The two-year itch: Rethinking Retention for the Modern Tech Workforce

Many of our talent and career development models stem from another age - when we joined a company, got a number of promotions and stayed as long as the company allowed us to. Of course, nowadays, the reality for many of us is very different. Flatter structures offer fewer promotional opportunities. Volatile markets mean that the longevity of companies has declined. And whilst there is some debate about whether Gen Z and Millennials do want to change companies more often - in one sector, there's clear evidence that retaining your people is more of a challenge. In the tech sector, employees are changing jobs and companies every 2 years or so. This is a particular challenge for smaller tech companies where promotional opportunities are more limited. So, how does an HR Director tackle this challenge? Is it about creating golden handcuffs or just accepting that this is the new normal? To discuss this issue Lucy is joined by Matt Kennedy, CPO at Go1, a leading learning content provider. Matt provides an intriguing perspective on the evolving challenges of employee retention in the tech industry, where traditional career paths are being upended. He shares his story of transitioning from Microsoft and Starbucks to a cutting-edge tech company . We explore how smaller tech companies can distinguish themselves from larger corporations by offering more personalized growth opportunities and promoting impactful projects. We discuss the importance of being transparent about career paths and creating a culture that not only retains talent but also transforms former employees into ambassadors for the organization. His experiences highlight the vital role of informal mentorship and real-world experiences in developing soft skills that complement formal training. For HR professionals eager to challenge the norms and enhance employee retention, this conversation is packed with practical strategies and thought-provoking insights that will leave you rethinking your approach to building a resilient workforce in the dynamic tech landscape. AI is starting to drive a profound shift in the workplace. The skills we've prioritized for decades are becoming automated, with uniquely human capabilities beginning to emerge as the true differentiators. So, are your hiring and development strategies still focused on what machines can already do, or are you investing in the skills that AI can't replicate? The rapid evolution of AI is starting to reshape the skills landscape, but it is already becoming clear that many employers will struggle to adapt. While hard skills have traditionally dominated hiring and development strategies, it's becoming increasingly clear that soft skills like communication, critical thinking, empathy, and adaptability are the true differentiators in an AI-dominated workplace.  However, most organizations don't know how to properly define, measure, or develop these soft skills, leaving them vulnerable to skills shortages in the human capabilities that will drive their future success. So, how can companies identify and nurture the skills that AI can't replicate? My guest this week is Dan Haywood, Chief Customer Officer at Go1, one of the world's leading learning content aggregators. Dan shares valuable insights on how the skills landscape is evolving and why soft skills are becoming increasingly critical as AI handles more technical and repetitive tasks. In the interview, we discuss:  • [01:56] How the demand for skills is evolving in an AI world  • [03:04] Why education systems aren't adequately preparing people for modern work  • [08:11] The four key soft skills groups employers need to focus on  • [11:51] The challenges of defining, measuring, and developing soft skills and how to overcome them  • [14:30] How employers can embed soft skills into their learning culture • [14:30] The importance of executive modeling in skills development  • [16:55] Connecting soft skills development to measurable business outcomes  • [17:02] What the future skills landscape will look like as AI continues to advance Follow this episode on Apple Podcasts. In this episode of Founder Focus, we are joined by Dr Vu Tran.  Vu is a visionary entrepreneur and co-founder of Black Sky Industries, a leading Australian aerospace and defense company specializing in sovereign solid rocket propulsion systems and advanced manufacturing. Before co-founding Black Sky Industries, Vu Tran was a  co-founder of Go1, one of the world's leading online learning platforms. Go1, has raised approximately $400 million in total funding with the last valuation of approximately $3 Billion. The key topics of the episode include:  Transition from Go1 to Defense Tech: Vu explained his journey from co-founding Go1 to co-founding Black Sky Industries. He emphasized the importance of succession planning and his realization that he thrives in early-stage ventures, which led to his pivot toward defense technology. Focus on Sovereignty in Defense: Vu highlighted the critical need for sovereign capabilities in Australia, explaining the risks of over-reliance on foreign defense systems and the importance of building local capacity, particularly in rocket propulsion and related technologies. Insights for Founders: Vu shared his belief in the value of self-awareness and understanding one's strengths and passions. He spoke about the importance of stepping back as a founder when necessary and fostering a strong organizational culture to sustain growth. Cultural Leadership Approach: At Black Sky Industries, Vu introduced the concept of separating HR administrative tasks from people and culture development. This approach aims to ensure personal and professional growth for employees while aligning their roles with the company's mission. Defense as a Growing Market: Vu discussed the expanding total addressable market (TAM) for defense technology globally, emphasizing the high demand and low supply for solid rocket motors and other technologies. He pointed out that defense tech is an emerging space with significant investment opportunities. Challenges and Misconceptions in Defense: Vu addressed public criticism and misconceptions about working in the defense sector. He emphasized the defensive—not offensive—nature of Black Sky's mission, focusing on protecting sovereignty rather than aggression. Bootstrapping Success: Black Sky Industries is entirely bootstrapped and profitable, with about 30 employees. Vu shared lessons from his Go1 experience about taking calculated risks and scaling sustainably. Technology and Innovation: Vu mentioned the potential second-order effects of defense technology on civilian applications, such as using rocket motors for research and innovation in other industries. Broader Perspectives on Venture and Growth: The discussion touched on the challenges of venture capital and the need for founders and investors to focus on areas with less competition and high-growth potential, such as defense. hello@tribeglobal.vc

Blinkist was created during the dawn of smartphones to solve a problem experienced not only by its co-founders but by many working professionals: wanting to learn new things, but not having the time to do so. They take long form content (mostly non-fiction books, but also podcast episodes and articles) and distill them into 15 minute reads or listens. Most features are behind a paywall, but there's also 1 blink of the day that non-paying users can enjoy. Their user base includes both people who are readers and see Blinkist as a supplement, and people whose sole contact with books comes from Blinkist. In 2023 Blinkist was acquired by the Australian content company Go1. This was a goal the Blinkist team had been pursuing ever since they took on VC money. Nowadays Holger is no longer the CEO of Blinkist but remains active as COO at Go1.  Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Welcome to Tribe Talkin' Episode two, by Tribe Global Ventures, the B2B VC. In today's episode we talk about Blackbird selling 3% of their stake in Canva, and what that means for the ecosystem in general. As part of this we talk about how important it is to have an interconnected ecosystem of founders and investors to help companies navigate big challenges.   In this, we discuss how important the recycling of capital is to the ecosystem, and touch on Side Stage Ventures raising funds backed by other tech founders from companies such as Go1. There were reports this week that some bank VCs were winding up, and how one founder with investment from one of these VC's described it as a very good thing they were winding up. Ouch. We discuss the issues corporate VC's face in general, and the disconnect that often occurs between the culture of the corporate and the culture of the start-up. But it's not easy or black and white, and we discuss news that Bardee, a company that had raised $5million in late 2021, was laying off staff which follows the resignation of the investor director from Blackbird. We talk about the complexities of being a director appointed by a shareholder, and the conflicts appointed directors need to navigate in balancing their various obligations. For our deep dive, we look why the recent “tech wreck” so to speak is not a total investment wreck, following an article Elaine has published on her view of the Australian venture capital market given her 17 years unbroken investment experience across multiple cycles. You can read this article here: https://tribeglobal.vc/why-tech-wreck-not-investment-wreck/  We talk about how conditions in Australia, in many ways, are the healthiest and most robust they have been, and look at different factors emerging in terms of fund specialisation, valuations, and the changes founders need to make during times of abundance vs scarcity. We hope you like todays episode, and welcome any comments, and appreciate if you could rate the podcast whilst you're here. hello@tribeglobal.vc  For more information on the portfolio companies shared in this episode:  https://www.aplyid.com/  https://www.kanopicover.com/  https://www.swarmfarm.com/

For our very first podcast, we are genuinely humbled to have been joined by Vu Tran, one of the co-founders of Australian unicorn Go1. For those who don't know the Go1 story – Go1 is ‘the Spotify for learning content creators'. Started in (and still headquartered in) suburban Brisbane, Go1 now has a global presence, and still helmed by four friends who as a co-founding team have been together for over 16 years – quite a rarity in the world of start-ups.  And a fun fact, when he is not growing one of Australia's most successful start-ups, Vu also has time to work as a GP one day a week in his local community. Impressive. One of Tribe's cofounders Elaine Stead invested in Go1 very early in their journey, and this podcast covers that period and much more including: Founder origin story The importance of knowing your level, and aiming higher Co-foundership Navigating interpersonal conflict and ego The benefit of hierarchy and explicit co-founder roles and accountability Luck vs skill Difficult and unpopular decisions Risk taking vs gambling Learning from mistakes as the real success coefficient Scaling up mistakes Fundraising and investor types Elaine's rationale for investing early into Go1 around the time they were pivoting from a LMS to a market place The importance of significant others Conviction We hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it and please drop any comments below.

Join us in the Krueger Marketing podcast studio this week for another episode of The State of Sales Enablement. Managing hypergrowth is a tough challenge as a sales leader. The same applies to the management of a global sales team. Our guest in this episode has done it all. Successfully. And we're lucky enough to be able to explore his approach in all detail. In this episode, we catch up with Shorthand's VP of Sales, https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrianryanhill/ (Adrian Hill). These are some of the questions we cover: For those listeners who don't know GO1, what does GO1 do? During your stint at GO1, you were growing the sales team quite a bit. Where did you start out and where did you end up just to give the listeners a feel? How did you enable your sales team and make sure that you maintain quality within the team while scaling? Were there any metrics that you've used to measure success in growing that team and have those changed over time? How do you ensure that you guys communicate well enough to make this work? And what are the kind of the starting points for conversation between sales and marketing? Considering content is kind of part of your company DNA, how do you utilise content as part of the sales process and what sort of role do you think its plays for your team? If you identify excellence in a certain area, a salesperson does something really well or a certain region does something really well. How do you capture that to make the rest of the sales team benefit from that? In terms of the learnings that you capture from those successful deals, is there any way you capture those learnings and make them part of your onboarding program or of other training activity? Have you found that you've unearthed in those kinds of conversations inside sets that give you an idea that the market has shifted in a certain way the way people utilise the product or see the value in your product has changed over time? Do you see a big differences in the way sales need to be approached across regions and what sort of differences are there? How do you make sure that the communication remains effective and collaborative and your global sales team really feels like being part of the team from a cultural perspective? For anybody starting in a VP of sales role, what sort of advice would you give those people to hit the ground running and to be really successful in mentoring a larger sales team?
