Hello! And welcome back to The Dana Gould Hour Podcast. It's the holidays! The election is over and, although I haven't been paying much attention to politics, I'm sure everything turned out grea... WHHHHHAAAAAA?!?!?!?!?! But I'm still me and you're still you, so let's be who we are and do what we do.  Bob Fingerman is here. Bob is an old pal, and one of the finest comic artists in the biz, Bob gained fame in the 90's with his comic Minimum Wage which was one of my favorites of the era, along with Dan Clowes' Eightball and Peter Bagge's Hate. Bob has a new graphic novel out called Printopia and a new book that's sort of a career retrospective to date (anyway, he's still a young man) called That's Some Business You're In. We'll be talking about that, his days writing for Cracked and then later MAD working with Harvey Kurtzman, all that and more, Bob Fingerman.  Burt Kearns is here. Burt had visited us before discussing his books The Show Won't Go On as well as his biography of the great and fascinating Lawrence Tierney. But his new book holds a special fascination for me, and probably you if you're listen to this podcast with any regularity. It's called SHEMP! And it's about Shemp Howard, The great Stooge. People think Shemp replaced Curly. He did not! Curly replaced Shemp, and then Shemp re-replaced Curly after that. But it's not just Stooge lore, although there's a lot. It's also about showbiz in the 1930's and 1940's, the experience of American immigrants and how they helped define our culture and so much more. It's a great read. It has a forward by your friend and mine, Drew Freidman. SHEMP! With an exclamation point. https://www.DanaGould.com

What can we say about Peter Bagge? Maybe that he has one of the most unique art styles and careers of any creator we've had on the show? Yeah, that sounds right. The cartoonist with the most elastic, frenetic figures came up in the world of underground comics and alternative papers in New York City. Peter found a kindred spirit in R. Crumb, who gave him assignments (including the editorial reins) in Weirdo. He struck it big with two solo series at Fantagraphics: Neat Stuff and Hate, the latter of which is probably his most well known work. Peter went on to work on Yeah! (with Gilbert Hernandez), Sweatshop, and Other Lives for DC, his versions of Spider-Man and Hulk for Marvel, and a few projects at Dark Horse. He's also dabbled in comics journalism. What a neat guy!You can follow Peter on Instagram @pcbagge and X @PeterBagge1.Support the Show.

EK On the Go

Join us in this episode for a conversation with Sarah Eichhorn, daughter of writer Dennis P. Eichhorn, known for his adult-oriented autobiographical comic book series “Real Stuff.” With reminiscences echoing a central premise of her father's work—that truth is stranger than fiction—Sarah recounts his birth and orphanhood at Montana State Prison. Sarah later talks of her fight to keep her infant child, which succeeded in part thanks to her father's intervention. With healthy measures of wit and soul, the younger Eichhorn's tales transport us to the Northwest's creative milieu of the 70's, 80's and 90's through which her iconoclastic father traveled. With a cast of colorful characters including comic book illustrators Peter Bagge, Pat Moriarity and Triangle-Slash among others, we learn of Dennis' lauded editorial work for The Rocket in Seattle and, later, for Libertarian publisher Loomponics Unlimited, based in Port Townsend, WA. As if a testament to the fullness of her father's capacious life, Sarah friendships encompass generations of talented artists: Anchoring this episode's soundscape are the polyrhythmic laments of Jason Webley (originally of Everett, WA) and the pensive ballads of singer songwriter Eilen Jewell (originally from Boise, ID). We'll also enjoy archival recordings of Dennis P. Eichhorn sharing stories. Warning: This episode's content is more suitable for adult listeners. "My life may not seem that vanilla, but it could have been a lot more wild; I've lived on the side of caution because of a lot of his escapades." ~Sarah Eichhorn

EK On the Go

Join us in this episode for a conversation with Eric Reynolds, Vice-President of Seattle-based publisher Fantagraphics. Headquartered in Seattle's Maple Leaf community—with their Bookstore & Gallery in the industrial Georgetown neighborhood—Fantagraphics has quietly produced a stunning body of work over the last 40+ years. Their genres span alternative comics, classic comic strip anthologies, manga, magazines and graphic novels. The imprint's stable of contemporary comics creators includes Jessica Abel, Peter Bagge, Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Mary Fleener, Roberta Gregory, Mega Kelso, Manny Murphy, Joe Sacco, and Chris Ware. They also include the enigmatic artistry of Jim Woodring as well as the magical realism of the Hernandez Brothers. Eric's passion for comics brought him to Seattle in the early 1990's at age 20 to intern at Fantagraphics, whose owners soon promoted him to publicist. In this podcast, Eric explores synergies between the fledgling alternative comics movement and Sub Pop Records, as well as independent media (including The Rocket & The Stranger) during this watershed period. These and other stories reveal Eric's purposeful stewardship of a vulnerable yet resolute enterprise through untold business obstacles, elevating comics into a mature art form along the way. For Eric, Fantagraphics remains a labor of love. “Sometimes it's a matter of be careful what you ask for; But it really is incredible to see comics taken seriously as art in a way that we could only dream about, years ago.” ~ Eric Reynolds

In these stories and others, Bagge presents a typical '80s suburban family in all its dysfunctional glory, laying the groundwork for the likes of Married ... With Children and The Simpsons. But Bagge balances the caustic family dynamics with faithful depictions of the teenage experience and explorations of such issues as religion and the plight of the working suburban mom, employing a wonderfully expressive and exaggerated cartooning style influenced by MAD Magazine and Looney Tunes shorts, among others. Third time's the charm! Cartoonist Pete Bagge returns to talk about his new comic biography of Rose Wilder Lane, Credo (Drawn & Quarterly), and we get into the thematic ties of his three biographies — Lane, Margaret Sanger, and Zora Neale Hurston — and how he learned the biographer's art over the course of those works. We talk about how he discovered Rose Wilder Lane's walk-the-walk libertarianism, her transition in and out of socialism, the likelihood that she co-wrote her mother's Little House series of books, Pete's own history with libertarianism and the uncomfortable questions he'd ask his parents, and why his own biography would be a lot less interesting than those of his subjects. We also discuss his writing and drawing process and how he structured these books, why he'd prefer to produce comics in installments and how economics mitigate against that model, how trying to write for TV made his comics writing more concise, and why he's likely sticking to shorter biography comics for a while. Oh, and we talk about his '80s/'90s editorship of the anthology Weirdo, how he followed R. Crumb, and the artists he pissed off as well as the ones to whom he gave their first shot, and the memoir he's written but has yet to draw. • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Earlier this month the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards were announced at the Comic-Con International website, and as Andy and Derek like to do every year, they're devoting a full episode of The Comics Alternative to a discussion of the nominations. On this week's show, the Two Guys give their impressions of the various nominees, both as a whole and on a category-by-category basis, making observations and trying to understand any trends underlying this year's selections. However, Derek and Andy resist the urge to play armchair quarterbacks, so they don't second-guess the six-member panel of judges or focus on what they would have chosen if they had been on the selection committee. As diligent comics scholars, they judicial and discerning in their commentary. At the same time, they don't shy away from pointing out a few inconsistencies and a few head-scratchers when trying to make sense of this year's nominations. You can find a complete list of the 2017 Eisner Award nominees below. Comics Alternative Interviews: Back with Peter Bagge

The Two Guys are pleased to have Peter Bagge back on The Comics Alternative. His new book Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurston Story comes out this week from Drawn and Quarterly. It is another in Bagge's recent series of historical and biographical comics, following his brief biography of Isabel Paterson (appearing in Reason in 2010), Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story (2013), and Founding Father Funnies (2016). In this interview, Derek talks with Peter about the genesis of this project, what brought him to the writings and personality of Huston, the socio-political contexts surrounding Hurston's work, and his research efforts in compiling the graphic biography. Fire!! is, in many ways, a companion piece to Woman Rebel, in that both focus on iconoclastic female figures, and their stories are told through an episodic, almost snap-shot, manner of narration. Although Peter and Derek spend the majority their time discussing Zora Neale Hurston, they also cover some of Peter's other works, such as his Founding Father Funnies collection, last year's Neat Stuff boxed set, and the possibilities of a similar treatment with Hate and other Bradly family stories. Be sure to check out Peter Bagge's other appearances on The Comics Alternative: the 2015 interview at Dallas Fan Expo the 2013 interview for the blog the 2013 interview at HeroesCon

Interviews - Peter Bagge

While Derek attended this year's Fan Expo Dallas, he had the opportunity to talk with Peter Bagge not once, but twice! On the Saturday of the con Peter was kind enough to sit down for a lengthy interview -- about 30 minutes -- in-between fans, commissions, and signings. Although their back-and-forth was substantial, there were subject matters that they didn't get to cover on that first day. So they decided to follow up with another interview on Sunday. What you'll hear in this podcast episode is an edited result of two-days-worth of recorded conversation at Fan Expo Dallas. Among other topics, Derek asks Peter about the response to 2013's Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story, and that leads to a discussion of the creator's next project, a graphic biography of Zora Heale Hurston. Peter shares his experiences researching for the book, the politics underlying Hurston's previous biographers, and the challenges of putting the writer's life -- the palatable as well as the problematic -- into comics form. They also discuss Peter's recent work on IDW's Garbage Pail Kids Puketacular and the connections between card collecting, comics, and pornography. In addition, Derek talks with Peter about the release of Sweatshop, a series that was originally published by DC Comics in 2003, and then just recently collected in trade through Fantagraphics. It's the story of a newspaper cartoonist and his disgruntled assistants, and Peter explains that this is a title that he will probably never revisit, especially due to the fact that strip cartooning (at least in newspapers) is, unfortunately, a dying form. And the jury's still out on whether or not Peter will return to one of his most iconic creations, Buddy Bradley. Derek is a huge fan of Hate and the Hate Annual, and he specifically asks Bagge if there's any future for Buddy and Lisa. Although that fact remains uncertain -- as is a return of Guy Krause from 2012's Reset -- what is more assured is a collection of Peter's Founding Father Funnies that will be coming out through Dark Horse Comics in the near future. Peter even shares with Derek news that his Neat Stuff comics will be collected in nice archival editions through Fantagraphics. But the conversation doesn't stop with the comics. They spend a lot of time talking about Peter's love of pop music -- like Derek, he is a big Beach Boys and (especially) Brian Wilson buff -- and especially his work as a musician in The Action Suits, and more recently the band Can You Imagine? In fact, you can hear clips from the band's 2012 CD, Romance!, in this episode. Derek has previously interviewed Peter twice before -- first, at the 2013 HeroesCon  and then for the blog around the release of Woman Rebel -- but this time around, they cover entirely new territory. There's a lot packed into this conversation, so give it a listen. And a great big thanks to Peter Bagge for taking the time and being on the podcast!

Episode 128 - Reviews of Tex the Lonesome Rider, Sweatshop, and Criminal Special Edition

This week, Derek and Andy W. discuss recent titles that span the genre spectrum. First they look at the new release from Dark Horse, the English-language release of Claudio Nizzi and Joe Kubert's Tex the Lonesome Rider. Based on the famous American Western character created in 1948 by Giovanni Luigi Bonelli, this book was originally released in Italian and is now being published in the states in a beautiful hardbound volume. (Dark Horse had released the first part of this story in 2005 as Four Killers, Vol. 1: The Bartlett Brothers, and that same year SAF Comics published the entire story in English, but those books are long out of print.) The guys approach Nizzi's treatment of Tex Willer as a classic Western, but one that isn't afraid to delve into the darker, violent side of the genre. In fact, Andy argues that much of the story, underscored by Kubert's art, owes a debt to noir narrative, and that one could arguably read this as Western noir. Although Tex is a famous figure in Italian comics, he is much less known in the United States, and indeed, both Derek and Andy admit that before this new release, they didn't know much of anything about Tex and his history. But Tex the Lonesome Rider is the prefect introduction to the character, meticulously rendered by the legendary Kubert, and the guys hope that there will be more translated Tex stories to come. Next, they review the new collection from Peter Bagge, Sweatshop (Fantagraphics). Although this book was just released, Sweatshop isn't a new comic. It was first serialized by DC Comics during the last half of 2003, but it was canceled after only six issues. Now, the short-lived series is finally collected in a trade paperback, and if you're not familiar with the work of Peter Bagge, then this would be the prefect place to start. Reminiscent of Bagge's classic Hate, the story revolves around a self-centered and crotchety newspaper cartoonist and the young people he has working for him on the strip. Illustrated not only by Bagge, but also by Stephen DeStafano, Johnny Ryan, Stephanie Gladden, and Bill Wray, Sweatshop is a humorous, and at times sarcastically biting, look at the comics industry and the personalities that strut across its stage. Finally, Andy and Derek leap into Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's Criminal Special Edition (Image), a one-shot oversized comic that takes us back into the creators' seminal world of noir. Released to help draw attention to the new editions of Criminal published through Image -- the original series came out through Marvel's Icon imprint between 2006 and 2011 -- this special edition is also an homage to the kind of sword-and-sorcery magazine-sized comics that appeared in the 1970s. The result is not only a curious pairing of genres, but more significantly, a narratively sophisticated return to a noir world that would eventually lead to such titles as Fatale and The Fade Out. If you're a fan of crime comics, Criminal Special Edition is essential reading.

Hi! This week's podcast features an interview with legendary cartoonist PETER BAGGE (Hate, Apocalypse Nerd), who wrote a new graphic novel about Margaret Sanger called WOMAN REBEL. This is a lovely interview with a wonderful man! Also, Julie tells Banksy to not let the door hit his tush on the way out of New York City, complains about Turner Classic Movies and Drew Barrymore's undereducated introduction of some of the films on that there channel, half-recaps THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN, and explains the depths of procrastination that one has to get to in order to put a bowtie on one's cat. Plus: popsicle tangents! Lysol as a reasonably safe douching method, if you use the right proportions! And the presumed personality traits behind a man with a law degree who holds a full time job at DC Comics. Enjoy this show, because we could all get hit by cars tomorrow and die.

Andy and Derek are back for another of their Point One episodes, and this time they're on the floor of HeroesCon, taking place on June 7-9 in Charlotte, NC. Andy was there for the entire weekend — as is his annual tradition — and Derek was able to get there for Sunday, the last day of the con. So the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics were able to join forces and leap into action, schmoozing and cavorting and interviewing a number of creators/publishers in Artist Alley. You'll hear in this show some of the fruits of their encounters, brief conversations with John Layman, Duffy Boudreau, Peter Bagge, Evan Dorkin, Eric Powell, Andy Hirsch, Jim Ottaviani, and Maris Wicks, among others. Also on this episode Andy shares some of his memorable HeroesCon encounters, and Derek reveals his suspect use of the word “wacky.” A great time was had by all, and we hope you enjoy listening to some of the fun the Two Guys had this past weekend.
