How to Support the Rob Skinner Podcast.  If you would like to help support my mission to multiply disciples, leaders and churches, click here:  https://www.buymeacoffee.com/robskinner    Doing God's Will   1.        Jesus came to do God's will:  Hebrews 10:5-10   5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:   “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,     but a body you prepared for me; 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings     you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—     I have come to do your will, my God.'”   8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Jesus changed eternity by his willingness and surrender to God's will.  God's will for him was to suffer and die for each one of us.  Jesus embraced that will, no matter how difficult it was for him and changed our lives.  We are called to imitate him and to seek and pursue God's will for our lives.  That's not easy and yet it's the most exciting thing we can do with our lives.  We know that God wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.  If you repented and got baptized, you submitted to God's will for your life.  However, there is so much more to look forward to. 2.       God has a purpose for your life:  Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. None of us is saved by our good works.  However, we've been created and called by God to do good works once we've been born again.  God has prepared good works for you to do in advance.  It's already in the mind of God the good you can and will do.  You were called into the kingdom to do God's will and to do some amazing things.  You just have to continue to follow and discover the good works God has planned for you.  God had some surprises for me: Saving people Overseas missionary work Church plantings   3.       Be a person after God's own heart:  Acts 13:22 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' David and Saul are contrasted in this passage.  Saul was a natural leader.  He was tall, handsome and courageous.  He built and developed the nation of Israel.  However, he got removed from his position.  Why?  God had a will for him, a mission to accomplish and Saul said no.  He didn't actually say no, he just didn't do everything God wanted him to do.  God had called him to destroy the Amalekites.  Saul partially obeyed.  He wasn't willing to do everything God had called him explicitly to do.  David, on the other hand, is commended by God as “a man after my own heart.”  Why?  He was willing to do everything God wanted him to do.  Was he perfect?  No.  However, there was something that was submissive to God's will.  When he sinned in the affair with Bathsheba, he fasted and prayed for 7 days and returned to God in repentance.  I think each one of us wants to be known as a person who is after God's own heart.  You want God to commend you as a man or woman after his own heart.  What does that look like?  How do you define it?  It starts with a willingness to do everything God wants you to do.  It's so tempting to pick and choose and simply do the part of God's will that is appealing to us.  That's where we are often so different than Jesus. 4.      Ask to do God's will and not your own:  Matthew 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Jesus didn't want to go to the cross even though his whole life and ministry were directed toward the cross.  When he got there, he faltered, he shook, he cried, he sweated blood, he was in emotional agony.  He honestly told the father to give him a back door, an exit strategy, but finally he said, not as I will, but as you will.  Jesus is the perfect example of a person who fulfilled God's will and reaped the fruit of perfect obedience.  All nations will say, Jesus is Lord and acknowledge him.  There is power in submitting to God's will. 5.       How do you know when you are doing God's will? God is calling us to do his will.  We have a choice in this life to live small or live big.  Doing God's will is choosing to live big, to live dangerously, to fulfill the intention of God and his creation of us.  When you start doing God's will and asking to fulfill it, you'll experience: Fear Emotional turmoil A desire to find an exit strategy   When you resist doing God's will you will experience: Depression Boredom Lack of meaning Unease Confusion Restlessness Why?  Because God's Spirit is gently calling you to the good works you were created for and you are resisting.  You weren't meant to live small, you were meant to do God's will, even though that is scary. I recently read a book that said each morning we are confronted by two gremlins sitting at the foot of our bed when we wake up.  Those gremlins are fear and lethargy.  We fear taking risks to do God's will and we have to overcome our lethargy that says stay in bed and do God's will tomorrow.  Monday, I woke up and thought I don't want to get up and go to a service activity.  I wrestled back and forth.  That gremlin of lethargy and laziness was saying, “don't do it Rob!”  I finally forced myself out of the house and had a great time serving with other disciples.  The battle is real. How do you fight the gremlins of fear and lethargy?  You need to ask God for faith and love.  Faith overcomes fear and love beats out laziness.  “Whoever loves much does much” Thomas A'kempis said.  6.      Understanding the difference between your career and your calling:  Acts 18:3-4 3 and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. 4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. Paul had a career, a way to make money, that was tentmaking.  He relied on it when he couldn't find support from churches.  However his calling or vocation was to spread the gospel.  Here's the definition of vocation:  A vocation (from Latin vocatio 'a call, summons'[1]) is an occupation to which a person is especially drawn or for which they are suited, trained or qualified. Though now often used in non-religious contexts, the meanings of the term originated in Christianity.   You have a job, a way to pay the bills and that is important.  But you also have a vocation, something that God's Spirit is calling you to.  That is God's will for your life.  It may include your current job, but it's a lot more than that.  When Pam and I wanted to plant a church in my hometown, my career changed from full time ministry to Real Estate sales, but my vocation remained the same to preach the gospel and make Jesus known, to build a church of dedicated believers and try to reach my family with the gospel.  What's your calling?  You have to seek it.   Seek God's Will for your life:  Psalm 138:8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;     your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.     Do not forsake the work of your hands.  Psalm 57:2 I cry out to God Most High,     to God who fulfills his purpose for me.   Cry out to God that he gives you the courage and the strength to make the tough choices to do God's will.  To say no to: Distractions Sin Temptations Shadow missions Alternate purposes Greed These lead to a sense that you aren't living up to the high calling that God called you for originally.   Say yes to the challenges and risks associated with doing God's will.  It's scary. Becoming a Christian Going into the ministry Moving to Japan Planting a church bi-vocationally Moving to Tucson Doing missionary work in the future   Let's pray to do God's will.     Reflection Questions:   What do you sense God is calling you to do?  What is God urging you to do? What is keeping you from it?

Many people believe that what Jesus wants most from us is for us to associate with Him – like, by acknowledging Him as Lord and Savior. But in today's study, we'll look at Jesus' teaching concerning the importance of practical obedience to God's will, and we'll see that see that He held it of higher importance than association with Himself.  For more study, see: Are Good Works Important? Doing God's will should be a given for any and every Christian. After all, the mere fact that we are called "Christians" implies that we follow in Jesus' footsteps and are therefore obliged to do God's will as Jesus did God's will. While this all sounds pretty straightforward, the big question has to do with knowing. How do we know what the will of God is? Answering this question may be harder than we would like to think. It would be easy to assume that because we love and worship God, He will in turn show us His love by giving us the good things we want. After all, that IS what it says in Psalm 37:4: "Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart." Sounds exciting and almost easy, but as you might have guessed, it's not. So, how do we know what God wants for us?

Psalm 127 is the eighth of the “Ascent Songs” or “Pilgrim Psalms”. It has an inscription that attributes it to Solomon as the writer. Some scholars believe that King Hezekiah is the person who organized the “Ascent Songs” for the pilgrimage of the people and for their worship when they arrived in Jerusalem. Others think that it might have been Nehemiah or Ezra who complied these fifteen psalms for the remnant returning from their captivity in Babylon. They were both rebuilding the temple and walls of Jerusalem and having to fight their distractors and enemies at the same time! Remember Nehemiah had the people hold a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other as they worked on the wall. The major message of this psalm is that is no amount of human sacrifice or toil can accomplish much unless God's blessing is upon His people. I'll never forget an old hymn that says, “Little is much when God is in it”! But the opposite is true also, “A lot is nothing when God is not in it”!  As God's people, we are builders and more than anything else we need God's blessings upon us as we “build and guard” in a dangerous and demanding world. Solomon was a great builder, and he must have learned this lesson that if the LORD's blessings were not there, the builders labored in vain, and the soldiers would watch and guard in vain. God had called us to build—our lives, our homes, our churches, and the kingdom of God around the world. Before commencing His public ministry, Jesus was a carpenter (Mark 6:3), and He is currently building His church in this world (Matt. 16:18). The apostle Paul saw himself as a master builder (1 Cor. 3:10). Whether we are building structures with bricks and mortar and steel, or building lives, families, and churches with truth and love, we cannot succeed without the help of the Lord. Jesus said, "Without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We must also depend on the LORD to guard what is being built! (v. 1b). Strong walls around the city and alert watchmen on those walls are essential if we are to protect what we have built. And how foolish it is to build and not protect! Many a child and many a ministry has been lost to the enemy because the watchmen did not stay awake and warn that the enemy was approaching. If parents, teachers, and church leaders do not courageously depend on the LORD through prayer and His Word to guard against the enemy, our building and battling will be in vain. If verse 1 warns against overconfidence ("We can do it without God's help!"), verse 2 warns against overwork and anxious toil ("I have to do it all right now!"). This verse does not say it is wrong for people to get up early, work hard, and make sacrifices (see 2 Thess. 3:6-15). It only warns us that our work should be a blessing we enjoy and not a burden we endure. Doing God's will is nourishment, not punishment. But the anxious laborer eats "the bread of sorrows", sorrow while working and sorrow while trying to rest at night as he worries about the next day. God gives us "richly all things to enjoy" (1 Tim. 6:17). In verses 3-5, we are reminded that it does no good to build and guard our houses and cities if there are no future generations to inherit them and keep the family, city, and nation going. Children are precious—a heritage and they make the home a treasury. But they are also useful, like fruit and arrows, and make the home a garden and an armory. If we do not raise our children to know and love the truth, who will plant the seeds of truth and fight the battles against lies and evil in the years to come? It is in the family that we preserve the best of the past and invest it in the future. Every baby born is God's vote for the future of humankind and our opportunity to help make some new beginnings. May the LORD always give us grace to remember that we desperately need His blessings and “Little is much when God is in it!” God bless!

Preaching through Matthew 11:28-30, Pastor Gilbert teaches us how we can find the deepest form of rest. Rest for our souls comes from doing God's work and daily presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice for His purposes. Doing God's work involves surrendering yourself to the yoke of Jesus Christ and learning from Him. If we try to arrive at spiritual rest without Jesus we will come up empty and be left feeling dissatisfied. The pathway to this much-sought-after peaceful condition has already been laid out by God, we just need to see it, understand it, and practice the faith necessary to walk it.

In Genesis 12, Abram (later known as Abraham) was living with his father and family in a place that worshipped idols. God told him to leave and go to a place I will show you. Before we can get into our good, we have to get out of the bad. It takes motion and action….and guts. And depending on just how deep we may be into an issue, it may take some digging to get out. But you can’t have blessings like God would want for you if you are in the middle of bad. My hope is that Knowing and Doing God’s Will, will give you hope to move forward with God.

There are times in our lives when we know we've made a terrible decision. Sometimes our choice was blatant sin and rebellion, and other times the choice might have just been totally foolish. We know it's not God's will for us to sin and it's not God's will for us to make foolish decisions. So how do we recover when we know we've blown a major decision?  Do we miss God's will for our life?   In this final episode in Jay's “Knowing and Doing God's Will” series, Jay talks about the reality of blown decisions and understanding why it's important to have an eternal perspective on our temporal choices. He shares the hope that we find in Romans 8:28 and the joy of knowing that God's purposes are not thwarted because of our foolishness or rebellion.    As we come to terms with the reality of bad decisions, Jay gives us a simple pathway forward that will help us back on the right path. Listen as Jay discusses why it's important for us to:   Acknowledge our poor choice and repent to God and anyone else affected Grieve the loss caused by our foolish decisions Seek to make amends if possible Trust God's word, especially Romans 8:28, is true even in this situation Minimize the fallout of our poor choice by not compounding one bad decision with another Learn from our mistakes and choose more wisely next time! Where the Bible is clear about God's will, we must obey. But what about the thousands of choices we have in life where there doesn't seem to be specific clarity in God's Word? Do we pause and wait to hear the voice of the Lord? What about the people who seem to constantly say “God told me this?” Are we not walking with Jesus because we don't have a steady stream of “God told me this?”     As we continue our series Knowing and Doing God's Will, Jay highlights the many tools God has given us to make wise choices in areas where there are not specific commands from the Lord in Scripture. Borrowing the wisdom of Gary Freison and his book “Decision Making and the Will of God”, Jay walk through the different gifts God has given us that can serve as guideposts for decision making.   Listen as Jay shares how we can make wise decisions using The Bible An Open or Closed Door Mature Council A Fleece Inner Peace or Tension An alignment of passion, skills, and opportunity Common Sense With these gifts, God has given us plenty of resources to make healthy, wise, God-honoring decisions every day of our lives. One of the great paradoxes of life is that more choices don't always lead to a happier life. Never ending choices can be paralyzing. Additionally, many choices give the illusion of freedom on the front end but ultimately lead to entrapment, slavery, and devastating consequences.  As we continue our series on Knowing and Doing God's Will, today Jay takes about surprising principle: “Maximum Freedom is Found Under God's Authority”. Jay discusses how there is a beauty in God's word of eliminating the pressure of unending choices. Additionally, he shows how what may first appear restriction actually produces a greater degree of freedom. When we choose to seek and honor God's will in our lives, we are free from many of the devastating consequences of sin, including disease, regret, and destructive relationships. By submitting ourselves to the authority of God's word and limiting our choices to those God permits, we experience a far greater joy and satisfaction in life, as well as the anticipation of eternal reward for a life that's pleasing to God.  Resources mentioned: The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less by Barry Schwartz https://amzn.to/45qZ8ub The Seven Checkpoints for Youth Leaders by Andy Stanley: https://amzn.to/3ICSfw1 Decision Making and the Will of God https://amzn.to/3otDepG Support Let's Parent on Purpose through your Tax Deductible Giving Join my Things for Thursday Email List and get a free Marriage Snapshot Tool and Fun Family Conversation Ebook! One of the most common questions for a follower of Jesus is “How do I know God's will for my life?” Often, these questions revolve around a few major decisions, such as where should I go to school, what should I do for a job, and who should I marry?  As we continue our series “Knowing and Doing God's Will”, Jay lays out the Path of Wisdom for how to determine God's will for your life, including what one should do if God's will is not clear.    Relying heavily on guidance from the book “Decision Making and the Will of God” by Garry Freisen and J. Robin Maxson, Jay outlines a Path of Wisdom for decision making that will serve every believer in every circumstance. Ultimately summed up in the phrase “love God and do what you will,” Jay explains the following principles: Where God commands, we must obey Where there is no command, God gives us freedom (and responsibility) to choose Where there is no command, God gives us wisdom to choose When we choose wisely, we trust the Lord to work out the details Resources mentioned: Decision Making and the Will of God https://amzn.to/3otDepG Support Let's Parent on Purpose through your Tax Deductible Giving Join my Things for Thursday Email List and get a free Marriage Snapshot Tool and Fun Family Conversation Ebook! A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2023

I think there's like this five-year-old kid that comes out in everybody when they get to Disney World. I'm going to have to confess that the little boy inside of me is still alive and even though it's been awhile since I've been like in Disney World, I mean, we did enjoy the times when our family visited the Magic Kingdom some years ago. It's a wild ride through this outer space environment, in total darkness. So, you look at the line, and you see it's one of the longest lines in the park. At least it was then. And you go, "How long is this wait?" They say, "About an hour." No! Are we going to wait an hour? We did, and we even went back other times. It was great! It was worth it! You've got to wait for the best that they have. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Worth the Wait." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk. There are only a few chapters, but there's a lot in it. He told God's children back in that day that he was actually struggling with God's calling. He wanted justice. He's going, "God, why don't you stop the sin in our nation? How come it's taking so long?" And God says, "I'm going to answer your prayer in My time." Then the dreaded word in chapter 2, verse 3, "For the revelation awaits an appointed time." There's that word! Well, Habakkuk learns a beautiful lesson, because He says near the end of the book in chapter 3, verse 16, "I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will rejoice in God my Savior." Habakkuk has learned a solid gold lesson about following the Lord. Doing God's best is a lot like riding the best ride in a place like Disney World. You have to wait to get the best. The Bible is full of instances where people couldn't wait for God's answer. Like Abraham. He goes with Hagar, his wife's handmaid. He cannot wait for the promised son to come through him and Sarah, and he causes a horrible situation. Ishmael comes along, and today the descendants of Isaac, who would later come as the son of Abraham and Sarah, and Ishmael the descendant of Abraham and Hagar are still today fighting it out in the Middle East because Abraham couldn't wait. Moses tried to deliver the Jews by killing an Egyptian. He had the right idea, "My people should go free." God agreed, but not that way. He had to wander in the wilderness for forty years because he acted too soon. He acted his way... tried it his way. Created a forty year mess. See, God's best always comes after a wait. Look, a baby takes nine months. Suppose you need an answer, but you can't wait for it. How different the result could be if you could get an instant answer. Wait! You don't want a premature answer. You want God's full term. Maybe you're tired of waiting, but God's answer is worth the wait; it's the best. You may have spent a whole life waiting for a love you couldn't lose. You've been waiting for a peace that would sustain you in every storm. You've been waiting for the assurance that when you die you will be in heaven. Well, today God is coming your way with the offer of Jesus, His Son, who died to make all that happen. Who walked out of His grace to prove He can. Maybe you've never had a day when you've made Jesus your Savior. Maybe you've never opened your heart to Him. If you want to and you need to know how, would you come to our website and find that out? It's ANewStory.com. It could all begin there. A lifetime of waiting for the love that will fill your heart could be over now and that love could begin today.

And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem to Judea, and from beyond the Jordan." (Matthew 4:23-25) Main Idea: God blesses those who realize their great need for Him. God blesses NEEDY people. Main Application: So, BE needy and seek God's grace in every area of your life. 1. Jesus is focused on who you are (BEcoming), not just what you are (DOing) “God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by Grace, you have been saved - and raised us up with him and he seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ.” (Ephesians 2:4-7) 2. Be needy because that is who God will bless. 3. God's kingdom is here, but we're still waiting on it, but it will come.

Manifesting The Presence of GodApostle Emmanuel IrenThe Bible with regard to the presence of God is context specific.- The Omnipresence of God refers to God being everywhere at once (Psalm 139:7-8NKJV)- The omnipresence of God keeps us accountable- The omnipresence of God applies to all men and creatures while the indwelling presence of God applies only to those who believe in Jesus (John 14:23) As believers He has made us His temple and dwelling place.Even though God is everywhere at once He doesn't manifest everywhere. There is a training required to manifest the presence of God.God's answer to every need of man is the presence.God doesn't need to break chains.Chains break off on their own in the presence of God. (Acts 12:7 )God doesn't recognize limitations. Jesus went where no one will go in Matt 8:28 There is a level of authority that empowers you to go where no one can go.Learn to be conscious of the manifest presence of GodIf you have the in-dwelling presence of God you can stir up the manifest presence of God. It takes consciousness. You must lose satisfaction with the ordinary life. How to manifest the presence of God▪️By Knowledge- Have a reorientation of your understanding. This will change your expectations.▪️Doing God's work-Spiritual gifts get stronger with use. If you don't use it you won't grow in it even if you have it.▪️Demonstration - You will never see the power that you are not ready to demonstrate. Learn to put power to the test with confidence. "Doing God's will is adopting Jesus' way." Family Ministries Pastor Kyle Freedman continues our series, Anchors: Seven truths about the God who made us and loves us and intends for our flourishing, with the reminder that Jesus came to earth to show us how to live. Often when we face a challenging situation, we want to jump from the beginning to the end and skip the hard work in the middle. Kyle reminds us that Jesus came to do the work with us and he steps in to fill in the gaps where we fall short. God's will for us is to live out Jesus' way in the places we find ourselves: in our work, in our homes, with our families, and in relationships with people whom we may find challenging. His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5This short phrase, inserted within the story of the Wedding Feast of Cana, gives us much to ponder. It is a command of love, spoken by our Blessed Mother to the servants at the wedding. And though her words were initially spoken to those servants so as to bring forth the first miracle and sign of Jesus' divinity, we can be certain that our Blessed Mother also speaks them to each one of us.“Do whatever he tells you.” What a beautiful command of love! When we hear these words spoken to us, we must hear them as our Blessed Mother's perfect and ongoing guidance. So often in life we do what we want to do. We are drawn here or there by our passions and disordered desires. We struggle with being selfish and often make poor choices for our lives. This is the simple reality of sin that we struggle with every day. But if we can heed the Blessed Mother's words, hearing them as words spoken from her heart to ours, then we will have a new direction in life.Doing the will of God first requires that we listen to the voice of God. We must listen to our Lord speak to us. How well do you do this? Our minds are often flooded with many thoughts, and we are easily influenced by many things. Not only do our disordered passions, feelings and emotions confuse us at times, but there are so many varied and confusing voices within our world itself. We are influenced by those we encounter every day for good or ill, by the mass media, by the things we read or watch, and even by the evil one himself as he tempts us day in and day out.If we can daily strive to eliminate the many misleading voices within our lives and tune in to the simple, clear and profound voice of God, then we have taken a good first step. But from there, we need to “do” that which God asks of us. Hearing God speak can be difficult, but doing what we hear from God can be even more difficult. It has been said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Good intentions are not enough. Doing God's will with all our might is the answer.Reflect, today, upon this twofold question. First, am I able to hear what God asks of me each and every day, or am I misled and influenced by many other voices? Second, how well do I put into action that which I know God asks of me? “Do whatever he tells you.” Ponder this phrase and hear it as a true command of love from our Blessed Mother.Dearest Mother, please speak these words to me every day. As you do, please pray for me that I may listen to all that your Son asks of me and obey His voice with my whole heart. Thank you for your perfect “Yes” and your obedience to God in all things. May I learn to more fully imitate you every day. Mother Mary, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc.
