At the age of 27, Dr. Peg Sandeen faced an impossible request. Her husband, John, who was dying from HIV/AIDS, told Peg that he couldn't stand the pain anymore and wanted her to help him end his life. It was the early 1990's though and there was no legal avenue for Peg to help John in his wish to die with the dignity he had in life. Peg went on to get both a Master's and Ph.D. in social work. Throughout that time, the memory of John's last wish motivated her to work towards changing the landscape for people facing the end of life. Dr. Sandeen is now the Executive Director of Death With Dignity, working in end-of-life advocacy and fighting for medical aid in dying laws across the U.S. In our conversation we discuss: Meeting and falling in love with John Getting the news of John's HIV diagnosis How Hannah and John talked with their daughter Hannah about her father's illness The shame and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS Caregiving for a dying husband as a young mother and wife The current state of right to die laws across the U.S. Moving from an intellectual to emotional understanding of grief Learning to support Hannah in her grief Dr. Sandeen's HuffPost article: My Husband Asked Me to Help Him Die. I Couldn't Do It - and My Life Changed Forever
EvoLLLution editor-in -chief and illumination host Amrit Ahluwalia is joined by Cathy Sandeen, President of California State University, East Bay. They discuss how Sandeen's experiences as a non-traditional student helped her build opportunities for others, and where the line between a business leader and a higher ed administrator is drawn.
In this episode, we speak with the CEO of Death With Dignity, Peg Sandeen, Ph.D., MSW—who has led the organization since 2005. Death with Dignity is a national leader in end-of-life advocacy and policy reform. "Our goal is to ensure people with terminal illness can decide for themselves what a good death means in accordance with their values and beliefs, and that should include having an option for death with dignity. We won't stop until that is a reality in every part of the country." This podcast is an extension of The 20-20 Grief Project, started in 2018 in response to Diane's desire to understand grief's lasting effects on our lives. Inspired by the phrase, “hindsight is 20-20,” this project features real people, real stories, and real grief. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diane-brennan/message

This 100 episode milestone was intentionally saved for the Buildin' A Brand Sale of the Sandeens, who have been life long friends and partners of mine and 12 years ago I actually helped them change from the NO BULL Sale we had for a decade to this new sale representing their own brand of cattle. A very fun listen as Scott and I discuss the history of this incredible sale being held December 11th, 2021
This episode features my good friend and former business partner Tim Sandeen as we reminisce about starting the No Bull sale over 20 years ago and how it has progressed into one of the premier bred female sales in existence known as the Buildin' A Brand sale, held there on the farm at Blakesburg, Ia December 11th, 2021.

We talk a lot about the high failure rates of consumer products. It's a tough road, and launching a hit product is a rare event. Michael Sandeen is an innovator who's exploded those odds—and he's now done it twice. Thirty-five years ago Michael created Spin Jammer, a uniquely spinnable flying disc that sold by the millions in big-box retail stores like Walmart, Toys R Us and K-Mart. Then, in late 2020, he introduced SearBQ, a cast-iron griddle and press combination for the barbecue, and it turned to be his second hit product. But SearBQ doesn't sell retail: it is only available direct-to-consumer (DTC), through what is now one of Shopify's top-selling new stores. It's very deliberately a different strategy, and Michael Sandeen has been quick to adopt other new ways for SearBQ. He started out with a successful Kickstarter campaign, and due to pandemic-induced supply and shipping challenges, launched his summer product in the middle of winter—the winter solstice to be exact—and too late to capture holiday sales. Sales exploded nonetheless, and Michael quickly found himself facing new challenges, battling retail giants for shipping freighter space and Amazon for packing materials. Growth would be the next frontier in his DTC experiment, and he'd need to pull out everything he's learned to manage it successfully. In this mouthwatering episode (we do talk about food more than we'd meant to—SearBQ has that effect) Michael Sandeen shares how he leveraged three-and-a-half decades of product design, manufacturing and selling experience to make launching a breakthrough product seem so easy. It ain't just spin and sizzle—but those things help! Here are some key-takeaways from this exciting and enlightening episode: How selling consumer products has transformed since the late '80s (2:00) Why a retail veteran decided to sell only direct-to-consumer (3:30) How one big idea and two burned steaks sparked SearBQ (5:04) Delighting ideal buyers and winning over the haters (8:00) Why Michael won't use Kickstarter for another consumer product, despite his success (12:47) Things product-makers need to know about Kickstarter marketing agencies (15:08) The biggest lesson from supply-chain challenges and inventory depletion (17:00) Where you CAN'T beat Walmart and Target (17:45) The importance of continuous improvement, even when you're crushing it (19:20) How beautiful product design and smart engineering are critical success triggers (20:00) The importance of putting the brand name front and center (22:15) Leaving room for buyers to surprise you (23:30) The (hands-down) best things SearBQ's inventor loves to cook on it (24:42) The innovation curve never ends (27:45) Buy the SearBQ Griddle & Press online: SearBQ.comThe Product Launch & Marketing Agency: GraphosProduct.com
Exercise, healthier coping methods, and safe group spaces can have an enormous effect on your life. Dr. Ashley Sandeen joins me to talk about how she rediscovered her self-worth, broke up with the scale, and shifted her mental perspective through group coaching. Alternative Ways to Process Emotions Practice thought work: Thoughts, Feelings, Actions, Results Exercise regularly Eat a healthy diet Find a safe space or collaborative support group About Dr. Ashley Sandeen Ashley Sandeen, DO is a Pediatric Intensivist and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in South Dakota. She is also a proud daughter, sister, wife, and mother to two energetic boys. Ashley grew up an athlete, as both a competitive swimmer and dancer with her local ballet company. As her medical education path began at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and on through her training in pediatrics and critical care at the University of Iowa, fitness and her own health became less of a priority. She has so enjoyed the journey to finding this part of herself again through yoga, strength training, and her peloton. She hopes to share her reinvigorated passion for health and wellness with her family and those she loves. Discovering Exercise and Thought Work Dr. Ashley Sandeen shares her childhood experiences as an athlete. But going through her demanding medical training and raising a family, Ashley lost a lot of that time she spent on herself. Not only that, she took a lot of her self-worth from the number on the scale. Working together, Ashley not only rediscovered her love of movement, especially strength training, but she also shifted her worth outside of that scale number. This shift was a huge benefit to her mentally, emotionally, and physically. Ashely also learned how to trust the process we used together. The biggest breakthrough for Ashley was learning how to shift her thoughts. By following a healthier thought model, her coping method shifted to thinking about a problem, solution, or exercise rather than reaching for food or shopping. Group Coaching Dynamics Group coaching added a unique element to training for Ashley. Having that group dynamic was an absolute gamechanger to her mentality, discourse, and enthusiasm in her personal development. Ashley says that her favorite aspect of group coaching is the safe, collaborative space with other women in similar professions. Safe space is essential, especially for women physicians who don't often have that outlet to work through their heavy thoughts and feelings. Finally, Ashley talks about how she's started using exercise again to help her process her emotions. She knows it's much healthier than her former coping mechanisms, and it allows her to relax and figure out what she's actually feeling. Homework for Women Physicians How are you building exercise into your routine this week? Do you process your own emotions while working out? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode What happens when you shift your worth outside of aesthetic measurements [7:45] Why you have to trust the process [9:15] Why you should learn how to deal with your emotions in a healthy way [17:00] The power of a safe, collaborative space [19:30] How to work through heavy thoughts and feelings [23:30] How exercise can help you process emotions [25:00] Quotes “My worth is really just something that's inherent. It's not defined by any of those numbers or any of that data.” [8:37] “I catch myself doing mental thought downloads multiple times per day and working through the different steps of my thoughts, feelings, actions, results. I think that's now just a way that my brain works. It's really fascinating to think about how that's changed over the last year. A lot of the buffering things I've used in the past are just not that exciting anymore. Food, shopping, or other things, I've now replaced with true thought work or exercise.” [23:21] “I love that we do the group coaching. I think that's really powerful for me and I know that a lot of other programs don't have that. We can learn a lot from each other, given any of our similarities. It gives us an opportunity to help each other. That's so uplifting and strengthening. It's the back and forth of people helping each other that's really powerful.” [26:33] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 48: Dr. Laura Demoya on Discovery Self-Worth Episode 57: Dr. Stierman on Breaking Up with the Scale Episode 53: Dr. Harita Raja on Mind-Body Transformation

Many businesses, especially startups, tend to use a variety of unfocused marketing strategies. As a consequence, they spend so much time and money but don't get effective results. The key is to focus on giving your target customers enough reasons to buy from you. Value proposition—when you're able to communicate your value clearly—teaches us precisely this. In this episode, Peter Sandeen discusses value proposition and how it can help businesses grow. He shares his experiences as a value proposition and marketing expert. He also advises business owners on how they can build an effective marketing strategy. Join us and learn more about the importance of learning how to communicate your value clearly in business success. About Peter Peter Sandeen is a value proposition and marketing message development expert. He helps business owners create a strong value proposition and a targeted marketing message for their businesses. Peter focuses on the fundamentals of effective marketing. His work also includes copywriting and conversion optimization. Communicate Your Value For Business Success Peter's Marketing Journey Peter's first focus was copywriting. He then decided to go into conversion optimization, which he did for a long time. In the course of his business, he realized that the ability to communicate your value always makes the biggest difference in the results. From then on, he wanted to help businesses have clear and strong value propositions. Biggest Challenge: The Mental Game For Peter, his biggest challenge was in his head. He struggled over his personal beliefs around success and money. Your beliefs and expectations drive your behaviour. It most commonly determines what your reality will be. The business side transitioned quite smoothly. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs The first step is to notice your limiting belief. It can be challenging because we don't see it as a limiting belief. Often, we see it as reality. The second step is to argue with it. Make your limiting belief completely ludicrous. Figure out the reasons why you should get rid of it. Come up with an alternative to replace it. Repeat the process until you've taken in the new one. Focus on Enjoying the Ride Peter lives by the quote, “Your goals should be so high that everyone around you thinks you're a bit insane.” When he sets a goal, he believes he will get there. He will keep working towards it. It doesn't make sense if you're only working for the outcome. You should enjoy the ride, not the place where you're going. Focus on how you're going to feel when you're working towards your goal. Consolidate your small goals and feel better about them. Success is a long series of problems and failures. Advice to Struggling Business Owners Focus. Many businesses fall into either one of the two categories of lack of focus. First is the lack of focus, which leads to trying too many things. This includes the lack of a specific marketing strategy. Second is the lack of focus of what you're trying to make people believe about you. This includes the lack of understanding of your value propositions. Value Proposition: How It Works Value proposition is about getting people to want to buy from you. To do this, you have to communicate your value clearly—give them reasons. It focuses on key ideas likely to make people want to buy particular products or services. The Three Things You Must Know There are three things you should focus on to have a clear and strong value proposition. First, how much do people want the product or services you're offering? How strong is the desire for that thing? Second, how unique is it? If people can find the same thing from others, it's not a reason to buy from you. Third, how believable is the idea? If people don't believe it, they're not going to buy it. What's Next for Peter? Peter is currently finishing a version of his website. He is also planning to launch a new training course. It will focus on helping people come up with the right marketing strategy for their businesses. Learning Marketing Strategy Learn about value proposition development. Instead of studying it yourself, find someone who can help you with your marketing strategy. Find a way to communicate it as a whole, and not just pieces of individual strategies. Tällä kertaa Loyalisticin perustajan Antti Pietilän videovieraana on erittäin mielenkiintoisella tavalla menestynyt markkinointikonsultti Peter Sandeen, jonka tarinasta moni saa varmasti inspiraatiota oman liiketoimintansa kehittämiseen. The beginnings of the professional field now known as student affairs can be traced to 1890 at Harvard University when then President Charles Eliot “asked LeBaron Russell Briggs, a young and popular English instructor, to serve as a ‘student dean’... to look after undergraduates” (Sandeen, 2004, p. 30). Later Deans of Men and Deans of Women were foundational in the professionalization of the field and the establishment of practices for higher education student services. They also formed professional associations, influenced early research on students, and urged the academy to consider the “whole student.” In short, what is now known as the Dean of Students could be considered the quintessential student affairs role.Today, much in the higher education landscape has shifted and the Dean of Students may be more central than ever. As compared to previous Deans, on many college and university campuses today's Dean of Students is now: responsible for addressing a more complex set of student concerns, beholden to new constituencies on and off campus, and experiencing oversight within a more strict regulatory and legal context. On this episode of Student Affairs Live, host Heather Shea will discuss with a large panel of current and recent Deans of Students how and why the Dean of Students role has changed and the leadership skills and professional competencies present-day Deans of Students need to be successful in this multifaceted role.
