House, groove, and Samoan-Māori soulstress La Coco has today shared her shining new EP INTO THE LIGHT - alongside a brand new single ‘Follow Me (The Remake)'! Fresh off the Powerstation stage performing alongside Nathan Haines earlier this month, the Tāmaki Makaurau-based star is sharing her warm and radiant new collection of songs. Oozing deep pockets of house groove, dreamy vocals, and a fusion of old-school RnB, soul and gospel inspired by the Detroit sound - La Coco is taking Aotearoa electronic music to the next level with her new EP INTO THE LIGHT.  “The house influences bring a sense of movement and rhythm, while the gospel-RnB vocals offer depth and emotion,” says La Coco. “INTO THE LIGHT is energetic and spiritual, capturing moments of connection, reflection, and celebration - making the EP feel like an intimate journey of faith, love, and unity.” Already, La Coco (Latoia Sasa-Tepania) has made some serious waves across Aotearoa - she's released three EPs, received the 2020 Waiata Māori music award Best RnB Album for OUT OF TIME, and she's had several Pacific Music Award nominations. Not to mention her notorious collaborations with the aforementioned Polynesian Hip Hop legend POETIK, as well as Atjazz, and more.  Made with the support of NZ on Air, today's EP continues La Coco's impressive run of collaborations - with the artist working alongside DJs, producers and arrangers Gene Rivers and Matt Thorburn to bring the project to life. Welcome to part one of our two part series on Technology, Church and Culture. On today's episode Heather finally has a conversation she has been wanting to have since season 1, and that is on the topic of pornography. According to the Youth Pornography Addiction Center, 93 % of boys and 62% of girls are exposed to internet pornography before the age of 18. To discuss porns impact and what resources may be available to help a user who wants to quit, Heather sits down with John Michael Bout and Jacob Valk who created the documentary Into the Light, which helps people navigate and break free porn addiction. Heather also sits down with investigative reporter on technology and culture, Taylor Lorenz to discuss the 12-page bill, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, aimed to "protect the national security of the United States from the threat posed by foreign adversary controlled applications" like TikTok. Taylor walks us through what we need to know about the Tik Tok ban and adds another tool to our social toolkit, You can order her latest book, Extremely Online here. Guest Bio Jacob Valk holds a degree in Advertising from Mohawk College and a B.A. in Humanities from Brock University. He worked various roles in advertising/film in Toronto, co-produced the documentaries Ordinary Commission and Into The Light, and runs the podcast Chats Under The Sun. He is finishing an M.Div. at SBTS in Louisville, Kentucky, where he lives and works at the ReCenter homeless shelter.  John-Michael Bout holds a B.A. in Classics from Brock University and is working on an M.Div. at SBTS in Louisville, Kentucky. They'll go into what it's about and the heart behind it this documentary to help men and women find freedom from porn. What is Into the Light?Into the Light is a teaching documentary on freedom from pornography. It walks through the process of change: from bondage in sexual sin all the way to freedom in Christ. It is a resource for strugglers and the local church. It can be watched in a whole session or broken up into “Chapters” or Episodes. It is for men and women. There is a disservice being done to women in regards to porn addictions. It can often be referred to as a “man's issue” which when brought up in public or during a sermon allows women to think: “you're kind of a freak to struggle with a man's problem” or “you're not worth being included in the conversation.” The gospel that saves men from sin is the same gospel that saves women from sin. Men and women struggle and the steps to freedom are the same. What are the Steps to Freedom?The documentary refers to some conceptual steps that need to take place. Each episode goes through one of these concepts and takes you on the journey to healing and freedom.  Know your enemy and what you're dealing with. Talk about sin.  What did God design marriage/sexuality for? Talk about the good and know the good to have that foundation to go the rest of the way. Why do you crave this? What is the posture of your heart? What strategies/practical ways you can follow through with what your heart needs? How do you keep the momentum up?  The church together needs to fight pornography.  The first step for someone if you are struggling is to confess to God. Only after that should you find the godliest person you know and confess/open up to them so they can help you chart a course going forward. We don't need to be cleaned up before we go to God. Episode 410."Eye In The Sky" Movie Composer: Paul Hepker.Paul Hepker is a talented composer whose "Eye In The Sky" remains one of my most favorite movie scores. It is also Alan Rickman's last movie. His other credits include Rendition, Tsotsi and so many more.Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Paul Hepker trained as a concert pianist under Adolphe Hallis. He worked as a Musical Director at the National Theatres in Pretoria and Cape Town (The Rocky Horror Show, Joseph) and has performed or recorded with a number of prominent South African and international artists such as Shirley Bassey, Miriam Makeba, Ice Cube and Vusi Mahlasela. He wrote the voter education theme “Make Your Mark” for the first democratic elections in South Africa, which gave birth to a National TV gameshow of the same name. In the mid-1990's he toured the world as a member of Grammy-nominated band Johnny Clegg and Savuka (Juluka) before moving to Los Angeles in 1997 to pursue a career in composing for stage and screen.A long-time member of acclaimed Los Angeles theatre company Circle X, Hepker garnered an Ovation Award, two LA Weekly Awards, and numerous nominations for his work as composer or Musical Director on productions such as Grendel, Laura Comstock's Bag-Punching Dog, and Romeo & Juliet: Antebellum, New Orleans, 1839.In 1999 Hepker was a Finalist in the inaugural John Lennon Songwriting Competition and has had songs featured in, and included on the soundtracks for Eye In The Sky, Tsotsi, Permanent Midnight, Soul Survivor, The Bird Can't Fly and Into The Light.Paul's latest project is Official Secrets (Starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Smith) – his fourth collaboration with director Gavin Hood. “INTO THE LIGHT, I COMMAND THEE!“Continuing our spooky movie themed month, we decided to cover a movie about the world's grumpiest exorcist, Constantine! Although the Vertigo Comics character comes from the Hellblazer series, is blonde and British, certain liberties were taken in the American film adaptation starring Keanu Reeves as the titular character. Though the changes upset some fans (especially the comic series' creator Alan Moore as he infamously refused to accept any royalties from the film) the film still resonated with an audience. The film wasn't beloved by the critics, and to be honest, we at Retro Grade Podcast weren't enamored by the film when we first saw it. However, as news broke of an upcoming sequel with director Francis Lawrence and Keanu Reeves returning, maybe it's time to revisit the film and see how we feel about it now?Throughout our discussion, we talk about all of the things that make the movie so memorable. It sets up a unique paranormal noir world, rooted in Catholic concepts of sin, Heaven and Hell. The amazing cast AND performances from Rachel Weisz, Djimon Hounsou, Shia LeBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare, playing both complex and archetypal characters in a thoroughly entertaining way. We even dig into the “lost” character of Ellie, played by Michelle Monaghan, and why she only appears in one shot of the final film.We get clinical about what are problems are with the movie, it's pace, its plot devices, and the burden of taking the audience to a magical world while showing/telling us the rules in which this world operates. Are these issues enough for us to say Constantine is a bad movie? Not at all. By diving in deep on the story and themes, and how the two main characters paths intersect, the movie is a lot deeper than critics said it was back in 2005.
