You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial.  Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Newport has more colonial homes in use than any other location in the US? There are more than 60 buildings still standing built prior to 1765. Now for our feature story: Good news! Connecticut is planning to provide full access this summer to its outdoor recreation areas including state parks, camp grounds, shoreline beaches, boat launches and inland swimming spots. That's after providing partial access to its park system last summer even at the height of the pandemic. Katie Dykes, the commissioner of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said the state began accepting reservations for some cabins and campgrounds on Friday and most indoor facilities, including park buildings, museums, nature centers and public restrooms, will be open starting on Memorial Day weekend. “Really, we're going back to the way we were before the pandemic,” Dykes said, speaking at Peoples State Forest in Barkhamsted on Friday. “We close parks when parking lots get full, and we can't accommodate more cars. That's what we're looking forward to this coming summer.” Dykes said plans could change and the DEEP is working with the state Department of Public Health to ensure public safety. She said group gatherings, including weddings, will be allowed in line with the state limit of 200 people at outdoor events. The state set a record with more than 10 million visitors to its parks last year, a 10% increase over 2019 numbers, despite restrictions on capacity and parking, Dykes said. This year, permanent food concessions will open on May 29 at Rocky Neck, Hammonasset Beach, Gillette Castle, Silver Sands and Sherwood Island State Parks, with visitors required to stay 6-feet apart while standing in line. Masks wearing and social distancing will still be encouraged, even at beaches, except during swimming, officials said. Gov. Ned Lamont said also on Friday that he will ask the state Bond Commission to approve $2 million in bonding for repairs and maintenance work in the state parks, forests and wildlife management areas. There will be free parking for state residents and free bus service to many of recreation areas on weekends, he said. Lamont said: “We're making an extra, extra, extra effort this summer to make sure that our kids have access to free and affordable summer camp; we have access to all of our parks and museums and aquariums". And for more about the latest stories in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from the Ocean Community YMCA in Westerly. They're looking for a full-time finance associate to help crunch the numbers, keep up with billing and dues, and to help with all facets of the business's finances. Pay starts at $38,000 per year. If you'd like to learn more or apply, you can do so at the link in our episode description: https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?advn=6385150304015669&vjk=29fbf5c0f1dd0e6e Today we're remembering the life of Joseph Bennett Brearley who passed away peacefully on April 1 in The Villages, FL. Born in the village of Ashaway, he lived in Westerlybefore moving to Florida in 2006. He attended Westerly schools and served in the US Army from 1954 – 1957. He was employed by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics where he was promoted to Foreman and General Foreman. He retired in 1992 after 35 years of service. He joined the Masons in 1960 and dedicated a significant portion of his life to doing good works. His individual Masonic accolades and achievements are too numerous to mention, but he served his fellow man in several prominent positions throughout his 60-year Masonic career. This included serving as the Master of Franklin Lodge in Westerly in 1980, Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter in 1987, and Most Worshipful Grand Master for the State of Rhode Island in 2003. He was also awarded the 33rd degree, an honor conferred on members who have made major contributions to society or to Masonry in general. He was a member and former Elder of the Babcock Presbyterian Church in Ashaway and a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Fruitland Park, FL. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Anna, his 5 children, his brother, 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Ashaway, RI. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Joseph's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! FORT WALTON BEACH — Formal charges of child abuse and child neglect have been brought against three Silver Sands employees who were arrested in January, according to a press release from the State Attorney for the First Judicial Court. The new charges, which are third degree felonies, replace a more serious charge of aggravated child abuse that was levied in January. They are in the same classification as the charges Kenwood ESE teacher Marlynn Stillions faced. She was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison. The employees, Margaret Wolthers, an Exceptional Student Education teacher, and two aides, Diana Lacroix and Carolyn Madison, are accused of "unlawfully and willfully" abusing three young children between Sept. 1, 2018 and Nov. 18, 2018. The children are autistic, according to their original arrest reports.
