Founders Don't Retire

What if “retirement” for founders isn't about stopping work, but finally getting relief? The conversation unpacks why builders rarely stop building: founders are wired to create, not to consume, and the fantasy of beach life usually shows up at a low-energy point when what's really needed is recovery. They compare founder burnout to wanting the finish line without running the race, and note how exits often lead from “margaritas” to “domain names” within months because the calling returns once the nervous system resets. The key reframe: separate a recovery plan from a retirement plan, and define “retirement” as creating on your own terms—less panic, fewer hated parts (like investor pressure or endless hours), more control, and a sustainable way to keep doing the work you love. What to listen for:00:49 Builder DNA and Relief00:57 Carpenter Story and Pain03:06 Four Minute Founder Brain04:31 Broken Retirement Dream05:13 Reload and Retire Again06:31 Beach Metaphor Explained09:58 Athletes vs Founder Longevity12:00 Vacation Checklist Trap15:35 No Substitute for Mission17:29 Finish Line Fantasy18:45 Recovery Not Retirement20:35 Builders Need Purpose25:14 Retired But Uncharged27:00 Creation Over Consumption30:16 Retirement On Your Terms32:26 Design Better CircuitsResources:Startup Therapy Podcasthttps://www.startups.com/community/startup-therapyWebsitehttps://www.startups.com/beginLinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/startups-co/Join our Network of Top FoundersWil Schroterhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/wilschroter/Ryan Rutanhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-rutan/

Rethinking Your Photographic Approach

Welcome to episode 580 of Perceptive Photographer. and today I want to explore the ever-evolving relationship we photographers have with technology. From the most basic cameras to today's powerful digital tools, technology is always a factor but it shouldn't determine how or why we create. Embracing — and Moving Beyond — Technology Photography has always been intertwined with technology, from pinhole boxes to today's advanced cameras. While that tech is necessary, it shouldn't dictate our creative vision. When you find yourself fixating on technical gear or settings, try resetting your focus: reconnect with inspirations like literature, cinema, or conversations that remind you of the why behind your image. That might unstick you a little and let you get back on track. Know Your Own Creative Rules Living with your own work, and especially your “bad” photos, reveals patterns: some of the hard rules you always stick to, and the soft guidelines you're willing to break. For example, I have a near unwavering preference for straight horizon lines. In looking at my lesser work I can more easily gain an understanding as to the why behind this “issue”. For me, I learned it was about stability and feeling grounded which might not be the case for someone else, but at least I know my rules. There's No Substitute for Experience No number of photo books or outside influences can replace the impact of making your own images. Every hands-on moment of shooting, processing or printing can teach us lessons that theory or observation can't. I hope that when you spend more time with your work both good and not so good that you celebrate all those experiences, accepting errors and even bad results as essential to your creative growth. Just a reminder about the upcoming webinar. April 30th: “10 Organizational Things I Wish I Knew Early In My Photography” and if you can’t make it I’ll have a reply on my blog a few days later. Get the Podcast Direct to Your Inbox:Visit the website, click the podcast tab, and sign up to receive each new episode by email. Thank you for listening and being part of this creative journey. Remember: great photography begins not with the camera, but with a meaningful connection to what you want to see, say, and feel through your work.

Steve Bannon declared on his War Room program yesterday, “We're in a war now, so we gotta win it. And we have to win it in a smart way to make sure the blood and treasure is not needlessly spilled. But we're in it and we have to have victory.” This statement marks a significant, and very welcome, break by my old friend from those who fail to understand our time's central reality: We confront a global threat from adherents to Islam's totalitarian sharia ideology that explicitly seeks the destruction of Western civilization. Anything short of a decisive victory over sharia-supremacists – whether they are in Tehran or Texas – will embolden the rest of them who are obliged to respond by intensifying their jihad.  Steve Bannon's “Posse” are critical to our nation's survival and, I pray, will follow his courageous lead.  This is Frank Gaffney.

Last week, Donald Trump took the most courageous step of any president in our nation's history. After years of analysis, debate and efforts to negotiate a different outcome, he decided that the regime in Iran that had brought ruinous hardship to its own people and relentlessly threatened ours must be destroyed.  He bet his presidency by launching in concert with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu devastating and ongoing military operations to that end. The result was the immediate decapitation of the so-called Supreme Leader and most of his senior subordinates.  Iran has retaliated against Israel and U.S. bases and other targets in Sunni Arab nations. Thank God, the resulting casualties have been minimal to date. But unless and until the regime's dead-enders are decisively defeated or overwhelmed and removed by the Iranian people, there will doubtless be more losses.  Therefore, President Trump must resist the temptation to end the campaign to liberate the Iranian people before that goal is accomplished. Not only will that ensure the sharia-supremacists of the Shiite stripe remain dangerous enemies, but those of the Sunni one will redouble their efforts to bring “Death to America,” including here at home.  This is Frank Gaffney.

Disney World. The Magic Kingdom. How can a four-year-old girl be a little cranky in that dream destination for kids her age? Our granddaughter had been having a great day there with her mom and her cousins while her daddy was busy in meetings. She'd done all the princess stuff she loved, she'd gotten the autographs of Disney characters that she loved, she'd gone on rides she'd been looking forward to. But for some reason, by early afternoon she was just a little out of sorts. By that time, her dad was available, and he showed up to take her on some rides. And suddenly, it was like the clouds had blown away and the sun came out. She was the bouncy, happy little girl we all know again. In retrospect, I guess it was easy to diagnose why the clouds had rolled in. She was missing her Daddy! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "No Substitute For a Daddy." It's true of every one of us, even if our childhood is way behind us. There's a spot in our heart and in our life that was meant to be filled by a father. If you've been trusted by God with the awesome assignment of being a father, don't ever forget there's nothing that can take your place in the life of your son or daughter. No matter how young or how old they are. In Ephesians 6:4, our word for today from the Word of God, He speaks directly to dads: "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." We fail our children, and we fail the God who gave them to us when we continually "exasperate" them. We exasperate them by our absence. We're so busy they just get our leftovers while everyone else gets our best. And that's wrong priorities. We exasperate our children by our unavailability. We're around them, but we're not with them. We're all tied up with sports on TV or some website, checking something out, we're doing our "chores" or we're involved in our hobby or our work. We're there, but they can't have us - because from the way it looks to them, there's something always more important than they are. We exasperate our children by our criticism, too. How many of us have been wounded by the feeling that we could never be good enough for our dad? If you're always harping on what they need to improve, on what's wrong with them, that child is going to have a hard time believing they have a lot of value. The praise and encouragement of a dad is one of the most powerful life-shaping forces on earth. Our kids are also exasperated by a father's silence - he doesn't express his feelings, he doesn't show or speak his love for them. So they're never sure where they stand. And a dad can exasperate a child with just passivity - a failure to lead, to set and enforce consistent boundaries, to provide spiritual leadership for them. Maybe you're thinking about the hole you have in your life because of what your father never was for you. I call it the daddy deficit. I've got a wonderful promise from God for you in Psalm 68:4-5. "His name is the Lord...a father to the fatherless." And Psalm 10:14 declares that "You, O God...are the helper of the fatherless." God is already your Creator. He wants to be your Father - to love you, to care for you, not like the earthly father you had, but like the father you always wished you had. But first you've got to have the sins forgiven that stand between you and Him. God the Father sent His only Son, Jesus, to die to pay for those sins so you can belong to the ultimate Father you were made for. The day you put your total trust in Jesus to forgive your sins, you get a personal Savior and you get the Father that your heart is missing. You ready for that? Tell Him you want to belong to Him. Tell Him today. Go to our website and find there the verses that will show you how to be sure you belong to Him. That site is ANewStory.com. You know, as a Dad, there's a lot of regrets. He'll forgive every mistake, every sin we've ever committed. All the hurts we've inflicted, He died to pay for them. This could be your new beginning today. He's waiting to welcome you into His big ol' Father's arms this very day.

Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes.   We'll pick up this week at Section 15 of Part 5 of Tusculan Disputations, continuing to look at how the Stoic/Platonic philosophers use logic to deduce that since only virtue is within our control, happiness comes from exclusively relying on virtue, excluding all else from being considered to be truly good.https://www.epicureanfriends.com/thread/4850-episode-312-td39-word-games-are-no-substitute-for-reality/

In this episode, "No Substitute for Work," we dive into the timeless value of purposeful effort—something my Southern grandmother, Mimi, modeled daily as she hand-whipped meringue with a fork and raked leaves from the big oak tree without complaint. Her quiet diligence reflected an era when hard work was both a rhythm and a reward. We'll explore how that work ethic has evolved through history, the lasting benefits of meaningful labor, and how to define an ideal work-lifestyle that balances purpose with peace. In a world obsessed with shortcuts and automation, this episode reminds us that while tools can help, there's still no true substitute for the fulfillment that comes from honest, dedicated work. We cover a brief definition of purposeful work, work ethic, benefits of work and defining your ideal work-lifestyle. In this episode of Building the Base, Hondo Geurts and Lauren Bedula sit down with Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10), who brings a rare combination of Special Forces experience, defense entrepreneurship, and fresh congressional perspective to America's national security challenges. Drawing from his service in 3rd Special Forces Group, his journey building a weapons and munitions manufacturing company, and his current role on the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Harrigan discusses the urgent need to revolutionize America's defense industrial base. He shares his candid assessment of government as "a terrible customer," explains his groundbreaking Sky Foundry initiative to build America's first million-drone manufacturing capability, and warns that the nature of warfare has fundamentally changed from the Global War on Terror era. The conversation explores why America must shift from producing "high cost problems to our enemies' low cost solutions" to creating affordable, scalable technologies that can match the pace of modern conflict.Five key takeaways from today's episode:Personal inspiration drives public service, as Rep. Harrigan reveals how his grandfather's vivid memories of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, details he could recite perfectly even with dementia, showed him "what a formative part of his life he made a huge difference for the trajectory of the world," inspiring his own call to serve when he witnessed leadership failures during Afghanistan's fall. The nature of warfare has fundamentally changed, Congressman Harrigan explains, comparing the shift from the Global War on Terror to today's drone-dominated battlefield as the difference between "basketball and baseball" with 80% of casualties in Ukraine now caused by small, inexpensive FPV drones rather than traditional weapons systems.America currently sits at "effectively zero" drone manufacturing capability while being wholly dependent on Chinese supply chains, Rep. Harrigan warns, as adversaries like Russia and Ukraine produce millions of drones annually at costs dramatically lower than America's $20,000-30,000 per unit. The Sky Foundry initiative represents a revolutionary approach to defense manufacturing, combining government-owned facilities with private contractor intellectual property through a royalty-based system that incentivizes innovation while maintaining competition and driving costs down to $500 per drone.Success requires unwavering persistence, Rep. Harrigan emphasizes, sharing his philosophy of "never give up, never give in" when fighting for his daughters Reagan and McKinley's future, because "there is no substitute for victory" and breakthrough solutions will eventually succeed if you believe in them and keep working regardless of initial resistance.

Trump Gets It - There is No Substitute for Victory over Iran

President Trump abruptly left the G-7 meeting to work on the conflict between Israel and Iran's mullahs. Thankfully, he has explicitly said it's not to pursue a ceasefire, whose practical effect would be to deny the decisive victory Israel's security – and ours – requires.   Instead, Mr. Trump has said he's working on “something bigger” and that he wants a real end to the Iranian nuclear threat,  meaning Tehran “giving up entirely.”  Our superb “emergency briefing” yesterday showed why: The Iranian regime is committed to our destruction, not just Israel's. It's compelled by faith to lie in any negotiation. And it'll use anything short of complete defeat to regroup, rearm and resume its war on Judeo-Christian civilization.  I pray the Trump team, and you, will go to the video tape at VictoryCo.org and help Israel achieve the only acceptable outcome – namely, decisive victory.  This is Frank Gaffney.

In this sermon titled “No Substitute,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones opens the word of God and confronts the tendency to depreciate preaching at the expense of other forms of activity. As those who have the good news, Christians must tell the truth. Other agencies, politicians, cults, false religions, and nonprofits can do their work, but they cannot preach the gospel. They can ease the pain of the human condition, but they cannot change the heart. The primary task of the church is not to make a person happy, good, or even well off. The primary task of the church is to deliver the truth about humanity and the remedy in Christ. The danger is that the church will tinker with the general symptoms and not address the cause. It takes a specialist to isolate the radical problem and deal with it. This is the work of every preacher, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones. When the church takes care of its primary purpose, God works through it to provide relief to others. The Protestant Reformation birthed hospitals, schools, many other relief efforts, and provided a stimulus to science, literature, etc. Dr. Lloyd-Jones adds that the preaching of the gospel from the pulpit, applied by the Holy Spirit, has been a means of dealing with personal problems that the preacher knows nothing about. Counseling has its place, but most counseling will be done from the pulpit. Anything else is a failure to fulfill the great mandate given to the church.

It's hard to overstate the importance of this week's meeting between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. If they stand together, as Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill did in World War II's darkest days when Britain was otherwise alone, Israel will – with our material support – defeat our mutual enemies. If a united front is not the outcome, those enemies will be convinced they'll destroy not only the Jewish State but – in due course – America, as well. The regrouping, rearming, and preparations for renewed attacks on Israel now being undertaken by Hamas and other Sharia- supremacists cannot continue without dire consequences for both our nations and the Free World, more generally. We must, therefore, pray that mistakes like Biden's calamitous Gaza “ceasefire” are reversed in favor of a shared commitment to accept, in the words of Douglas MacArthur, “no substitute for victory.” This is Frank Gaffney.

In general, humans as a species have a fair amount of self-awareness. And if we're honest, we all know our weak points. Those places where character is lacking a bit.One of our biggest weaknesses is that we just want stuff. Bigger house, more expensive car—that kind of thing. In those moments, we're missing out on a big prize. Our focus is wrong.Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”The Bible—the Word of God itself—shows exactly what our priorities should be. God knows us far better than we could ever know ourselves, and He tells us that we have it exactly backwards. We look for the stuff, and then tack on the God stuff later. In fact, turn that around and that's how we should be doing life. Look for God first, and then later He'll give us the desires of our heart. Because our hearts will then be aligned with His perfect will for our lives.Try this approach, and see if it works for you. What we'll also find as a bonus is peace that the world can't give us…that stuff can't give us. When you seek first a relationship with your Creator, you find that material possessions are no substitute for knowing Him.Let's pray.Lord, thank you for our relationship with you. Thank you for loving us through our sin. In Jesus' name, amen.Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Let us remember that nothing is a substitute for earnest prayer. Nothing can take its place. Today's church does many important things, but we must make prayer a priority. Main Points:1. This is a remarkable story of God's power and deliverance, but what stands out to me the most from this story is the commitment of the church to prayer. This miracle happened in the middle of the night. The church was not asleep because they knew the next day Peter would be put on trial. The church was having an all-night prayer meeting to ask God to protect Peter.2. It was a desperate situation but I believe they remembered that Jesus told them to “ask and it will be given you.” The Greek word tells us that they were “straining in prayer”.  It was not a casual prayer, “Lord, bless Peter tonight.” No, it was a desperate prayer, a fervent prayer, and an earnest prayer. They were seeking God. They were crying out to God for Peter's deliverance. This is intercessory prayer.3. When was the last time you gathered with other believers and prayed an earnest prayer? Let's recommit ourselves to prayer. The God who hears will answer.Today's Scripture Verses:Acts 12:5-10 -  “So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists. Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.”James 5:16 - “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”Mark 11:17 - “My house shall be called a house of prayer.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group
