Turn the strangeness dial up to 11 for this one, y'all.  In this episode we talk about how we are navigating situations where beliefs we once held to be “truth” have evolved.  As our experiences and knowledge of the known (and unknown) expand, it is only logical that our belief systems shift and morph as well. Right? One example is the topic of PAST Lives. Well, if “time” is simply a human construct so we can have an experience of a life lived (birth thru death), then the experiences we remember during QHHT are really parallel realities or dimensions that are happening simultaneously.  And we are simply tapping into its frequency during that session.

It's been a few months since the release of a new LTA podcast…a lot has happened in my life that meant I had to stand back from the show – not for the first time in its (nearly) 15 year existence….yet, I come back because discussing music with fellow music lovers, and putting those discussions into your earholes is something I love doing. With that said……. ...welcome to episode 192 of Love That Album Podcast. Music is supposed to bring us happiness and joy. Sometimes though, it's created as a form of catharsis for songwriters or performers. In 1998, Mark Everett's band / collective Eels released their second LP Electro-Shock Blues. Everett had faced truly difficult times with the death of his sister Liz from suicide, and the death of his mother from cancer. His father had died several years earlier. Mark barely knew him as he was absorbed in his work as a quantum physicist. A genius in his field, but reportedly, the opposite as a father. To mentally cope with his awful situation, Everett wrote the songs for Electro-Shock Blues that deal with what was in his head and what was in his sister's head leading up to her death. It's not a cathartic record in the same way that the Lennon Plastic Ono Band is – there's no Janov screaming, and Everett's music is often wistful even if his stories are not. It's written with nuance and is direct – is that a contradiction in terms? There is catharsis, but not in a tear-down the walls way. Electro-Shock Blues is not a joyful listen, but it's not ugly either. It's a series of aural vignettes about a man coming to terms with tragedy. It's musically dark but it's also playful at times. I didn't feel like making this a conversation with a fellow music lover – this episode is me going through the album's history, and unpacking what Everett is doing, both lyrically and musically, and trying to determine his mental state at the time. To some, this may seem like a peculiar way for me to re-enter podcasting, but it was a show I felt compelled to do. I hope you get something out of it. Parallel Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans is a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings. The surviving lives, contain twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pair consisting of one Greek and one Roman, as well as four unpaired, single lives.Plutarch was not concerned with writing histories, as such, but in exploring the influence of character, good or bad, on the lives and destinies of famous men. The first pair of lives the Epaminondas-Scipio Africanus no longer exists, and many of the remaining lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae and/or have been tampered with by later writers.His Life of Alexander is one of the five surviving secondary or tertiary sources about Alexander the Great and it includes anecdotes and descriptions of incidents that appear in no other source. Likewise, his portrait of Numa Pompilius, an early Roman king, also contains unique information about the early Roman calendar.In this copyright expired 11-volume translation from the Loeb Classical library, the order of the paired lives is rearranged to present the Greek lives in chronological order. In 2019, Hunt revived her role as Jamie Buchman for another season of the hit show MAD ABOUT YOU opposite Paul Reiser. In 18th century America, this book was second in popularity only to the Bible.It was a favorite of many thinkers and leaders throughout history, including Emerson, Napoleon, Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and even President Truman.Yet, you probably haven't read it.It's Plutarch's Parallel Lives.If you're not familiar with Plutarch's Lives, you're in for a treat, as today's episode offers a great intro. My guest, Alex Petkas, found that even though he's a former classicist and professor, Plutarch's Lives is still a tough read, which is why he started a podcast, The Cost of Glory, to make it more accessible to people. He does the same thing on today's episode, sharing the background on Plutarch's set of biographies and its major themes. Alex explains why Plutarch thought that biography was a powerful way to transmit morals and how the Homeric virtue he had in mind differed from that of just having good, upstanding character. Alex then gives us a taste of Plutarch as we discuss the lives of two obscure Greek and Roman figures.
