This podcast episode is a special one for me, as I pay tribute to a man who was truly a force bigger than life: Tom Frank. He was an incredible storyteller and an icon, and I think of him often. This particular episode, which we originally recorded back in September 2020, features Tom discussing the culture of organizations and sharing his history as one of the original members of the P.F. Chang's team. It's especially meaningful to me to republish this episode now, five years into my podcasting journey, because it truly stuck out as one of several of those conversations with him that moved my soul. A big part of our discussion (this was part of my previous podcast with Blake Rayhons) with Tom centered on the definition and immense importance of organizational culture. Tom shared how P.F. Chang's, when it started as just a single restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona, didn't just create recipes for food, but also developed a "recipe for the culture". He talks about that a crucial ingredient in building culture, especially in the context of restaurants and ethnic cuisine, is "respect". This led to a memorable anecdote about the special sauce at P.F. Chang's. This story, for me, perfectly illustrated Tom's insightful philosophy. Our conversation flowed into the concept of creating a "better world" within the workplace. Tom described this as a somewhat selfish desire to "come to work every day and feel good about myself". He made a compelling case for leaders to embrace their own personal motivations in shaping culture, as this inherently attracts like-minded individuals who also want to be part of that same positive environment. I absolutely love Frank's message. I hope you'll listen and hear that same genuine message. Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com.

In this week's episode of Unglossy, Tom and Jeffrey sit down with Keenan Scott II, a prolific playwright, poet, actor, director, and producer from Queens, New York. Keenan delves into his artistic journey, beginning with his early passion for visual arts and comic books, and transitioning into poetry and performance as he navigated his formative years in Maryland. His experiences at open mic nights in D.C. were pivotal, shaping his creative expression and laying the groundwork for his future in theater. Keenan also discusses the genesis of his renowned play, "Thoughts of a Colored Man," which started as college monologues aimed at authentically representing Black experiences absent from mainstream theater. The conversation further explores the complexities and challenges of bringing a play to Broadway. Keenan sheds light on the logistical and financial hurdles, including navigating the influential theater families that control Broadway venues. Despite these challenges and the abrupt end to his play's run due to COVID-19, Keenan's work continues to make a significant impact. In this episode of Hawk Talk, South River High School's girls basketball coach Mike Zivik shares the exhilarating story behind their state championship win, outlining a journey from a challenging 2-5 start to ultimate glory at the University of Maryland. The episode delves into the team's development over the season, highlighting the strategic coaching, mental resilience, and unwavering community support that fueled their success. Coach Zivik's tactical use of the team's depth to wear down opponents played a pivotal role, particularly in the championship game, where South River's frequent rotation of players contrasted sharply with their opponent's reliance on a few key starters, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback. The championship's setting added an extraordinary dimension to the victory, as the team walked the same tunnels as Big Ten legends, buoyed by the vibrant support of five busloads of fans from their hometown and the local community cheering from The Turtle in Edgewater. Coach Zivik highlighted the psychological strength of the team, emphasizing their ability to stay positive and composed under pressure, which was crucial to their comeback and ultimate victory. This episode not only celebrates their tactical success but also paints a vivid picture of the emotional and community-driven aspects that contributed to their memorable championship run. This episode also marks an exciting transition for Hawk Talk as host Tom Frank welcomes new co-hosts Grey Frank and Jayden McDuffie, who bring fresh energy and perspective to the show. Their enthusiastic participation in a March Madness draft competition adds a fun, interactive element that basketball fans will appreciate as they debate tournament predictions and strategies.Whether you're a South River Seahawk supporter, a basketball enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates stories of perseverance and triumph, this championship celebration episode delivers authentic insights into what makes a winning team both on and off the court.
