Susan has been connected to The Rose since the mid-1980s, when her boss at Texas Commerce Bank handed her a stack of newspaper articles and asked her to learn everything she could about a surgeon named Dr. Dixie Melillo. That assignment turned into a decades-long relationship with The Rose, years of emceeing fundraising style shows, and an unbroken commitment to the mission that continues today. She launched the Louise McBee Circle of Life Circle of Wreaths, an annual wreath auction run entirely by Art Park Players volunteers in honor of her mother. Her message throughout the years is simple, yet profound: everyone carries a light, and even the smallest flame can be the brightest thing in someone's darkest moment. Get involved with The Art Park Players here. Support The Rose HERE. Subscribe to Let’s Talk About Your Breasts on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, and wherever you get your podcasts. Key Questions Answered 1. How did Susan's relationship with The Rose begin, and what role did Dr. Dixie Melillo play in building it? 2. What did The Rose's full continuum of care look like for Susan's mother after a breast cancer diagnosis in 1993? 3. How does The Rose support patients beyond surgery, including wigs, prosthetics, and emotional follow-through? 4. What is the Louise McBee Circle of Life Circle of Wreaths and why did Susan start it? 5. How have Art Park Players volunteers sustained a community fundraiser for The Rose since 2001? 6. What is Art Park Players, and how does it serve children, families, and volunteers across the Houston area? 7. How does community word-of-mouth and sustained volunteer loyalty fuel The Rose's mission year after year? 8. Why does Susan send both insured and uninsured women to The Rose, and why does that distinction matter for the organization's funding? 9. How does a small annual fundraiser like a wreath auction contribute meaningfully to The Rose's operating budget? 10. What advice does Susan offer to people who feel their contribution is too small to matter? 11. How does Susan connect her work at Art Park Players with the same values of service, dignity, and community that drive The Rose? Timestamped Overview 00:00 Dorothy introduces Susan Mele: 45 years with Art Park Players, decades of Rose support, her mother's breast cancer journey with Dr. Melillo, and the annual wreath fundraiser named in her mother's honor. 00:52 Dorothy delivers the episode CTA: share this episode and donate at therose.org. 01:38 Dorothy asks Susan to start with herself. Susan describes a lifelong passion for performing, being adopted at 16 days old, and parents who nurtured her drive while grounding her in service and faith. 02:50 Dorothy asks how Susan first learned about The Rose. 02:55 Susan describes working for Tom Watson at Texas Commerce Bank in the mid-1980s. He had her clip every newspaper article she could find about Dr. Dixie Melillo, which led to Dixie joining the bank's board of directors and Susan meeting both Dorothy and Dixie. 03:29 Dorothy notes this connection goes back to 1986 or 1987. 03:47 Susan reflects on what drew her in: the compassion she saw in Dorothy and Dixie, and the contrast between how cancer was perceived in the 1980s and what The Rose was actually doing for women. 05:01 Dorothy recalls The Rose's earliest survivor volunteers and the environment Dixie created, including the time they could not say the word "breast" on television or radio. 05:44 Dorothy asks if breast cancer has touched Susan personally. 05:47 Susan describes her mother's 1993 breast cancer diagnosis. She brought her immediately to Dr. Melillo and The Rose. 06:20 Susan describes her mother's treatment: mastectomy on one side, lumpectomy on the other. Her mother declined reconstructive surgery and was afraid of hair loss. 06:55 Susan describes The Rose's follow-through after surgery: a referral to a wig specialist, fittings for prosthetic breasts and special bras, and ongoing mental and emotional support. Her mother survived. 08:02 Dorothy asks whether that experience deepened Susan's involvement with The Rose. 09:09 Susan describes how the Style Shows worked: store fittings, themed productions, silent auctions, and a community turnout that she believes turned many attendees into lifelong Rose supporters. 10:08 Dorothy asks Susan to recall a favorite Style Show moment. Both remember the 1960s hippie theme as particularly memorable. 11:56 Susan reflects on how events like the Style Show built lasting community investment in The Rose. 12:31 Dorothy asks Susan to talk about Art Park Players. 14:38 Susan describes joining in 1980 as a volunteer vocal coach, working for seven years without pay, then moving to part-time work at $6.50 an hour. She recognized her true calling was not performing but watching children find their voices and confidence. 15:01 Susan describes Art Park Players today: 250 students per semester, the largest children's theater in the city, the largest volunteer base in Deer Park, a Carnival Cruise performance group, a competition troupe through Theater Network of Texas, and scholarship and internship programs. 17:23 Susan describes fundraising within the theater: raising money for student travel, competitions, scholarships, and a private donor who quietly funds costumes and tuition for children whose families cannot afford them. 18:32 Susan reflects on being asked by Sue Finley Myers to carry on the mission when she retired. 18:55 Dorothy asks if students must be Deer Park residents. Susan says no, and describes students traveling from Humble, Cypress, Clear Lake, the Woodlands, and Friendswood. 20:19 Susan confirms Art Park Players is still a dinner theater and the only full year-round dinner theater in the Houston area. She shares that food brings in the husbands. 20:45 Dorothy asks Susan to describe the annual Rose fundraiser. 20:52 Susan describes the origin of the wreath auction: in 2001, volunteers wanted to do something meaningful and creative for The Rose. Inspired by a Circle of Trees event she had helped organize, she proposed handmade wreaths, a never-ending circle with symbolic meaning. 22:52 Susan explains the format: a fall wreath auction for show audiences and a Christmas wreath auction for theater families. Anyone can donate a wreath, and the offerings have grown to include wooden signs, stands, and centerpieces. 24:11 Dorothy confirms the event happens in fall and at Christmas. 24:20 Susan describes a piece made by a longtime volunteer woodworker that now sits in The Rose's lobby, bearing her mother's name. She says friends who come to The Rose for mammograms send her photos of it. 26:36 Susan says the Louise McBee Circle of Life Circle of Wreaths will continue as long as she is alive, regardless of the dollar amount raised. 26:53 Dorothy notes the fundraiser has now run for over 24 years. 27:07 Susan points out that Art Park Players was involved with The Rose even before 2001, through the Style Show partnership in the 1990s, totaling well over three decades of support. 27:33 Dorothy asks Susan's favorite Art Park production. 29:43 Dorothy closes the interview and reflects on the richness of Susan's story. 30:50 Susan shares her final message: everyone is valuable, everyone is worthy, and everyone carries a light. No matter how small the flame, it can be the brightest thing in someone's darkest moment, and that light is hope.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

December 23, 2023. Two days before Christmas. Connor Hilton, 17, invited friends to his Friendswood, Texas home to see his new gun. When Ethan Riley and Ben Bliek arrived, Connor stood up, raised the revolver, and shot both boys in the head. Ethan died on Christmas Eve. Ben survived but was left paralysed. A third teenager locked himself in the bathroom and called 911. Connor told police three different stories: first, self-defence—Ethan attacked him. Then, an accident—the gun just went off. Finally, the truth: "I've had suicidal, homicidal thoughts for so long. I've been planning it." His defence blamed Accutane, the acne medication, claiming it caused drug-induced psychosis. Prosecutors called him evil and pointed to his confession: he'd invited a whole group of friends over—whoever showed up would be his victims. In August 2025, a judge ruled the Accutane defence inadmissible. Connor pleaded guilty and received 50 years. In February 2026, a civil jury found his mother 75% responsible for failing to secure the weapon, awarding the victims' families $60 million. Connor will be eligible for parole in 2050, aged 42.Become a Patreon or Apple + subscriber now for ealry and ad free access from as little as $1.69 a week. Ep. 579: Non-Profits and Cities, AI and Job Displacement, Debunking the Overhead Myth

MinistryWatch Podcast

Christina Hello, everyone, I'm Christina Darnell, the managing editor of MinistryWatch. Welcome to the MinistryWatch podcast. In today's extra episode, I talk with Warren Smith about some news items that are slightly (even significantly) outside of our normal charity and philanthropy “beat.” So, Warren, what's up first? Warren Do non-profits contribute to the decline of cities? Aaron Renn, whose ideas I usually find nourishing, asked that question and came up with what I think is the wrong answer. Christina He said they did. Warren That's right, but I think this is one of the rare times his analysis is flawed. He has an analysis of leadership development in Indianapolis and has (tentatively) concluded that the rise of non-profits could be contributing to the decline of American cities. I recommend his analysis to you, even though I find it flawed in a number of ways. He is right to note that the number of non-profits has grown dramatically in the past few decades. Christina There are about 2 million non-profits in the country today, a huge increase in just the past decade. Warren That's right. And it's also true that many cities have non-profit leadership and “economic development” programs. But the analysis fails to note that most American cities have seen a remarkable revitalization over that period. The real crisis in America today is not the decline of cities, but the decline of small towns and the hollowing out of rural America as young people move into the cities that Renn says are in decline. Non-profits are not the problem. Renn, a clear thinker, has nonetheless in this case confused correlation with causation. One of the reasons for the growth of non-profits is their effectiveness in providing solutions to the problems Renn rightly identifies. Christina We've got links to Renn's study and other resources that might help with this issue in today's show notes. Warren, you took a look at artificial intelligence this week. What did you learn? Warren  A new study by Tufts University has identified which cities will be most affected by the growth of artificial intelligence. Not surprisingly, San Jose, Calif., home of Silicon Valley, will see the greatest impact. Washington, D.C., comes in at Number 2. Christina You can see the complete study in the show notes. But what does this have to do with ministries, and stewardship? Warren Fundraising executives and program managers – which includes a lot of non-profit jobs — are among the jobs to be most affected by the growth of AI. And, by the way, the job expected to be impacted the most, Christina, is journalism. So buckle up! Christina The Washington Post had a provocative article about growth in the Catholic Church, but you found the article to be wanting. Warren I did. The Washington Post headline proclaimed it knew “Why Catholicism is drawing in Gen Z men.” The answer: “Young men in their 20s and 30s are increasingly drawn to the Catholic Church as they seek truth, beauty and, yes, girlfriends.” The only problem: It is not true. At least not true generally. Ryan Burge, who tracks religion statistics, says that the Catholic Church is in decline. Further, weekly church attendance among practicing Catholics is in freefall. According to Burge, “There’s absolutely an uptick in new converts in the last few years. [But] even after these increases, the overall numbers are still significantly down from 2000.” To add insult to injury, more Catholics are becoming evangelicals than vice versa. The Washington Post article has seen a few anecdotes and confused them with data. Christina But the article noted that one Catholic diocese in Ohio had grown by 2000 people. That sounds like growth. Warren It does, but Burge noted that a single protestant megachurch in Ohio had grown by 2000 people. And not just one, but two churches. So it's important to put that growth in context. Christina While we're fact checking and myth busting this week, you have another myth to deconstruct. Warren It's what I call the “Overhead Myth.” That's the idea that non-profits should have as little overhead as possible. Christina What's wrong with trying to reduce overhead expenses? Warren Nothing…within reason. An interesting article at Candid (Guidestar) asserts that “every business pays for overhead, like salaries, rent, and technology, but this doesn't solely determine whether they are seen as successful.” The article asks, “So why are nonprofits judged differently?” It goes on to say, “The overhead myth states that organizations that spend less on overhead are more effective. But this thinking puts nonprofits at a disadvantage.” The article has a point. The bigger issue is not reducing overhead to zero, but being accountable, transparent, and efficient. I recommend all donors and ministry leaders read this article, which you can find in today's show notes. Christina Finally, Warren, I know a lot of our listeners have been following the Artemis moon mission. There's a faith angle to this story. Warren My friend Bobby Ross, Jr., has written a great article about Victor Glover, the pilot of the Artemis II ship currently coming home from the moon. Glover is active in Southeast Church of Christ in the Houston suburb of Friendswood, Texas. His elder flew to Florida to witness the liftoff of the Artemis mission. To read a 2021 interview with Glover in which he discusses his faith, and taking communion in space, again, go to day's show notes. Christina Any final notes before we go? Warren I have some travel coming up in the next couple of months, and I would love to see you. I will be in Los Angeles in April. I'll be speaking at the annual convention of the Evangelical Press Association in Nashville in June. I'll also be in Dallas and Knoxville in May. I will be speaking at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs in June, so I'll be doing reader lunches in Denver and Colorado Springs during that trip. Let me know if you would like to join us. My email is wsmith@ministrywatch.com. Christina And since we were talking about the Overhead Myth, it's probably worth mentioning again that you have written about our rating system, and that article might be helpful for those wanting to dig deeper into this issue. Warren That's right. I've written about the pros and cons of rating systems, and explained why – despite the cons – we think rating ministries is important. But how you do it matters. I'll have a link to an article explaining our rating system in today's show notes. Christina The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm Christina Darnell, along with Warren Smith. You've been listening to the MinistryWatch podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.

Welcome back to another episode of School Counseling Simplified. Today I am interviewing Barbara, who after 40 years in the school setting now serves as a counselor mentor. With experience in both elementary and high school counseling, Barbara brings a wealth of wisdom to the conversation. In this episode, she shares her perspective on self love, meaningful connections with students, and the powerful role of classroom lessons in building relationships and preventing behavior concerns. After four decades of the gift of growing in her character building alongside learners of all ages and stages, Barbara Gruener now actively supports educators who are still in school doing the holy work of tenderly holding hearts and shaping the future for good. Her latest focus on self-love steps her way out of her comfort zone, where the real learning begins. Barbara and her husband live in Friendswood, TX, where they raised their three now-adult children. Her most recent blessing is being called Grammy. What do you love about school counseling? One of Barbara's favorite parts of school counseling is what she calls connecting by heart. She describes it as stepping into someone's story and saying, I have you. Tell me more. What is that experience like for you? She believes counselors have the opportunity to be a steady presence for students as they navigate their journeys. Sometimes that role looks like being a lighthouse that helps guide the way, and other times it is like serving as the rudder that gently helps steer the ship. Barbara emphasizes that connection extends beyond students. It also includes parents, teachers, administrators, and the broader school community. How do you manage class lessons at your school? When it comes to classroom lessons, Barbara believes engagement is key to preventing behavioral challenges later on. During her years in the classroom, she loved using puppets to enhance social stories and capture students' attention. She also highlights the importance of truly knowing your students. Understanding who enjoys participating and who may feel anxious about being called on allows counselors to make thoughtful accommodations. If counselors want to equip and empower students, Barbara encourages them to remain gently curious and take the time to get to know each child. Barbara also stresses the importance of pacing during lessons, especially when reading books with students. She believes that pausing to listen and reflect can be incredibly powerful. Sometimes the most meaningful moments in a lesson happen in the quiet spaces where students have the opportunity to process and share. What is a day in the life for you? Today, Barbara continues to support the counseling profession in many ways. She remains active in writing and has published three picture books, one chapter book, and one digital book. She also leads workshops, participates in author visits, writes blog content, and engages in other creative outlets. One of her recent areas of focus has been workshops centered on the Self Love Club, which she describes as a deeply meaningful and eye opening experience. What advice do you have for new counselors? For new counselors, Barbara offers heartfelt advice. She encourages counselors to go slow in order to ultimately go fast, recognizing that many days in the school setting can feel like triage. It is important to know when to close the door at the end of the day, go home, and replenish. She also reminds counselors to lean on teammates, community members, and the people who care about them so they can sustain their work without burning out. We've all seen that scene from "Perfect" where John Travolta is humping his way through a Jamie Lee Curtis aerobics class, but there's another two hours to this 1985 box-office bomb. And we had to watch all of it. Longtime Shat The Movies beer buddy Scott in Friendswood, Texas, was kind enough to commission a film about Gene Lyons' three favorite topics: journalism, fitness and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Not to be left out, Dick Ebert had lots to say about sex with elite athletes. And Ash got into a car accident. What genre is "Perfect?" Do newsrooms run on self-loathing? A 17-year-old, Connor Hilton, is facing severe charges, including one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily harm, following a tragic shooting incident that unfolded in suburban Friendswood on December 23. Ethan Riley, 18, lost his life in the incident, while his 19-year-old friend, Benjamin Bliek, survived but remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Hilton, allegedly said that "he had thought about and wanted to commit a homicide for a long time." According to the police affidavit, Hilton said he had a handgun after he talked his mother into buying him one. He reportedly said that he wanted the gun with the intent of shooting someone or himself.  Before the shooting, the suspect said all three of them were in the main area of the residence when he was showing them the gun. Hilton reportedly said there was no altercation between him and the victims on the day of the shooting. According to the affidavit, Hilton said “he stood up, raised the gun and shot Riley first in the left side of his head.” He said that he then turned to his right and shot the other victim in the left side of his head.  Hilton told investigators that he fully understood what he had done and that he should be held accountable. The senseless act was brought to the attention of the authorities when an unidentified witness, locked in a bathroom, reported hearing two gunshots and immediately called the police. The witness claimed to hear Hilton sobbing and yelling in remorse after the incident. Upon police arrival, Hilton was found outside the house, visibly distraught. He indicated to the officers that he believed two teenagers inside the house were deceased. Riley was discovered on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, while Bliek was also shot in the head, but survived. During the investigation, Hilton admitted to the police that he had convinced his mother to acquire the revolver for him. In subsequent interviews, Hilton confessed to shooting both victims without any apparent disturbance or disagreement. Initially facing two counts of aggravated assault with bodily injury, Hilton's charges were upgraded to murder after Riley's death. He was placed under a $1 million bond at the Galveston County Jail. GPS monitoring has been added to his bond conditions. As the legal proceedings unfold, Hilton's attorney is requesting a bond low enough to allow him to leave jail for mental health treatment. In a surprising twist, Hilton's attorney disputes his ownership of the gun, claiming it belongs to his mother, Johnece Hilton, who purchased it for her own protection and kept it in a locked safe.   Criminal defense attorney, J. L. Carpenter, released the following statement on behalf of the Hilton family: The parents of Connor Hilton cannot express enough their deepest condolences to the victims' families, who have been heavily on the Hiltons' hearts and minds as they try to navigate this devastating situation. The Hilton family wants to thank everyone who has reached out in love and support, including all who sent positive comments about Connor's character and good nature in general. The family asks for continued prayers for everyone affected, especially the victims' families. On Dec. 24, Hilton was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with bodily injury and booked into the Galveston County Jail. His bond was set at $1 million and he posted it by midday. But once one of his victims, Ethan Riley, 18, died in the hospital, District Attorney Jack Roady upgraded the charges to murder. Though Hilton spent Christmas Day with his family, by that evening, police had rearrested him on the more serious murder charge. He remains in jail and it does not appear a new bond has been issued. Other terms are also unclear at this time. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? But once one of his victims, Ethan Riley, 18, died in the hospital, District Attorney Jack Roady upgraded the charges to murder. Though Hilton spent Christmas Day with his family, by that evening, police had rearrested him on the more serious murder charge. He remains in jail and it does not appear a new bond has been issued. Other terms are also unclear at this time. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

In this episode, I chat with Barbara Gruener, a passionate and connected educator embarking on her 40th year in this field and who is blessed to have grown alongside thousands of children and adults of all ages and stages. This nationally-recognized and sought-after speaker and coach holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and two MS degrees from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, but more importantly, she gets to hold and dynamically shape the hearts of the people whom she has the delight to teach, mentor, coach and love. Barbara truly thrives on connecting by heart and unwrapping the present as she works with intention to help school stakeholders and leaders create a climate of acceptance, belonging, compassion and love. She is the author of two Mom's Choice Gold Award-winning books and the proud mom to three amazing adult children. Barbara grew up on her family's dairy farm in Wisconsin, but today she and her husband John call Friendswood, Texas, home. During our conversation, we talked about the role that choice plays in education. Barbara points out that choice is often discussed but done so through the lens of student voice. And while this is important, she acknowledges, it is also limiting. Barbara shared how providing choice communicates trust, a necessary foundation for building strong, healthy relationships. By telling students that we trust their ability to make good choices and that we are available to guide them through inevitable poor choices, we are building relationships. Barbara also suggested that providing choice improves the mental health for our students thereby enhancing our approaches to SEL in our schools. When students feel that they do not have options, their stress levels rise and this leads to a basic physiological response - fight, flight, or freeze. Yes, student choice is important in our classes but it's so much more than amplifying voice.  Ready to hear more? It's Kristin's birthday, so what better way to spend it than finally finishing her non-consecutive series on the Women of Clear Lake who snapped? This week, we are talking about the murder of David Harris. David was a successful dentist in the Clear Lake area of Houston. His marriage with his wife, Clara, had been deteriorating after he confessed to her that he'd been having an affair with his receptionist, Gail Bridges. He promised to break things off with Gail, but said he wanted to take her to dinner to tell her it was over, and Clara agreed. But as this dinner got closer and closer, Clara got more and more agitated. She finally decided to hire a private investigator to spy on this dinner and make sure everything was going according to plan. But when Clara discovered David was actually meeting Gail at the Hilton Hotel, she decided to confront them, and no one expected how that confrontation would end. “Neurodiversity,” says Ruby, is basically a term explaining the unique ways people's brains work. And Ruby knows. In this episode, she's “taking down the mask” to talk about her own unique brain! Although neurodiversity is a much more common topic than in days past, it's still pretty misunderstood. And when you pair it with fertility challenges, well, finding research or even conversations becomes really challenging. But few are as tenacious as these two when it comes to sharing important information. They found a licensed psychologist who works in fertility and who is looking to make fertility clinics more neurodiverse-friendly. In this conversation with Dr. Kristen Chambliss, Ruby, Anne, and Dr. Chambliss tackle many of the misconceptions rooted in our culture when it comes to a diversity of neurotypes.  It's a critical conversation. After all, as Dr. Chambliss says, neurodiversity may be as crucial to the human race as biodiversity. Or, as Anne put it so well: “Variety is not a disability.” Neurodivergence is not the same as intellectual disability or mental illness. And the more we understand, the less we'll have to fear. There are many strengths that come with being neurodivergent, though sadly, most of what we hear about are the struggles. Fertility can be a particular problem for the neurodivergent individual. Fertility treatment can be especially difficult for individuals who find sensory experiences problematic, for example. Recognizing the many challenges humans as a whole struggle with means more folks get the kind of help they need, offered in the way they need it. And that's just plain good.  Dr. Kristen Chambliss is a licensed psychologist specializing in treating individuals coping with infertility, in vitro fertilization, relationship concerns, and anxiety. She currently practices in Friendswood, Texas. Not only is she an infertility specialist but she is also actively working with our professional organization, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine on a proposal to make clinics more neurodiverse friendly.  References:  Website for the Bloom (1998) article from The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1998/09/neurodiversity/305909/ Damian E.M. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

The Christopher Guest mockumentary that started it all, "This Is Spinal Tap," blended brilliant musical parodies and absurd non-sequiturs well ahead of its time in 1984. It was so convincing that a  young Gene Lyons and a drunken Ozzy Osbourne thought Spinal Tap was a real band. In this episode, Shat The Movies commissioner Scott H. in Friendswood, Texas, treats Ash to one of her favorite comedies. Consider it a Christmas gift full of amazing one-liners, cringe harmonies, jaw-dropping cameos and a strange sense of heart.  We all remember "it goes to 11," but so many other gags make "This Is Spinal Tap" worth rewatching in 2022: Stonehenge, exploding drummers, flower people, Australians' nightmares and "Big Bottoms."
