Subjectively, yes. There are games I would pay 80 for and not feel bad. Although one problem may be that you don't know until you own it and have played it - whether it is worth it. Profits in the game industry have never been higher, so why is Randy saying he needs the real fans to shell out 80 bucks for a game? What makes a game "high end" in his mind, and thus worth the extra money? The fact is: 80 dollar games are coming. And that means that the market is likely going to shrink. F2P is going to continue to dominate because most people will play that and only occasionally buy other games. And maybe that's okay. Personally I think that will cause a bigger contraction than expected, but again, maybe that is for the best. Randy only wants real fans buying Borderlands anyway.

Jon Jordan talks to Mythical Games' CEO John Linden about the success of NFL Rivals, the forthcoming launch of FIFA Rivals and Pudgy Party, and how he expects to hit 100 million wallets in the next 18 months. [4:26] 65% of Mythical's revenue is now generated from NFT trading in NFL Rivals, up from 20%. [5:12] We have an enormous plan for NFL Rivals in 2025 with PVP mode, more social interaction. [7:20] The game design challenge of not being able to reset NFT players at the start of each season. [9:29] The most significant thing we're done in web3 is the Quick Trade NFT bundling option. [12:11] On average, there are around 50,000 open orders for NFL Rivals NFTs at any time. [13:51] NFL as a brand is becoming global, we've reupped our licensing deal for the coming years. [14:52] Madden has 25 million players. FIFA Mobile had 500 million. That's the appeal of soccer. [15:54] FIFA Rivals is PVP, with an action real-time strategy style, and with an esports angle. [18:00] NFL Rivals is higher rated by its players on app stores than Madden. [21:28] Pudgy Party is a F2P mobile game competing with Stumble Guys. "It's awesome." [24:20] Pudgy Party might be released on additional platforms [consoles] at some point. [26:12] "Our goal was to add 3 games in 2025 but we'll signed 4 this month alone." [26:38] "I think we'll have 100 million wallets within 6 quarters [18 months]." [28:00] Our focus is experienced game developers, not crypto devs. [28:58] I don't think the narrative for web3 games is profit, it's about expressing digital identity. [31:29] Interoperability will be the option to trade NFTs across games using Quick Trade. [32:15] A lot of the fundamental pieces of web3 gaming are working. The future is about better UX. [33:04] Today, someone could sell an NFL Rivals' NFT and cash it out to spend on a debit card. [34:35] We're thinking about how AI agents can help players, but they shouldn't play the game.

Episode 24: The best free indie games money can't buy

Indieventure

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2024 116:03

The last quarter of 2024 is somehow already upon us, and while it's definitely too early to be putting up the Christmas decorations (bombastically side-eyeing my local pub there), it is the time of year when many of us stop buying so much stuff for ourselves so we can write wish lists, and/or start saving up our hobby money to spend on the people we love instead. Which makes this a totally seasonally appropriate episode and not an excuse for Rebecca to launch a thorough examination into one of her many special interests: free-to-play games. The free-to-play model has quite a few negative connotations associated with it, not entirely unfairly; but the Indieventure gang are here to make the case that to dismiss all F2P titles is to ignore the wide range of what's on offer in the space, especially amongst indie games. To that end, prepare for a big old chat about our favourite free indies, including Battle For Polytopia; Butterfly Soup; Doki Doki Literature Club; If On A Winter's Night, Four Travelers; Indigo Park; Interview with the Whisperer; Lily's Well; Marie's Room; Max Gentlemen; Our Life: Beginnings & Always; Pineapple On Pizza; Samsara Room (by Rusty Lake); Simulacra: Pipe Dreams; Slice and Dice; Start Again: A Prologue (prototype prequel to In Stars & Time and not technically free it turns out, but very cheap and just generally germane to the conversation); South Scrimshaw; Sucker for Love: Prelude; Supermarket Simulator: Prologue; and the mobile port of Vampire Survivors. Two things of note here: one, this is maybe the first time we've dedicated significant podcast chat to the subject of indie mobile games specifically; and two, everyone who feels like we're constantly trying to bankrupt them with wishlistable titles, rejoice! This episode doesn't need to cost you a penny. Unless, that is, you decide to keep listening to our new temporary segment! With GOTY voting rapidly approaching, we've decided that it's not enough to check in with what we've all been playing every couple of months, and instead we're going to start updating you on all the cool stuff we've been checking out in every episode. Rachel and Liam have both had their professional reviewer hats on to check out The Plucky Squire and Shogun Showdown, respectively; while Rebecca — fashionably late after several months dedicated to playing hefty AAA games for her day job — has finally arrived at Thank Goodness You're Here, which turns out to be brilliant! Who knew?! As ever, we end on hyperfixations — and would you believe it, we've all been playing some video games? Rebecca has finally completed her three-year-long mission to play all 10 visual novels in that iconic series about gay lawyers, having just wrapped up the recently-released Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. Liam keeps the Capcom hype train chugging along with his love for another of their latest game preservation projects, the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. And you'll be pleased to know that we're all being very on-brand, because Rachel has been playing Frostpunk 2, which may be one of the very few city building simulators out there to actually narratively justify getting a sequel. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Alas, poor Concord, we hardly knew thee. That's right, Sony's next big foray into the wild world of live service shooters, is no more. And the real kicker? It barely lasted two weeks. This week, Zak and Aaron sit down to discuss the unprecedented failure of Concord. In addition to enumerating some of the factors that led to the AAA game's unceremonious sunsetting (namely questionable character design and a general lack of innovation in a decade-old genre), our intrepid hosts also speculate on the title's tentative future. Just for good measure, they also spend some time dunking on internet imbeciles who blame this mess on Concord being "too woke."Please, enjoy.Listen to Beach Girl on SpotifyCheck out edouggieart on EtsyCheck out even more edouggieart on Instagram

Not the record it wanted... But a record nonetheless. In a shock move, just 10 days after it released, Sony announced that Concord is being pulled offline, and the dozens who bought it will get refunds. Does this mean that it is dead forever? There's some debate. It could come back as F2P - but then it may also just get totally shelved. This is probably very bad news for Sony's next big Live Services game, Marathon. Will Sony, and the industry at large learn a lesson from this? Yes. Will it be the right lesson? No.

Max Fu is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Nyan Heroes and has a successful track record building brands and communities across digital media, web3, and gaming spaces. In his CEO role, Max has taken the fledgling company to their next phase, having secured $10 million in seed funding from reputable global investors to accelerate the development of Nyan Heroes while growing the team on a global scale with best-in-class talent and a network of strategic partnerships. His vision for their ambitious project aims to challenge public perception of what web3 gaming can be, with a F2P play-to-earn battle royale/third-person action shooter that stands on its own with AAA-quality gameplay, visual fidelity, and balanced competitive multiplayer experiences. Prior to Nyan Heroes, he served as the COO of Unicorn Pop and collaborated with some of the world's largest companies: Google, Netflix, and Samsung. Max oversaw operations, strategy, and product development and led multiple teams to execute at a high level. During his tenure, he built digital communities from the ground up, which have grown to 30 million members to date across various platforms, including the YouTube channel which was ranked fastest growing and the most subscribed in Australia in 2019. Before following his passion in the burgeoning technology sector, he went to school to be a surgeon by earning his Bachelor's Degrees in both Medicine and Surgery, where he became the youngest surgical trainee in at the time. He has built a studio of both heavy hitters in the web3 space and veteran game developers from AAA studios including Sony Playstation, Ubisoft, and Bioware. Max, 36, earned his medical degree at University of New South Wales, Australia's leading research and teaching institution. He is based in Singapore where he cohabitates with his four cats. In his free time, he continues to work with animal rescue organizations like Best Friends Society. Max supports and regularly donates to Vivita Singapore, a creativity accelerator for kids, and partnered with the organization to create a Roblox Game Development Competition, where youths get to engage with elements of game design and compete for the best game. Learn how game developers are merging the best of web2 and web3 to create games that are fun and engaging in both traditional and innovative ways. Explore token utility within a game's economy – as well as the role of tokens in Web3 games more broadly. Understand how VC funding can impact game design and token utility. Get insights on the role of DAOs – and whether they make sense for a business organization at all. Learn about how to utilize web2 growth strategies and target web2 audiences – and why pure web3 games simply can't grow the way that web2 games can. Joining us is Corey Wright, CEO of Honeyland. A lifelong entrepreneur, he launched his first business in college – nearly 20 years ago – and has launched, scaled, and sold more than a half dozen businesses since. In 2021 Corey launched Hexagon Studios, a web3 gaming studio. Their first title, Honeyland, is in major app stores and is one of the top mobile games on Solana. Takeaways Products should build hype, hype should not build the product. Integrating Web3 elements, such as a token economy, can enhance the gameplay experience and create new opportunities for player engagement. The decision to include a token in a Web3 game should be based on the specific needs and goals of the game, rather than being a default requirement. Token success requires three things: 1) A single token economy, 2) a fixed supply, and 3) deflationary direction. User acquisition strategies for Web3 games may involve targeting a Web2 audience and leveraging traditional marketing channels. True decentralization, for most projects, is unhealthy. DAOs have utility – but not as business organizations. Many web3 companies are doubling risk by reinventing both game design and business structure at the same time. If you're anything like me, nothing makes you lose interest in a game quicker than the words "always online". Or "free-to-play". Or "connected experience", or whatever other marketing terms they've come up with for "live service grindfest that sucks". Sometimes they don't even tell you upfront that it's a GAAS title, leaving it up to the prospective audience to divine this information from visual cues in gameplay trailers like... three distinct types of in-game currency, numbers popping out of enemies heads, and the whole thing having that unmistakable whiff of a project that no involved creative could ever muster real enthusiasm for. The core of a good idea spoiled by shareholder demands. Etc. It wouldn't be so bad if every single effing game didn't seem to ship with live service elements nowadays. But still, sometimes a s**t sandwich comes with sprinkles, and people can enjoy any old muck if they have to. Which brings us to the topic of today's Best Games Ever Podcast: what's the best live service game you begrudgingly like? Could it be Destiny 2, the series that many hold responsible for this genre? Could it be Genshin Impact, the poster-child for F2P games that are Good Actually? Or could it be Diablo 4, which leverages a beloved ARPG brand to lure people into its miasma of micro (and macro) transactions? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lured Up Podcast 296 Record Date - 1/13/2023 Publish Date - 1/16/2023   Niantic did not have the best week with a slew of hiccups across different mechanics of the game. From Therian Tornadus not available as a Shiny to Bewear learning a charge move as a fast move, only to be followed up with the Dusk Form Lycanroc debacle, Trainer sentiment of Niantic is exceptionally low. While Twitter may be as toxic as ever, those with thick skin and a level head have plenty to be excited about.   We have new GO Tour: Sinnoh details, including the announcement of Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia, along with their Adventure Effects. These new charge move perks could revolutionize how we engage with the game, requiring increased attention to inventory management and Stardust. The result will be new ways to bring efficiency to our gameplay, drastically improving our in-game experience. While we have some time before its release, we are sure that Adventure Effects will be polarizing and exciting.   The announcement of Porygon Community Day Classic and Chansey Community Day means 3 major in-game events over a 29 day period. While some may say the game is asking a lot of their schedule, others say bring it on. The event overload leads to our topic of the week: monetization.   The Eggs-pedition Access may become the new normal, with a recurring $5 monthly ticket, in addition to any a la carte spending. We do feel that Niantic is giving Trainers plenty of options with their spending, allowing F2P players a great experience, while enhancing gameplay for those that are willing to invest. Finding the balance between passive spending and FOMO will prove to be a very interesting vibe to follow.   January Content Update - https://bit.ly/LU295January Bewear in GBL -https://bit.ly/LU296Bewear  Lustrous Odyssey - https://bit.ly/LU296Lustrous   Eggs-pedition Access -https://bit.ly/LU296Eggspedition  Rowlett Community Day - https://bit.ly/LU295Rowlet  Porygon Community Day Classic - https://bit.ly/LU296Porygon  Chansey Community Day - https://bit.ly/LU296Chansey  Hisuian Typhlosion Raid Day - https://bit.ly/LU296HisuianTyphlosion Raging Battles - https://bit.ly/LU296RagingBattles  GO Tour: Sinnoh Details - https://bit.ly/LU254GOTour  Adventure Effects - https://bit.ly/LU297AdventureEffects  Monetization -https://bit.ly/LU296Monetization  Fendi Avatar Items - https://bit.ly/LU296Fendi  Fendi Is Expensive - https://bit.ly/LU296FRGMT  Fendi Code - FENDIxFRGMTxPOKEMON LuredUp@PokemonProfessor.com     Voicemail and SMS: 732-835-8639    Use code FULLHEAL at https://tgacards.com/ for 10% off your order!   Support the show by bookmarking and shopping at TCGPlayer.com using this link - https://bit.ly/TCGPlayerAffiliate    https://linktr.ee/PokemonProfessorNetwork    Hosts Ken Pescatore Adam Tuttle   Writer and Producer Ken Pescatore   Executive Producer  Paul Bhatt   Show music provided by GameChops and licensed through Creative Commons   ▾ FOLLOW GAMECHOPS ▾ http://instagram.com/GameChops http://twitter.com/GameChops http://soundcloud.com/GameChops http://facebook.com/GameChops http://youtube.com/GameChops http://www.gamechops.com   Intro Music Lake Verity (Drum & Bass Remix)  Tetracase GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/ https://soundcloud.com/tetracase  https://soundcloud.com/MegaFlare0   Break Music National Park Mikel & GameChops GameChops - Poké & Chill http://smarturl.it/pokechill https://twitter.com/mikel_beats   Outro Music Vast Poni Canyon CG5 & GlitchxCity (Future Bass Remix) GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/  http://soundcloud.com/cg5-beats https://soundcloud.com/glitchxcity Pokémon And All Respective Names are Trademark and © of Nintendo 1996-2021 Pokémon GO is Trademark and © of Niantic, Inc. An increasingly hot topic amongst the TWiG crew, and the industry at large, is mobile, F2P veterans looking to additional platforms for blue or purple oceans. Between the maturity of the mobile market, the challenges of breaking through as a new game or IP, rising CPIs, diminished targeting capabilities or the limited power of platform-level featuring, it feels like every company with live-service expertise is asking themselves where else they can ply their trade. That's why Ethan invited Adam Smart - Director of Product at Appsflyer and host of "In the Sandbox with..." - onto the podcast. In this wide ranging conversation, they discuss the forces driving the push to console, PC and cross-platform development and how free-to-play developers can bring their mobile platform playbook to these platforms. Given Appsflyer's recent launch of their measurement suite for console and PC, things are getting a lot easier for traditionally mobile developers interested in using performance marketing to scale their games on these platforms. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/support
