Army Letters: Correspondence of Alexander Smoot 1932-1935 by Geoffrey B. SmootThe world was deep in depression. The clouds of war were forming over the Pacific as the Japanese war machine was preparing for war. A young man from a small town on Maryland's isolated Eastern Shore had just graduated high school and was struggling to find work while trying to figure out if he could go to college. Living briefly with his older brother he soon learned that jobs were scarce and any thoughts of college were just dreams. Alex Smoot enlisted in the Army to take the burden off his family of supporting him while hoping to be able to contribute something to their sustenance from his Army pay. The struggles of this young 19th Infantry soldier are detailed in a treasure of his own words depicting his experiences in preparing the defense of Hawaii while trying to cope with the harshness of the Great Depression. Anecdotal stories abound about a young soldier's travails and treasured moments while stationed so far from home for three years with only letters to link him to his family. This is a story of an American family during one of the harshest of times in our history.Geoffrey Smoot is Alexander Smoot's oldest son. Publishing these letters is related to his desire to preserve his father's legacy but also to offer an opportunity for students of history to have a firsthand prime resource which would enable a better understanding of what individuals and families endured during these challenging times. Geoffrey is a retired history teacher, B.S. Ed. Penn State (1966), and a Master's from Salisbury University (1972). He served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard (1958-62) as an Aerographer's Mate before attending college. He was a longtime baseball coach at Bennett High in Salisbury, MD. Married (Beverly) with two sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren. Currently retired, he is active in his church and also in community concerns.https://www.pageturner.us/bookstore/army-letters-correspondence-of-alexander-smoot-1932-1935http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/91224pt1.mp3

Old Growth Forests, natural forests that have grown undisturbed over a long period of time, offer a wide variety of benefits including storing more carbon and nitrogen than typical forests, providing a unique structure that supports rich ecosystems, and offering an example of what nature looks like when it flourishes on its own. Unfortunately, due in large part to human intervention, these old forests are hard to come by - but our guest today wants to change that. Joan Maloof is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Salisbury University and the Founder of the Old Growth Forest Network, the only national network of protected, old-growth, native forests in the United States. The organization's goal is to locate and designate at least one protected old forest in every U.S. county that has the right climate to sustain a forested area. In this conversation, Monica and Jennifer chat with Joan about her journey to founding the Old Growth Forest network, the intricate and rich ecosystems that these old forests support, and beauty as a catalyst for positive change.Show NotesThe Old Growth Forest NetworkAbout Joan MaloofFind a ForestNominate a ForestVolunteer with the Old Growth Forest NetworkNature's Temples: The Complex World of Old Growth Forests by Joan MaloofAmong the Ancients: Adventures in Eastern Old Growth Forests by Joan MaloofTeaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest by Joan Maloof

Great kingdoms engaged in diplomacy, exemplified by the brilliance of the Amarna system, where clay tablets etched with wisdom and eloquence crisscrossed the region, paving the way for peace, trade, and cultural exchange. Great Kings recognized that "cooperation," not conflict, reigned supreme—a lesson echoing through the corridors of time.       I can teach people how to connect through our differences, develop mutual respect, and alleviate anxiety through diplomacy. Diplomacy demands a careful understanding of the positions and interests of all parties involved, highlighting the possibility of finding common ground even in conflict. It emphasizes maintaining cordial and respectful relationships with foreign leaders, even during times of tension. I firmly believe in the importance of civility and courtesy in international relations, emphasizing the need for patience, persistence, and mutual respect in achieving diplomatic goals, especially in our everyday world.  My experiences include stories of diplomacy with a sheik in Dubai, a Japanese Prime Minister, and the balconies in Italy!   https://americaconnected.org/

About the Guest: Samantha Brillantino is a legal specialist at one of the largest medical technology companies in the world. She has been working in the legal industry since graduating from Salisbury University in 2017 and obtaining her ABA paralegal certificate in 2019. Samantha has faced challenges throughout her career due to her learning disability. Despite the doubts and challenges she has encountered, Samantha has proven that anything is possible with hard work, determination, and self-belief. Episode Summary: In this episode, Ann interviews Samantha, a paralegal who has overcome challenges and defied expectations in her career. Samantha shares her experience of being told by a recruiter that she had no chance of being hired as a paralegal due to her lack of experience. However, Samantha persevered and landed a position at one of the largest medical device companies in the world. She emphasizes the importance of believing in oneself and not letting others define your capabilities. Samantha also discusses her learning disability and how she has learned to navigate the legal industry while managing her disability. She offers advice for paralegals facing similar challenges and emphasizes the importance of communication, continuous learning, and self-awareness. Key Takeaways: Believing in oneself and pushing through challenges is crucial for success in the paralegal career. Recruiters may underestimate the potential of candidates based on their lack of experience, but it's important to prove them wrong and continue pursuing opportunities. Individuals with disabilities should be open and honest about their challenges with their managers and seek support from companies that value inclusivity. Strong communication skills, self-awareness, and continuous learning are essential for overcoming challenges and excelling as a paralegal. Networking, joining professional associations, and attending seminars can provide valuable opportunities for career growth and development.   Are you a paralegal who wants to skip the learning curve and kickstart your career? The Paralegal Boot Camp offers online courses to fast-track your paralegal career and cut YEARS off the typical learning curve that most new paralegals encounter when starting their careers. View our course offerings to see how we've helped thousands of paralegals like you. Robert Taylor Jr. will never forget 12/1/21 and not just because the date reads the same backward and forward. That's the night that Coach Taylor survived a massive cardiac event thanks to "everybody (doing) what they were supposed to do that night perfectly."Rob is a physical trainer who has worked with Olympians and NFL sports teams as well as youth and college athletes. You'd expect him to be tough. But when he woke up that December night to the feeling of a "singular 18-wheeler" hitting him in the chest and running down his right arm, he wasn't sure what was going on. Moments later, a "highway of 18 wheelers" went through his chest and he was thrown to the floor from the pain."I'm 240 pounds. I'm not normally knocked on my rear end," he said.Unsure about whether he was having a heart attack since the pain was in his right arm, not his left, his wife got him into the car to drive to Baltimore's St. Joseph's hospital. They never made it.Through a series of wild events that he describes in this week's episode of Chiseled, Rob shares through laughter and tears the details of that night, how it has affected his life and business, and what he does with the knowledge he gained from the experience. You may want to grab a tissue for this episode. It's an emotional roller coaster in the best kind of way.I've known Rob for about eight years. Our friendship dates back to the days he trained my soccer-playing daughter while she attended Maryvale High School in Baltimore (she also played soccer for four years while studying at Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore). He is a tough but lovable coach and his philosophy and skills have changed the lives of countless athletes. My family is fortunate to have had him come into our lives and we're glad he's still in them.If you'd like to reach Rob, you can download his ebusiness card from callcoachtaylor.com. His information will be entered directly into your phone's contact list. You will also receive great coaching videos and other information about Smarter Team Training. Standing in an old-growth forest, you can instinctively sense the ways it is different from forests shaped by humans. These ancient, undisturbed ecosystems are increasingly rare and largely misunderstood, but American environmentalist Joan Maloof knows these forests intimately and has been studying and writing about them for decades. In the newly revised and expanded edition of her book, Nature's Temples: A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests, she continues to deepen our understanding of these extraordinary ecosystems. Maloof brings together the scientific data we have about old-growth forests, drawing on diverse fields of study to explain the ecological differences among forests of various ages. She describes the life forms and relationships that make old-growth forests unique — from salamanders and micro-snails to plants that communicate through fungi — and reveals why human attempts to manage forests can never replicate nature's sublime handiwork. She also sheds new light on the special role forests play in removing carbon from the atmosphere and shares what we know about the interplay between wildfires and ancient forests. Joan Maloof, Ph.D., is a powerful spokesperson for our nation's forests — sharing information about their extent and condition and encouraging their preservation. Maloof is the author of Nature's Temples: A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests. She also founded the Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization that is creating a network of protected forests across the U.S. Maloof is a professor emeritus at Salisbury University where she taught Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies. She is the author and four books in addition to Nature's Temples: Treepedia; The Living Forest; Among the Ancients; and Teaching the Trees.
