Thirty years ago, Superman died. Then, he came back. We remember the event as a gimmick done to boost sales. Sure. Okay. However, the storyline had a massive impact on the readership, including our young Brad. Today,  DC Comics recalls the fictional catastrophe in The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special, exploring the lingering trauma of Kal-El's death. We chat with Dan Jurgens, the original Death of Superman co-architect, about what it was like to kill the Man of Steel, resurrect him, and revisit the narrative thirty years later through the eyes of Superman's son, Jon Kent. In his story, "The Life of Superman," Jurgens reveals how Superman's demise at the hands of Doomsday continues to affect Metropolis as well as Kal-El and his family. Jurgens recalls his earliest Superman memories, the George Reeves television icon of his youth. He considers the character's impact on the culture and the stress and joy it was to challenge such an image in 1992. We worm our way through his emotional experience, contemplating those long-ago feelings ignited while steering the splash page apocalypse that was Superman #75 (Volume 2). We work out our own fee-fees regarding the eradication of the Man of Tomorrow. The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special is now available wherever fine comic books are sold. Along with Dan Jurgens, the book features the work of Brett Breeding, Roger Stern, Butch Guice, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway, Tom Grummett, Glenn Whitmore, Doug Hazelwood, and more. It's a who's who of the Superman offices; and an incredibly thoughtful reflection on the nineties event to end all nineties events. Be sure to follow Dan Jurgens on Twitter and Instagram, and keep up to date on his work through his website. This is the first episode we recorded! We say that a couple times in the length of the episode, I promise, we're not confused. In this episode we talk about the Thor: God of Thunder (Vol 1, Issues 1-11), by Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic, Ive Svorcina, Butch Guice and Dean White. We talk about the first two arcs in this nearly decade long run Aaron commands and his overall impact on the massive mythology that comes with Thor as a character. We talk about the implications laid within the story and the themes communed through GORR THE GOD BUTCHER and his diabolical GOD BOMB. Its a lot of fun. We also talk about how we feel Gorr would be translated onto the big screen as we anticipate Thor: Love and Thunder directed by Taika Waititi. ALL of that and more as we continue to ask the question, Who Watches the Watchers? Follow us on Instagram for the love of god: https://www.instagram.com/comicbookraiders/

Chuck Dixon ramps the drama up in this intense, romantic story involving Black Canary and Ra's Al Ghul.  And yes, Talia is not happy about the proposition her father offers to Dinah Lance. Beautiful art by Butch Guice and Gloria Vasquez, who really capture the romance and horror of this book.  Mark and I are still puzzled by the characterization of Dinah, but there are so many talking points in this book that we really enjoyed discussing this story. The emotional beats displayed in the writing and art are quite masterful.   Contact us at feathersandfoes@gmail.com Twitter @feathersandfoes Websites: Feathersandfoes.com or wrightonnetwork.com

Episode 242: A Discussion of the 2017 Eisner Award Nominations

Earlier this month the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards were announced at the Comic-Con International website, and as Andy and Derek like to do every year, they're devoting a full episode of The Comics Alternative to a discussion of the nominations. On this week's show, the Two Guys give their impressions of the various nominees, both as a whole and on a category-by-category basis, making observations and trying to understand any trends underlying this year's selections. However, Derek and Andy resist the urge to play armchair quarterbacks, so they don't second-guess the six-member panel of judges or focus on what they would have chosen if they had been on the selection committee. As diligent comics scholars, they judicial and discerning in their commentary. At the same time, they don't shy away from pointing out a few inconsistencies and a few head-scratchers when trying to make sense of this year's nominations. You can find a complete list of the 2017 Eisner Award nominees below. Black Canary is Gorilla City with Lady Vic, who tried to kill her recently, Death Stroke, who is MIA at the moment, and Grimm, a gorilla who is fond of human behavior.  These band of misfits are going down the yellow brick road to find a heart for Block Buster.  This is a story with Grodd, and he is not amused.   Chuck Dixon scripts a wonderful story, and the artwork by Butch Guice is simply fab.

This weekend several comic book podcasters got together to do a non-stop 24 hour comics podcast. They included DC artist Mike Norton and Chris Crank of Devil's Due (The Crankcast) Marvel artist Skottie Young, Chris Neesman Brian Salazar & Tom Katers (Around Comics) Stevie D and Eric (The Comic Book Queers) and John Siuntres (Word Balloon).Along with the round table discussions, there were informal interviews with other comic pros like J Torres, Tim Seeley, Chris Moreno Jeremy Haun Chris Burnham, Sean McKeever and Brian Michael Bendis. Most of the pros just talked casually about work in general, but Bendis dropped a few comic news items regarding his books. On this special edition of Word Balloon, we present the Bendis interview, moderated by John Siuntres and the Around Comics hosts. Some highlights from the interview...On Ultimate Origin being re-scheduled...Bendis and artist Butch Guice have three issues completed, but some tie-in stories written by Jeph Loeb won't be ready till next year. Plus they didn't want the Ultimate Universe storyline to conflict with Bendis' Secret Invasion miniseries, so Ultimate Origin is getting pushed back until the end of summer 2008. On the ,b>Avengers/Secret Invasion/Illuminati books…When artist Frank Cho finishes his Mighty Avengers arc he will move to the Mighty Avengers Annual featuring an all female Avengers team facing a group of female villains. Mark Bagley then replaces Cho on the series, and he's already finished drawing his arc. After issues #6 and #7 of Mighty Avengers comes out, Illuminati #5 will be released. New Avengers #38 will be a very special issue focusing on Jessica Jones and Luke Cage drawn by Alias co-creator Michael Gaydos. "I don't want to spoil the story but it's called ‘The Break-Up.'" On Secret Invasion...There are clues to who is a Skrull in some of the tho

In Episode 101 of CEREBRO, the SEASON 4 PREMIERE, Connor and Head of X emeritus Jonathan Hickman extend a cautious hand to En Sabah Nur, the atrocious Apocalypse! Created by Louise Simonson, Walt Simonson, and Butch Guice as the central antagonist of 1986's X-Factor, the ancient immortal Apocalypse spent millennia worshiped by many names, secretly cultivating the mutant race. After decades of publication in which the heroes fought his seemingly inevitable ascent to power — particularly when he took on the role of franchise big bad in the 90s — the Krakoan Age changed everything, with the character revolutionized by Hickman and his collaborator Tini Howard. The CEREBRO character file on Apocalypse begins at 54:56.(Content Advisory: Apocalypse's story includes slavery, genocide, suicide, torture, brainwashing, and involuntary body modification.)You can support CEREBRO on Patreon! Our Sponsors:* Check out Drizly: https://drizly.com* Check out Factor and use my code cerebro50 for a great deal: https://www.factormeals.com/cerebro50Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
