Anbefalinger nevnt i episoden: Willingham, D. In this weeks podcast Dan and Ray have a conversation about education with Dr Simon Breakspear.    Simon is a globally respected expert in educational leadership and innovation, known for his insightful work on transforming learning environments.  His forward thinking ideas around education are reshaping the way schools and school systems are thinking about teaching, learning and leadership.       In this episode we talk about:   Distinction Between Productivity and Pedagogical Uses of AI: Simon, Dan, and Ray discussed the critical distinction between using AI for productivity tasks in education (such as administrative work and report summarisation) and for pedagogical purposes, emphasising that while AI can greatly enhance productivity for adults, its use in learning processes for students requires careful consideration to avoid undermining cognitive development.   Human Development and the Role of Analogue Learning: Simon argued that foundational human development—such as reading, writing, and critical thinking—should precede the use of AI in learning, with Dan and Ray supporting the view that analogue learning experiences are crucial for building the cognitive and personal skills necessary for effective future use of AI.   Guidance for School Leaders and Teachers on Navigating AI Integration: Ray and Dan sought practical advice from Simon for school leaders and teachers facing pressure to adopt AI, with Simon recommending a cautious, evidence-based approach that prioritises human development, leverages AI for productivity gains, and introduces AI into learning processes only where it demonstrably enhances educational outcomes.   Changing Role of Teachers in the Age of AI: Ray questions whether the role of teachers must change with AI, and Simon responded that while some administrative tasks may be automated, the core human functions of teaching—motivating, engaging, and forming students—will become even more critical, with teachers needing to exercise professional judgement about when and how to use AI in the classroom.   Ethical and Equity Considerations in AI Adoption: Dan and Simon discussed the ethical implications and potential inequities arising from AI adoption in education, highlighting concerns that uneven access and premature augmentation could disadvantage certain groups of students and create disparities in skills and opportunities.   Practical Strategies for Selective AI Integration: Simon provided practical strategies for integrating AI into education, recommending that schools focus on specific, evidence-based learning processes where AI can add value, such as feedback and retrieval practice, and to avoid being overwhelmed by the proliferation of AI tools.   Long-Term Purpose of Education Amidst Technological Change: Simon concluded that the ultimate goal of education is not solely economic productivity but the holistic formation of human beings, arguing that enduring human skills, identity, and community are essential for resilience in an unpredictable future, regardless of technological advancements.     Links: Dr Simon Breakspear | Speaker. Truth in Learning: in Search of Something! Anything!! Anybody?

Welcome back! Sorry for our long hiatus. In this episode, Clark and Matt explore GENERATIVE LEARNING. Early on, Clark brings up Craik and Lockhart's research about how information is processed on different levels (Craik, F. I. M., & Lockhart, R. S. (1972). Levels of processing: A framework for memory research. Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal behavior, 11, 671-684.) The paper can be found here. Throughout the podcast we talk about our colleagues and friends, John Sweller and Paul Kirschner several times. Some of the references we allude to are: LDA Podcast. (2024, January 25). The “What the Skills” Episode. Interview with Paul Kirschner by Matthew Richter. https://ldaccelerator.com/podcast. Sweller, J. (2016). Cognitive Load Theory: What We Learn and How We Learn. In M. (1998). Cognitive architecture and instructional design. Educational Psychology Review, 10(3), 251–296. Another hero of ours is Richard Mayer. A favorite source from Rich, along with his long-time colleague and our LDA friend, Ruth Clark, is: Clark, R. C., & Mayer, R. E. (2024). E‑Learning and the Science of Instruction: Proven Guidelines for Consumers and Designers of Multimedia Learning (5th ed.). Wiley. Clark relays a story of working with Kathy Fisher during his time as a graduate student, discussing her use of semantic networking with biology students to help them represent their understandings: Fisher, K. (1992). Semantic networking: the new kid on the block. In P. A. M. Kommers, D. H. Jonassen, & J. T. Mayes (Eds.) Mindtools: Cognitive Technologies for Modelling Knowledge. Berlin: Springer-Verlag. At one point we discuss the human information processing loop. While Sweller (and Kirschner) are super explainers of the Loop– as John refers to it, a part of the cognitive architecture, others have come before... Atkinson, R.C.; Shiffrin, R.M. (1968). Human Memory: A Proposed System and its Control Processes. Psychology of Learning and Motivation. Vol. 2. pp. 89–195. doi:10.1016/S0079-7421(08)60422-3 Baddeley, A. D., & Hitch, G. J. (1974). The magical number seven, plus or minus two: Some limits on our capacity for processing information. Psychological Review, 63(2), 81–97. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0043158  Sweller and Kishner soon come up again, but this time with their co-author, Richard Clark, during a heated discussion of their groundbreaking (and Matt favorite) paper about the issues with constructivist learning called “Why Minimal Guidance During Instruction Does Not Work: An Analysis of the Failure of Constructivist, Discovery, Problem-Based, Experiential, and Inquiry-Based Teaching” which can be found here: Kirschner, P. A., Sweller, J., & Clark, R. E. (2006). Educational Psychologist, 41(2), 75–86. https://doi.org/10.1207/s15326985ep4102_1 Next, we discuss how to confirm whether the learners are able to retrieve the information being conveyed to them. Clark shares the work of teacher and cognitive scientist, Pooja Aggerwal: Agarwal, P.K. (2019). Retrieval Practice & Bloom's Taxonomy: Do Students Need Fact Knowledge Before Higher Order Learning? RELATIONSHIPS Over Revenue | Talk2Rami feat. Kate (Barnett) KirschnerKate (Barnett) Kirschner shares her journey from overcoming social anxiety to becoming a successful sales leader at Guesty. For her, the most important aspect of sales is building genuine relationships, embracing vulnerability, and adapting thoughtfully to the rise of AI in the industry. Her philosophy centers on truly caring for people, asking the right questions, and fostering a collaborative sales culture. In the world of sales, the traditional approach often feels transactional, focusing solely on closing deals rather than fostering genuine connections.Successful sales are rooted in relationships. Hiring individuals who are natural relationship builders is crucial. "If you get a good relationship builder, if you get somebody who cares about human beings, you can teach them a product, and they can sell it.”Kate's experience in building relationships serves as a reminder that success is not just about closing deals—but about fostering genuine connections. By prioritizing empathy, curiosity, and collaboration, sales professionals can create a culture that not only drives results but also enriches the lives of those they serve. In a world where technology is ever-present, the human element cannot be replaced, and those who embrace this philosophy will undoubtedly thrive in their careers.Get in touch with Kate on LinkedIn and check out GuestyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katebarnettkirschner/Guesty automates and streamlines every aspect of your growing & changing rental business.
