The year is 1979 and the Elkton Pigeon Bay Port Lakers have already rolled through the local district and regional, but now face off with the state's number one team: Redford St Mary in the State Quarterfinals. In a packed gymnasium at Troy Athens High School, Tom Meyer was on hand to call the game that saw the Lakers trailing by multiple possessions with only a minute to go. Aaron Deering would make a hook shot as time expired to put the Lakers ahead by just one point, 56-55. A special thank you goes out to Dwight Gascho, who was at home that evening and for unknown reasons had the intuition to press record on a cassette tape for the final 90 seconds of the ball game. Lakers would go on to defeat Lansing Catholic Central 67-60 at Crisler Arena in the State Semi-Final game, before falling in the state championship to Three Oaks River Valley, 59-54.

Jrue Holiday had 27 points. Brook Lopez made his first start for Milwaukee since the season opener. In a one-and-done tournament, that’s not going to work. Hunter Dickinson had an idea. The sophomore center suggested a fixed scrimmage against the team’s student managers as part of the morning walkthrough prior to beating third-seeded Tennessee in the second round. Likely without a pick-up game to warm up, the 11th-seeded Wolverines will face second-seeded Villanova in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night in San Antonio. Despite an easing of pandemic restrictions, Major League Baseball and the players’ association reached a tentative agreement to keep the controversial rule starting each team with a runner on second base during extra innings for the 2022. The deal is subject to approval by baseball owners, which likely will take place next week, a person familiar with the agreement said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized. NFL – Lions re-sign backup quarterbacks Tim Boyle and David Blough The Detroit Lions have re-signed reserve quarterbacks Tim Boyle and David Blough, retaining the players who backed up Jared Goff last season. Boyle was 0-3 as a starter last season and was a backup in two games, throwing for three touchdowns and six interceptions. He played in 11 games as Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Blough played in only one game as a reserve for a second straight season. He was 0-5 as a rookie in 2019 with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Tennis – Ash Barty retires from tennis at age 25; won 3 Grand Slams Top-ranked Ash Barty has announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 25. Barty revealed the news in an emotional video posted on social media. The announcement comes less than two months after Barty won her home Australian Open to claim her third Grand Slam singles title. Barty left tennis to pursue a professional cricket career in 2014 but returned to the racket sport two years later. She won her major singles titles on three different surfaces — the French Open on clay in 2019, Wimbledon on grass last year and the Australian Open on hard courts in January. Russia/Ukraine – After Russia’s ban, world figure skating medals up for grabs The top two women from the Beijing Olympics, Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova, won’t be at the world figure skating championships this week in Montpellier, France. Neither will Kamila Valieva, the fourth-place finisher whose positive doping result casted a shadow over the entire Winter Games. That’s because all Russian skaters have been banned from competing by the International Skating Union, which followed the precedent set by other sports governing bodies following the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Figure skaters from Belarus also are barred from competition because of its alliance with Russia. The competition begins Wednesday. Steve Taylor grew up the son of a Baptist preacher in Spur, Texas. He went on to play college football at San Angelo State University. After a couple of years as a graduate assistant, Coach Taylor decided it was time to go for the "big money" in the Texas Public School System! Coach Taylor headed for Muleshoe and joined Mike Wartes and Alan Cornelius to make up a trio of a head coach, an offensive coordinator, and a defensive coordinator, that is their ages had been added together, didn't even equal 75 years of age. From Muleshoe, that same trio headed on to Denver City, where Cornelius would take the head job after Wartes departed, and then finally Coach Steve Taylor would take his first head coaching position, as he was promoted to lead the Mustangs. Coach Taylor spent 6 years at the helm, before taking a job in "the biggest little town in the world", Ozona, Texas. Coach Taylor and his staff took the reigns and immediately put the Lions on track for a great season. After 5 years of leading the Lions, Coach Taylor would take a job at Midland Greenwood, where he and his staff would lead the Rangers to the State Quarterfinals in 2006. After 5 years in Midland, Coach Taylor decided to head further west and took the job as the Head Football Coach of the Brownfield Cubs. A year later, he was headed home to Denver City for another great run with the Mustangs. Tune in for all the great details. You won't want to miss a great story about Coach Rip Sewell, a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, Hall of Honor. Not to mention, discuss one of the most incredible ladies I've met in my life, Anne Shaw.
