There was a time in the "Boise State Era" when there were a great amount of players who happened to be 'NFL' talent on both sides of the ball. Chase Baker, was one of those players. Today on the show, we get to hear about his journey through the football world as he was able to play at Boise State as a Bronco during the era where it truly TOOK OFF! We discuss some of his favorite memories at Boise State, as well as how he even got recruited in High School (listen to this story that might intrigue you as he was battling an injury he had sustained late in his high school athletics career). We also chat about some of his favorite games he was a part of during that time. What intrigued me about Chase's story of his playing days though, was how his professional journey ended up. What was it like being part of the Vikings organization when he was there. How does the NFL do business? Did he feel like he could match physically with the guys who were there? All these questions we chat about in the interview. I also love hearing about his story of how he even got into coaching. Because he's had quite an interesting and unique coaching journey thus far in his career. From stints in high school, scouting, FCF (Fan Controlled Football League), and even coaching overseas for the Barcelona Dragons and now at the NFL Academy in London, he's really taking this coaching and development thing head on! We'll learn about his journey and learn more about the NFL Academy and what their intent and purpose is all about! Ray Austin is a former NFL player who was drafted by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 1997 Draft. After football, he went on to successful modeling and acting careers. Today he is the co-founder of Fan Controlled Sports, where he is the commissioner of the Fan Controlled Football League. He also is a co-founder of Athlyt, an NIL platform. Ray calls being drafted into the NFL, "a blessing and a curse." He uses this point to highlight for listeners that setting a goal is just the start of success; the ability to look beyond even one's biggest goal is what propels one to new heights. In this episode, Ray discusses his childhood journey as an "Army brat," and how his football career unfolded. He shares a hilarious recruiting story featuring one of the greatest college football coaches in history and highlights the major risk he took to land at his dream college. Playing alongside players like Peyton Manning, Ray explains how he approached the locker room and how it improved his game. Ray tells listeners the gumption-filled story of how he transitioned into modeling and acting after the NFL. He also imparts great advice for entrepreneurs. Using real-life stories from Fan Controlled Sports, he explains: Why founders should focus on what won't work with their business instead of what will to ensure its success; How to build trust with co-founders--even if they are people you barely know; Why having a strong team is critical to a founder's success; and How playing team sports is great preparation for entrepreneurship Get the Ruling Sports Newsletter: https://rulingsports.com/newsletter/ Follow Ruling Sports Instagram: www.Instagram.com/RulingSports Twitter: www.Twitter.com/RulingSports Facebook: www.Facebook.com/RulingSports LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/RulingSports TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@RulingSports
Chad Johnson was a NFL wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2001 to 2010 and played for the New England Patriots in 2011. You'll hear him referred to at times as Chad Ochocinco because from 2008-2012 he wanted to be called by that name in tribute to his jersey number, 85. Terrell Owens also played wide receiver in the NFL from 1996 to 2010 for 5 teams, starting with the San Francisco 49ers and ending with one year playing alongside Chad Johnson in Cincinnati. Wikipedia lists TO, as he is known, as currently playing for the Knights of Degen of the Fan Controlled Football League. Johnson and Owens were regarded during their playing days as “diva” wide receivers; supremely talented, self confident, cocky, some would say selfish, and flashy. Their profiles more closely resemble the stereotype of the financially irresponsible pro athlete who goes broke after his playing days than those of money management role models. As it turns out, Chad Johnson's story today seems to contradict the stereotype. According to the site Celebritynetworth.com, he made $49 million dollars during his playing career, and has a current net worth of $15.M. Unfortunately, Terrell Owens' story plays more into the stereotype about athletes and money, and serves mainly as an example of what not to do when it comes to managing your personal finances. Celebritynetworth.com states that Terrell Owens made $80 million in salaries and endorsements during his playing career, but currently has a net worth of only $500k. According to the site, by 2011, one year after his NFL career ended, Owens was completely broke, telling a judge that he had no monthly income and very expensive monthly obligations. What can we learn from both their positive examples and unfortunate mistakes? Resources Chad ‘Ochocinco' saved 83% of his NFL salary by buying fake jewelry and sleeping in the stadium — here are 5 simple ways to preserve your wealth at an all-star level Football star Terrell Owens said these are some of ‘the most idiotic' purchases we can make. Pros say avoiding those kinds of expense traps could save you big bucks. Contact the Host - vince@thecfoathome.com
With players from all XFL teams travelling to Arlington Texas to attend a combined training camp the excitement for the league is continuing to build. With the schedule now released, and the announcement that the Vegas Vipers will play in Cashman Field, the thought of the XFL kicking off on 18 February is drawing even closer to reality. In this podcast we hear about the football journey of Cecil Cherry, a linebacker who excelled in college, but had his NFL Pro day cancelled because of COVID. He took it upon himself to drive from Frostproof, Florida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to try out for the Fan Controlled Football League. Making a name for himself in the FCF, The Spring League, and the Hub football training camp, Cecil was invited to the NFL Alumni Academy, which led to an invitation to join the Vegas Vipers at the upcoming XFL training camp. Cecil talks about making the most of his opportunities, and what the XFL can expect from his presence in Arlington. This episode is called “Arlington Opportunity.” It features a young football player who is getting an opportunity to go further in the realm of professional football, and what he has to do to best take advantage of this opportunity. Second, Mark Nelson will speak to tight end Tommy Auger. Tommy will talk about his time playing in the Austrian Football League and with the Fan Controlled Football League. They will discuss how Auger has worked his way up in pro-football, leading to him being selected by the Orlando Guardians in the Specialist phase of the draft. With the confetti from Super Bowl LV having fallen in Tampa, a new professional football league awaits. This Saturday, the Fan Controlled Football League will launch its inaugural season on Twitch at 8 p.m. ET. At the helm of this new fan-first experience is commissioner Ray Austin, an alum of the Chicago Bears, New York Jets and the XFL. Beyond his career as a defensive back, Austin is known for his modeling and acting career, including roles on Empire and Chicago P.D. Austin, 46, brings a dynamic energy and passionate voice to the FCF, which allows fans to participate and vote for plays through a custom app. Through Twitch, the league will also offer unique camera perspectives, as well as various game hosts, including a feed of commissioner Austin. In our conversation . . . Austin talks about his leap from pro football player to actor: “The reason I got into acting [was] because Jim Brown, O.J. Simpson were like superstars to me . . . I was like, ‘Wow, so they played football and they ended up being on TV because of that?' I was like, I love it. That's what I'm going to do.” Austin explains the genesis for the idea that eventually led to him co-founding Fan Controlled Football: “I was literally at a semi-pro football game watching one of my buddies . . . where he had his phone with him. I was just like, ‘Man, what is your coach doing?! Man, tell your coach to run a sweep, tell him to run a play-action pass, man.' And I had to go talk to the team after the game. So I'm just saying, ‘You know what? Let me get your phone number, coach . . . and I just texted him, ‘Run a sweep, run Cover 2.'' And when it happened, I was just like, ‘Oh my goodness . . . I got something here!' ” Austin shares the story of embracing a potential competitor as his co-founder: “[Tony Paris] said, ‘Man, I love your idea, but I've got a guy that you might want to meet . . . he's working on the same thing.' And I was like, ‘Oh, snap!' Then I got nervous. Like, ‘Oh man, somebody's working on this? What's going on? OK. Who is this guy? What does he do?' You know? And he's like, ‘Man, why don't you just go meet him?' So I talked to him on the phone and flew up and met Sohrob Farudi, the CEO [of FCF].” Austin discusses what makes the FCF unique: “It's basically a live video game. We are trying to construct a live video game, allowing fans to literally control actual athletes. And, and I'm not just saying on the field as just calling plays, but we're talking about, you know, that sport escapism, everybody always wanted to, you know, call that play . . . so why don't you say or do something about it then?” You can follow Ray Austin on Twitter (@rayaustin36) and Instagram (@rayaustin36), as well as the FCF (@fcflio and @fcfl).
