This week: the death of British industry In the cover piece for the magazine, Matthew Lynn argues that Britain is in danger of entering a ‘zero-industrial society'. The country that gave the world the Industrial Revolution has presided over a steep decline in British manufacturing. He argues there are serious consequences: foreign ownership, poorer societies, a lack of innovation, and even national security concerns. Why has this happened? Who is to blame? And could Labour turn it around? Matthew joined the podcast, alongside the head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Paul Nowak. (1:05) Next: the Pope takes on President Trump The Pope has nominated Cardinal Robert McElroy to be the new Archbishop of Washington. Damian Thompson writes that on the face of it, this might sound like a routine appointment, but the reality is that this is retaliation against the Trump administration. for the nomination of an arch-MAGA loyalist, and uncompromising Catholic, as the new ambassador to the Holy See. Subsequently, the Vatican has appointed an outspoken liberal. What does this tell us about the power of both the Papacy and the President? And how much sway does the Catholic hierarchy really have in Trump's America? Damian joined us to reveal more, alongside our deputy editor Freddy Gray, who has been in D.C. for Trump's inauguration. (19:02) And finally: what are sex parties really like? Far from being a sexy affair, sex parties are depressing, with most attendees leaving unfulfilled and rather disappointed, writes James Innes-Smith. He says that he spent more time in the kitchen at a recent party than in the bedroom. So, what makes them appealing in the first place? Are people looking for connection in all the wrong places? James joined the podcast alongside Sophia Money-Coutts, who has written about the subject for Tatler magazine. (30:35) Hosted by Lara Prendergast and William Moore. All you ever wanted to know (and probably a few bits that you didn’t) about egg freezing. What does it involve? What are the success rates? Will the hormones make me moody? And is it really true that a woman’s ovaries swell to the size of melons?Writer and host Sophia Money-Coutts is 35, single and having her eggs frozen. In this podcast, she shares her audio diaries of the whole process, from choosing a fertility clinic to the operation itself, along with the ups (and downs) of undergoing an emotional and hormonal procedure. She also investigates the science behind egg freezing, its rapid growth in popularity, and speaks to fertility experts and women who’ve gone through freezing about their experience of the procedure. Plus, she has the odd chat with her mum.Launching soon.Freezing Time is written and produced by Hannah Varrall and Sophia Money-Coutts, and created by OffScript. So, you know when you’re *supposed* to be interviewing someone professionally and you end up just chatting away like mates? Such was my experience of interviewing this week’s guest, Sophia Money-Coutts – the former features director at Tatler and now a thrice-published author – resulting in a laughter-filled episode which covers everything from egg freezing; solo travel; Zoom fatigue; and what happens when you become newly-single in your 30s. P.s. Sophia also shared the best (or indeed worst) songs on her break-up soundtrack, including Tracy Chapman’s ‘The Promise’ and Passenger’s ‘Golden Leaves’. Broken hearts, steer clear.  Sophia’s latest novel, The Wish List, is out now, available from Amazon and Waterstones.  Twitter: @ChezSpecter @sophiamcouttsInstagram: @alonementofficial @sophiamcoutts

Sophia Money-Coutts is a journalist and author who writes for 'The Sunday Telegraph' and the 'Evening Standard'. Her 3rd novel is 'The Wish List', about Florence who writes down her ideal man, and is then shocked when he wanders into her bookshop. You can hear how she got the idea at an...adult party, and how her family then influenced how she wrote the story. We talk about genre, about the conventions of rom-com and whether she's bothered about sticking to them, and when ideas tend to pop into her head. Sophia, like me, is a morning person. We chat about why that is, and if the labelling is useful at all, or pointlessly self-fulfilling.'The Wish List' comes out on August 6th. On today’s episode, I’m chatting with an award-winning journalist and author, who just so happens to be Tatler magazine’s ex features director. Growing up, this week’s guest knew she would forge a career in journalism but how, was the million dollar question. Graduating with a degree from London School of Economics, she realised with a jolt of reality that entering the world of storytelling wasn’t going to be as straightforward as stepping on to a well paid graduate scheme in one of the city’s corporations, as many of her friends were setting out to do. A stroke of luck and a tenacious attitude rewarded her with an opportunity to assist on the features desk at the Evening Standard and well, the rest is history! Taking her across the sea to the sandy deserts of Abu Dhabi and plunging her into the notorious world of Labradors, castles and dukes - her life is quite the compelling story in itself. Currently working on her fourth book in lockdown we spoke about making it in media, dealing with online trolls and what it’s really like to release a novel. Without further ado, here’s what it’s like to be Sophia Money-Coutts. Visit Sophia's website for more information on her writing and career and follow her on social media for updates. Pre-order her fourth book out in August now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wish-List-Sophia-Money-Coutts/dp/0008370567

Writer and author Sophia Money Coutts doesn't remember seeing any make-up during her young life because ’the posh old school thing is that women aren’t supposed to wear a lot of make-up - or if they do they’re certainly not supposed to look like they’re wearing a lot of make-up.'Aged 11, vitiligo started to leach pigment from her skin, and when Sophia eventually started to use make-up, some of her efforts were directed at the white patches. In today's episode, we talk about how make-up has never been a big feature despite it inching its way into her life, Sophia's fascination with silky hair, and how a bath is her preferred way to end a day.We also discuss botox, break ups, navigating uni life, being judged for having a 'posh' name, and how Sophia went about crafting characters for her two books, The Plus One, and What Happens Now? (The latter of which I read in a satisfying gulp over the summer and very much enjoyed so would encourage you to buy.)Beauty Full Lives is hosted by Madeleine Spencer, produced by Charlie Jones, and with artwork by Sung Lee. Warning: there is a LOT of laughter in this episode. Sophia Money-Coutts is a journalist, columnist and the author of two hilarious novels, The Plus One and What Happens Now. I love Sophia's writing – she is so, so funny but also so clever and observant, with a brilliant knack for taking a sideways look at everyday scenarios and making you think twice about them – whether that's a date, a party or even what kind of mug you drink tea from. Join as we talk about “spurgling” (that's sperm burgling fyi), ghosting, how it feels to have your parents read your sex scenes, her time working for Tatler and why we're so obsessed with class.
