As we close season 16, I have a guest today that goes all the way back to season one of the show—well, actually, for me personally he goes back way further than that, but more on that in a moment. Dr. Sparky Reardon was one of my very first guests on season one of I'd Rather Be Reading, and I encourage you to go back and listen to that episode from 2021 if you enjoy this conversation, which I know you will. I have said this on the show before—I am originally from Kansas, and when I moved to Oxford, Mississippi to go to graduate school and work at the University of Mississippi, better known as Ole Miss, I didn't know what to expect. Back when I was a very junior graduate assistant working in Greek life at Ole Miss, Sparky was my boss's boss's boss. Despite that, he was friendly, approachable, and quickly became like a father figure to me. I'm not alone. As his new book The Dean: Memoirs and Missives shows, Sparky tends to have that paternal effect on the hundreds of thousands of students he interacted with during his time as Dean of Students at Ole Miss. When it comes to Oxford and Ole Miss, Sparky is about as legendary as they come. He's, in my mind anyway, on the level of the Mannings or any other beloved Ole Miss figure. I met Sparky in 2009, and we have kept in touch even after I moved from Oxford in 2013. We went out for brunch maybe a couple of years ago, and it was like going to brunch with a famous person for how many people came up to the table to say hello. He is like everyone's favorite mayor, minus the politics of it all. I think you listeners will enjoy Sparky's Southern drawl and his endless stories, many of which are captured in The Dean. I stayed up late—a rarity for me these days—and could not put this book down. Sparky is originally from Clarksdale, Mississippi, in the Mississippi Delta, if you're not familiar; after serving at Ole Miss for years, he became Dean of Students in 2000, a position he held until his retirement in 2014. You can imagine the thousands of stories Sparky collected in that role over all of those years, from the hilarious to the tragic. He is a deeply, deeply talented writer—more than your average memoirist—and myself and so many others have been begging him to write this book for years. I am so glad it's finally out in the world, and I'm thrilled to talk to him about it. When he's not writing bestselling books and going on tour to support it, he enjoys his porch in Taylor, Mississippi—which is a beautiful porch, I might add—a good cigar, a sip of scotch, and the occasional poker game. You'll love him, just like we all do. The Dean: Memoirs and Missives by Dr. Sparky Reardon

The data is quite conclusive: young people around the world are struggling. Research and books such as The Anxious Generation highlight the negative effects of technology and social networks on our students. We also know that two common themes in international schools are academic pressure and high expectations for students applying to university. On a more positive note, we are seeing a growing trend of schools placing greater emphasis on a holistic approach to supporting students. In this interview, we learn how the Dean of Students at one school helps lead and coordinate efforts to stay ahead of these trends. We speak with Andy Vaughan, a Dean of Students at an international school, about his role in providing leadership to help students develop the life skills needed to overcome struggles and chart their pathway toward full and healthy lives.Andy is a Kiwi who has been living overseas with his family for the past 20 years teaching and leading in South East Asia. Currently working at the High School Dean of Students at International School Bangkok, Andy was previously the Athletics Director at ISB and in the past has taught Physical Education, Science, Health and Outdoor Education. He is passionate about establishing systems in schools that proactively ensure we support student well being to ensure all students feel like they belong and are cared for.Our guiding questions were: “What does a Dean of Students do? How has the role of Dean of Students evolved over time? What trends are you observing around this role in international schools going forward?”Here are a few of the topics covered in this episode:The impetus for and evolution of the Dean of Students role at Andy's schoolA breakdown of the job descriptionThe importance of using data to support studentsLessons learned from the roleObservations about digital wellnessAdvice on how to move into leadership positionsTrends in the role of Dean of Students and in international schools in generalResources shared in this episode: Mario Education Google Looker StudioParenting in the Digital Age & Family Wellness Workshop (Slideshow) The show was recorded on June 22, 2025.Categories: School Life | Parenting | Wellness Remember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information and consider joining our Patreon community at patreon/educatorsgoingglobal!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube. Send us a Text Message.Billy and I discuss whether it was better to endure two years of horrible behavior from a student for the lovely letter they wrote about you at the end of your time together, or is it better to work with a compliant student who was just a nice kid the whole time? We also discuss his love of Pearl Jam. Rebranding yourself and a trip of a lifetime. ***** Hello! My name is Billy, and along with my good friend Brian, we host The Mindful Midlife Crisis, a podcast for people navigating the complexities and possibilities of life's second half. We are just a couple of average dudes who share our life experiences--both the good and the bad--in an effort to help us all better understand how we can enjoy and make the most of the life we have left to live in a more meaningful way. I started The Mindful Midlife Crisis podcast because we want to normalize and prioritize conversations around mental health. My personal life is often a complicated one for people to understand. I'm 43 years old, have never been married, don't have any kids, and I don't have much interest in either (though I would consider marriage if the right person came along). Many of my friends are involved in more traditional relationships or marriages with the picket fence and the 2.5 kids, but that's just not a life that interests me. I'd rather paddleboard and travel! I have worked as an educator for 20+ years as an English teacher and a dean of students, so I have firsthand experience working with students of different backgrounds and learning styles. I use my experience as a teacher and my passion for fitness in my side-gig as a NASM certified personal trainer. Because both physical and mental health is important to me, I am also a practitioner of mindfulness. As I mentioned before, a passion of mine that combines fitness and mindfulness is paddleboarding. I simply love the feeling of paddling my board atop the water while being one with nature. I have paddle boarded in all five Great Lakes, and my new goal is to paddleboard in every ocean and off the coast of every continent! As a lifelong baseball fan, I made it a point to see a baseball game at every MLB stadium, and I'm currently up to date with all of the current MLB stadiums! I strongly encourage you to check out PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Oracle Park in San Francisco, Target Field in Minneapolis, and Camden Yards in Baltimore! I am also a die-hard Pearl Jam fan! I have seen Pearl Jam 49 times in nine countries, and I have blogged about my travels following the band. I am a fan of live music in general, but there's something a little more special about attending a Pearl Jam concert with other die-hard fans! We really are a Jamily! Lastly, I'm embarking on a new adventure in 2021-2022. I am taking a year-long leave from my job as a dean of students to pursue other passions in my life--namely, traveling. My plan is to spend five months in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea; unfortunately due to CoVid-19, I may have to adjust my travel plans, but I'm greatly looking forward to my next set of adventures!Website: https://www.mindfulmidlifecrisis.comPodcast: https://www.mindfulmidlifecrisis.com/podcastTwitter: @mindfulmidlife******Video of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/gWxltxMrHo4Have a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©20Support the Show.

About Chapel: The focus for this year in Chapel is to simply belong to Jesus and serve Jesus. The purpose of the fall Chapel messages is to challenge the members of the college family to take on the character of Christ to BE like Jesus, so that people can see Jesus in us. Then the emphasis of the spring Chapel messages will encourage our campus community to live out our lives in a Christlike way so that others see Jesus working through us. We are seeking to be a discipleship community where each one of us simply seeks to be Jesus' for the sake of others to see, know, and belong to God. Learn more at www.boisebible.edu.
The Sneaker Principal Podcast #100 - Dean of Students My First Day Teaching In NYCSupport the show
I read today that Harvard University hired its first black Dean of Students. While some are accustomed to celebrating such achievements, I must confess that I am not always one of them. I am very happy for Stephen Ball, believe me. I am sure he worked extremely hard for his position. But there's something about black people celebrating our acknowledgements from racist institutions that really concerns me. Let me ask you a question: Do white people celebrate when they are the first to be accepted into an HBCU? Why do we celebrate when they accept us, but they fully expect us to accept them. The reality, I hate to say this, is that we spend so much time trying to be accepted into other spaces that we don't spend much time building spaces of our own. This is a significant issue in The Black Community. That's my topic on today's podcast, but I want to do it in a way that I show full respect to Stephen and his accomplishments. His new opportunity says more about Harvard than it says about him.
Bethany and Rachel describe, dissect, and define the many layers of Diversity. Their discussion provides a broader perspective on diversity, access, and how we all benefit from having additional insights into how we can all proceed as a door opener or door slammer.
