The city of Perth in Western Australia is sometimes described as the most isolated city in the world. During the late 1950s, Perth's idyllic beaches, laidback lifestyle and small town atmosphere made it feel like a safe, protected place to live. But that sense of safety would be abruptly shattered by a man who would come to be known as The Night Caller. --- Narration – Anonymous Host Research & writing – Erin Munro Creative direction – Milly Raso Production and music – Mike Migas Music – Andrew D.B. Mark Bomback had never made anyone cry with previous films. He is best known for action-packed movies like The War of Planet of the Apes and Total Recall. But after reading the best-selling book The Art of Racing in the Rain by author Garth Stein, Bomback did two things: adopted his yellow lab Jagger and wrote a tear-jerking-screenplay. A golden retriever, Enzo (voice by Kevin Costner) believes that after dogs die, they are reincarnated as a human. This philosophy drives Enzo to learn everything he can from his racecar driving human played by Milo Ventimiglia. Enzo helps his family navigate moments of joy and great sorrow, paying close attention in the hopes that next time, he can be one of them. Join host James Jacobson for a moving and funny conversation with Mark Bomback about love, dogs, and Enzo's philosophy. About Mark Bomback In 1994 Mark Bomback got his first job: as an assistant for Eagles' guitarist Glenn Frey. He held that job for a year before going on to become a screenwriter. His first credited screenplay was The Night Caller (1998). He has since gone on to co-write the scripts for numerous blockbuster films, including Live Free or Die Hard (2007), The Wolverine (2013) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). He's also done uncredited rewrites on several other high-profile films, such as Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Logan (2017) and The Mummy (2017.) His most recent project is the crime drama miniseries Defending Jacob produced by Apple TV+, and the American war drama film White Bird: A Wonder Story (2022). THE RETAILATORS und NIGHT CALLER.

Eric Edgar Cooke was born into a life of violence and abuse. A childhood of being bullied by his father and classmates created a helplessness inside of him that he needed to rid himself of. Eric Edgar Cooke was known as the "Night Caller". He terrorised Perth, Western Australia in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, committing at least twenty-two violent crimes, and eight murders. Kermit Gosnell was a doctor with a secretive, illegal and horrendous practise, where he and his untrained staff carried out abortions in the most unhygenic conditions, resulting in the deaths of countless babies and at least one woman.
It’s Australia Day 1963, in the middle of a hot summer in Perth. A couple are sitting in a car, kissing and talking, in the beachside suburb of Cottesloe. They feel safe. It’s a safe neighbourhood in a safe city, and the night is still and empty. That is until the female notices, at around 2:40am, something outside the car window. It’s a man. Watching them. She alerts her male companion to the figure … who they realise is holding a rifle. They spring to action, trying to drive away as fast as they can. The man shoots at them, and she instinctively puts up her hand. She is injured, but the two escape alive. By the next morning, Perth wakes up to the news that five people have been shot, with three dead. It was a killing spree unlike anything Perth had ever seen. But that wouldn’t be the extent of Eric Edgar Cooke’s crimes. And while he killed innocent civilians, there were two men in prison, serving time for murders they had not committed. For 5 years, the Night Caller terrorised Perth residents. The victims were chosen randomly. No one was off limits. No one was safe. Leaving your house & car doors unlocked were no longer an option. The case becomes a mess when the police refuse to believe his confessions. What happens next? Tune in and find out! In 1959, Eric Cooke committed his first murder in the sleepy city of Perth, Australia. And, having gotten away with the crime, it seemed nothing would slow down his bloody rampage.
Born in 1931 to a caring mother and alcoholic father, Eric Edgar Cooke had a turbulent home life. His string of break-ins and petty thefts were met with sympathetic authorities who gave Cooke second and third chances… But their leniency was cast aside in favor of more violence.

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, during the 1950’s was described as being more like a big country town rather than a city. Neighbours knew each other, cars were left parked in the driveway and streets with the keys still in the ignition. Front doors were left unlocked, house windows were left wide open day and night. In January of 1959 in the peak of summer. Residents within the city and outlying suburbs slept with doors and windows open in attempt to cool their dwellings during the above average temperatures the city was experiencing at the time. It wasn’t unusual to find residents sleeping outdoors on balconies, porches and even on the ground in the front yard. People had a laid back approach to home security. Crime was low and it seemed that everyone trusted those around them. It wouldn’t be long before a string of violent and seemingly unrelated crimes would make them question this trust and turn a once quiet and peaceful city in to panicked frenzy.
