It's so good to be back with you bringing another series of Making Stitches Podcast to your ears!My guest for this episode is Felicity aka Felix Ford, an artist who works in colour, sound and yarn. I first heard about Felix's work when a mutual friend contacted me and suggested she might be a good guest for the podcast – she was right! Before our chat which features in this episode, Felix asked to send me a couple of her books and an invitation to join one of her online courses so I could get a proper feel for her work. I signed up for the ‘Colour at Play' Course in the hope I would be able to improve my skills at marrying colours together when I design a crochet project. In addition to this, I discovered that Felix had a podcast herself – the KNITSONIK Podcast in which she recorded sounds and wove them together with interviews, chats about her work and her own musical compositions.I really enjoyed getting to know Felix through her work, and then by chatting to her late last year ready for this podcast episode. It was genuinely joyful to hear about Felix's experiences including learning to colour match oil paint to a basket of eggs, how designing yarny covers for her walking stick diverted conversations with strangers away from her disability to her creativity and how her work with sound, colour and yarn has led her to setting up the KNITSONIK school.I have to say a huge thank you to Felix for being so generous with her time and for allowing me to use some of her music in the podcast episode. You can find the KNITSONIK podcast here if you would like to hear more of Felix's audio work. (I can especially recommend the Shetland Wool Week episode)You can find the KNITSONIK website here. For the full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches Podcast website. To join the mailing list for the Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this link. The theme music is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops .The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches  Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston.

Most of her classes relate to Fair Isle techniques, but she will also be taking classes in lace and Bohus knitting, as well as whittling her own shawl pin. She will be reporting back on her experiences there, so stay tuned for the episodes coming in October! Because it's the 10th anniversary of Shetland Wool Week, there are many, many programs going on. Plus, often times, people overbook themselves for classes and sell their tickets on. So, if you're on the fence about going this year, there will still be plenty to do and see and a good chance that you'll be able to get in to a class. If you will be attending this year, reach out to Anne and say hi! Progress on the Master Hand Knitter Program Anne continued to work on her seed stitch practice scarf over the last few weeks and finally had a breakthrough thanks to a video by Arenda Holladay. It wasn't Holladay's method so much as what she said. Watch the video below to see Holladay's fix and listen to the podcast episode to hear what worked for Anne. (Ok, ok... She found that tugging the yarn after working the purl stitch is what did the trick for her!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15ORNUlhgTM While this isn't the method that eventually worked for Anne, it's what sparked the answer for her! Anne will be knitting up her official seed stitch swatch and moving along in the program! Stay tuned for further progress and tips! Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL and CAL for Warm Up America! What started as a baby blanket failed due to insufficient amounts of yarn. But no worries, Anne used the yarn for that failed project, along with all the remaining acrylic in her stash, to crochet 28 blocks for the Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL/CAL. Follow that link to get all the details on this project to support Warm Up America! The KAL/CAL launched on May 1 and runs until May 31! There's a chance to win a set of needles or hooks from Knitter's Pride, so get crackin'! Anne had planned to send a few blocks, but when a baby blanket project failed because she didn't have enough yarn to finish it, she used the yarn to make some blocks to send to Warm Up America. Then she cleaned out the rest of her acrylic scrap yarn and ended up crocheting thirty blocks in all! Upcoming Events -- Be Sure to Say Hi! Anne will be heading to the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft event on May 25. At noon, she will be at the sheep event area in case anyone wants to come by and say hi. Or just look for her in the crowd and say hello! The I-91 Yarn Shop Hop is scheduled for June 27-30th. Anne will be hitting the yarn stores in the New Haven area on the 28th and in Massachusetts and Vermont on the 29th. If you see her, say hi! Or get in touch to coordinate a time to meet at one of the shops in those areas! The next place Anne will be popping up is in NYC for 11 weekdays between July 9-25. Anne will be yarn crawling her way around Manhattan on many of those days. What's your favorite NYC yarn shop that she shouldn't miss? Drop her a line in the comments and let her know! knitCompanion Review Sally Holt, the genius behind the knitCompanion app, should be up for the Knitting Nobel Prize. That's a thing, right? knitCompanion works on iOS and Android devices and exists to make your knitting life so much easier. The free version of the app helps you organize your patterns and track where you are in your charts or written instructions. Affordable subscriptions increase the usefulness of the app dramatically, though, adding the ability to create shortcuts and add information to patterns. You can also manipulate the keys and charts within the patterns. Five minutes of prep in knitCompanion can save you hours of frustrations in some of your more complicated projects. It didn't take long for Anne to fall in love with the program. She uses it all the time. Listen to the episode below for an in-depth review of the features or subscribe through the podcast app of your choice. We're back on schedule with this week's episode, in which we talk about Allison's trip to Shetland for part of Shetland Wool Week and dig into the patterns in two gorgeous books: Wool Journey: Shetland by Amber Corcoran, Jaime Jennings, Malia Mae Joseph and Stephen West, and Shetland by Marie Wallin.   Sponsor This episode of the podcast is sponsored by Garthenor, providing a variety of sustainable, organic British wool products in an ecologically responsible way. See Garthenor’s glorious yarns, including a kit for Isabell Kraemer's new Amory sweater, on their website at http://www.garthenor.com. Make Happy – aka – What we’re working on Rachel is still plugging away on her yellow Erika Knight jumper in British Blue 100. The change in weather means her wool mojo has returned with a vengeance, so she's also been spinning and had a bit of a slip last weekend, and is now the proud owner of a 10" Cricket loom which is destined for generating lots of handspun handwoven scarves.  Allison has finished spinning her Turning on Shetland from Porpoise Fur, and mostly finished her Martinique Beach Cowl! Still working on Lemon Difficult by Kate Atherley, but mostly has been spinning like a demon for Spinzilla.  Shetland Alli talks about her trip and all the fabulous places she visited, including Uradale Farm. Then we discuss the five patterns in Wool Journey: Shetland, by Amber Corcoran and Jaime Jennings, owners of Fancy Tiger Crafts in Denver (Rachel visited the shop several summers ago) and Malia Mae Joseph and Stephen West, co-owners of Stephen & Penelope in Amsterdam. See all the patterns on Ravelry here. Last but not least we talk about the glorious stranded colourwork designs in Marie Wallin's new book Shetland (see all the patterns on Ravelry here). Lushly photographed and full of glorious colourwork designs, this book is definitely worth a look for anyone with a hankering for a challenge! Other books about Shetland you might want to explore:  Shetland Wool Week Annual 2017 Shetland Oo by Kate Davies and Tom Barr  Colours of Shetland, Inspired by Islay, or anything else by Kate Davies Wrap up Many thanks for joining us for another episode! Dr Felicity Ford (Artist, Oxford Brookes) Abstract With influences as diverse as Rebecca Solnit, Kate Davies, Brandon LaBelle and Pauline Oliveros, Felicity Ford’s KNITSONIK projects connect and extend dialogues within contemporary scholarship of knitting and sounds. Emphasising the sense of place perceptible in both wool and field recordings, Felicity explores how creative knitterly and sonic activities can be incorporated into daily life to positively emphasise connections between the sensing body and its territory: knitting and field recording are framed as cultural practices that can actively inform and shape our sense of place. For the Civic Matters lecture series, Felicity will contextualise and explore recent ventures pertinent to these themes such as the KNITSONIK Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook – a crowd-funded publication on the theme of translating your everyday environment into stranded colourwork and Listening to Shetland Wool – a lecture presentation given at Shetland Wool Week exploring how listening to sounds can help us apprehend textiles in the specific geographical and cultural context of Shetland.
