an Associate of the Imperial War Museum and was awarded an OBE in 2013.

When the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 2021 after two decades of democratic rule, the world watched in horror. Despite initial promises that women would be able to exercise their rights within Sharia Law, the Taliban has systematically excluded women and girls from public life.In the months that have followed, the situation has only grown more desperate for Afghanistan's women, who now live under one of the most restrictive regimes in the world. They are unable to access secondary education, travel without a male relative, and even more recently have been banned from attending universities and working for aid organisations, further erasing professional and public opportunities. To keep the spotlight on this worsening crisis – which is only being compounded by economic sanctions and the near-total isolation of Afghanistan in a global context – The Global Institute for Women's Leadership hosted a conversation about women's rights under the Taliban. In this episode, you'll hear that discussion, recorded live from the event at King's College London. For this conversation, Julia sat down with Zahra Joya, journalist and founder of Rukhshana Media, an organisation that tells the stories of Afghan women globally; Christina Lamb, the Chief Foreign Correspondent for The Sunday Times; Paula Kweskin, a filmmaker and attorney specialising in international humanitarian and human rights law; and Sveto Muhammad Ishoq, a women's rights activist, TEDx speaker and social entrepreneur. The award-winning Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina has died from her injuries after a Russian missile hit a pizza restaurant in the eastern city of Kramatorsk on Tuesday, where she was eating. Journalist Christina Lamb was a friend of Victoria's – she tells Nuala about her and the impact her death has had. Half of prison officers in England and Wales do not feel safe at work, according to a recent large-scale survey. Alex South spent 10 years working as a prison officer, and she's written a book, Behind These Doors, about her experiences. She speaks to Nuala about working in such a male-dominated environment and shares her stories. Up-and-coming actor Beth Alsbury takes the lead role in a new TV drama called Blindspot, which will be on our screens this week. Beth plays Hannah, who thinks she witnesses a potential murder, but struggles to get the local detective, played by Ross Kemp, to take her seriously. Beth joins Nuala to talk about going straight from drama school to set. On Holocaust Memorial Day earlier this year, Woman's Hour featured an audio series about young girls who'd come to the UK on the Kindertransport and lived in Tynemouth and the Lake District. A photograph used on BBC Sounds for the series featured three young girls, one whose identity was ‘unknown'. A listener told us the ‘unknown' girl was her mother, Hanna Singer. Her two daughters tell Nuala what happened next. The National Portrait Gallery has just reopened with an exhibition of the life and career of Yevonde, the pioneering London photographer who spearheaded the use of colour photography in the 1930s. Also open at the Photographer's Gallery is another exhibition of an influential female photographer, Evelyn Hofer, famous for documenting the lives of ordinary people, places, environments and objects. The curators of both exhibitions, Clare Freestone and Clare Grafik, tell Nuala why the contributions these women made may have been overlooked. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lottie Garton

The Sunday Times' Christina Lamb on the women involved in the war effort in Ukraine. We look at the trend of brides having their long hair cut into bobs before re-emerging with new hair at their wedding. Kyrelle Burton of Devon Wedding Hair, did her first mid-wedding chop for a bride last year. Molly Duane is the senior lawyer for the US-based Center for Reproductive Rights who are challenging Texas state law on abortion on behalf of more than a dozen women. The case is regarded as important because it is being seen as a nationwide model for abortion rights advocates to challenge new abortion laws that have rolled out since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade a year ago this month. Molly discusses the case with Nuala. No single person can take credit for the huge boom in women's football but if any one can it's the woman who placed second on the Woman's Hour Power List, Baroness Sue Campbell. The Director of Women's Football at the FA joins Nuala to discuss the Lionesses legacy, the upcoming World Cup and the future of the Women's Super League. In 2020 Baroness Cumberlege authored a report into two drugs and a medical device that caused women or their babies harm. The device in question was vaginal mesh, and the report described how using mesh in surgery for prolapse and incontinence had resulted in serious adverse outcomes for women across the UK. One of the recommendations from that report is about to get underway, to measure the impact of surgery on women's lives. Anita is joined by Georgina Jones, Professor of Health Psychology at Leeds Beckett University to find out more, and by Hannah Devlin, science correspondent for the Guardian. I Am Malala I Am Malala Full Book Introduction When Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan, she was a normal girl, but she went on to resist terrorists and advocate for women's right to education. As a result, she was shot in the head by armed militants at the age of 15, but she miraculously survived. Her story moved the world, and she won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize at only 17 years old. How did she have the superhuman courage to face death, and how did she maintain such strong convictions in her fight for equality? Let's experience this brave and visionary tale together. Author : Malala Yousafzai, Christina LambMalala Yousafzai, born in 1997 in Pakistan, became well-known when she published an article on the BBC website at age 11 that argued for children's and women's rights to education. When she won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, she was only 17 years old, making her the youngest person to ever win the prize. Christina Lamb is a well-known British war journalist who started covering Pakistan and Afghanistan in 1987. She has been named Britain's Foreign Correspondent of the Year five times, and she has received Europe's highest honor for war correspondents, the Prix Bayeux-Calvados. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book, I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban. In the beginning of the 21st century, most people living in peaceful countries enjoyed comfortable lives, and they saw the right to education as a given. They could hardly imagine that, under the same sky, many corners of this world were full of war. The dark places were overrun with fear. Citizens of those countries were being tossed between endless oppression and torment, and countless children were yearning for education and equal treatment, but they struggled in vain. They may have been impacted by poverty, illness, or war, but all of them wanted the world to hear their voices, and the author of this book, Malala Yousafzai, was one of them. Malala was born to a normal family in the Swat Valley of Pakistan. When frequent terrorist activity broke out in Pakistan, and an anti-government organization, the Taliban, controlled their small village in the Swat Valley, she refused to be silent. Instead, she stood up to her oppressors and fought for the right to an education. She was regarded as the terrorist organization's enemy, a label that put her life in jeopardy. She was shot by a terrorist at the age of 15. After miraculously surviving, she became the youngest person to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17. I Am Malala, the autobiographical account of these experiences, was on the New York Times best-seller list for over a year. In the book, she reveals a terrorist organization's evil deeds and darkest facets, giving an account of her extraordinary struggle to secure women's right to education. Time magazine commented, “In trying to silence this Pakistani schoolgirl, the Taliban amplified her voice. She is now a symbol of the struggle for women's rights all over the world.” Malala mentions in her book that there are 57 million children in the world who have not been able to attend elementary school, and Pakistan is one of the countries where this problem is most serious. In 2014, the World Bank released a report that showed there were 7 million people in Pakistan who were deprived of education, and two thirds of those people were women. Most of the people who have lost out on schooling don't have basic arithmetic, reading, or other language skills. A UNESCO survey found that the main barriers that stand between children and education

Bedside Reading

I'm joined this week by Victoria Kinkaid, military doctor, women's health enthusiast, feminist and host of the Virago Voices podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/virago-voices/id1518617892We had a brilliant conversation about Half the Sky a book which is sadly just as relevant and current now as it was in 2009 when it was first published. A review in the New York Times  explains that “Half the Sky” tackles atrocities and indignities from sex trafficking to maternal mortality, from obstetric fistulas to acid attacks, and absorbing the fusillade of horrors can feel like an assault of its own. But the poignant portraits of survivors humanize the issues, divulging facts that moral outrage might otherwise eclipse. It does this and so much more, illustrating with individual human stories big issues across the world and twins them with solutions and calls to activism.  It's an important book and a deep one but also a book full of hope and opportunity.Victoria and I also mention briefly Christina Lamb's stunning book Our Bodies, Their Battlefield which we'd also both read recently and which complements Half the Sky  brilliantly (Guardian review here:  https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/08/our-bodies-their-battlefield-christina-lamb-review-women-war-rape-victims) Follow Victoria on Twitter here:  https://twitter.com/vkinkaid11

Kniha Our Bodies Their Battlefield (Naše telá, ich bojisko; William Collins 2020) je pre mňa jednou z najsilnejších a zároveň najbolestnejších kníh literatúry faktu, aké som čítala. Mapuje to, čo vojna robí ženám všade vo svete - hrubé násilie, ktoré je cielené, premyslené, a ničí nielen individuálne ženy, ale celé komunity a spoločenstvá efektívne a najmä lacnejšie, ako stoja náboje do kalašnikova. Jej autorka, Christina Lamb, je jednou z popredných britských zahraničných korešpondentiek a hlavnou zahraničnou korešpondetkou britských novín The Sunday Times. Je autorkou ďalších deviatich kníh, z ktorých viaceré sú medzinárodnými bestsellermi. Ako novinárka pracovala v mnohých konfliktných a vojnových zónach vo svete. V roku 1988 sa presťahovala do Pešávaru, odkiaľ pravidelne cestovala do Afganistanu, aby odtiaľ poskytovala spravodajstvo o boji mudžáhidov proti sovietskym okupantom.
