Today on episode 18 I want to welcome Kenzie King. If you listened to last week's interview with Michael Langer you will recognize Kenzie as Michael's girlfriend. Kenzie and Michael walked away from lucrative engineering careers in Houston, Texas and moved into a van. Only months later, seemingly on a whim, they smashed the Pacific Crest Trail, hiking over 2,600 miles across California, Oregon, and Washington.I promise that this is not a retelling of last week's story. Kenzie has a very unique perspective on their journey. And regardless of your thoughts on the backpacking or thru-hiking, Kenzie shares a number of insightful opinions on the evolving dynamics of workplace culture, relationships in trying environments, and levels of financial or emotional security necessary to make bold and truly lasting changes in our lives. Hang on all the way to the end for some of the best moments of this conversation. Today on episode 17 I want to give a very warm welcome to my guest Michael Langer, who along with his girlfriend Kenzie, walked away from lucrative engineering careers in Houston, Texas and moved into a van. Only months later, seemingly on a whim, they smashed the Pacific Crest Trail, hiking over 2,600 miles across California, Oregon, and Washington.Today we will hear Michael's perspective on this wild and unexpected journey, but it doesn't end there. Next week stay tuned for an interview with Kenzie King, who shares her own unique perspective and motivations for their abrupt shift in lifestyle. After all, it takes a special couple to trade a solid paycheck for a heavy pack and mosquitos for five months. Topics Discussed with Michael Langer:Desire to leave well-paying jobs in Houston, TX and travel in a vanThe financial dilemma of saying “I quit.” More on how Michael and Kenzie funded their journey.Mental health and the need for a breakExposing who we really areHow Michael and Kenzie hiked the entire PCT having only backpacked three consecutive nights!Logistical considerations of hiking the PCT (gear, re-supply points, pack weight, day-in-the-life routines)Transition from the trail to society: culture shock and finding meaningful workStories from the trail: people, weather, and wildlifeWhy Michael doesn't see van living as a long-term way of life Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeSubscribe to the website: SUBSCRIBE ME! The stories that you have been telling yourself about yourself and your value or lack thereof go with you, too.” (1:45-2:00) “The ego, when it's decided something about ourselves, will seek out ways to prove it.” “The crazy thing about our egos and the nasty, insidious thing about our egos is they're always looking to prove our thoughts about ourselves. And if your baseline thoughts are, ‘I'm not worthy, I'm not valuable, I should be ashamed of my situation, and it's all my fault,' then you're going to remember the experiences that prove that, that align with that. "Entrepreneurship"... Should I Quit My Job?
This podcast is going to focus on how to manage your career during a crisis. The current crisis happens to be a new virus, but in the future there could be a different crisis and these tips will still apply. Think about Y2K or the crash of 2008. These were all events that impacted the world of work in different ways. I want to start with making sure you know and understand how you react, function, and manage during a crisis situation. Being able to identify this will help you figure out the best way to move forward and where your blind spots might be during a crisis. I believe there are 3 types of professionals in a crisis: 1. The level headed professional 2. The over-reacting professional 3. The I don’t care it’s probably not real anyway professional The point of identifying this in yourself is being realistic about how you handle and manage extremely stressful situations and immediate change. A crisis like this can have a major impact on the economy and jobs. This episode will give you actions to think about taking when it comes to your career. I will outline different scenarios you might encounter and provide you with actions to manage the situation. I reference season 1 of the podcast "Should I Quit My Job?" and the episode on How to Set Intentional Career Goals.
