In this episode of Hit Rewind, hosts Michael and John explore the diverse landscape of comic books from 1999. While Marvel faced significant financial struggles, leading to the sale of many assets, DC Comics thrived with innovative and captivating narratives. The discussion delves into Marvel's attempts to stay afloat despite bankruptcy, including the relaunch of iconic titles and the introduction of new miniseries like Moon Knight and Black Widow. On the other hand, DC Comics soared with compelling arcs such as "No Man's Land" and the return of the Justice Society. Notable runs from creators like Grant Morrison in the "JLA" series and Chuck Dixon in the Bat-related titles showcased the vibrant creativity driving DC during this period. Additionally, the episode touches on independent comics and the emergence of Wildstorm's America's Best Comics, further illustrating the dynamic shifts within the comic book industry at the turn of the millennium.
Episode 21 of Matt and Mike (and I guess Melissa) Read Comics takes place in the world of Planetary. A byproduct of the early days of Image, and Wildstorm in particular, Planetary ranks as one of the most unique comics that we've ever read. Masterfully crafted storytelling by Warren Ellis and the late John Cassady with deeply flawed yet likable characters, Planetary truly takes you on a ride. You aren't immediately certain where that ride is taking you, but as the layers eventually fall back and the story truly begins to blossom and connect, you see why this series is so well regarded. We had a lot of fun reading this one.

For years, Wizard magazine reported on the promise of a Gen13 animated film based on the Wildstorm comic drawn by J. Scott Campbell and written by Brandon Choi. The director came from Batman The Animated Series, the cast included Mark Hamill and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus there was plenty of titilating imagery to be had. Artist Dustin Nguyen joins the show to talk about his career and his upcoming crowdfunded art book, The Art of Descender. Nguyen discusses convention life, what he's working on these days, working with other publishers, his early days as an artist, figuring out your art, the impact of influences, watercolors, breaking in, learning on the job, his Wildstorm experience, comfort's place in his career, working with Jeff Lemire, the origins of The Art of Descender, what's going into the book, his pencils, how he decided what to include, crowdfunding, how the role of an artist has changed, what keeps him excited about art and comics, and more.
Today I'm joined by comics writer Joe Casey. Joe's comics cv includes writing for big Marvel properties like Cable and the X-Men, Automatic Kafka for Wildstorm, Wildcats, Superman for DC, or the Eisner Nominated Godland. Beyond the realm of comics, he's a part of the Man of Action Entertainment Studio who created the wildly successful Ben 10 and Generator Rex cartoon franchises and they are the producers and story editors for Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble for Disney, and let's not forget Big Hero 6 either. He is now turning his attention towards revitalizing the Hanna Barbera cartoon classic Jonny Quest for Dynamite Entertainment in comics form, or at least for the purposes of our chat today so don't get too excited cartoon fans, with artist Sebastian Piriz. Admittedly, not all of these cartoon IP relaunches have impressed but Jonny Quest is damn good from what I've seen, not reinventing the characters but providing a platform for them to adapt into a modern structure and to explore the family and cultural dynamics inherent to the series. Pick it up. From the publisher Get ready to climb aboard the Sea Quest and embark for adventure once more! Legendary boy explorer JONNY QUEST is back, along with his intrepid scientist dad Dr. Benton Quest, bodyguard "Race" Bannon, adopted brother Hadji, and all the rest of the beloved cast from the classic animated series! Launching out of its issue #0 prelude story in Dynamite's 2024 Free Comic Book Day release, this action-packed new title begins where the show left off in 1964, but things quickly take a turn for the uncanny as they team returns from an experiment at sea to their home base in Palm Key, only to discover that the once-familiar landscape is now strangely, disquietingly different! Superstar writer JOE CASEY (Superman, Ben 10) and powerhouse artist SEBASTIAN PIRIZ (We Ride Titans, Deadweights) join together to bring you the brand-new tales of Jonny and the Quest team that the world has been waiting for - all enhanced by fully frameable covers from CHAD HARDIN, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, TOM RANEY, BOB LAYTON, and RICHARD PACE! Writer/artist Dustin Weaver joins the show to chat about his career, path in comics, and his work on Image Comics releases like Paklis and 1949. Weaver discusses his night owl nature, maintaining a schedule, following whims, embracing himself, revisiting old work in Paklis, when he first got into comics, how his interest in the medium has evolved, being creatively autobiographical, his Wildstorm internship, what he learned at Marvel, the origins of Paklis, doing his own thing, existing on multiple sides, how he decides what to include, his creative process, writing but not drawing, continuing to evolve, and more.
We're digging way too deep into the forgotten 1993 Image lineup in this episode. Do you remember Union by Mark Texeira and Mike Heisler? If you do, this episode is for you. We take a look at the initial four-issue miniseries that took almost a year to come out! Let's party like it's 1993 again, or something like that. If DC hadn't bought up WildStorm, Union would have been the perfect mascot for the Image Comics union. If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Superstar penciler Jim Lee adopted less revolutionary rhetoric than some of his fellow Image founders after leaving Marvel Comics, but he became one of the most successful of the group, growing his WildStorm Productions imprint into a publishing empire. WildC.A.T.s, Lee's first Image offering from 1992, takes his and co-creator Brandon Choi's love of spy fiction and channels it into something that would have looked very familiar to fans of Lee's X-Men. We look at WildC.A.T.s' expansive cast and ask, “How much mysterious backstory is too much mysterious backstory?” We'll also look at Lee's continued career at Image, his brief return to Marvel, and finally on up to today as head honcho of DC Comics.
This is First Aid Spray - a Resident Evil podcast by fans, for fans! We return to Comic Club, we return to Code Veronica, we return to WildStorm… sort of? The official English translation of the Tinhangse manhua adaptation takes us through the video game in painstaking detail but manages to offer some real variety - for better and worse. What do we love about the manhua art style? How well does this game adapt the Code Veronica story? Is Alfred a walking meme? And can Chris Redfield be stopped?!
