Earlier this year, the Mind Tools and Emotion at Work teams ran a fringe event at the CIPD Festival of Work. At the event, we asked participants for their ‘Hot Takes': something that's a little bit provocative - but might actually be true. This week, in a special crossover episode, The Mind Tools L&D Podcast team are joined by Phil and Lizzi from Emotion at Work to reveal the winner: Most employees aren't actually that interested in L&D. We discuss: the extent to which we think this ‘Hot Take' is true the importance of development to employees vs ‘learning and development' as a function what L&D teams can do to market and promote themselves. During the discussion, Phil referenced the Kirkpatrick Model of evaluation. Ross referenced the work of Shannon Tipton to help L&D teams develop a brand. In ‘What I Learned This Week', Nahdia referenced the Edelman Trust Barometer and British Social Attitude Survey. Phil referenced Kids Week at the London Theatre. Damn it, Jim! I'm an Instructional Designer! Not a scientist! That may be so, but it doesn't mean you can't perform experiments. Testing things out is how we learn. You can ask experts, consultants, and thought leaders, to give you all the answers, but you'll never truly know what will work until you do it. So, let's learn how to experiment within L&D.Trying things out first is how we gain the confidence to make decisions. And the biggest decision you need to make is how can you improve your work, your team, your training designs, and your career.Shannon Tipton joins us to talk about the insights she gained doing research with Laura Overton. In the middle of 2020 they asked 32 practitioners/thinkers from around the globe "How can L&D emerge stronger from the pandemic?"It turns out that the ability to experiment, try something new, fail fast and learn faster has been a characteristic of high performing learning teams throughout the disruption of the pandemic. Experiments in L&D are under-utilised and misunderstood. What they found is that the right experiments at the right time work. They release creativity and empower innovation through exploration. We'll discuss some of the follow elements of experimentation that YOU can use today:- The anatomy of a great experiment- How to take evidence informed risks- Who to involve and when- Why a pilot is not an experiment- Tactics that work (and don't work)Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. With so many courses being created on a regular basis, and so few of them showing much level of improvement, how do we make a better learning mouse trap? Communities! People learn best when they are connecting with other people. And in the standard models of instructional design we typically leave participants on their own after the training event has occurred. But when we know that learning is a long-term process, why don't we do more to support that? Well... now we can. This week on IDIODC we'll be talking with Shannon Tipton who regularly engages the students who take her courses with a slack group for collaborative engagement before, during, and after the main training events. This idea isn't new, but executing it successfully certainly is. Join us and hear how Shannon has successfully integrated communities into her learning designs. Grab your thinking cap, a cup of coffee or tea (or whatever your drink of choice may be), and get ready for an insightful session with Shannon, Brent and Chris! The training industry has a legacy of creating events that take learners out of the context of their work. Over the years new technologies have disrupted that model. We now have the tools to educate and support learners while they work. Workflow Learning is a relatively new concept but has it's roots in performance support. There is also a significant element of microlearning in the mix. All of these concepts have come together as a new comprehensive solution that improves business outcomes. And that is why businesses are asking for it. This week Brent and Chris bring back returning guest Shannon Tipton for her second appearance on the show! We'll be talking about workflow learning and how it works. She'll go over some of her tips and tricks and examples of success stories using workflow learning. This week's podcast covers the thorny topic of microlearning. We struggle to even define microlearning, so does the term have any real value? Is it ‘chunking'? ‘Performance support'? Can we agree on a definition that makes it useful? If so, what is it, and how can we help clients understand it? Ross G and Owen thrash out the answers with microlearning aficionado Shannon Tipton.
