The draconian abortion ban that has stripped away the reproductive freedom of ALL Texans and endangered - and in at least two cases, ended - the lives of ALL pregnant people in Texas remains in place. No single election will fix this issue - only steady, sustained advocacy for our basic rights will get the job done. A group of talented musicians has put together a terrific way for people who are frustrated with the situation to express themselves in a way that will help spread understanding and activism as the fight continues. We're joined by the folks putting on the Roe Was The Floor event in Austin on Thursday November 7 at Radio East in Austin: Walker Lukens (who happens to supply our sweet theme music!), A.J. Haynes (perhaps best known as a member of Louisiana's Seratones), and Song Confessional co-founder Zac Catanzaro give us the skinny on this innovative and meaningful event, and provide details on how YOU can join in, from anywhere you might be. My guest today is easily one of the bravest people that I know and it's mystifying how that's solely due to the honesty in which she lives her life. AJ Haynes of Seratones is a frontwoman and activist from Shreveport, Louisiana that is challenging what you've come to expect of rock music. Seratones third album, Love & Algorhythms, is unabashedly celebratory of the multitudes of our modern age (along with being an unapologetically queer as f$%k album). Sonically the music plays with elements of dance, electronica, pop, and soul while lyrically the songs depict the flux of the human condition. That said, I should point out how music is so little of what we talked about, and more about how life itself eventually inspires the art that we make. Along with being a frontwoman, AJ is also the President of the Board of the New Orleans Abortion Fund, a non-profit organization that's fighting for a woman's right to choose, especially in the face of the recent Roe v. Wade decision. Together we chat about a wild myriad of topics such as being black outside of the US, the pivotal nature of AJ's work in abortion care, the need that comes from truly loving yourself, and yes; we do discuss how this all informs the music of Seratones. Please consider making a donation to the New Orleans Abortion Fund, you can learn more about the organization by visiting their website here. Also, be sure to check out Seratones performance of Good Day for the Stephen Colbert show.
The world was just beginning to shut down due to the pandemic as Seratones returned home from their Power tour. The only way the band was able to work on new music was through Zoom sessions. Yet over the course of lockdowns and limitations, and dark moments both collective and internal, the energy coming from […]
A.J. Haynes is a Black Filipina queer femme performance artist, singer/songwriter, abortion access advocate, and reproductive justice leader. Haynes is led by spirit with a keen eye on the cosmos, centering her intersectional experience to shape not only the sound and ethos of her band Seratones, but the potential for liberation within her community. In the premiere of How Art is Born Season 2, A.J. sits down with host R. Alan Brooks to discuss how she got her start as a singer, a brief history of the reproductive justice movement in America, creating deeper engagement with community through art, and more.
Seratones frontwoman A.J. Haynes and her Shreveport, Louisiana-based band (bassist, Travis Stewart and drummer, Jesse Gabriel) released their disco-inspired, third album Love & Algorhythms, earlier this year. At the time of writing the album, A.J. was also working full-time as an Abortion Advocate in the last standing Abortion clinic in Louisiana, an experience that brought her close to burnout and informed much of the record's theme of liberation, Afro-Futurism and radical joy as a form of protest. She draws from the works of Black Feminist authors in her lyrics –– from civil rights activist, Toni Cade Bambara ("The Salt Eaters") to Science Fiction writer Octavia Butler ("Xenogenesis") and queer activist, Audre Lorde ("A Burst of Light" and "Sister Outsider"). While no longer working at an abortion clinic, she is still the President of the Board at the New Orleans Abortion Fund, and continues the fight for Reproductive Rights. Many thanks for making this possible — A.J. what an absolute force you are! I have learnt so much. Thank you to Fat Possum for use of songs from the album Get Gone. And to New West Records for songs from Power and Love & Algorhythms. And for support from Shazila Mohammed, Jaclyn Ulman and Devin Velez at Grandstand Media.Songs Featured: "Good Day," "Choking On Your Spit," "Don't Need It," "Power," "Fear," "Pleasure," "Get Free," "Two Of A Kind" and "Power of Your Light."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com Or leave a voice message here. A lot of anniversaries follow somewhat of a sequence along a rule of fives; after the first one’s done, you make sure the fifth year’s a big blowout…and by ten it’s typically amplified even more. For Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion, their ten-year anniversary this past March was an absolute blast, thanks in no small part […]

A scientist makes a device that is a glorified dog whistle that can melt your brain and cause seizures. He also now wants to destroy it. Support the Show! Be sure to #FillTheFedora on Patreon. Case Profile for Benjamin T Okara Benjamin T Okara was a brilliant scientist like many before that looked to bring something magical into the world. He and his team of scientists did just that but as with any good idea, the government can find a way to weaponize it. Feeling exposure from the device himself, Benjamin takes it upon himself to wipe out the team that has the info to make the weapon and eventually destroys the device and himself in a blaze of glory to prevent it from doing any more harm. Elsewhere Cooper is questioned about the night of his neighbors death and Charlene and Cooper both lie about his whereabouts. Park is still lying to Peter whom we meet in this episode only to find out that she doesn't have cancer, she is pregnant, er was pregnant because the weapon was used on her and that ended the pregnancy, which also ended Park and Peter's relationship. On this episode, I'm talking with musician and reproductive rights activist A.J. Haynes of the band Seratones. We talk about making space for peace in our lives, how sexuality is kind of like dessert, the ways capitalism & white supremacy effect everything from reproductive rights to children's music, and the exploring the depths of ourselves through reflection and art. It's a beautiful conversation that left my heart so full.

AJ Haynes, a Shreveport native and founder of the acclaimed rock group Seratones, is not one to mince words. For the sixth and final episode in our podcast series exploring the cultural impact of The Louisiana Hayride, Haynes joined All Y'all co-host Sara Hebert for a free-wheeling conversation that covers the history of Texas Avenue, racial erasure in pop culture, Shreveport music venues, the state of modern country music, and more. To Haynes, the idea of “reviving The Louisiana Hayride” sounds anachronistic, exclusionary and dull. She'd rather re-imagine the Hayride than re-create it, and daydreams of a Louisiana Hayride lineup featuring genre-hopping artists like Margo Price, Black Pumas, Sturgill Simpson, and The Suffers. Seratones is a band from Shreveport, Louisiana, who combines strutting groove, fuzzed-out slinky guitars, grounded tremolo organ, lush strings – and soaring over it all, frontperson AJ Haynes’s powerful singing voice, first honed at Brownsville Baptist Church in Columbia, Louisiana. This is music to sear earholes and "replenish your faith in the power of Rock & Roll" (Seratones' Bandcamp.) It’s electrifying Southern rock where punk rawness meets soul power, topped with a bit of blues swagger. Seratones plays music from their latest, Power, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Watch the session here:
