Andy Belsey picks up again on the New Beginnings series, showing us a way that we can speak up for Jesus. He has based his talk on the book The Art of Neighbouring. There's lots of training about how to do evangelism but evangelism is something that scares many of us! Very few of us actually like doing Evangelism. Even when we want to share our faith, many people don't want to hear about God anyway! Talking about Jesus to other Christians in church might seem easy, but when you try to with those who are doubtful and sceptical, it is often a recipe for disaster. Doing it on your own can be very intimidating and frustrating.
It appears that a number of our neighbouring countries might be willing to accept deportees from the USA as part of negotiations towards less punitive trade tariffs. US President Donald Trump's push for Arab nations to take in Palestinians to 'clean out' Gaza could be a genuine suggestion. He's said Egypt and Jordan should take in Gazans - with the Strip extensively damaged and people dying. Greg Barton, a noted professor of global Islamic politics, says Trump is 'flying a kite' to see the response, and what he can away with. "Donald Trump will typically say things that are contradictory - and allow himself plausible deniability, so he can walk his way back from this one, but he's clearly got an interest in seeing if it's got traction." The illegal organ trade is targeting the desperately poor from within India and countries like Myanmar and Nepal. Driven to desperation by their circumstances, they are willing to sell their organs to those who can pay for them in India. A vast network of agents, corrupt officials and hospitals ensures that the affluent jump the queue for organs in defiance of the law. The trend we call the Exodus to Affordable Lifestyle is among the most powerful forces impacting real estate markets across Australia. It's a trend that been around for at least the past 10 years, with more and more residents of the biggest cities relocating to smaller cities or regional areas in search of a different and more affordable lifestyle, empowered by technology which allows many people to work remotely. It was NOT created by the Covid lockdowns. It was under way long before Covid appeared in 2020 and it continues to have considerable momentum now that we are well beyond the pandemic restrictions. But media continues to perpetuate the fiction that this was a Covid thing – and to express surprise that, now that we no longer have lockdowns and border restrictions, people are not all moving back to the big cities. The latest quarterly edition of the Regional Movers Index confirms that this trend is as strong as ever – and it has generated more shock/horror/amazement from journalists who think it was all about the Covid lockdowns. One article in major media expressed surprise that “Australia is not going back to the pre-pandemic way of life”. And there's a very good reason for that: this trend has very little to do with the pandemic. The Regional Movers Index – which is a collaboration between the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) and the Commonwealth Bank - has once again reported that there are far more people relocating to regional areas than making a move in the opposite direction to major cities, with a 27 per cent difference in the June 2024 Quarter. What the latest figures confirm, according to RAI chief executive Liz Ritchie, is that “the population movement we're seeing is a sustained trend”. Ritchie says: “Regional Australia has become the nation's new frontier.” The latest data highlighted a number of specific hotspots that are reaping the benefits of Australia's romance with the regions. Lake Macquarie, which sits beside Newcastle in NSW, has emerged as one of Australia's most popular destinations for movers, securing an almost 5 per cent share of net internal migration over the past year. Neighbouring local government areas on the NSW south coast such as the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla both experienced strong annual and quarterly surges in movement, according to the report. Large centres within a few hours' drive of capitals remain popular with many movers, however the regions that experienced the biggest population changes over the past 12 months were generally further afield, including Townsville (Qld), Mid-West Regional (NSW), Strathbogie (Vic), Murray Bridge (SA), Greater Geraldton (WA) and George Town (Tas). Approximately three-quarters of the city dwellers who made the move to the regions in the past three months found new homes in either regional NSW or Victoria, confirming that Sydney continues to shed the highest number of residents, followed by Melbourne. But that's not to say that Queensland's appeal has waned entirely, with regional Queensland's share of net city outflows sitting at 19 per cent, even though it was as high as 41 per cent this time last year. Indeed, the Sunshine Coast has retained its title as the nation's most popular destination for relocators, accounting for a 14 per cent share of net internal migration. The Gold Coast has slipped down in the rankings, however, with the city experiencing a net outflow of people to other regional areas. Western Australia also proved attractive for relocators, with Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Capel and Northam all seeing an inflow of new residents. The overall picture is that the trend of people moving from Sydney and Melbourne to regional areas continues strongly, with large numbers of big city dwellers still seeking a different and more affordable lifestyle.

Hamilton city councillor Andrew Bydder is on the defence, after delivering an expletive-laden rant to a neighbouring council. In a letter directed at Waipā District Council, Bydder used derogatory language to voice his displeasure with the placement of a third bridge in Cambridge. He has since claimed he tried to be polite to the council - but it never got him anywhere. "I did this because it cannot be ignored. It was the only way to get a reaction, and to get the issue dealt with. I'd rather not do it this way, but if it's the only way they react, then I have to." Myanmar's military junta, which took power in a coup in February 2021, is increasingly facing armed resistance. Last October, an alliance of ethnic rebel groups and pro-democracy activists launched a major offensive across the country. In response, the junta recently announced mandatory conscription for all men aged 18 to 35 and women aged between 18 and 27. As a result, thousands of young people are now fleeing the country to avoid being called up. Most are heading to neighbouring Thailand, which is bracing for an influx of refugees. FRANCE 24's William de Tamaris reports from the Thai border.
Yesterday, Africa Daily heard from two Sudanese men about how a year of war has forever changed their lives. But the impact is also being felt beyond Sudan's borders: South Sudan's oil industry – its main income generator – has been heavily impacted because routes to the coast for export have been cut off. Chad and South Sudan are hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees each. And in border areas, armed groups have been growing more active and refugees report extortion, brutal attacks and murder. In response, many regional leaders have attempted to bring the leaders of the two warring parties together for talks: military chief General Abdel-Fattah Burhan and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the commander of Rapid Support Forces, who is more commonly known as Hemedti. But mistakes and perceived insults mean little has been achieved from their efforts. So can African countries do anything to stop the conflict?
Last week, Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a national disaster due to a prolonged drought crisis, saying the country needed $2 billion to address hunger. Zimbabwe, once a regional food producer, now grapples with high inflation and scarcity, intensified by climate change-induced droughts. This crisis affects not only food production but also electricity generation, leading to power cuts. And it's not just Zimbabwe. Neighbouring countries are also struggling, with Zambia and Malawi also declaring drought a national disaster. BBC Africa Daily's Alan Kasujja hears from an impacted farmer in Zambia and hears from the BBC's Shingai Nyoka how people are coping in the region.

In February this year, El Salvador's president Nayib Bukele won re-election with nearly 85% of the vote. His flagship policy after he came to power in 2019 has been the mass arrest of thousands of alleged gang members, mainly young men.It is estimated that over 100,000 people are now behind bars as part of his crime crackdown. The round-ups have been hugely popular with El Salvador's people as it has improved security and neighbouring countries are taking note. But critics say following Bukele's approach could threaten democracy, not just in El Salvador but across the continent. So on this week's Inquiry, we're asking: Will neighbouring countries follow El Salvador's lead on crime?Contributors: Carlos Dada, director of El Faro, an online newspaper based in El Salvador Katherine Saunders-Hastings, a lecturer in Latin American Studies at the University of London's Institute of the Americas. “The hardest thing is not being able to help someone beyond what you are able to do with the little medication you have. You examine your patients but don't have what you need to solve their medical needs. There are more than 20 such shelters in eastern Chad, housing at least 400, 000 people. This humanitarian crisis has been triggered by a conflict led by Sudanese army head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, otherwise known as Hemedti. In 2021, the two generals staged a coup, but in recent months they have taken up arms against each other in a power struggle. The civil war has claimed thousands of lives. With the number of Sudanese refugees crossing into Chad expected to reach 600, 000 by the end of 2023, how will the country deal with the influx?

The second-largest lake in Africa, Lake Tanganyika is adorned with its sandy beaches that span four nations. But the ravages of overfishing and pollution have taken a toll on its delicate ecosystem. In a bid to rejuvenate its biodiversity, Burundi and its three neighbouring countries have taken the unprecedented decision to impose a three-month fishing ban on the lake every year, from May 15 to August 15. This measure, though detrimental to the livelihoods of resellers and fishermen, is crucial in facilitating the resurgence of the region's beloved fish. FRANCE 24's Clément Di Roma reports.
In this week's Focus, we turn to the tense frontier between Russia and Finland. The rapport between these neighbouring nations has soured significantly in the wake of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Historically, their mutual border has been a theatre of confrontation and conflict. Currently, Finland is taking drastic measures by erecting a formidable barbed wire fence along this boundary. According to authorities in Helsinki, the intention behind this undertaking is twofold: ensuring the nation's protection and enhancing scrutiny over entries from Russia.
The month-long conflict in Sudan in East Africa is damaging the economies of its neighbours. The United Nations has made a record-breaking appeal for $3 billion worth of support for Sudan. But with thousands fleeing their homes for neighbouring countries, the critical port of Port Sudan virtually out of action, and fears for the security of major oil pipelines that cross the country - the conflict threatens a major regional crisis. The issue of remote versus home-working is once again in the headlines after Twitter and Tesla boss Elon Musk said working from home is ‘morally wrong' – because it was unfair on those who could not work remotely. More companies are beginning to insist on their employees attending the office more often – with the New York-based asset management company Black Rock the latest to insist that workers go into the office at least four days a week. We look at whether home-working days are numbered… And - a small bakery in France is the proud of owner of a very special accolade - bakers of the best baguette in Paris. We then go on to talk about some mutual live fire training we put on for a neighbouring department, getting them out of their comfort zone and picking up new skills to take back and show the rest of their team. WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. Communities in northern Ghana give refuge to up to 4,000 people fleeing rebel violence in Burkina Faso, but they now fear that some former armed vigilantes may be amongst the refugees. Somalia's government says it has killed 130 al-Shabab militants, including top commanders, with regional and international assistance. Are the strongholds of the jihadists being whittled away by successful offensives? And the United States' ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield, has just concluded a trip to Africa and tells us how the US plans to forge stronger diplomatic ties across the continent.

A decades-long civil war has killed thousands and displaced millions in the eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi have also been sucked into the conflict. DR Congo accuses Kigali of sponsoring the M23 rebels, which have recently escalated the conflict after a period of calm. Rwanda denies this, but President Kagame recently acknowledged he was preparing for the worst…with many people suggesting he meant a possible armed confrontation. However, on Wednesday leaders of the two countries met in Angola and agreed to de-escalate the situation. So is there hope of bringing the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo under control?
Tracing Russia's vast border, which meets those of 14 other countries, helps tells the history of Russia itself. From its imperial past to Soviet-era expansions and contractions leading up to its current war of aggression in Ukraine today, the Russian border is a landscape of uneasy uncertainty for many of the country's immediate neighbours. Erika Fatland is a Norwegian writer whose work has focused on issues that range from terrorism to travel and cultural history. Her 2020 book, The Border, followed the path of Russia's border over thousands of miles in order to understand how countries approach being a neighbour to a temperamental superpower. Following the tragic events in Ukraine, the book is even more relevant and Erika joined our producer Catharine Hughes to talk about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
