That's okay. Even small, everyday acts of service—helping a neighbor, cooking a meal, or simply being more present for someone—can have a huge impact. Another takeaway? If it's not on the calendar, it won't happen. We've learned that good intentions aren't enough—we need to schedule service opportunities just like we would a vacation or a family dinner. This week, we're challenging our kids to pick our next family service project, giving them ownership in the process. We'll report back on how it goes! So here's your challenge—how can you create more shared experiences in your family? Whether it's a service project, a trip, or just making time for regular family meals, intentionality is everything. This past Sunday, we explored what it means to serve together as the body of Christ. Scripture teaches that each of us has been given unique gifts, not for our own benefit but to build up the church and bless the world. Serving is not just an occasional task—it's part of our spiritual DNA and a reflection of Christ's love. When we serve, we grow spiritually, strengthen unity in the church, and worship God with our whole lives. While challenges like consumerism and burnout can distort our view of service, Jesus calls us to serve out of love, not obligation. For over a decade, Rebecca has been researching how religious communities engage in their broader communities, and the findings are incredibly compelling.Rebecca's work offers a powerful perspective on how congregations can heal divisions—not just within their walls but across society. Her research shows that when faith communities serve together and engage in meaningful outreach, they create what she calls “congregational warmth,” fostering deeper connections, stronger faith, and even healthier, more united communities generally.In this conversation, we discuss why service with our congregations, outside of the four walls of our church can be transformative, why young people today are more eager than ever to engage in meaningful service, and how worship spaces can be vital places for bridging political divides. Rescue workers cooperated to help two men stranded on an island in Micronesia. Teamwork was necessary because a widespread health crisis required them to limit their exposure to each other. The pilot who first spotted the castaways radioed a nearby Australian Navy ship. The ship sent two helicopters which provided food, water, and medical care. Later, the US Coast Guard arrived to check on the men and deliver a radio. Finally, a Micronesian patrol boat taxied them to their destination. We can accomplish a lot when we work together to achieve a common goal. The Philippian believers pooled their efforts to support the apostle Paul. Lydia and her family welcomed him into their home (Acts 16:13-15). Clement and even Euodia and Syntyche (who didn’t get along) all worked directly with the apostle to spread the good news (Philippians 4:2-3). Later, when Paul was imprisoned in Rome, the church gathered essentials for a care package and delivered it via Epaphroditus (vv. 14-18). Perhaps most importantly, the Philippians prayed for him throughout his ministry (1:19). The examples of believers serving together in this ancient church can inspire us today. Cooperating with fellow believers to pray and serve others as God leads and empowers us accomplishes much more than we could ever do on our own. It has been said, “Individually, we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.”
