The title of today's podcast is not a mistake. We're talking about Mark Madness, not the NCAA basketball tournament. Two nights ago, I was up late watching an old Law & Order episode on Sundance TV. I don't usually pay attention to the commercials, but one of their promotional announcements caught my eye. It promoted Mark Madness, their marathon of Mark Harmon's long-running TV show, NCIS. I love the pun. All my years in media and marketing made me appreciate people who can creatively market something that many find boring. You can watch NCIS on numerous channels, but I'll remember this... What if uncovering a family story you never knew could change the way you see yourself and the world? I believe family history has the power to do just that.Back in 2019, Ancestry and SundanceTV premiered a documentary short at the Sundance Film Festival called Railroad Ties. This film explores the legacy of the Underground Railroad and its lasting impact on the descendants of both those who were enslaved and those who fought for their freedom. Before you listen to this episode, I encourage you to watch the film. You can find it here: Watch Railroad Ties on YouTubeAfter watching, join me for an insightful interview with Gayle George. She shares how discovering this story not only connected her with ancestors she never knew but also inspired her to preserve and honor their legacies. From emotional revelations in old court records to the powerful act of marking unremembered graves, Gayle's journey illustrates how knowing our roots can deepen our sense of identity and belonging.Discover more about Gayle's work and the legacy of her ancestors at WeemsThePeople.org and Awakeningho.me._______________________________________________Please rate and review this podcast and then share it with your family and friends. For ideas on how to connect more deeply with your family through family stories, follow Crista on Instagram @CristaCowan.

Originally from Douglassville, PA, Jim studied film at NYU and then worked his way up in the industry, eventually deciding to make his own film in 2006, Mulberry Street, with frequent collaborator Nick Damici. If you're listening to this podcast, the question of what's next is probably on your mind. Here's a helpful way to think about it. Some see life as a three-act play. Act One is birth through your twenties, Act Two is your 30s until age 60, which is often your most productive period professionally and for many raising a family. And then, there's a Third Act, which for many people presents a new blank canvas to explore new or long-deferred pursuits and make a difference in the lives of others. Josh Sapan is the author of The Third Act: Reinventing Your Next Chapter. The book profiles 63 people who are pursuing meaningful third acts. Some are names you'll know like Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Norman Lear. But most are people like you and I, and they are living inspiring stories that illustrate the wide range of opportunities for people to thrive and contribute in their third acts. Josh Sapan joins us from New York. (Three of the people profiled have visited with us on the podcast and you can find the links below). ___________________________ Bio Josh Sapan is the recently retired President and CEO of AMC Networks. During his 36-year leadership of the company, with 26 as CEO, he's been credited for creating some of the most celebrated and groundbreaking original content in television history, including Mad Men; Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul; and The Walking Dead, and with building a portfolio of brands that includes AMC, BBC AMERICA IFC, SundanceTV, WE tv, IFC Films among others. ________________________ For More on Josh Sapan The Third Act: Reinventing Your Next Chapter ________________________ Ready to Design Your New Life in Retirement? It also has many people who no one has never heard of. And there is, I think, something thematically consistent between those who are luminaries and those who are not, and I think that it is a few, a couple different things. One is curiosity. And I think a second thing is the ability somehow to actualize what is often resident in many people, which is a desire or a fantasy to do something. It can be socially impactful or it just can be a fantasy, but they all somehow have the capability to implement that which is in their heads and making it real in the world." On Mentoring "...it was a bit of an experiment. And I just immediately warmed to it because I just thought that it would be a nice thing to do. And also a friend introduced me to an organization in New York called The Fortune Society, which is a remarkable organization that does more than mentoring. It provides a whole range of services to people who've been incarcerated, and it helps them adjust in multiple ways. There's a residential facility and there's instruction. And so I've been also going out to the facility in Queens and doing - I hesitate to call it mentoring, it's my attempt at mentoring. But the truth is I hope it's good for them. It's definitely good for me. And I really don't know if I'm helping them enough or perfectly. I am trying. It is spectacular to be around people whose day-to-day is entirely different than mine and whose frame of reference is different. Either a student or someone who's been in prison for 26 years - and I'm listening to what their challenges are in life, work, the world, and how they see the world. And I don't want to get coy and say it's really inspiring, but it is. And you mentioned something earlier when we were speaking about doing doing the exercises, and it does seem to me, at least for me,

On this episode the Founder of Cathartic Realism Films Claire Chubbuck stops by to share her amazing story of how to turn Tragedy into Purpose. Claire shares some of the unique projects she's working on and her views on the Metaverse. Don't miss this special episode. Who is Claire Chubbuck? Claire Chubbuck is an emerging female director that creates mission driven content that creates catharsis for those working on it - she calls it “Cathartic Realism”. Cathartic Realism is a genre where artists tell the story of their personal traumas to find healing through catharsis. A take on the “true story” trope, this genre allows artists to depict their truths - the way it felt to them, but with an ending where you win for the purpose of cathartic release. The only way we can let it go is to feel it. She works with actors to use the traumatic events in their lives to make art. Born in Los Angeles, California, Claire Chubbuck is the daughter of internationally celebrated acting coach, Ivana Chubbuck, and award-winning director/producer, the late Lyndon Chubbuck. After going to Scripps College in 2007 for Economics, she graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with honors (recipient of the Founders Award) and a BFA in Filmmaking in 2012. Straight out of the gate she worked at AMC Networks as a Programming and Scheduling executive. While working there, Claire began creating short form content for SundanceTV's International channels that was broadcast worldwide. In 2013, Claire worked as a producer on “Pussy Riot: The Movement”, the first comprehensive film that tells the full story - from arrest through release from prison and beyond - of the remarkable women who defied a strongman, survived Russian prisons and rallied the world behind them. The documentary also examines the perversion of the Russian Constitution by ex-KGB officer and President Vladimir Putin. In 2014, Claire moved to Participant Media, whose films include Good Night, and Good Luck, Syriana, An Inconvenient Truth, Food, Inc., Waiting for ‘Superman', The Help, Contagion and Lincoln. There she worked to launch a linear television network, Pivot. In 2015, Claire found her fiancé dead of tragic circumstances and, in one second, everything changed. Since then, she has been trying to help other people find an explanation for their traumas - enough to move forward without shame - with a unique community of artists that want to create. She found this community when she began teaching at Ivana Chubbuck Studios. As a teacher, she has found great pleasure in being part of inspiring others, many to great success. After spending time teaching, Claire reemerged with a new directorial debut in 2019 with ‘how I lost my virginity', a short film detailing her best friend's real-life experience of kidnapping and rape - intended to provide catharsis while looking at the systematic problem that allow for the victims of sexual assault to far outweigh the perpetrators. In 2020, “how I lost my virginity” won over 17 awards and was shown at several high-profile film festivals including Beverly Hills Film Festival, Chain Film Festival, Santa Monica International Film Festival, SF Indie Fest, Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival, Marina del Rey Film Festival, among others. Claire personally won “Best Direction” at the Best Shorts Competition in addition “Best First Time Director” at Canadian Cinematography Awards, New York Cinematography Awards (NYCA), and Top Shorts Awards. The first theatrical showing of the short was at Marina del Rey Film Festival, where the short won the Audience Award for “Best Short”. During the quarantine of 2021, Claire made an experimental film called (Corona) Viral Monologues, which had it's theatrical premiere at the Chinese Theater as part of the Silicon Beach Film Festival, where we were awarded the Audience Award for Best Narrative Short. This hour long special won “Best Artistic Film” at the Atlanta Award-Qualifying Film Festival 2022, “Best Narrative” at the Washington Film Festival, was a semi-finalist for “Best Ensemble” and “Best Experimental Film” at the Los Angeles Film Awards, and was an official selection for the Global Indie Film Awards. Claire also won Vegas Movie Award's Prestige Award for “Best Female Filmmaker” for this film. Claire currently has 2 short films in post-production, 2 short films in pre-production, and a feature film in development. Father James Martin and director Shannon Post talk about their documentary “Building a Bridge” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks. The documentary named after the book by Father Martin “Building a Bridge” follows a priest on his mission to make the Catholic Church more accepting of our LGBTQ community despite loud opposition from both inside and outside the Church. The film tells the stories of people whose lives intersect in emotional and complicated ways with Father Martin's journey as a voice for acceptance within the Church and the conflict between conservative and liberal Catholics over LGBTQ issues including Pope Francis. One of the highlights of the film is when Father Martin talks about how horrified he was by Catholic leaders' silence in the wake of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre. He addresses this issue with a grieving Pulse mother Christine Leinonen whose son Dru was killed in the massacre. The film also follows Father Martin and the lives he has impacted including a family with three LGBTQ siblings and a college student trying to reconcile his gay and Catholic identities. Shannon co-directed and produced the film with Evan Mascagni a Catholic who was disenchanted by the Church but inspired by Father Martin's message of building a bridge between the Church and our LGBTQ community that also resonated with Shannon as a queer person. The film came to the attention of Martin Scorsese who served as Executive Producer of “Building a Bridge” which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. We talked to Father James and Shannon about what they hope to accomplish with this film and their spin on our LGBTQ issues. Father James Martin is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America magazine, consultor to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication and the author of many books including the New York Times bestsellers “Jesus: A Pilgrimage”, “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything” and “Learning to Pray”. A graduate of the Wharton School of Business Father Martin worked in corporate America before entering the Jesuits. Currently he recently launched Outreach a new website designed to help LGBTQ Catholics, their families and friends with respect, compassion and sensitivity.
