The CDB Crew is back for the finale of their fourth season where they talk about the graphic novel from Mexican author and artist, Edgar Camacho, Onion Skin. They discuss the story telling devices used, the panel work, and the Camacho's ability to stay away from trope pits that more experienced authors easily fall down. They also discuss translations and whether chilaquiles are better with red or green sauce. The group also gets into the recently announced Eisner nominations, Peow Studio closing and Sarah Gaydos stepping down as EIC of Oni/Lion Forge. Also at the last moment, Brian remembered that there is an excellent Kickstarter started by legendary editor Shelly Bond that he donated to and wanted everyone to else to chuck in a buck if they are able to. Last the Crew discuss the ill-timing of a Fables adaptation and the Pulitzer Prize Committee choosing not to present the award for Best Editorial Cartoonist to any of the nominees this year. Other comics discussed this episode are Coyote Doggirl by Lisa Hanawalt (Drawn and Quarterly); Namesake by Isabelle Melancon; and Luunarbaboon. Our first guest started her career at Wildstorm; later, she moved to IDW to become a group editor, editing books like Star Trek or Jem and the Holograms; She started at Oni Press at Editorial Director of Licensed Publishing, but it wasn't too long before she was promoted to her current position of Editor-in-chief. Our second guest started at Dark Horse as a publicist, but later on she became an editor for the company, where she worked on many books but focused mostly on their horror books. Years later she joined Lion Forge Comics, working on the Catalyst Prime line of superhero books, When Lion Forge became a part of Oni Press, She moved to Oni as a Senior Editor. I am talking, of course, about two of the best editors in comics, SARAH GAYDOS and SHAWNA GORE!!! We've talked about life, the craft, what makes a good pitch, and project, and what doesn't, about how to stand out for editors, and reasons why they wouldn't publish you, but help you get a job with another company... lots and lots of tips today. A real masterclass by Sarah and Shawna!!! #DialogosdeComic #SarahGaydos #ShawnaGore #OniPress #NoMaleButTheHost
Sarah Gaydos is the Editor-in-Chief of One Press, with a long career behind her in the comic industry, including work at IDW and at DC Entertainment (and Wildstorm within it!). Through that she has incredible experience with corporate-owned characters and licensed publishing. In this episode she joins me to discuss this aspect of the industry and Oni’s place in the wider comic book industry.

Great to have Sarah back. Lots of terrific IDW trek comics are happening now. The Star Trek Boldy Go series set in the JJ Abrahms film universe started a new multi universe story called IDIC. She also previews the Discovery prequel series focusing on T'Kuvma and The Kingon Deathship crew cominng later this month, and more. Plus we cant help talking about the new streaming series, with the fall hiatus starting next week. Good thing there's plenty of quality IDW trek comics to get us to the Jan half of the season.

Earlier this month the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards were announced at the Comic-Con International website, and as Andy and Derek like to do every year, they're devoting a full episode of The Comics Alternative to a discussion of the nominations. On this week's show, the Two Guys give their impressions of the various nominees, both as a whole and on a category-by-category basis, making observations and trying to understand any trends underlying this year's selections. However, Derek and Andy resist the urge to play armchair quarterbacks, so they don't second-guess the six-member panel of judges or focus on what they would have chosen if they had been on the selection committee. As diligent comics scholars, they judicial and discerning in their commentary. At the same time, they don't shy away from pointing out a few inconsistencies and a few head-scratchers when trying to make sense of this year's nominations. You can find a complete list of the 2017 Eisner Award nominees below. So as you listen to this week's episode, please feel free to scroll down and follow along! In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson welcome Sarah Gaydos and Mike Johnson from IDW to the show!
