Nicky Jam: How to Forgive Yourself From the Past & Free Yourself From Shame and Trauma

Are you struggling to overcome your past trauma? Are you looking for ways to heal from it? Today, Jay sits down with renowned reggaeton artist and songwriter Nicky Jam. Nicky's music career took off after a series of successful mixtapes and collaborations with other artists, including Daddy Yankee, with whom he formed the iconic duo Los Cangris. His work has earned him international fame and multiple awards, establishing him as a major influence in the reggaeton and Latin trap genres.  Nicky recounts his first foray into music, packing groceries and freestyling at a supermarket, which inadvertently launched his career despite his young age and the informal nature of his work. He opens up about the difficulties of his upbringing, including his mother's struggle with substance abuse and prostitution, shaping his understanding of normalcy and family life. This background set the stage for his initial break into the music industry, where early rejections and setbacks paved the way for his eventual success in the Puerto Rican mixtape scene and beyond. Together with Jay, Nicky also discusses the challenges of maintaining authenticity and personal happiness amidst fame, expressing discomfort with being seen as a role model and emphasizing the importance of understanding and support for mental health, especially for men in the public eye. Despite ongoing struggles with PTSD, anxiety, and the scars of his traumatic past, Nicky remains hopeful and driven, looking forward to continuing his career and making a positive impact through his work and personal experiences. In this interview, you'll learn: How to handle early setbacks How to deal with the pressure of expectations How to use personal struggles as a source of strength How to maintain creativity under pressure How to find redemption through new opportunities How to help others through your work Nicky's story demonstrates that with unwavering determination and a genuine approach, it's possible to transform challenging beginnings into legacies of success and enduring influence. Roberto Alomar was not just a five-tool Hall of Famer; he was a magician on the diamond, a generational talent whose defensive wizardry left teammates and opponents breathless. Yet, despite his twelve All-Star selections and ten Gold Glove awards, he has remained one of the most contentious and enigmatic characters in baseball's history. Roberto Alomar: The Complicated Life and Legacy of a Baseball Hall of Famer (Roman & Littlefield, 2024) is the first complete, balanced biography of arguably the greatest second baseman in the history of Major League Baseball. It covers Alomar's impressive career, his altercation with umpire John Hirschbeck and their eventual friendship, the allegations stemming from Alomar's personal life, never-before-heard stories about his conflicts with both minor and major league teammates, and his global influence. When Roberto Alomar retired in 2005, his place as one of baseball's all-time greats was unquestioned. But the controversies that always seem to follow him make Alomar's legacy far from clear. Drawing on dozens of personal interviews with Alomar's former teammates and opponents, Roberto Alomar pulls back the curtain on one of the most significant, divisive, and perplexing figures in baseball history. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. 5 Cs of History: Complexity, #2 of 4. Josephine Baker's life story - both what we know and what we don't/can't know - is fascinating. For our purposes today, her life story is a perfect case study for complexity in historical thinking. Not only was she an icon of contradictions, but the way she lived and interacted with the world has allowed historians and feminist scholars to really tease out the complexity of her lifetime. Josephine Baker lived from 1906 until 1975. She was both a Civil Rights activist and a performer who used blackface and racialized tropes to entertain. She was both a woman who had intimate (probably sexual) relationships with other women, and exiled an adopted son when he came out to her as gay. She was both a deeply private woman and opened her home to the public like an amusement park. And for most of her life she lived in France, which was both deeply enamored with Black American culture and music and deeply racist. As Josephine Baker shows us, historical moments, like life stories, are rarely simple. Writer Emile Zola was once so poor, he pawned all his clothes and kept only a single bedsheet to sleep in. But by the time he moved into the quiet rue de Bruxelles below Place de Clichy, he had become a respected member of the middle class, a well-known journalist and a prolific novelist. Paris-born, Zola was a complicated man, and in this podcast, we talk about why he had two apartments simultaneously in this neighborhood, as well as his brave stance for justice. His defense of Captain Dreyfus led to his temporary exile--and possibly to his murder. Visit my website for some images to give you a better feel for the history here. In this episode of Beyond Networth Podcast, we have Dr. Chris Brown, an assistant professor at Utah Tech University and CEO of Elevate Practices. Listen in as he shares why he is in education and his insights on what and how education should be. Don't miss his S.I.M.P.L.E  analogy to make a complicated and messy life easier. Preview of this episode: 16:07 - “Like Parkinson's law, the work will expand to fill the time allotted for it. So we filled that plate. The issue is once we started getting 11 or 13-inch plates, well guess what? We still fill those up and now we just are obese. So the question is, can I one artificially limit the size of the plate, right? Can I time block an activity that might take other people four hours, I'm only gonna give it an hour and it's gonna take an hour.” 29:45 - “The Mark Twain quote, I always tell them is “Don't let the degree get in the way of your education”. That's really key too because if I ask them usually like if you could pay me whatever you're paying over four years and I hand you a piece of paper to your degree, how many of you would do it now?” 30:43 - “So reading now becomes stupid and boring. And why would I ever read? Because I hate reading. So don't read stuff you hate reading. But they have to read stuff in high school, right? So I think they're taught that school equals education, which equals boring. School equals boring sometimes but with education, it shouldn't, definitely not.” 53:18 - “I think there are people who think, because I do (X) I'm religious cuz I go to church, I'm religious. I remember that you guys both served missions. I served a mission. I got this letter from someone in my state presidency back home and the quote was, “going to church doesn't make you a spiritual person. Just like sitting in a garage doesn't make you a Cadillac or something.” 62:44 - “Regret can last forever. Discipline takes time right now but this is like Jim Roh's quote– but regret can last forever, right? I think that we've been sold something false there.” Learn more about Dr.Brown: Website - www.elevatepractices.com  LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/brownchris

Everyone followed the fairytale: The handsome kid, a born athlete, rises to stardom, gets the championships, the money, the shoes. It was a superhero story brought to life – and throughout the meteoric rise, Michael Jordan's dad, James, was always by his side. Their identities are forever linked: even in death James was often described not by name, but as “Michael Jordan's dad.” But who was James independent of his son and how would their link haunt his death?  In this episode, we delve into the complicated life of James Jordan in the shadow of his superstar son and the web of conspiracies people wove in the aftermath of his death. One of the most complex characters of the 20th century, Abraham J. Heschel's (1907-1972) life experience in many ways mirrored the Jewish search for identity in modern times. Born into an aristocratic Polish chassidic family, he shifted over to academic studies in Berlin. Escaping the Nazi regime, he settled in the United States, eventually receiving a position in the Jewish Theological Seminary.  He lectured and wrote on Jewish mysticism, philosophy and chassidic thought. Leaving the ivory tower in his later years, he became an activist in the Civil Rights Movement alongside Martin Luther King Jr. In all probability, Heschel has the distinction of being the only one to have marched in both the Rabbi's march on Washington in 1943, as well as the third Selma Civil Rights march in Alabama in 1965.   Subscribe To Our Podcast on:   PodBean: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/   Follow us on Twitter or Instagram at @Jsoundbites You can email Yehuda at yehuda@yehudageberer.com
