Supporting female athletes' mental health can be very challenging especially if they're in their teenage years. A lot of them are very good at hiding their struggles. Some have difficulty communicating their feelings with the people around them. And it's overwhelming. So, how can a mom support their daughter's mental health, especially in her struggles during her athletic journey?Let's get answers and shed light on that question today with the help of our special guest, Sadie Sutton. Sadie is a 19-year-old student-athlete from the Bay Area, currently studying psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. She hosts a mental health podcast called She Persisted, which she started after a year and a half of intensive treatment for severe depression and anxiety. In our latest podcast, Sadie shares helpful insights on how parents can better support their athletes' mental health based on her personal experience as a teenager. Here's a sneak peek into our conversation:What can parents be doing to help support their athlete's mental health? As a mom, you can support your daughter's mental health by learning the skills yourself and showing up as a good example for them. Observe and notice changes in their behavior and routine. And if they come to you for help, listen and validate their feelings by treating every emotional conversation seriously. To do that, you must take care of yourself.  Your daughter isn't the only one that needs to learn how to cope with these big, overwhelming experiences in life. The emotions that you feel as a result also need to be coped with and, and not dealt with, but worked through. Are there any common things that parents do that aren't beneficial and that we should avoid?Don't rush into problem-solving. Aim to be your daughter's safe space first. Take it one step at a time and help them have the skills to cope by standing up as a good example and having the skills to support mental health for yourself too. Invest in yourself.  Your daughter picks up on what you're modeling and you have to know how to support them too.Any form of mental discomfort or mental health problems would provoke powerful emotions in the parents. So it's advantageous if you can manage your emotions as they occur, whether they're feelings of guilt or shame, perplexity or overburden, sadness, loss, or loneliness. You can help provide the opportunity for your female athletes to have the skills and improve their mental health on their own, but it's not just them who have to learn these skills. You need it too. **********Helpful Links:Hang out with Sadie Sutton on social @shepersistedpodcast and learn more about working with her!Visit our podcast website for more on this episodeJoin our FREE training for Sports Moms - How To Strengthen Your Athlete Daughter's Mental Game So She Believes In Herself As Much As You DoThe BEST way to help us spread the word and get this information into the hands of millions of parents, coaches, and female athletes is by leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. One of my favorite things to do on SelfWork is to respond to your questions! The first is a reaction to a recent podcast from 19 year-old podcaster Sadie Sutton who was explaining her journey with depression and her parents' role in it. This listener wanted to know if I was following up with an interview with her parents – a great question actually. But no, that's not the plan. But I wanted to respond to some of her thoughts as that episode touched a sensitive and vulnerable place in her heart – and maybe it did yours as well. The second email is from someone whose partner has been diagnosed as BPD/bipolar and is looking for some support for herself. And the third from a listener who's turned to his family for affirmation – and keeps getting ignored or even criticized for it. His question – how do I become my own cheerleader? Today we're going to focus on how to help your teen with depression through an interview with a  great guest, 19 year-old Sadie Sutton, host of the podcast She Persisted. She was first diagnosed with depression when she was 13 and by the age of 14, had been hospitalized four times for severe depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Realizing things were going nowhere fast, her parents took her to McLean Hospital, a residential inpatient program. And it was there  - life changed. Why should you listen and share her story? Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 in the US. 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide and 9% have made attempts. Ohio State football player Harry Miller's revelations that he attempted suicide, shared his struggles with his coach and got help. He says, “This is not an issue reserved for the far and away,” wrote Miller. “It is in our homes. It is in our conversations. It is in the people we love.” Here are some of the salient points from Sadie: Her parents, especially her dad, didn't realize or even perhaps believe, that a teenager could be clinically depressed – and his efforts to “snap her out of it” or “tough love” made things worse. Prior to McLean, none of her therapists or the programs she entered asked for her commitment to the process of healing they proposed. In fact, they flat said that her stay would do her no good if she wasn't going to choose to do the work. And that requirement is what caused her to actually do the work of healing. Her parents took part of family therapy and learned a new way of talking about conflict, of expressing emotions, or negotiating, and of being aware of your impact on others. She's a huge fan of DBT 9 Dialectical Behavior Therapy and she talks about some of its basic tenets. But before we begin the interview, I'm so excited to introduce you to a new sponsor here at SelfWork! Magnesium Breakthrough. As always, I've tried it myself and will tell you what kind of results I've had! Sadie Sutton is the host of the She Persisted podcast. At 14 years old Sadie began a year and half intensive treatment for severe depression and anxiety. Now on the other side of her experience, she is a freshman at UPenn studying Psychology, Sadie was inspired to share her story with other teens who are also facing similar struggles and to be a relatable voice for those who are looking for resources. In this episode we discuss Sadie's experience, the importance of therapy, and the tools/ resources that she recommends for those who may be on their own path of personal growth. Key Takeaway: For parents with kids, truly impart the belief and the idea that you as a kid are worthy and deserving of love no matter what, and that your parents will be there no matter what you're feeling, what you've done, or your decisions, or your behaviors, they are still there to love and support you just as you are, and that's never going to change and I think that's huge. Invest in that relationship so it's at that point where if something does go wrong or someone is struggling, you've created that foundation to navigate it effectively. Instead of just being like, 'well if something goes wrong I HOPE they would come to me, and I HOPE they would ask me for support,' but feeling really good about like 'I know that if my kid's in a tough situation, or they are in a social situation they don't feel comfortable in, I KNOW that they will call me because they know I am here without judgment, and I will help them get out of the situation, if there is a consequence that needs to happen we'll navigate that later, but I'm just here to support them because I care about their safety. Really building that foundation for the relationship in a preventative measure, so if something does happen you're good to go, and you've taken the steps you can to give your relationship the best chance it can at navigating the situation effectively.
